A real honest-to-god drive-in movie theater . . . right in my backyard (well kinda). Bengies drive-in, located in Baltimore, MD, is the absolute best.
I discovered Bengies after having my son six years ago. I was sick of not being able to go to the movies any more because I had a baby. I figured a drive-in would be perfect. I did my research and found Bengies. So six years later and one more kid Bengies is still one of our favorite destinations.
We live in Falls Church, on the border of Arlington, so a drive to Bengies is a hike (90 minutes). But when we get there, it's worth it. You get to see three movies plus classic cartoons. We usually sit through two movies and often times don't leave the theater til after 1 am.
Don't bring your own food . . . more fun to enjoy the greasy, delish stuff at the concession stand. Also, Bengies' makes the bulk of its profit off of selling food and drinks so if you opt to bring your own stuff in, you pay $7.00 for a permit.
Bengies features all the top blockbusters. Depending on the movie, get there at least 30-minutes prior to opening. Only once have I had to wait in a long line to enter and that was because it was the first show. Once we entered, there was ample parking (Bengies is HUGE).
Depending on the size of your car, you will be ushered into the appropriate spot. I use to drive a pretty big car (Chrysler Pacifica) and I had to park in the big-ass-car-section. Now I've got a Beetle (yeah, with two kids . . . go figure) and I can park with the little sedans.
Lots of people bring lawn chairs and sit outside to watch the movie. This is great unless the bugs are biting. In summer, definitely bring bug spray to keep the bugs at bay. I'd also recommend bringing a radio if you sit outside. It will amplify the sound coming from your car radio. Bengies sound system works off of your car's radio. You turn to the appropriate FM-station to hear the movie.
The bathrooms are clean and I've hardly ever had to wait in line.
Bring blankets, pillows, etc. anything to make your stay comfy. If you want to have a good experience, you'll be there for at least three hours.
The 2008 season starts this spring. Click to the website to check the schedule.
One of the few remaning drive-in movie theaters in the DC area. A great way to experience a piece of Americana. Roll in with some friends and a cooler full of food and sit back and watch new movies on the big screen while listening to the sound blare through your car speakers.
On Friday and Saturday nights, they have triple features.
If you're bringing in food, you'll need to pay $7 for an outside food permit. Otherwise, just hit the concession stand.
Definitely worth the drive from DC.
