A good place to eat in Queens! The matzo ball soup is good enough - but you can't go wrong with the meatloaf. I've had it both as a sandwich and as a Wednesday special (served with mashed potatoes). There was skepticism when I saw it had rice and tomato sauce visible...but the taste was beyond my wildest dreams. The burgers here are even better. You get a choice of a turkey or steak burger. The way they cook it baffles me. The outside is crispy and tasty while the inside is moist. Needless to say, these burgers beat your typical fast food anyday of the week.
Ben's Best has good eats! Go there right now! -
Review from Tyler L.
This is a kosher deli with a very traditional menu. The waitress was very friendly and it looks like a nice, casual neighborly place inside. However, I am giving this place three stars because I didn't like the entree I ordered.
I usually try to go for entrees that sound interesting that I have not had before. Here, I ordered the "Boiled Chicken In The Pot". Honestly, this was a very bland and boring dish. It was normal chicken boiled with vegetables and matzo balls. There was not much taste to it at all.
On the other hand, my friend enjoyed his very large (and lower priced) sandwich very much. It looks like I chose wrong. -

Love this place! It's my go to Kosher deli.
Huge portions, reasonable prices, great service, and delicious food!

We had been craving this spot ever since being featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. Seemed like it was really worth the schlep out there!
We had the fried kreplach (with the duck sauce) and was enjoyed very much. Comes with 4 and fried onions.Everyone ordered sandwiches and I had the stuffed cabbage. A little pricey for two small cabbages but was filling and came with side of fries. Cabbage was good, a little sweet but definitely an enjoyable dish, although a little difficult to eat. Matzah ball soup was done well.
Overall sandwiches were nothing spectacular as far as signature Jewish delis are concerned. They were actually smaller than I thought they would be but then again not as expensive as the ones you get in the city.
Service was very friendly, space is extremely plain if not a bit run down inside. But then again you are there for the food! They do charge sharing fees which I think is a bit lame especially since the dishes aren't on steroids like at Carnegie deli.
So far, I will shockingly admit the best Jewish deli I have frequented a few times now is 4th St Deli in Philadelphia..... -

Ben's Best is a simple little joint; however, I am not entirely sure if they know it. The food is good, but not fantastic. The chopped liver and pastrami on rye is about the only thing I order here each time. And thankfully I don't have to wait in line for a silly little ticket. They do it well, but are quite over-priced considering the customers are nearly almost always retired pensioners. (I don't think I've ever seen a young person here.)
Ben's Best is not a bad place; this is just a neutral review. The staff are a little eccentric and have a slightly higher opinion of themselves than they ought to. The service is friendly, but you have to be friendly first. They won't let you take a seat if you are just ordering to go--even if the place is nearly empty. (A little un-called-for toughness, I feel.)
I find these sorts of things odd, and disappointing for a neighborhood establishment. If Ben's Best was a franchise like the crumby Pizza Hut down the street, I wouldn't mind their detached "you-are-lucky-to-be-here" aura. But it's not. It is a neighborhood restaurant surrounded by a lot of up and coming eating places. Ben's Best must try to do better or they will be lost in a rapidly-changing neighborhood. -

Paid a 2nd visit and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. (Apparently Guy Fieri did, too, as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives stopped by last spring.)
The hot pastrami sandwich, matzoh ball soup, latke and chicken soup were big hits for a quick, light supper. Platter of pickles and cole slaw (the best!) were a treat for the table.
True kosher deli, unpretentious and neighborly. -

FOREST HILLS, NY
This place is great! I have eaten here twice and both times been very happy.
The first visit I had their hot Pastrami sandwich and soup. It was great. The meals come with pickles and cole slaw.
Today I had their corn beef sandwich. It was also great.
My wife had the meatloaf sandwich. The meatloaf is thin sliced, like a luncheon meat, we expected a thick slab of meatloaf. Maybe we could have gotten it that way if we asked.
The service is fast and friendly.
The prices are a little high , but the quality is good. -

This place is the real deal. As real as deli gets. It has been around for many many decades. The food is excellent. Soups, sandwiches, this is quintessential New York deli, tried and true, vetted over decades, withstood the test of time, worth a trek out on the E train...

Fuck Katz!
Katz is nothing but an overrated place, with their dried out knishes, long lines and douchebag hipster and tourist customers. That tired film "When Harry Met Sally" wasn't all that, and neither is Katz.
Now, if you want get down and dirty for some REAL Jewish food, then go to Ben's Best Kosher Delicatessen.
Each time we're gone here, the waitresses have always been nice. Not that grumpy attitude the counter people give you at Katz.
I've been satisfied with the portions Ben's has. Okay, it's a bit meat-heavy, but if you're on the vegetarian tip, you'll manage.
Most of the customers seem to be local senior citizens. As for the ambiance, it's kinda like that old school Jewish diner feel. I don't need to see photos of ex-presidents on the wall. I need to eat decent food.
Anyway, that pretty much sums it up.
If I haven't said it already...fuck katz! Oh wait...I did, didn't I?Listed in: R For Rego Park

Review from Arthur Z.
Let's jump right into the Katz's Komparisons (Fuck, I'm clever), for that is where the juicy meat of all deli reviews lies.
The price:
This is almost half the price of Katz's. That is amazing right there. For a pastrami sannich that costs about $18-20 at Katz's, you can get it here for $12.
The size:
A hefty sandwich, about the same size as Katz's. Small bread, but lots of meat...though I could still down three of them before feeling truly satiated.
THE TASTE:
Now to the crux of the review. The pastrami was very good. However, I would have liked it warmer. Also, it was a bit too salty without having any depth of flavor. Katz's uses thick cut pastrami, while Ben's uses relatively thin slices, almost as if they're Boars Head slices.
If you're in the neighborhood craving for some Jew in your mouth, either come to my house or come here. No tourists, no ticket-counter weird mumbojumbo confusion, and no bankruptcy. -

I order from them once in a while. To me it seems depending on the day is how their food will be. Some days it basically tests fresher/better than others. Also paying almost $20 for a sandwich can be a lot for people to swallow (pun intended). I enjoy their pastrami sandwiches, not much different than Katz in Manhattan but as stated before I've had days there where it tasted dry and dull. Overall it's an OK place if you're craving a decent sandwich that's not from your local Subway sandwich shop. Their chili is actually quite good, the burgers are a bit lackluster.

One of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had. The place is no frills and the prices are a little steep, but the food is delic. Definitely worth a visit!

FOREST HILLS, NY
Excellent all the way around, best kosher deli in the neighborhood, possibly the city. Kreplach is fantastic, and sandwiches are excellent (I mostly stick to corned beef, pastrami, or some combination thereof). I've heard some of their other dishes are excellent as well. A better value than a place like Katz's, and probably tastier as well.... Worth going out of your way to get to Rego Park.

If this is Ben's Best I can't fathom what his worst must be like. This place is terrible! Is Ben paying people to write all of these great reviews??? Are these accounts real?
Sandwhiches = 1/4th the size of Katz (yes they are a little cheaper), and the pastrami tastes like Oscar Meyers made it. -

I ordered using http://grubhub.com.I ordered the sweet potato fries and the country style chicken pot pie, two things I was craving for a few days.I understand that I'm ordering it for a business but in the special delivery directions I wrote what business and what we were located next to. I still received a phone call from the lost delivery boy and had to leave my busy store to go outside and pick up my food, which by then was cold. The Sweet potato fries were steak fries, which I wasn't expecting and they were soggy. The pot pie was extremely soggy and contained almost no chicken. I ended up just throwing it away, which made me really upset because I happily paid the $7 delivery fee hoping it would be worth it. For the two items and the fee my order came out to about $20 and I threw away half of it.

Who needs D, D, D? I lived on the LES for years and could've told anybody that Katz's wasn't all that. it wasn't all that in the '50's when my grandfather lived in the NYCHA projects across the streets. My dad moved the family to Forest Hills in the '70's. Our go-to deli was Sandy's Surf (where Jewish Brian Epstein manager of the Beatles got his deli fix when they played in town.) We switched to Ben's when Sandy's went out of buisness.
I order from Ben's all the time. Now, I'm not Jewish but I AM a New Yorker. Good deli is our birthright. Ben's delivers all the time. Great pastrami, great corned beef, wacky celebrity sandwiches, great dogs. I love their potato salad and cole slaw. When you get platters, or potato pancakes, or anything, you get serious pickles, serious mustard, and fresh, chewy rye bread. What's not to like?
Every year I celebrate Hanukkah with my friend Trix. This year it's platters of Ben's delicious brisket, pastrami, corned beef with the mandatory latkes. And the rye bread. I will be picking up the jelly donuts elsewhere. You can't find EVERYTHING in one place.
To the person who critiqued their fried chicken. WTF? You don't go to a Kosher deli for THAT!!! You from NYC? -

I ordered the fried chicken. It was overcooked and dry. Fried chicken is not hard to make, but by using way too much chicken and little batter I can see how they managed it. The one star is for the pickles and coleslaw.

Albany, NY
I found myself back in Queens for the first time in a really long time. My father had moved into an assisted living facility and was pretty down on giving up everything he had so he could fit into this one tiny room. There wasn't enough room for us to sit and talk, guaranteeing that we had to go out to spend any time together. Since my wife has a gluten allergy, I planned ahead before we went down.
When Dad asked for KFC, I had to explain that was pretty much all poison for my wife. But I suggested Ben's, followed up with "I'm buyin'".
For the first time in a really long time I saw the old man smile.
Ben's was one of Dad's favorites my entire life. I must admit, it's one of a few things I still cannot get anywhere close to in Albany. There are places in Albany that try, and some have done well enough to scratch an itch without a three hour drive, but there's nothing like Ben's Best. Since he's now living in Rego Park, we were really just a few blocks away and really the obvious choice.
My wife had never been to a real delicatessen. But she remembered hearing me talk about Ben's and she said she saw it on one of the TV shows she watches. She was looking forward to going. With plenty of time to prepare she had pre-selected what she wanted to order from their online menu. I didn't have to look at the menu, I knew I was having a pastrami sandwich the second I named the place. And I predicted with 100% accuracy what my father would order, pastrami and corned-beef.
See, for us, this was an old friend coming to visit again. This was like getting under an old blanket. Dad used to pick up Ben's whenevetr he was in the mood and it was always pastrami for me, and corned beef/pastrami for dad. Just like we remembered, Ben's was still there. The food was perfect and I even got a miracle parking spot right in front of the door.
My wife stared at the sandwiches with awe. She had heard these things were big, and they don't come anywhere close to that in any place she's been. Then they placed her salad in front of her. This bowl was huge! This is bigger than the bowl I use to serve salad for everyone at the table in my home.
I don't know if it's fare to rate a restaurant on childhood memories. However, knowing that the quality has been the same for thirty plus years has to qualify for something. But bringing my father to Ben's let him remember the way things used to be and enjoy them again, even if for only an afternoon. -

"you go anywhere west of Secaucus, and they don't know what a deli is"
I sauntered down to Ben's intent on trying one of the hot open-faced sandwiches. I only eat one meal on Sundays anyway, so might as well make it count!
went for the fresh turkey sandwich, and swapped in sweet potato fries. the turkey was really moist and tender, though of course I slathered a lot of gravy on it because the gravy was freaking delicious! definitely not the canned crap
the sweet potato fries were PERFECT. I like my sweet potato fries done a certain way: crispy on the outside, a little mushy on the inside (not sure why, they just seem better that way), and surprisingly that is how Ben's done them. no seasoning on them - none is necessary anyway!
place was hopping today. a bunch of people came in who had seen this place on Travel Channel. and of course there were also some locals.
the owner, Jay, was walking around and talking to people at each table. I told him that I was happy this place is farther from me than my gym. great guy, really nice. in fact, the quote kicking off this review is from him, as he was talking about his travels!
there are starving people in other nations because of people like me. if gluttony is truly a sin, I will be driving that short bus to hell. thank you, Ben's.Listed in: Be the King of Queens, Forest Hilltopia and Rego…

REGO PARK, NY
This place is just a few blocks from where I live so it was just a matter of time before I gave it a shot, especially with the rave reviews and all. My friend and I shared their famous pastrami sandwich, matzo ball soup and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious. I give an extra shout out for the sweet potato fries - they were exceptional. Crispy and really "meaty" on the potato. The decor leaves a bit to be desired but who really goes here for the ambiance anyways? It's really the food that's all the craze!

After a work related meeting in Queens I took the opportunity to check out this top rated deli after watching Diners, Drive Ins and Dives where Ben the owner showed his love for what he does in the kitchen. I walked in towards the end of lunchtime and was warmly greeted by the staff in the dining room. I started with the kreplach (Jewish fried dumplings) served with caramelized onions and duck sauce. First time I have ever tried it and was happy I took the leap. Crispy dumplings with a meat filing and duck sauce is always tops in my book. It took some personal resolve to not ask for soy sauce. I settled in for the half a pastrami sandwich with a cup of chicken noodle soup. The soup was a clear broth and hit with a pinch of fresh dill, which was a nice touch. It was satisfying and had clean flavors. The pastrami did not disappoint but was a tad too salty for me.
I wanted to try some more offerings sooooooo, I decided to get a couple of things for dinner. I appreciate the fact that they have basically half orders for many of their entrees so I settled for the appetizer stuffed cabbage rolls and though the sauce was a bit on the sweet side for me, the homestyle cooking of the rolls was evident and delicious. I also got a small Hungarian Goulash and LOVED it! Great sauce, tender meat and veggies on top of noodles was a winner dish!
This Manhattan boy will definitely make another trip out there with company to sample more of the menu.
Ben, the owner was there when I was leaving and seemed like a wonderful guy. My waitress was super nice and helpful as well. -

Hands down!
And I mean hands down, the best corned beef sandwiches ever! The meat is cooked to be very tender and juicy. Their sandwiches are huge and probably could be two meals (or one if you're really hungry). NO one compares to Ben's.
It truly is the best! -

Although you cant sample the meats here, it is a traditional jewish deli with amazing pastrami! I also like the turkey w/ russian dressing, it will keep you coming back!

This place does NOT meet all the hypes at all. SO overpriced and not even that good. The staff was nice and the portion was big though, which is why it's getting 2 stars. But I don't think I'll be going back here ever again.

While on vacation to NYC, staying with friend's in Rego Park it was suggested for me to try Ben's Best for great pastrami. Try I did and I was not disappointed! I was elated! It is so good my mouth waters thinking about it. My party also had tongue, oh so good, and the pastrami burger. Everything was great, even the free sides of coleslaw and pickles were great. What rounded out the perfect meal was the atmosphere. From the customers telling us what's good, to our waitress with her recommendations, to the owner chatting it up with us. A good time had by all. Go to Ben's Best!

Review from Krista M.
All this time and I never visited Ben's Best. I've been to Ben's, 3 different ones in fact, but how did I miss Ben's Best??
A very casual old feel environment. The walls are covered with articles, pictures of famous clientele and old pictures of the neighborhood.
The pastrami is heavenly. Sliced super thin, it is also very lean compared to others I've had, but extremely tasty and moist. Really some of the best I've had. Plus the sandwich size is manageable. It's not a ridiculous heap of meat that is impossible to eat. The coleslaw and pickles are good. The potato pancake was crispy and delicious with the side of apple sauce.
The name says it's the best and here you can take their word for it. -

Can't complain. Showed up around 12:30 on a Wednesday afternoon in August and was immediately seated. Mother in law liked the old feel, look of the place, brought her back to the days in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She ordered the chicken soup and the pastrami half sandwich. Wife ordered the Chicken Batter basket, huge portions and juicy inside. I ordered the Matzah ball soup and the pastrami sandwich. Everything was good, and like all other reviews about the pastrami, it's sliced thin, melts in your mouth and the portions are just right. Cole slaw is very light on the mayo or maybe even non-existent but I found it to be tasty. Staff is very friendly and even though it was lunch time, you never felt hurried and the traffic in and out of the counter never became distracting. We averaged $15 per person (without tip). Metered parking is one hour and we found a spot on the same block as Ben's.

Came here with my friend that lives in Rego Park after seeing it on Diners Drive ins and Dives the other night.
I'm accustomed to Katz's deli when I want to get my Pastrami fix. I found this place measured up well.
The matzoh ball soup was better, the pastrami was up for grabs depending on your mood or preference. Ben's pastrami is leaner and sliced much thinner.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Ben's -

The super-fresh potato salad is DELICIOUS! Something about the perfect combination of spices, salt, vegetable bits makes it irresistible. I also liked the $10 (yikes) pastrami sandwich, served with 3 different types of pickles and mustard, but for the price, didn't love it. As take out, it was a satisfying, filling meal. There's dining room in the back, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy eating there unless it was for a quick bite; it's kinda dark and dingy, albeit with a lot of character.

If you love pastrami, then this is your Mecca (more like, Temple). My Uncle who seems to know of every restaurant in all of NYC raved about this place and would take me here for lunch when I moved to NYC. It truly is the best!
They pile so much pastrami on the sandwiches and you savor every last bite. The best pastrami sandwich in all of NYC, and probably anywhere for that matter.
I never tried anything else here, so my review is based just on the numerous pastrami sandwiches I have enjoyed here. -

Ben's Best is by far the best Jewish Deli in NYC. I have been coming to the deli for years and have never been disappointed with any of my orders.
Last Night I completed the Ben's Best Eating Challenge. The meal was delicious and I barely could fit into my winter coat afterwards.
I highly recommend making your way down to Queens Blvd by car or the M or the R train to have the best Jewish deli in the whole city. -

Dont tell anyone I told you this, but i found out about this place watching *gulp* Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
I get a little giddy with excitment with Guy Fieri visits places that I know for sure actually exist, or places that I can actually physically visit. I made a mential note to visit and when my parents came to visit me in queens they asked me where we should go for lunch (like, im some kind of yelper or something smh) Mom said she was in the mood for a pastrami sandwich and suggested Katz.
I have never been to Katz (pause for reaction) but suggested Ben's Best- because i trusted Guy Fieri- and the menu was waaaaay cheaper than Katz.
When we arrived, we almost missed this adorable delicatessen among dollar stores and bargain stores.
The establishment was full but we got there just in time as a table opened up. After we were seated a few people came in and had to wait (points and laughs)
The owner (whom i recognized from the episode) came to our table and placed a platter of coleslaw and pickles. Becuase my family and I eat whatever is put in front of us, we all ate the cole slaw and pickles... and we arent coleslaw eating people. Before we knew it, our plate was clean and the owner came over with another platter. He said "You look like you enjoyed that...or you're just eating it because its in front of you. Either way, id like for you to have more"
The parents ordered brisket on rye. I ordered hot pastrami on rye. The sandwiches came out quickly along with a side order of fries and complimentary Knish.
Everything was fresh and delicious. We ate to our hearts content... and eyeballed the fella next to us eating the most beautiful Matzoh ball soup i have ever seen. (noted for next time)
Saddens me to discover this gem as I am on my way out of Queens... but its not that far away from my new home... and definitely more appealing price wise than Katz.
I def recomendListed in: Eat Like a Queen!, ...And Sandwiches too!, BIG Plates!

Food: OMG! This place is AMAZING! I usually get stuffed derma (stuffing, chicken fat, carrots, onions, and seasoning encased in beef intestine) and a tongue sandwich. The tongue is PHENOMENAL! I haven't been to any other delicatessen that can match Ben's tongue. You can order the different meats either by the platter, in a sandwich, or by the pound (usually "to go" only). Everything is served on rye bread, unless specified otherwise, with homemade coleslaw and two types of pickles (one less pickled than the other).
Service: A bit slow, but that's only because they only have one waitress for the entire store. The ambiance is decent (very plain).
Price: I think the sandwiches range anywhere from $10-14 (tongue is usually the most expensive cut of meat). -

Just ordered take out. I have to say I am very disappointed.
Pastrami Sand-average, on the smaller side for a kosher deli sandwich, meat was decent.
Cole slaw-good and tasty as were the pickles.
Potato pancakes-TERRIBLE, no flavor and very dense/chewy.
Noodle pudding-just ok, sweet but had pinapples in it which I thought was odd.
Matzah ball soup-ok and mostly filled with noodles and only 1 matzah ball...if I wanted chicken noodle soup I would have ordered that.
Overall very disappointed, I was hoping to find a good kosher jewish deli in my hood, I guess I will have to continue to go into the city to Pastrami Queen. -
