Elk Grove Village, IL
My auntie took m hubby and I here on a recent visit to NY...love this little bagel place...but of course I didn't get a bagel ;). I was drooling over the variety of cream cheeses from tofu to jalapeno to low fat regular! They also make delicious breakfast sandwhiches (according to my hubby). I ordered a chocolate chip muffin (yes that was my breakfast!) and I ate the ENTIRE thing..it was O-SO-YUMMY!
For NY, I'm assuming the prices were reasonable...for 3 bagels (one with ham) and a muffin, the total was about $11....which if you went to Starbucks, you would be spending about the same...for not as good of quality! -

Most bagels should be eaten hot (in my opinion) because they taste so great. These bagels however are delicious even after they get cold.
True & proper east coast bagels. -

LOVE Bergen Bagels!
The bagels are AWESOME here and they have fantastic baked goods!!!! They got a wonderful selection of spreads and sandwich combos. The coffee is good as well.
The main issue is that it is TINY but luckily that is being rectified as they will be moving down the street to a much larger space in the new Pratt building. I wish they would hurry! It would also be amazing if they were open 24/7...at least on the weekends.
They deliver which is yet another plus. I noticed the last time I was there that they start accepting Pratt Dollars which I am sure will drive even more business for them from the college. What an excellent business decision on their part!
It is a little pricey considering it is a bagel place... Other thing is...CASH ONLY. Would be great if they started taking credit cards.
LOVE THIS PLACE! I'm so excited for them to move to the new space....hopefully they will have a lot of seating. -

Bagel and a coffee for under two dollars, under 2 blocks from my place of residence? Yep.
This place is a dangerous threat to my low-carb diet, but the Tofu cream cheese options make me feel better about it. -

Bagel good, lox could use some work. If only Bergen Bagels supplied Russ & Daughters with bagels, then some real magic would be created.
Although I loved the jalapeno cream cheese, I would stick with the scallion cream cheese only because it's not readily available in CA.
Not much seating is available inside Bergen. Maybe a couple two seaters. If not, you can eat outside while standing. Subway station is only steps away. -

One of the awesome things about exploring NYC with locals is that they take you places like Bergen Bagels. Delicious bagel breakfast sandwiches and coffee for 2 for less than $10? I didn't think it was possible in New York - but it is! With a huge array of bagels, more cream cheese variations than the mind can handle, speedy service, and bargain price tags, what's not to like?

I like to keep it scientific. Food-memory is quite flawed, and if you took it to a blind taste test, you probably wouldn't be able to pick out your "favorite" [beer/chip/hummus/whatever] from a line-up. Seriously. Try it.
So my friends and I had a bagel throwdown last weekend: Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe vs. Bergen Bagels (the original location at Bergen & Flatbush). Going into it, we expected Bergen to win.
We ordered the same thing (everything with scallion cream cheese) at both places. We ate the bagels from both places at the same time. And from the moment we opened the packages, the Olde BK Bagel Shoppe took the lead. The bagel was bigger and had much more "everything" coverage. It was golden brown to Bergen's pallor. And the taste & texture were incomparable. Bergen was flat, not nearly enough salt, with a bland, cheap texture. OBBS was chewy as hell, super flavorful--perfectly seasoned--and overall far superior.
No comments were made about the cream cheeses - I think we were all so blown away at the differences in the bagels that they didn't even register.
To all of the reviewers dogging OBBS in favor of Bergen: put the 2 products side-by-side. There is no comparison. OBBS is by far the better bagel. -

Was looking for great bagels to take back to the land of no good, very bad, horrible bagels but instead I got just a bag of average bagel.
I don't care one bit about flavour cream cheese, a good bagel is all about the bagel. the right texture, chew and taste. Don't get me wrong these are better than ANY bagel on the west coast but they are so not as good as a least a dozen places in Manhattan and even a few in Brooklyn.
The bagel with lox was of course far far better than what you get in SF, they actually gave me lots of lox even though it was less than in other place in NYC but still probably three times the amount you get in SF.
Still they are so nice to eat instead the horrible horribly soft, bready San Francisco "bagels". -

I love this place! White fish, red onions, cucumber on a plain toasted bagel. Wishing the southern states would figure this bagel thing out?

I had kind of a funny experience here.
after a quick wait in line, I ordered a 'flagel' (flat bagel) and a black and white cookie from a kid who was clearly new here. After he toasted and coated the flagel in some delicious garlic and jalapeno cream cheese (Mmmmm), he tried to ring me up.
me - "one black and one also please
new kid - "ohyea... totally. lemme grab that
*CRASH*BANG*SPLAT*CRASH*
as he grabbed one of the cookies, he knocked over what was presumably the entire day's worth of black n white cookies on the ground. FAIL. I felt bad for him, but hey, I got the last one, and it was really fresh and tasty. softer than most i've ever had. The flagel was great too, all for under $5. -

I love Bergen bagel. There are a few other good bagel spots in the area, but none as good as this.
Always pretty busy, but the line movies quickly and the service is friendly, and the bagels are some of the best I have ever had. -
Review from Amy A.
I'm a little shocked at the number of 5 and 4-star reviews I saw at first glace.. this place is clean, reliable and decent quality, but not spectacular and one-of-a-kind that I would expect from a 5-star rating. The bagels are slightly better than average and the cream cheese selection is decent. I have come here a few times for lunch and just like most NY deli's, Boars Head rules the show. The chicken and salads at this place seem to be made daily but by 1pm today they were looking a little sad and lonely. Glad I passed on those. I've had bigger and better sandwiches for $6, but I've also had worse, so I don't complain.
Note this place is *cash only*!
Happy mediocre munching. -

BERGEN BAGELS IS THE BOMB. End of story.
What, you won't just take my word for it? Fine... Bergen Bagels is perfectly placed right outside of the subway and a hangover-walk from my house. Their bagels are always fresh, classic New York soft & chewy, and the toppings are evenly distributed around the bagel (unlike Essa Bagel). They have a good range of toppings & accoutrements for any bagel mood. The prices are pretty decent for bagel sandwiches - mine is usually under $5 with a flavored cream cheese & some veggies. Another great thing about Bergen Bagels is that they have tofu cream cheese for that-one-vegan-friend. Minimal seating inside, but who wants to sit inside anyways? There are parks and stoops a-plenty in the vicinity. So basically, everything about Bergen Bagels is the greatest, except that they are cash only, but there's an ATM right next door, so no big deal.
Just please don't go when I'm hung over and get between me & my bagel. -

Wow. I'm in shock.
Just ordered delivery from these guys. About 30 minutes after we placed the order, they called back asking for directions because the delivery person couldn't find our apartment. We gave him very clear, simple directions. (We live on a block that has multiple large apartment buildings. It's not hard to find AT ALL.) About 15 minutes after that, they called back and left a message, saying the delivery person couldn't find the address, so they can't send our food. We've been waiting 45 minutes at this point, and the guy is trying to tell us he's just not sending our food because his delivery person is an utter dolt. So we returned the missed call and again gave very clear, simple directions from the current location of the delivery person, which was one block over and a few blocks down from our apartment. Instead of making an effort to help the delivery person get to our apartment, he simply hung up on us.
My 12 year old little brother has GPS on his phone, and is also capable of reading a map. There's no way these guys are that dumb. Clearly they just don't care. -

Whenever we are in Park Slope, we come here to get our bagel on! Is it the best bagel in New York ... not likely. Is it a damn good bagel ... most definitely. We always have good service. The wait isn't too bad because the staff are fast. The bagel is reliably good. It is definitely the best bagel in the area. We typically get one when we go out on our morning walks when we are in town. We do not live in New York and have often picked up bagels here to take to wherever our current home is when we pass through, including at least once taking a dozen or so back to our home in Ghana. Take cash if you go because that's all they take.

Man, I wish I had one of these in my neighborhood. I had a pumperknickel bagel here, and it was as good as the H&H on the Westside. Soft, chewy, not too big.
The black & white cookies here are great. The icing is distinctly vanilla and chocolate, yet it doesn't melt as you touch it. The cookie part is real soft. This is a class NY B&W. -

Midway through a lazy Saturday morning my Jewish side had a craving for some bagels with cream cheese and chopped liver. I suggested it to my boyfriend in an effort to break up our Cheryl's tradition and curious, he decided to try. I was surprised he'd never had a REAL bagel experience before and I promptly told him "we need to put a little Jew in you" then clicked on my menupages app to choose food. I have had Bergen Bagels before from their Myrtle Ave location and knew main branch would be just as good. I ordered my staple cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and liver on the side while Danny decided to be bold and get one of their sandwich combos.
When I called the first time, I was put on hold for 5 minutes and has to call back to get my order taken after another 2 minute hold. That is the only reason this Bergen doesn't get four stars from me. Hold time. Other than that, the deliver was fast and the food was just as good as I remembered. -
Review from Josh K.
The bagels at Bergen Bagels are good enough but they don't bowl me over. Maybe it's just an artifact of the walk back to the place we were staying at, but I found that they always had this chewy, no-longer-toasted texture to them after opening the wrapper up at home. I ended up toasting one side of the bagel again just to get a bit of a crunch going.
I just know that when I toast a bagel myself, it gets crunchy, and stays that way for a while. I bet it's because of their quick-toast conveyor belt oven.
On the very bright side, they have great, fast service, and a dizzying array of spreads and shmears. I like the fishy ones: I've tried the baked salmon salad spread as well as the jalapeno tuna salad spread (tastes similar to Japanese spicy tuna rice ball filling!) However, watch your wallet, as these are "premium" spreads and will increase the cost of your finished bagel to about $5. -

My girlfriend and I have been ordering here for a year now and these bagels never get old. They are so consistent in taste and quality. The lady that takes delivery orders is super nice and knows who I am from my name and address and I now order "The Usual" and she knows the order by heart. I wish they would jump on the Seamlessweb or GrubHub train but getting to say "The Usual" and having the order completely right is quite cliche in a good way and very gratifying. :)
The Egg Bagels and Iced or Hot Hazelnut Coffee is amazing.
Thank you Bergen Bagels. -

This is such a gem in a wasteland of often mediocre holes in the wall, this one is such a find. No that is not to say that there aren't some great spots along Flatbush and Vanderbuilt, there are just not for bagels/breakfast.
The bagels are always fresh, soft and chewy with a more than adequate number of spreads and cream-cheeses (no there aren't 200 of them but who really needs low fat tofu cream cheese with blueberries and vanilla?) the coffee is standard (bitter and dark as depressed teen poetry) the staff are friendly and efficient and i have never had any issue with skimpiness as some people here have complained... -

YESSSS!!
This place rules. They are so friendly, fast, and accurate. It's the trifecta of great customer service.
I've grown dependent on their egg breakfast sandiwches (with hot sauce, Coffee and OJ, of course) but I also love their muffins and bagels. They have a great selection of spreads and will basically make anything you want.
It's hard to start a great day without this place. -

These are my favorite bagels in the world. They're big, totally soft on the inside and usually a liiiiittle crusty on the outside. Perfect. My fav was always an everything bagel with tofu lox spread (btw, you can't get this most places! a very tasty treat for lactards like myself).
I just moved to New England and you can NOT get good bagels here. I really miss picking up a nice Bergen Bagel on my way to work. The best. -

I don't appreciate how Bergen Bagels sits adjacent to the Bank of America ATM and the Bergen St 2,3 stop.
My attempt at reducing carb intake and frivolous bagel spending fails every time I'm on my way home from yoga class.
It doesn't help that after Bikram classes my stomach is quite often left FAMISHED- while laying in savahsana I often visualize the deliciousness of Bergen Bagels instead of focusing on my breathing, etc.
And damn the BofA ATM next door. You always suck out an additional $20 from my checking account to support my Bergen Bagel addiction (which is probably the only addiction that doesn't support credit cards).
I had a bagel w/butter and a small coffee for brunch this morning (only $2.17!) and I wish I had one for dinner right now....mmmmmm..... bagels.............Listed in: Early Morning Eats

I walked in here at night and they were busting out some Beastie Boys. Sold.
Turns out the bagels, cream cheese and black & white cookies are quite tasty. We grab snacks from Bergens a couple of times a week. -

I must start this review by mentioning two things:
1. I [heart] NY and 2. I [heart] bagels.
Therefore, because this is me reviewing a bagel shop in New York (specifically, Brooklyn), it might be a tad biased...
-- -- --
Simply put: I LOVE THIS PLACE.
One of my favorite Bergen Bagels memories involves me walking 2 miles to get here, in 30 degree weather, with my sister, just to land an awesome toasted egg bagel with scallion cream cheese.
My sister was a bit of a "reg", so an employee or two would recognize her whenever we came here and they were nothing short of delightful.
Another big reason I love this place is because they have any type of cream cheese you could ever possibly want.
AND THEN, they have all those types in a tofu-based variety -- awesome, huh?
If you are in the 'hood, you should definitely make it a point of checking this place out.Listed in: NYC - Best of

i love bagels.
but its not cute..
it just makes me a judgmental snob.
It all started with being on a bike ride and having to pee... fast forward... I am eating a delicious cinnamon raisin bagel which is still fresh at 8PM covered in ample amounts of sun dried tomato cream cheese. my friend Marina had the everything bagel with lox spread, also jam packed with goodness. The man behind the counter was very nice! They are cash only and I was about 50 cents short and i told him to hold my bagel hostage while I ran to the ATM, but he laughed at me and said "take it, you'll get me next time" which put a giant smile on my face and made me fuzzy inside.
Oh and yes, you read correctly, I said cinnamon raisin bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese. I swear something about the sweet with the tart/salty/acidic goes so well together! Soberly. Not pregnant. Just try it once before you point and laugh!!! -

Not the best bagel I've had in the area, but I'll still go back for the cream cheese. There are TONS of different shmears.

Great bagels. I love a toasted sesame and butter, or a pumpernickel with lox spread. Whatever flavor you get it is good. Crunchy on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside.
Right in the neighborhood and a block from my new job.
The coffee however is a little bitter. That is why just four stars.
I have yet to try some of the other flavors of bagels and cream cheese, but a coworker said the pastrami and Swiss was excellent. I do like a good sandwich, so It is on my list to try next. -

Delicious bagels, an amazing selection of cream cheeses, and quick service make this a reliable, satisfying morning stop. If you arrive when you're probably going to arrive, you'll see a long line. Unless you're in a mad rush, don't worry: it'll move quickly.
Behind the counter, a half-dozen or so people weave around each other trying to get the line of customers taken care of. There's one guy I always hope I don't get because he seems a little disoriented, and a woman I always hope I do get because she's awesomely fast and efficient (and has a funny technique for getting bagels down from the high shelf with her bread knife).
I haven't had the muffins, but they look good and fresh. On the other hand, the baked goods on top of the display case aren't made on site, so they're unremarkable. (I love a good croissant, but I don't bother with the ones here any more: the bagels are too good.)Listed in: Close to Home

Not enough good words exist on Yelp for the salad option at Bergen Bagels. For $6.95, they'll customize a salad completely to your liking. They start you with standard romaine or romaine with cabbage, and then you pick all the toppings your little heart desires. They mix them up and pack them all in there for you. Delectable.
You know this is rare. Manhattan salad places tend to gauge you on the toppings. Am I right? Laaade-eeeez? Or anyone?
Bergen' great! -

80 cents/bagel is a steal
$2.89 for toasted onion bagel with scallion cream cheese: overloaded, of course New York style, so had to scrap some off
crisp on outside, chewy on the inside...almost perfect
little hole in the wall, but neat with large selection of bagels, spreads, smoked fish
their chalked menu signage needs to be redone, too much info which is typical -

My only points to add the reviews already here:
1) These bagels are the light, air filled, puffed up so that they're bigger than your head, kind of bagel. Not the hard small, doughier, more traditional UES type.
2) The coffee is bitter but not burned bitter, just hot fresh and bitter.
3) You have to know what you want when you get in line. Otherwise, that thing moves so fast that it'll surprise you and you could make a rookie mistake by hemming and hawing and then the dude at the counter, and everyone in line, and the bitter coffee will join forces to reprimand you for fff'ing things up.
this is also a bad place to say something like, "that Ratner, he's a real go getter". -

I judge bagel places purely on one thing: the quality of their bagels. Bergen bagel has the best bagels I have ever eaten in my life. Hands down. Love them so much.

Review from Franny A.
There was an article some months ago comparing bagels with the works- cream cheese, lox, onions, tomatoes of different bagel joints.
Bergen bagel received the thinnest and cheapest prize. That being said this was my second experience with BB.
This time I was solely here for the works as I am not a great fan of their bagels, a little on the light, on the souless side. Bagel Hole on 7th rocks as PS bagels go. OH- the BROOKLYN BAGEL BITCH is showing...
Anyway- seeing no darkly baked bagels suiting my picky bread tastes, I went for a cinnamon raisin with the works and a decaf. TOTAL: $8.17 what a bargain.
Now this is sacrilage to some- cinnamon raisin with the works, but the sweetness of the bagel combined with the goods- yes it was thin, but awful tasty and worked well. Coffee was surprisingly good. -

Can't say enough about Bergen. My boyfriend and I order delivery from here WAY too much because these soft, chewy, amazing bagels are way too good. I order the plain, egg, or cinnamon raisin with plain cream cheese. All are equally delicious. And their hazelnut coffee is AMAZING!

San Francisco, CA
Their bagels are freak'n amazing but their service just sucks. lol. I still come here on a weekly basis. I don't live around there so I don't have the luxury to eat their bagels everyday.
When you eat their food, it's one of the best deli foods you can get in NY. The texture of their bagels are phenomenal. Crispy on the outside and it has a chewy inside. I'm drooling already just writing about their bagels.
However, you need to be an alert when you order your stuff. They tend to mess up your orders. For instance, if you want to eat their Cranberry-Orange Muffin, you may end up getting
1.) Cranberry Muffin
2.) Blueberry Muffin
Another note, they can also mess up your drinks --this is dangerous in the morning when you're particular with your drink. You may want to throw your drink at them....
I highly recommend any bagel fanatics to check this place out!
