This is hands down the best Thai place in the SF! The place is small...the staff is friendly...the food is outstanding!
We found this place initially via http://Restaurants.com a few years ago...we have been hooked ever since.
All the food is delicious!
Wednesday, 10:15PM.
The folks here were nice enough to accommodate the five of us so late in the eve. They close at 10:30PM, so props to them for being so nice.
+Nice decor, ritzy and bourgie feel without the pretention
+Friendly staff, awesome service (responsive to refills)
+Quick turnaround without decrease in food quality
Stuffed my face in:
1. Spring rolls, vegan
+Fresh, fresh minty bites of tofu and noodles
2. Benjarong Veggie Delight
+Firm string beans/asparagus/carrots and savory tofu
+Broth was delish - how'd they do this without pouring grease!?
3. Brown rice
+Generous scoop
Final Call:
With so many Thai places in the area, Benjarong distinguishes itself by providing friendly n' good service, having appealing decor, and serving yumm-li-cious food.
Went here with the family over the Christmas holiday.
The quality of food was very good and the selections of Thai curries was great. I had the Thai Hot basil pork with jasmine rice: it was text book. Oh the rice: you get a choice of jasmine, sticky or brown which adds another dimension to your dining experience.
On a chilly Monday night we were the only ones in the place at 7 pm. however pick up orders were flying out the front door while we were there, servicing the locals.
These folks make a lovely Green Curry. And believe me: I know Green Curry. When you've been around as long as I have, you've eaten a few. ...so you can judge. And THIS place has one of the best Green Curries I have ever eaten: Spicy, yet incredibly tasty. Great variety of vegetables in it. I love the bits of pumpkin in there. A real pleasant surprise. So far, everything I've had from Benjarong has been excellent. It has already become my go-to place for Thai takeout. I look forward to trying more items from their menu. Maybe tonight...
We ordered through Grub Hub, so I can't comment on the restuarant itself, only the food. The quality of the meat and vegetables in the Red Curry with Chicken and Panang Curry was very good, and the curry itself was quite tasty. I loved the Tom Kha, but my wife felt that it had too much coconut milk in it that made it too sweet. It was definitely on the sweet side. We were disappointed that the jasmine rice we ordered didn't arrive and we felt it was odd that the curry dishes didn't come with rice, which brings down our review by a star. That said we will order from here again, making sure we get the right rice next time.
we love this place, order from them twice a week. The bbq chicken is delicious! we love the fresh spring rolls, and the yellow curry too.
fast and friendly delivery service and not overpriced. love love benjarong!
Today a coworker and I decided to order delivery. We were in the mood for some Asian food. And I immediately thought of Benjarong on Lombard. Since they are literally just down the block I had anticipated the really good meal that I have had several times at the restaurant.
Unfortunately, that was not the case today. It took over 40 minutes for food to be delivered and we both thought that $40 for three items was a bit high for lunch. Portions were small.
Tasty and flavorful, yes. But my coworker thought that the spicy beef with fresh basil should have been better. As he told me he has had much better at other Thai places at a cost much less.
Rice included was a very small amount and I did not like the plastic containers. I think plastic containers for the delivery of hot food is not a good idea. The containers were difficult to open.
The delivery clerk did not give us a receipt. The high price and the fact that it took over 40 minutes to delivery a simple noodle and rice dish did not make a good impression for my coworker. That is too bad because as I said I have eaten at Benjarong several times and enjoyed each dinning experience.
With this delivery order I was disappointed as was my coworker. I guess Benjarong was not having a good day today or, it might be they are just not at their best for delivery.

This is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants! I almost always take out for delivery and not because there is something wrong with the ambiance or the service. The food is always excellent, it is very consistent quality and the ingredients are always top notch for the price. I have not yet came across a mediocre dish. May favorite appetizer is "Thai samosa".
The duck red curry is great, spicy thai basil and many more.
Showed up here on a Monday night, the place was deserted... as in 0 patrons. Five of us walked in and were seated by a very nice man who was obviously related to the family who owns the place. Noticed right away that a small collection of prepared to-go orders were waiting on the bar for either pick-up or delivery. The smell of fresh basil frying was in the air... the very cold air. So cold, our host was bundled up in a heavy pea coat and scarf. Not that surprising since it was snowing on Russian Hill the night before (not enough to stick, but snowing none the less).
The small space that Benjarong occupies is a long and narrow void filled with all kinds of Thai (and Chinese) art knick-knacks and artwork.. The room is dimly lit away from the riser bar area. We had some issues reading the menus, but that was easily overcome.
We ordered up a chicken laarb to start. It was nicely done, but this type of dish is supposed to be served cold - it came out really warm probably due to the chicken not being readily prepared to serve, so they cooked more. Not too appetizing when you are expecting a cool protein laden salad.
As mains, we decided to have the red and green curry each prepared with chicken. Our sides were brown and white pearl rice. Also, we ordered Thai Hot Basil with pork and the classic Phad Thai noodle dish.
All of the mains were very well prepared and it was nice to have three options for rice (pearl, sticky and brown). Unlike many other Thai restaurants, their curries are definitely distinct between them.
The green curry had a real smoothness to it that crept up on you on the finish providing a feeling of "I want more of that silky heat" as the next bite was anticipated. The red curry was a bit bolder up front, but somehow they were able to provide the exact opposite effect as the green - it stood up in your face and stayed there. That's a good character facet that's sometimes either overlooked or over presented by most Thai cooks.
The Thai Hot Basil Pork was a simple preparation that packed a lot of flavor. Unlike most other Thai restaurants, this version was much less oily and salty than usual. I later found out that they use no MSG in any of their dishes - good to know.
Now here's the reason for a middle of the road rating - the place was like a meat packing house. The heater must have either been broken or not turned on at all. This left for an uncomfortable experience overall - well that and the $2-$3 each higher prices for the same dishes at other Thai restaurants in the area... and $4-$6 more than the Thai restaurants in the LA area.
The carved and dyed daikon radish decroumontes we a nice touch on the appetizer plates, but quickly became annoying when they came on EVERY dish. Show your diversity, mix it up with other plate decorations... please.
When you're tired of paying for the fancy and over priced Thai places (aka Osha) and don't mind a mom and pop shop, which is equally as good in taste, this place is GREAT! It's a very cute and charming little restaurant and the staff is very attentive and nice. Everything was well priced. Between two persons of 5'1 and 6'1(weighing in about 275 lbs), we had:
*Calamari (It's a thing to MUST order at every restaurant - looking for the best calamari ever!): The texture of the batter was a bit crunchier than what we were use to. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't OMG either. It was accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce, i prefer an aioli or creamy sauce with my calamari.
*Duck Red Curry: This is one of the best curries I've had. It was very rich and velvety, probably from the duck (I agree with Brooke C - could have used a bit more duck meat instead of skin). Other than that, it was tasty.
*Scallops & Asparagus: I love both scallops and asparagus, so having the two together made me SUPER HAPPY! It was a really good dish, it was a tad saucy but eating it with the rice helped balance that out. If you're not a big onion fan, they do use a lot of it in this dish.
Happy to say we were very satisfied with the meal and did not leave hungry or super bloated. It's a nice 5 minute walk from where we were and i liked walking home to help digest the meal :)
Pros:
- Decently Priced ($40 / two)
- Yummy food, would recommend to someone if they are near by
- Proportions are perfect
Cons:
- Small space
- Probably not good for a large party
- Side rice portions are a bit on the small end though (not enough for a 6'1 rice eating guy)
Recommendations:
- Don't bother with parking, it's hard especially in the Marina. Go for a nice walk, it's good for ya! :)
Probably the best Thai food in the Marina at the best prices around. Mom and pop style shop with no waiting for a table ever. It's not trendy but that's okay. That way it will stay my little secret.
I was looking for a change from Osha on Union. Well I suppose I found one.
To begin with, Benjarong can't really be compared with Osha. Benjarong is small, a more mom and pop place and there's only one waitress. They also have a "honeymoon" table... which I have never in my life seen before. Cute... but probably not practical.
There were also minute differences in the things I usually order. Benjarong's Pad Thai comes with huge shrimp complete with big tails and they sell coconut ice cream by itself (which they nicely packed in tin foil). Which would have been fabulous, had they not smothered it in chocolate sauce. It was really more of a sundae truthfully.
Taste wise they also can not compare. Benjarong's Pad Thai has a very strange smell/ taste to it. I'd call it ketchupy. Since I usually cannot stop myself from eating the whole Pad Thai plate within an hour, the fact I set it aside and wasn't interested totally makes up my mind for me.
Cute place, but the food just isn't up to snuff. Sorry Ben.
I was really craving curry last night and had a huge paper due so I decided to yelp a restaurant that delivered curry! I called in the first time, and no one answered, but they were the only restaurant open on Sundays before 5:00. So I called again. The lady answered and took my order. I thought I could just order curry and it would come with rice, because isnt that how you eat it? I'm glad I asked because I had to order rice to go with it... but whatever. No big deal. I ordered a small rice, because I was the only one eating it, and I didnt need to have tons of rice. After I was done ordering she told me I had to have a $15 dollar order. So i ordered the fried wantons.
When the food got to my house I noticed that the order of curry was HUGE and the rice was in a small little box... What was I going to DO with all that curry and barely any rice?
I loved the yellow curry, in fact, I am craving it now. The wantons were alright. I was mad about the rice.
But I would order from them again.
Benjarong used to be my favorite go-to Thai restaurant. Over the last two years, the quality of food and service has been on a gradual decline. I keep giving this place chance after chance to redeem itself, but sadly Benjarong has disappointed me every time. Tonight's disappointment: delivery time. They estimated 45 minutes, and my food arrived after 1 hour! I'm done with Benjarong.
Ok, so my last review of this place was not so great. But I think they've improved when it comes to delivery, as we ordered from Benjarong tonight and it was at our door in twenty minutes (when they quoted forty). Granted it was kind of early on a Monday night so I'm sure the place was pretty empty, but still...that's pretty awesome service! So anyway, I thought my previous review required an update.
Also, I've eaten at the restaurant a couple of times, and while there was a bit of a language barrier with the waitress, service was very friendly and accommodating.
Some of my usual choices: pumpkin curry (so good!), panang curry, pad see ew, green papaya salad, and stir-fried veggies.
I am so deliciously full right now, and I love it! And even more, I love that I did not have to wait 2 hours for my food to arrive! Yay! :-D

I'm giving this place a 4.5 instead of a 5. First, let me say 90% of the entire meal was AMAZING! For atmosphere, presentation, price, taste, service, everything would get a 5.
I ordered the fresh roll for an appetizer and it was one of the best I've ever had - definitely enough for 2 people to split.
My boyfriend had the samosas which were also great.
For an entree, I ordered the duck curry - the flavor was amazing, but my biggest problem with this meal is that the "duck" portion of it was mostly fat and skin and hardly any meat. I have had this dish at many other thai restaurants around the country and benjarong's taste and presentation was the best, but the fattiness of the duck brought my rating down to a 4 - which made me sad because I really wanted to give them a 5!
My boyfriend had the beef panang curry and his dish was wonderful...some of the best panang curry I've had!
Also, they let you byob which was very nice since we were celebrating and did not like their champagne selection.
I was shocked to see this place so empty on a Saturday night and thought about keeping my review from yelp so it would remain an uncrowded secret. But I had to share the wealth so here is my advice - go check it out!
I won't be ordering from Benjarong again. I placed an order at 5:30, didn't get my food delivered until 7:30 and only live 2 miles from the restaurant. It was cold when it arrived, and the portions were very skimpy. I called the restaurant about an hour after I ordered just to be told the driver wasn't in and should be there in five minutes. Another hour later, the food arrived and the delivery guy had the stones to haggle me on the tip - he said the reason it took so long is because he had to drive so far...pardon me while I break out my tiny violin and play a sad, sad song.
The green curry is amaaaazing. Huge chunks of eggplant, spiced to perfection. Most of their dishes are slightly cheaper than the competing Thai places in the area, and significantly better.
Take out is quick and consistently solid. The inside is cute but not too crowded, seats around 20-25.
Reeeaaally good thai curry!!
I usually come here for lunch to-go on days that I feel like splurging a bit and they have an amazing lunch combination. Appetizer + soup of the day + meal = $8.95 if you order chicken, pork or beef! Amazing!! I usually get the Benjarong Fresh Rolls for the appetizer b/c the peanut sauce is delicious and it feels more healthy but they have spring rolls and samosas on the menu as well.
The curries, I've tried yellow and green, are so delicious and they give you a pretty generous helping as well. Usually I'll only eat like half of the liquid, take it home, add some water and corn starch, throw in some potatoes and shrimp and I've tripled my meal!! Don't laugh... you know that in these times of recession it's a genius way to push a meal!
Wouldn't recommend the cashew dish - not enough cashews!!
I recently ordered take out from Benjarong when a curry craving set in. The Red Curry was packaged in a 1 quart plastic Tupperware container with far more broth than substance. This was fine because I love having soupy curry to pour on top of rice.
The price was reasonable and my craving was satisfied. My only regret was not eating there. Benjarong was really charmingly decorated in authentic Thai fashion.
I was in and out pretty quickly, but was still impressed by the staff.
Looking forward to coming back soon!
I just created my account just to review this restaurant! I'm eating their Tom Yum soup with shrimp right now...LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! If only their service is quicker, I'd give them a 5-star rating. On the other hand, their food is so good but their service moves at turtle speed that I between the service and food...they only deserve a 3. 1 star for service and 5 for food.
On the BRIGHT side, if you're in no hurry, you GOTTA stop by the place and try their food. You'll love it! I LOVE food, but am a very picky eater. On top of that, I'm very lazy about writing....especially reviews for anyone or anything that doesn't benefit me, yet their Tom Yum soup is so delish that I was completely inspired to set up a yelp account just to review them. So if you have all the time in the world to enjoy food, this place is a must try!
Bon Appetit!
Oh yea, their price is fair as well!
This place is really a gem! After trying most of the Thai restaurants in my tri-hood: Marina, Cow Hollow and Russian Hill, we haven't been amazed by anyone in particular. It seems that a lot of our restaurants rotate spots on our fave list. However, when we found Benjarong, we felt that it was our new secret fave Thai spot. We stopped by the other night and walked over enjoying the warm weather. The panang curry was aaaamazingingly delicious. It was so tasty that we just wanted to eat the sauce by itself. I also had the banana blossom salad which was also very tasty and the flavoring was very good. Finally we had string beans with tofu and it was also tasty. The food isn't greasy and they decorate all plates with cute colorful carrots shaped into flowers. Nice touch.

Yum yum! Today we were walking by on our way to Union Street and saw Benjarong, yelped it, saw that… Read more »
I have run by this restaurant several times and finally had the chance to check it out tonight. The food was pretty typical for a Thai restaurant, but the atmosphere and food presentation were fantastic - especially considering Thai restaurants usually aren't award-winning in the decor department. We had the fried tofu and Benjarong spring roll with tofu to start - both were excellent and the portions were large enough that we were able to split them among three people. I had the Thai fried rice with tofu for my entree, which was good, but nothing special. However, all the food is presented really well, with nice, colored garnishes.
The one HUGE drawback was the service. We were one of only two parties in the establishment and were not attended to very well. It took forever to get refills on our wine/beer and each of our three entrees were served five to 10 minutes apart - it was really strange.
All-in-all, I definitely recommend it as a dinner place, but not for a quick lunch.
Service: They were attentive, friendly, and refilled our water glasses frequently.
Setting: It was clean, the bathroom was clean, the artwork is nice, and the lighting was dark (maybe a bit too dark, but still okay).
Food: My BBQ beef was really salty, but my friends' pumkin curry, egg noodle crepe, and eggplant dishes were good. It's hotter than average spicy, but I didn't mind. One weird thing is that they took away one of my friend's plates even though we all planned to eat family style. The food was okay, but nothing special.
Speed: SLOW. There were only 3 tables eating and we didn't get our food out until at least 45 minutes after we sat down.
Price: A bit pricey for Thai and for the quality of food. ~$15 a person for King of Thai quality food.
With so many Thai options on Lombard: Gatip, Yukol, Benjarong, Tom Yum, this place doesn't do too much to make itself more distinctive. I'd say it's a decent choice if you find yourself on that end of Lombard Street and you want Thai, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.
Date & Time: Thursday July 31, 2008 @ a little past 7:00pm

My BF and I LOVE this place! It was so shocking to finally find good Thai food anywhere in our area… Read more »
Sensual seduction (no I am not quoting Snoop! =) )is what this place offers with its cute, dim interior, and delicious food. Located conveniently right on Lombard in the Marina, this place creates some amazing Thai, along with Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean, and Vietnamese appetizers, entrees and desserts.
We started with an appetizer of spring rolls, which were fried to perfection and had yummy mushroom, cabbage, and carrots stuffed inside. We also had a spicy, tingling papaya salad, and some parantha (fried Indian dough). The only suggestion we had was to serve the parantha with some sauce (maybe curry sauce as they often serve their parantha/roti kanai with at the Straits chain). I ordered pumpkin curry with tofu, which was *awesome*! I've never had pumpkin curry, and they managed to bring out all of its amazing flavors with a coconut base. My friends ordered the Asian eggplant and spicy green curry. All were great tasting dishes!
Would definitely visit this fine establishment again! Word of caution wrt the bathroom sink - there is a trick to put off the water; one must move the handles appropriately in order to reach the fine balance of "turn off" - regardless, this restaurant is a great treat for one's palate.
4 tables, 2 waitresses. Do the math.
But the service was so slow I was reduced to eating the
parsley garnish of my dinnermate (no, that's not
a euphemism). Ended up calling off my entree,
which was a salad. Ah, the complexities of making salad.
Paying the bill felt like tossing their salad.
The two stars are for the food.
In general, it irks me when a single bad experience causes
a reviewer to slam a place, but tonight was so ludicrous (I actually
had to get up from my chair to flag down the waitress on multiple occasions -- maybe they should provide semaphores when you walk in) that I'm going to break my own rule.
Yah thats right, I gave them 5.
Because you know what, nothings perfect but this place comes pretty damn close.
Yah yah yah....some things on the menu aren't AMAZZZING but for the most part, Benjarong is always a hit and furthermore, not a rip off!
6 Dollar cocktails in the marina! A miracle! I wish I could give SIX stars for that! The pumpkin curry is so savory and wonderful. Nice atmosphere. Attentive service. And GREAT delivery!
Screw Osha and their silly menu and crazy prices!
Im telling you....this place is BETTER!
More of my SF fantasy breaker restaurant. 1 star for service, 1 star for the ambiance, 3 star less for bad food, bad food, and bad overpriced food.
It sucks when you order to go, you can't send the food back. You have already tipped them, and really there is nothing you can do to justify the bad $40 to go order dinner gone bad.
Absolutely the worst Tom Kha Kai (hopefully I spelled it right), the coconut milk chicken soup, I've ever had in my entire life. Fried rice mediocre at the best. I forgot what else I got... oh yea the silver noodle salad. Again, the worst I've had.
Yes the soup is "with" coconut milk, but the soup shouldn't be that sweet. It was one of my first times to blow soup out of my mouth like how they do in cartoon. It was that fuckin bad.
I feel bad because the place is so cute and nice, and the service very classy. Has nobody told them that their food sucks?
I LOVE Thai food, and Benjarong confirmed that declaration once again. We even toured the menu extensively (ordering 3 different entrees, an appetizer, and the mango sticky rice dessert - yum) and none of us were let down. My one gripe is that rice comes at an extra charge - granted, it's only $1 more which is no biggie, but it's just nice when you don't have to feel like you're either a pig or racking up your bill ordering "extra" stuff to have a little brown rice with your meal.
Decor is very modern and cool which is a nice change from most other Thai places I've been to of late.
Great prices and the friendliest service I've experienced in a long while. Our waitress was incredibly nice, apologizing every time she had to reach over to fill our waters (unecessary but still a sweet gesture). I agree with Rachel W. in that their spice scale is slightly tame (my boyfriend ordered a 9 out of 10 and I even thought it wasn't quite firey enough), but really, no complaints about this place. So glad I found great Thai down the street!
Surprisingly good!
We were just walking around looking for a breakfast or lunch place (ANYTHING that was open on New Years Day basically) and this is a hop-skip-and a jump from the apartment. Done.
They have a good lunch combo thing with soup, app, and a curry. You can pick your meat/tofu/veggie and there were 5-6 types of curry. Really a good deal!!!!
The service was a tad slow but there was just one girl serving the 4-5 tables. The cook just seemed really slow in the back, but I guess we weren't in any rush. Just don't go there if you're in a time crunch I'd say. Good overall experience though!!!
My fave Thai delivery place! All the curries are great, as are the tofu satay, the green papaya salad and the mango dessert!! Have yet to eat in the restaurant, but the food quality is stellar even in delivery, which says a lot. Just don't order too many times so they up the charges, ok? :)
Pleasantly surprised!
Nice little mom and pop Thai joint in the Marina. It was actually the third choice after the first two restaurants were we wanted to go to were closed, but I am glad I tried it. The food portions were nice and big and very tasty. I had the garlic noodles with pork and chicken basil with veggies and it was great. The chicken dish was a little spicy, but that's what you get at a Thai joint. Also tried the Spring Rolls and was satisfied.
The staff was super friendly and kept refilling our water. We must have drank a gallon. Over all I enjoyed my unexpected visit to Bejarong and look forward to coming back.
For the people that said it was wheelchair accessible, they must have forgotten that up have to walk up a couple steps to get to the bathroom. So no, it is not wheelchair accessible.
I love the take out/delivery box. It's the nice flat rectangle shape box. Its much more elegant than shoving it in a chinese take out box.
I also love roti with curry and Benjarong has it.
It has a more upscale looking interior than most Thai joints. But the prices aren't unreasonable; dishes are still under $10, with the exception of seafood. For a better deal, stop in for lunch, where you can get appetizers, a tiny salad, and an entree for the same price--a good and filling meal. One waitperson juggled serving all the tables well. And the food came out fairly quick.
Don't expect any cheapie mints as a thank you with your bill. At Benjarong, they give out Tootsie Roll Pops--that's some serious bonus points.
This might just be my favorite place for Thai food in the city. My roomie and I love to order in from this place. The owner will deliver the food right to your door in a timely manner. The food is delish, some of my fave's are the pad thai, roti bread, and all the curries.
It's easy to get a table. I almost didn't want to yelp about this place just to keep it a secret.
So far, this has been the best Thai food I have had in the Bay Area. While that isn't saying much, I do enjoy their rich red and panang curries and the Asian Eggplant dish with salmon. Sadly, the quality of the restaurant has decreased each time it has been taken over by new management (three times in the past 2.5 years).
I love a delicious tom kha soup, and on this end Benjarong does not come through. Key ingredients are missing, it is bland, the portion size has only gotten smaller and it isn't even suitable for one person except as an appetizer, yet it costs $8 or $9.
I had a bad experience when I disovered a roach in my food the last time I dined here, as well. I realize this happens occasionally, especially when you eat somewhere often. However, I cannot say that it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth.
What happened Benjarong? I love your food, it is always fantastic, but how can you justify doubling some of your prices?
My wife called up last night, delivery menu in hand, and our usual order of about 40 bucks, had increased to 64 dollars. Huh? How did that happen? Well, basically on certain items, like the awesome Seafood Soup, it has undergone a price increase from 3.95 to over 7 dollars. Now call me naive, but how can any business justify doubling its prices overnight? I know it is only 20 bucks, but when your usual bill goes up by so much, I find it hard to justify on principle.
i am gutted about this, I really am. I love the food, but out of principle, I am going to have to go elsewhere. Damn it!
Ordered takeout here the other night. I liked how it arrived in a timely manner and how the food was wonderfully presented in their takeout boxes. I expected the food to just be glopped into their respective containers, because after all, it's only takeout. But I love the attention to detail that Benjarong has. As good as the food looked, it tasted good as well.
This place has my approval. I've actually reheated and am eating leftovers as I'm typing this.
