It's really about who you get. I've had okay experiences with some of the girls there, but now I only make appointments with Jennifer. Jennifer does not rush through her work, is very careful, and makes sure that you are satisfied with the arch, thickness, etc. If you want something changed, she'll fix it until you like it. But usually she's great at shaping elegant brows that fit your face so you won't have to ask her to change anything. I think she's so good that I even had her do my brows for my wedding.
The other girls are not as consistent, and are sometimes not very friendly...one of them was very pushy with the tip..she told me a few times, "Make sure you give the tip envelope back to me directly!" Usually you can just leave a tip discreetly at the cashier.
But overall, I still do like this place very much and will continue to be a regular customer.
Christine is the BEST person at this location! She is the only person I will have do my eyebrows at this location.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SERVICE !
Specifically, the incident happened to me @ the benefit makeup station rather than the benefit brow bar. But it ruined my impression (that use to be great!) of benefit and ijust wanted to let you guys know who to avoid when you walk into that benefit counter inside macy's.
i dropped by at the counter today since i wanted to tryout the eye shadow colors before i ordered them online (i tend to like ordering them online since it comes with 2 free sampples !). i never even asked for help and was trying the eyeshadows on the back of my hand when a tall lady walks towards me offering me service. i REALLY wished i remembered her name but she is VERY noticeable and easy to describe. she has jet black short hair that has a bunch of gold highlights in it, wears neon colors, has ridiculously sharp nails (that she is proud of), extremely skinny, and has the most TRANNIEST vibe you will ever receive from anybody ! if you ever go to benefit, AVOID HER.
she did the most inconsiderate makeup job on me and was RUDE. i had streaks allover my face due to her literally "slapping" the foundation brush on my face and she mixed so many colors of eyeshadows on my lids that it basically turned disgusting and dark looking. she constantly boasted of how she was a selected benefit employee, not a macys one, and that just made my impression of benefit even worse. at the end of her "makeover", or more of a disaster she did on my face, i tried to leave after thanking her. she got in my face and said " WHAT? youre not gonna buy anything? i mean seirosuly, i just helped you. whyw oould you do that. you should seriosulyget something, i JUST helped you. did you think i helped you for fun?". i was SO SHOCKED ! i told her that i was going to make purchases online andthat i was only considering the colorstoday. then, she let out a RIDICULOUS sigh in your face and mumbled "ugh i wasted my time" and made sure that i heard it.
it was absolutely RIDICULOUS customer service andit shattered my once beautiful impression of benefit.
if you ever go to the macy's benefit, WATCH OUT for the tall skinny black haired tranny one. she will ruin your day !
I guess this is more a review of the cosmetic counter than the brow bar.
My friend and I needed make-up for prom, and being the noobs that we are, we approached the Clinique counter to ask them for some advice. Their first words to us? "We have a two item minimum purchase policy if you want us to help you" uhhh. okay...to Benefit we go!
Melissa, the make up artist, spent about an hour with us, helping us choose colours and teaching us how to put the cosmetics on even though she was the only one on shift. She didn't push us into buying anything and was willing to listen to our opinions.
This isn't the first time I've had a great experience at Benefit...I guess that's why I came back :)
Christine at the Brow Bar did a great job with waxing my eyebrows and lip. She took her time shaping and trimming my brows! Yes, they trim your brows too! The other places I usually go just wax and tweez your brows, but here they even trim it for you to really make it look nicely groomed. The only downside is the wait! Good thing this place is at the mall so you can browse around while you wait! I will definitely be back, but will make an appointment the next time I do so I don't have to wait forever!

Need perfect eyebrows? This is the place to get them. That's all i've ever had waxed here, and for a 18$ wax + tip, It's worth it. I don't think I would go anywhere else. I think i've had my eyebrows done by almost every esthetician that works here because I'm not picky and I've never had a bad wax here. They shape your eyebrows in a complimentary way to your face, so no skinny minnie almost impossible to see eyebrows.. And you don't have to draw them on if you don't feel like it either.
It's good to set up an appointment if it's Prom "season," or right before some big holiday where people like to get dressed up. It's pretty calm on weekdays, but friday, sat, and sunday it gets pretty busy.

i love the brow kit i use it every day.
im not to sure about the foundation though........ its veryyy watery
dr. feelgood moisturizer made me breakout... overall great service!
I really liked this place. I often want to do things on a whim & hate having to make an appt. I walked up, a technician was free & I was done in about five minutes. I think she might have taken a bit too much off of my brows, but in general they looked great, the price was right & it took only minutes out of my day.

*UPDATE: 12/29/2007: Just found out Trang is no longer at the Brow Bar. :(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's my caveat: This is my first time getting my brows worked on. I had thought about it for a while but hadn't committed to doing anything about my brows when I saw my sister end up with facial skin burns due to hot wax. (Not here! At a nail salon and a hair salon - We both have sensitive skin)
But, I ended up deciding to just take the plunge since I noticed my brows were getting a little "wild" and growing a little crazily.
On Saturday, I stopped by to see if they could put me on the waiting list but they were so packed that they asked me to stop by in two hours to see what it was like then.
On Sunday morning, I stopped by again since it seemed like it was really uncrowded in the cosmetics area. They put me on the list immediately and told me to head back in 30 minutes.
I luckily got Trang. She was fantastic! She spoke to me about my fears on waxing (getting burned) and talked to my sister and me about how the wax they use at the Benefit Brow Bar is nicer and formulated for sensitive skin, but was willing to just tweeze if that is what I wanted. I decided to go for it.
She waxed my brows and tweezed to give it a good shape. When finished she put on some coconutty-aloe stuff to help soothe things and then put on some other stuff which would help prevent breakouts. She then did a little makeup for me since I was a little red.
A great experience. When I go back, I'll definitely ask for her only!
Oh yeah, one more thing, some woman apparently was staring at my whole brow experience and really getting too close in checking it out. My sister gave her a "WTH-do-you-think-you're-doing?-That's-so-RUDE!" stare and she took off.
Does anyone have Trang's number? If so can you email it to me at gladmachain@yahoo.com? A while ago I got it off this site but it got erased for some reason?
Trang's great... no one has been able to do the same great job she does. I've given a lot of people a chance since Trang has been gone and I just haven't been happy.
If you have her number or a way to contact her please help?
I stopped by before a work meeting to get my brows done, since my regular brow place was out of the way. I didn't make an appointment and the lady you check in with was more concerned looking at her face than noticing I was right in front of her waiting.. She looked a little annoyed when she saw me.. but whatever my eyebrows really needed some attention. She signed me in and said it'd be a 15 minute wait. With that much time, I went straight to the purse department! After making a wish list of purses.. I came back and my eyebrow lady was Jessica (i think).. She asked if she just wanted me to clean up the strays.. And I was like no way... I need you to shape 'em and make a cute little arch.. with that little instructions she made my brows beautiful. Of course she used some products to get me to buy.. and I did. =X I spent $50 on my brows.. $18 for the waxing.. $30 +tax for Brow Zing.. which was worth it.. I've been using Brow Zing ever since, I wonder how I ever did without.
I saw a review in the SJ Mercury about the Benefit Brow Bar, and decided to get my eyebrows done. Believe me-- I had the bushiest and most lopsided brows.
At the time, the brow grooming was $15. I wasn't intimidated by the wax or the tweezing. The results were amazing! Although the person overwaxed my brows, they looked 1000000x better!! :) Wow! I was amazed with the results. I just waited until my eyebrows grew out some more before maintaining them.
Since the price increase, I'm not sure how likely I would go back.
Sarah is a good eyebrow shaper. I went to her with grown out eyebrows and she did an amazing job. The third time I went to her, my eyebrow shape looked good but one was thinner than the other. It wasn't bad, only noticable upon close inspection but it was enough to make me not want to go back unless I was desperate.
WHICH, brings me to my next point. Their waiting/appointment policy is awful. I once called to make an appointment (after being put on hold) only to be told I should come by and drop in because Sarah wasn't taking appointments. I made it clear I wanted to see Sarah. After waiting in excess of two hours ( I walked around the mall a bit, but came back because I didn't want to lose my spot in line). I saw Sarah working on the girl ahead of me. I was up next. FINALLY. But Miss Sarah decided to go on her lunch break (which I was informed would be an hour). At that point I was so frustrated, I just left. Waiting three hours for eyebrows is horrendous and I will not go there ever again.
I love Sarah and Christine at Brow Bar! They always do a good job and with some plucking in between visits, my brow shaping usually lasts a good month or so. I love Benefit make up also and the girls always try out new products on you without really pressuring you to buy anything. I highly suggest making an appointment since they get pretty busy so walk-ins can be frustrating. I trust them here so I don't mind spending a little more than the average. And they're always so fast without sacrificing precision!
I came here with my friend to watch her get her brows waxed.
I don't believe in waxing anymore (recent threading convert) and now that I look back on it..my friend didn't really enjoy her waxing experience here.
She paid about $18 for the wax. The lady came over (she made an appointment earlier but they said it's basically anyone who is available next if you don't have a preference) and was not very friendly. You would expect most of the girls there to be nice and chatty but she looked mean. She waxed and it wasn't amazing (like it is with Deepa!!).
Overall, that particular service, not as friendly as it could be.
Gets crowded in that area with tons of people walking past and staring.
They are usually rushed and don't take their time.
1. It costs a shit load.
2. The girl took forever to do them and made me wait, even though my appointment was 25 minutes ago.
3. Made my arches all wrong and eyebrows too thin
4. Tried to get me to buy benefit face cream, 'cos I said my skin was getting to be too dry. She didn't sell the cream herself.. but called the sales girl from the benefit counter, who started the whole thing as banter and before I knew it.. i had somehow said yes to a 50 buck cream as well.
Will not go back.
For those of you guys who come here only a fair warning from a beauty professional.
MAKE SURE THESE GIRLS WHO ARE WAXING THE BROWS ARE LICENSED!! Anyone can tweeze brows and not have a license, but you need to be either a licensed aesthetician or cosmetologist to be able to wax.
I haven't had a bad experience here, but one of my bestfriends did and the girl who did her brows, well wasn't licensed. I guess the aesthetician was on lunch and one of the Benefit girls decided to do it. She ended up leaving with one side thinner and shorter than the other. Then when she called to complain found out that the girl who worked on her wasn't licensed.
So those who go...BEWARE....
P.S. Cosmetolgy, Aestheticians, and Nail Tech Licenses now have pictures of the people who own the license. So look for it.
I used to only come here and never venture anywhere else to get my eyebrows done. I would request a certain girl and then end up getting someone else. Sometimes there's no wait, sometime you have to wait 30 min. Sometimes my brows ended up looking great, other time not. They're very inconsistent here! I prefer threading now!
If you're going to come here I think Sarah (if she's stil there) does the best job.
its all about trang. seriously, she rocks. i have visited the los gatos location and had so-so results but i have NEVER been disappointed here or with trang's services.
you do need to schedule an appt. however as she is almost always booked.
I used to get my brows waxed down the street from my house, until an unfortunate incident about a month ago left me looking like i traveled back in time to 1994 and handed my Tweezermans to a flannel-shirt rocking, brown-lipstick-wearing 8th grader with astigmatism at that - my shit was straight up crooked, sloppy, and obviously rushed through. It took all of me to NOT try and correct it myself, which was definitely an exercise in restraint seeing as I have to look at the damned things everyday and I can't really pull off the whole hair-covering-my-face thing a la Samara in "The Ring", so I had to just suck it up and let the fuckers grow out for a whole month.
And a couple of days ago, I couldn't take it anymore and made a call to the Brow Bar to snag an appointment with Christine. See, before the waxing debacle, I bought BeneFit Brow Zing in Dark but never got around to using it so I figured here I could kill two birds with one stone: 1) have an expert turn my eyebrows back to normal from the check-mark, sperm-looking aberrations that I allowed to inhabit my face for four whole weeks, and 2) learn how to use the Brow Zings that had been sitting untouched in my medicine cabinet that whole time.
Done and done. And might I add.... done well.
Me and my now-beautiful brows thank this place wholeheartedly. I will definitely be back.
I have been to this brow 3 times, each time with a different lady doing my eyebrows. each time i have left EXTREMELY happy at the results. naturally my brows have no noticeable arch, or shape. . . these ladies gave my brows a nice clean shape. granted, it is embarrassing getting waxed at the stations right at the entrance to the mall, but the last time i was there i was fortunate enough to get a station in the corner of the store. ALSO, i can see how people would give less stars because it is extremely busy here on the weekends, so i always go during the week when its not too bad
I admit that the girls do a fantastic job, however their organizational skills concerning scheduling are absolutely terrible. Last month I showed up as a walk-in and was asked to wait 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of wondering around the mall I returned to the counter and was told to wait another 15. 15 minutes later I returned and was taken to the work area to get my brows done...finally. Then a girl and her boyfriend walked up to the girl who was about to start working on me and they started chatting....to my dismay, I was told that they were going to take the other girl before me and I was asked to wait by the check-in counter! I was so embarrassed.
I am a believer that mistakes occur occasionally in the best of establishments so I scheduled an appt. for 1:00pm, Sunday, a week ahead. I remember that I was the first one to be signed up for that day in their schedule book. However, the day before my appointment, I received a call telling me that that time was double booked and that I should reschedule or come in as a walk-in...You have to be kidding! Remember, first time is a mistake; second time is a trend so I will never waste my time and money at Benefit's Brow Bar again. I have found another salon that does a better job and for half the price as Benefit.
Finding a salon that does a great job on your eye brows is important, but finding a place that does a great job AND treats you with respect should be part of the equation as well.
I have worked for benefit as a Beauty Advisor for many years, and I can ASSURE YOU THAT ALL OF THE AESTHETICIANS ARE LICENSED. I get my brows done at our brow bar and of course they look awesome- we have a drop in list for all of those who happen to just come on by and want to get their brows done- however I do recommend that you book an appt with us, especially on the weekends...just because we get super duper booked.
Update*** another brow bar has opened in the south bay area!!! Macy's Oakridge now has a brow bar also!
- Thanks
DEEPA?! WHERE WERE YOU TODAY?! i went to deepa's place ready to hold my eyelids down and the "OPEN" sign was closed. my lady 'stache is BANGIN' and Paco the Unibrow wants to go home, so i couldn't wait and i drove over here. i've gone here many times in 2004 and 2005 and i saw angelica and she's the best. we'd talk about people as she would work on my face and she'd always cover my face with makeup when she's done and she didn't judge me even though i'd wait for my unibrow to grow out. OH! and she'd always put her hand over the part she just waxed. i don't know what's up with asian waxers....they never put their hand on my frekkin lip or eyebrows to stop that burning sensation. anyway, i've been roaming around looking for a great waxer since angelica was unreasonably fired...anyway....i walked up to the counter and hoped that the lady with her back turned to me wasn't asian....and the homegirl was. here i am cussing to myself because if i wanted something asian, i couldve gone to my homie nancy on berryessa for fifteen dollars not 30. whatever. nancy wouldve used the same wax she used on someone's cooch on my face.
I've been there once and wasn't completely satisfied with when she was done with me. I didn't look horrible (any more than usual and they were indeed more cleaned up) but I asked her not give me rounded eyebrows and that's what I got.
My friends said (half-kiddingly, I hope) that I looked perpetually surprised.
I went to the Brow Bar on a Wednesday morning around 11ish. I didn't have an appointment and they took me right away. Be careful though, i asked if it was normal that they were this dead and she said no, they were usually really busy. So if you value your time, you should probably just make an appointment. I guess I just got lucky.
The girl that did my brows was Christina. She was super friendly and she did a great job. I had never gotten my brows done before... yep, i was a brow virgin! She made me feel comfortable and when it was all over i wished i had done it a long time ago. I can't believe i walked around with those crazy brows before!
I feel like a new woman!
****UPDATE*****
I went again and it sucked. I had to wait for about 15 minutes, which was ok cause i didn't have an appointment. But the lady that took me didn't even talk to me, she just started waxing away! Didn't even ask what i wanted. What if i wanted something special? It hurt this time too. Not really when she pulled the strip off but when she pressed it down. She was pressing my eyeballs into their sockets! I was just hoping she would leave me with some eyebrows, and she did.
I like this place. I have had Jessica and Christine do my brows and both listened to what I wanted. At other salons I have had a problem where they wax too much and my eyebrows end up 3 hairs wide! This has not been a problem at the benefit brow bar. Just make sure you communicate exactly what you want!
Trang and Sarah are the best there. I have seriously walked away from the brow bar when either one of them are not there. (And for someone with 2 girls and precious babysitter time dwindling, that is major!)
Trang is friendly and patient. She takes such care with making sure that you are happy with her work. They are your brows after all. She always asks questions before she does any major changes!
Sarah is just a sweetheart. She broke me in the first time I tried the brow bar. Again, followed my instructions and made suggestions. Her skills with wax, in my opinion, is in inverse proportion to her age. She is young!
Downside and the only reason why the brow bar does not get 5 stars; NOBODY ever picks up the phone at the Benefit counter so it makes it IMPOSSIBLE to check their schedules/make appointment.
NOTE TO Benefit cosmetic girls : turn down the music a little so you can get more appointments in.
Yay I finally got to try this place after reading mostly good reviews. I got my brows waxed by Christina who did a fabulous job and even though I had my eyes closed, I could tell she knew what she was doing. (Yes, in the past, I've had someone bust out some measuring device to go back and forth from each brow.) I'm very pleased I finally found a brow place that's so convenient, inexpensive, and a girl who knows what she's doing.
*UPDATE*
Christina left to start up Bombshell in San Mateo. I was soo sad. I ended up having my eyebrows waxed my Christine. I stood there waiting and watching her do this girl's brows and honestly, wasn't that impressed. But, I didn't have much time to find another brow waxer. It wasn't a "Wow, love it" job, but it was alright. Would I come back? Probably not, unless I'm really pressed for time.
Love it. Can't seem to find other places that will do as good a job as them, which for some reason seems suprising to me because you have all these nail shops and beauty parlors whom always seem to give me a hard time, either by coming out of them with uneven, or ungroomed (??) brows, or a red, swollen, pulsating upper lip. If only I didn't have to sit out in the big open space and let everyone that shops Macy's see them tame my bushy brows and mustache.
Best to call to make an appointment with them, or else you might find yourself waiting too long. They have already made a big improvement to stay open 'til late! Good job!
One sketchy thing is that one of them tried to sell me something and have me return it at another visit to help her bring her sales quota up.... Ssssketchyyy!!!
I've definitly had a mixed bad of results here. Ask for Christine, she has a very high attention to detail and does an excellent job.
This place came highly recommended by a co-worker, so I made an appointment and walla- I'm sitting in Tran's chair explaining what I'd like to see.
Results- MARVELOUS!
If you really want someone to listen, be gentle and give you what you want- choose Tran. She is awesome. I have always gotten what I like, and she'll even fix your occasional over-plucking blunder... like magically!
Warning: Like the other posts mention- the girls at the benefit counter are F&*^%$ TERRIBLE. Make your appointment over the phone, so you don't need to interact with them too much. They get a couple of minus points, but I'm rating the brow bar, not those losers.
Ok...CALL AHEAD and get ready to PAY! It's worth it, and I love it, but it's too expensive, and always booked solid. Christina does a great job. About $18 for brow job. I always get suckered into the products too, but have liked all of them, so money well spent... i guess :0)
im the kind of girl who doesn't really wax her eyebrows..because i guess i never really needed to? but one day my mother & i were shopping at vf and i was like, oh hell you know what? im getting my brows done. she was like, no dont do it, dont do it. but my stubborn ass self had to go do it. so i put my name down and had to wait an hour and a half. so i came back at the time i was supposed to and was ready to get these babies waxed! so i had an older lady do my brows,she was super sweet, and i thought she knew what she was talking about, but i was obviously wrong. so, while she was waxing/tweezing, doing her thing, i was so so excited. i was like, oh my gosh im going to look like a new woman, this is so exciting, my face is going to look transformed! (i know, i was totally overreacting, but i had never ever done this before, and im always reading in magazines, if you have perfect brows, then you dont have to wear a lot of makeup cause your face...yeah etc, you get the picture). the money i would have paid to see my moms face when she saw my finished brows...haha, now that i think about its funny, but back then i was like oh.shit. then my mom was like: "oh...it looks....good..." and then you know how when someone says that, you get that sinking feeling in your stomach? well i looked at my brows and i was like...oh lord. they were thinner then i asked and much shorter. i had specifically told her to keep the length of my brows but just wax what didnt need to be there, and not to give them too much arch. is that really SO hard? she gave me a really big arch and they were pretty thin. i was so disappointed. so i came home and then my mom had to top it off by looking at me all critically & crazy and said: you look kind of cheap with your brows done like that. and then my boyfriend was like." i liked how you looked before."
that was it, game over. i actually started crying for like 3 hours and proceeded to fall asleep from so much crying on top of my laundry. but they eventually grew back and im proud to say that i dont ever wax my brows anymore and i think they look fine.
the lady i went to was really really sweet ill give her that, but as for the brows? wow, she really jacked me up for a couple months.
*now you guys are probably going to go look at my pictures and stare at my brows huh? ahahha :)
Based on the review by A.S. on Yelp, I decided to give the Benefit Brow Bar a try. And I'm so glad that I did! Trang was the aesthetician who worked on my brows. She was very friendly and took her time to ensure that my brows were perfect. I've never had such great arches, and for $15, it's well worth it! One thing worth noting is that the Brow Bar is set up much like a hair salon where each aesthetician has a station. There were four small stations, each with a mirror, located near the entrance of Macy's. This was the first time that I got a brow wax while sitting. I noticed that two women were watching Trang work her magic on my brows. I didn't mind, but I just want to point out that if you want privacy, you won't get it here. Just remember that it doesn't take that long- about 15 minutes. When you're done, a sales assoicate at the Benefit counter will ring up the charge, and give you a small envelop, if you want to leave a tip, which you definitely should!
Normally, I love this place. This is what usually happens when I go in. I stroll in w/out an appointment, find Christine and ignore all other free brow-ticians, chat with her for a second and then she sneaks me in between appointments because 1) she's super nice, 2) she does a great job on my brows, and 3) she's really a shrewd business woman. Plus, with Christine it has been the least painful experience of my life.
However today this is what happened. I arrive at Benefit counter when it opens to see a list of 7 people before me and only one lady doing brows. The ladies at the counter are SUPER rude, and ignore you, and give you false estimates about how long it will take to actually get to you, and then proceed to wait for 2 hrs to get my brows done. But since I have to go to a wedding, they must be done today, so I must prevail in this endeavor. So I wait, and wait, and check back, and wait some more. When I check back the ladies are rude. I mean seriously Benefit counter people, how do you get your job? I don't know how ANY of you sell any makeup or get commission. You're not friendly, not helpful, and all around rude. Not only that but normally the actual brow part is quick, but I'm waiting around for a lazy counter sales person to ring me up. Total incompetence. They are just all to busy gabbing amongst themselves.
Ok but back to the brow. My brows look great. Although, this was the most painful experience I have had at this place. The only person working today was Jessica, and she was this sweet Asian lady, with mad skill for shaping, but not for the painlessness. I don't have the perpetually inquisitive look, that sometimes can happen from bad browing, but instead this very natural and subtle look. She spent a lot of time sculpting it to perfection. While I was twice nearly on the verge of tears.
What I learned today. BeneFIT counter girls are not fit to benefit from my money. Jessica is awesome with brow shaping if I can endure more pain. Christine while painless in the process does pretty decent shaping as well. So the ultimate question is... pain vs. awesome shaping...
christina or sarah all the way. i usually get my brows threaded b/c i think it gives me a cleaner look, but decided to give Benefit a shot b/c it was so conveniently located. christina did my brows the first time and it was amazing. i couldn't stop looking at them! beautifully shaped! very impressive for waxing.
i had my brows done by 2 other girls there (can't remember the names) and while it wasn't bad, i wasn't very impressed.
this past time i went, sarah did my brows and again, i was wowed. i noted to her that i like a higher arch, rather than just a curve. she did her thing and they came out perfectly arched, just how i like them.
cons: at $18, it's a bit steep but it's so convenient when you're already shopping at the mall. weekends are reserved for drop-ins, so be ready to wait if you're coming on friday-sunday.
