Unfortunately one of our friends is leaving the country this week, so one of my other friends decided that we should go out for dinner for this occasion. Our parting friend is actually Japanese and I have no idea why they wanted to take her here. Wasn't she just gonna go back home for more of this silly Japanese fanfare?
I wasn't so keen for their teppanyaki cooked food, come on, Japanese people cooking steak? Anyways, I ordered the Splash' N Meadow. Yeah, my steak, which ended up being chopped into little bite sizes pieces for grannies, was very boring. The grilled shrimp was actually quite tasty. The grilled up veggies were also quite tasty when dipped into the sauces. Later, unsatisfied, I ordered some some sushi rolls and I think that hit the spot.
This place had got some decent food, but I think it's more about entertainment value, as Felipe our cook did a number on all of us at the table.

Benihana. Or as I like to call it, Medieval Times for minorities.
It's dinner and a show, but subtlety so. If you don't like a dining EXPERIENCE (i.e. fondue-haters), you won't like it. The first time I went here, I was overjoyed with our chef's antics of flipping shrimp tails into his hat and creating an onion "volcano." Five years later, the show hasn't changed. Not too disappointing, but kind of sad.
I'm not sure if they have a kids menu. If they do, our party of 4 lil' boys didn't take advantage of it. At $20-25 bucks a pop, this place is safely overpriced, but worth the first trip.
You can't really complain about the food, as it is made right in front of you. The shrimp is darn tasty, and as a rule, you HAVE to get the fried rice just to watch chef cook it. Steamed may get you kicked out.
I had a tempura shrimp crunch roll this time around, and it was on par with average sushi places. The Mango Mojitos are great, and this coming from a girl who can't stand mojitos!
Best with a large group of people (no brainer). Even better with 2 elementary school boys who know how to use chopsticks (not the cheater chopsticks!) and can eat their weight in rice.
Our waiter was great, but had to take my water glass to a remote location to refill it. That always freaks me out.

Alas, the sushi choices in Irving are more and more limited. One is dirty and overpriced, the other serves warm sushi that makes you sick... In desperation (and being too tired to drive into Dallas), we made our way to Benihana's. The food failed to meet our admittedly low expectations. The sushi selection was boring and cliche, and just about everything was filled with 'krab'. Even the soft-shelled crab, which you'd figure would have to have a crab with a shell, was filled with 'krab' meat.
At least the service was good. We're going to have to start making the trip into Dallas for quality sushi.
