I have nothing against chains or heart attacks or delicious summer frozen treats.

This is a Ben and Jerry's. It has ice cream and some auxiliary treats like smoothies. On the pricey side. No seating.

I like it and I'm glad it's there but why it gets more than three stars is beyond me.

I will always have a wealth of appreciation for Ben and Jerry's. Especially this location, for a variety of reasons:

1.) Jerry went to Oberlin. (http://www.highbeam.co...) Nough said.
2.) I love all of the artwork associated with Ben and Jerry's.
3.) The tipping bell here is genius. Though I've seen many a shy server blush as some lame-o throws in a nickel - and they have to ring the darn bell in order to acknowledge the gesture.
4.) Waffle cones.
5.) Thick, can barely make it up the straw -  shakes
6)  Unreal moist brownie sundaes, topped with smooth chocolate syrup.
7.) Creative ice-cream flavor names.
8.) The leisurely walk down Haight street with my melting mound of frozen milk glory (familiar Haight smells go nicely with ice-cream)
9.) Cherry Garcia Ice-cream.
10.) Even better - Cherry Garcia Frozen Yogurt.

Trust.

I thought going to the ice cream store was supposed to be fun.

Our recent trip to BAJ on Haight was nothing close to fun thanks to the poor attitude of the "manager" who identified himself as Dan. We won't be patronizing this business and are encouraging others in our school to BEWARE.

On a hot Friday afternoon some parents of the newest public elementary school on Haight St.  (Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila) decided to treat our kids to some ice cream.  BAJ is only a block away so we ventured off, about six kids and five adults.

When we arrived a visibly annoyed Dan, started serving us, seemingly upset that we were so many people all wanting ice cream and equally upset that we inquired if there were "children scoops" available. He admonished us to keep the kids off the short lip in front of the ice cream stations.  This lip is 18 inches off the ground and appeared to be a stepping perch for kids to view and select their ice cream.

Apparently not, according to Dan. He admonished us and told the kids to get off of the "perch". Ok,  I was fine with that.

When he was asked to get a "regular" cone for one of the kids, he said we call them "cake cones",  to which I replied "I call them regular cones" to which he replied, "then I'll bring you the wrong cone", my reply "then I'll ask for another" then Dan said, "then I'll ask you to leave the store."

Ok,  if it were not for the fact that we had six kidergartners ready for their scoop of happiness,  I would have spun around and left right then.  But,  we were committed.

We purchased about $50-60 dollars of ice cream and pledged to each other never to return to this business and to furthermore tell all of the other parents at or new school of BAJ's unfriendly attitude towards the children and parents.

Note to Management:  Dan needs some re-training if he is  going to represent your business in the way it is promoted in advertisements ie: folksy, warm and friendly.  I'm sure he has a lot of difficult people to deal with on Haight St., but his attitude is losing money for your franchise.  We will go elsewhere.

More like a 3.5 because of the ordering set-up but whatevers, it was still very refreshing after eating indian food that left the after taste in our mouths.  Even though the day was cold it was still a good treat to cleanse the palette.  When we got in after 3pm it was very crowded with the line going up to the door.  There were also not that many workers actually helping the customers while there were a few coming in and out of the back not really do anything.  When it finally reached my turn I wanted the half baked but they didnt have it even though the tag was still there so i was quite dissapointed.  However, I just ordered the regular oatmeal raisin cookie ice cream on a cake cone and my scoop was REALLY generous.  But for $4.50 a scoop it better be =P.

I never really go to places like this in L.A. because, 1.) I don't need the extra poundage, and 2.) The lines are normally long.

Well, being that I was on a mini-vacation with my friends (fellow Yelpers), who am I to rain on the parade of eating/trying out new places? When in Rome (or S.F.), why not, right?

So, after walking around the Haight area, I needed something to cool me down, refresh me from all the walking. Being from Southern California, I hardly walk, so, it was nice to do so and just take in the experience. S.F. reminds me a lot like NYC because of all the trekking you do on foot.

The store was empty (besides us, maybe because it was a Sunday morning?) So, I decided on a smoothie (Island something, had mango, and sherbert) and it sure quenched my thirst. Especially after all that walking, it was a nice refreshing drink. Was it healthy? Was it really good that I basically packed in more calories? Who cares! It was good and got the job done.

I can't wait to try other things on the menu down here now. Well, maybe I'll go for a nice long walk before heading to Ben & Jerry's and hopefully the lines are not that bad.

I'm writing this review on Ben & Jerry's since it is on the fabulous intersection of Haight & Ashbury, a world famous San Francisco destination.

The other day I had the flavor of Cake Batter.  Not sure if they sell this in the grocery store, but it was tasty with chocolate frosting swirl and yellow cake flavor.  Takes me back to my favorite Duncan Hines cake.

An ice cream store owned by 2 hippies is in the perfect spot in the Haight.  Love it!

I Love Chunky Monkey.
Did they steal Mr. Monkey's bananas?  Did he give them up willingly or was he forced by electric shock?  Did the Evil Berkely Mad Scientists make him put in the nuts and chocolate chunks or was it voluntary?  Do you know what I'm talkin about or is it the brain freeze from just eating a pint of the best S#*T on earth? Help Me, I think I'm becoming addicted.  I will need an intervention.  F#@k that S*%t.  I need more Chunky Monkey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ice Cream is really good depending on which one you get.  You win some, you lose some....

I got the Strawberry Cheesecake, and I like the one at Baskin Robbins better.

Service was bad!!!!!!!

In short, if I buy Ben and Jerry's... I'm going to the grocery stores!

As as avid foodie and Yelper, you must try to eat as much as you can and review it. (Not if this helps for those that are trying to lose weight).....
Upon having a delicious "peaceful" breakfast here on Haight and Ashbury, we walked around and came across a few cool stores and the sun was in full stride. Waiting for our taxi ride, We turn around and whala!  A Ben and Jerry's! Well, since I love my coffee ice cream, I had one scoop with the waffle bowl. Yummmmmm. Nothing fancy, just a plain ol scoop on a mid-sunday morning. Summertime, I can only imagine long lines here....

Enjoy.

I love birthdays! The free cone give-away was awesome! At first we walked by and decided to pass on it because the line was somewhat long.  But after grabbing a bite to eat over at Squat and Gobble, we decided to tough it out and wait in the line...hey, can't beat free ice cream on a cold SF night, right? To our surprise, the line moved rather quickly.  We probably waited no more than 15 minutes and we were able to satisfy our sweet tooth.

The caramel chunk was ok.  I regret not going for the Coffee Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz flavor that the lady ahead of us was raving about.

I'd rather have a McDonald's soft serve, but the line was really long.

Decided to try B&J's since I was in the Haight.  My 'Half-Baked' fro-yo was so-so.  I was with a couple friends and wanted to pay for their items.  The guy behind the cashier said he couldn't help me - all I was asking for was to be rung up.  I had to wait a while until our last item was complete.  Maybe that's why my fro-yo was icy.

I think this would make a wonderful talk thread topic- "What's your favorite Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream- and why???" the why part is what makes it even more personal- cuz lets face it- your first time with chunky monkey or cherry garcia and strawberry cheesecake- would probably pale in comparison to mine--- or maybe not...
Sooooo many flavors- sooooo many memories...g, pg-13, nc-17 or x --you'll be coming back for more ;-)

PS- You can buy me ice cream here ANYTIME (wink wink)

Long ago, I was a Scooperologist at the Ben & Jerry's on Columbus in North Beach and every day I'd have myself a large cup of Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz.  Nowadays I head to the Haight-Ashbury store for my fix.  Sometime ask them to make a Vermonster for you: 30 scoops of ice cream, 4 brownies, two cookies, a fuckload of sprinkles, and a spoon.  That's more cow than a 32 oz. strip steak.

Bonus points for committing to hiring a staff of troubled youth to get 'em off the streets.  The guys who work there are really nice!

Okay, I have to admit... I really don't like Ben & Jerry's ice cream.  Never have. I used to get coupons for free scoops so I 've tried a ton of flavors, but there's just something about it... too rich or something.  I don't know.

Anyway, today was so friggin hot that I just HAD to have an ice cream shake.  I was complaining out loud that "there aren't any damn ice cream shops on Haight St." when my partner said, "Duh, Ben & Jerry's?"

So I went and got a shake.  It was made with coffee ice cream and it was okay.  Not thick enough for my tastes, but it did come with whipped cream on top.  The freakin' hippie that made it dropped the not-plastic-but-made-of-biodegradable-cornstarch cup on the ground and offered to wash it off before filling it with my shake.  Oh fer cryin out loud.  *Just throw the damned biodegradable thing in the garbage and give me a new one, ya friggin hippie!*

We all know that Ben & Jerry's ice cream is great, the neighborhood this parlor is in is a huge tourist trap and that everybody stops in here on a warm day for some inter-shopping refreshment.  But on a warm Saturday morning, before the crowds have arrived or late in the evening when all the tourists have gone home, it's nice to pop in for a scoop of your favorite flavor.

You just can't knock it.

I live above a supermarket, so I'm much more likely to satisfy ice cream cravings by walking downstairs to get a pint or across the street for a Peace Pop.

I don't mind having a Ben & Jerry's on Haight and Ashbury. It certainly fits the neighborhood better than the Gap. It's not like the Upper Haight needs another head shop or used clothing store.

The waffle cones are tasty (but pricey - it's just ice cream). It gives the tourists someplace to go, and once or twice a year they have free ice cream day - that's reason enough for me.

I liked this place a whole lot better when it was a partner scoop shop. Sad that they couldn't keep it open as that, but props to the new owner for hiring lots of the kids in the job training program, which was part of the store's previous state.
Still, and though it's not the fault of the store, only 3 stars for shattering my idealistic view of the socially responsible Ben & Jerry's store that couldn't afford to stay open as is... that was the main reason I bought from there. For now, I prefer saving my $3.25 for a whole pint of B&J at the store vs. just a scoop in a cone.

Ok, so I'll cop to the fact that I'm writing about a pint of B&J's that was purchased from a corner store, and not the actual Haight Street store - BUT, I've just had B&J half-baked frozen yogurt and I want to write about it.

I was craving - CRAVING - ice cream to have tonight, while i snuggled under the 'lectric blanket, watching my new Netflix delivery of Six Feet Under.  Since I had no ice cream, I set out to the corner place to get some.  After much internal wrangling and a quick pinch of my extra belly, I decided to go for the Half-Baked Frozen Yogurt.

What a mistake!  Yuck.  The texture is grainy, the flavor was bland, and just tasted like sugar.  The brownie and cookie dough bits were just tough pieces of sticky goo in the yogurt.  Terrible!

And this episode of Six Feet Under isn't even that good.   Boo.

I'm not a big fan of their ice cream but one afternoon it dawned on me that I just HAD to have a huge sundae on a cone. As I waited in line, though I realized that the scooper must have been suffering some sort of withdrawal b/c he was shaking all over and could barely place a single scoop on a cone. But before I could turn around and leave, it was my turn and when prompted as to what I wanted, I blurted out ice cream sundae or whatever the heck that monstrous three scoop with nuts and chocolate syrup and whipped cream thing was called.

Oh god, the next ten minutes was so horribly painful as the guy proceeded to shakily put this damn thing together. The manager kept murmuring reassuring words to him throughout the whole ordeal. When he was finally done, I was handed a drippy mess that leaked all over my hands and onto my shirt.

But the scooper looked so darn happy with himself that I couldn't bear to say anything. I paid, left and hid behind a trashcan for a while to make sure he wasn't looking and threw the whole mess into the trashcan. I hope scooper man recovered successfully.

So the individual pints are probably cheaper than the ice cream in a cone, but the pints don't come with a delicious waffle cone, or hot cookies.

Every time I walk past this place, I'm so tempted to go in and eat everything.

The employees are always happy, which if you work in an ice cream shop how could you be grumpy, and there is this crazy dude that works there my roommates and I affectionately refer to as the "bee guy".

If you're looking for the hippie Haight experience, interacting with this guy is a must.  He has red dreadlocks, is a super friendly server, but he talks with an annunciated zzzz instead of s.  This guy is rad, and our favorite employee by far.

I read somewhere that this place was some sort of community outreach thing to give underpriveledged kids a job or something.  I forget the details.

Anyway, I think the whole staff here is high.  Yea, I know it is Haight and that smell may be coming from outside, but they have to ask like 5 times to get your order correct, and it still takes 15 minutes for like, a shake.

I think it would be faster to drive to Maggie Mudd's or Naia and you'd end up with a better treat anyways.

I know how unsound it is to have lots of sugar on a long weekend, but then there are certain things in life you just need to indulge. And Ben & Jerry is one of them. I can't express how much I enjoy the less guilt Black Raspberry Low Fat Frozen Yogurt  topped with the luxurious butter pecan ice-cream in a super coconut chocolate ice-cream.

Damn you Fish Food!  Oh how I love you.  However when I made my first visit to an actual B&J shop I went with... well, I don't remember what it was called... but I think it had 42 different types of Chocolate, mixed with 4 types of Brownies, 8 types of chocolate chip cookie dough and was covered in Hot fudge, cold fudge, room temperature fudge, snickers, kit kats and hershies kisses... and it was good.  I don't see how the 98% fat free sign could be true on this one!

Recently picked up an ice-cream cake ordered by my wife. I was charged $55 for it, and my mistake was not to query it at the time (but I'd been in line for 20 mins and had to get my son's birthday organized).

Anyway, I realized later that they overcharged by $12 (charged me for a larger cake). I called the manager, DAN, many, many times (more than 10) to try to work out a refund (hey, I would even have taken store credit). But he kept evading and said the store owner had to approve it. BTW, Dan, what do you manage, since you're never in the store and can't approve a $12 correction?

If their credit card machine wasn't "broken" I would have disputed the charge.

So, caveat emptor, check your charges, check your change and keep your receipt.

We've just ordered another birthday cake from Mitchell's --- take that, Haight Street B&J!!

Took my "in laws" to H/A Ben and Jerry's thinking I was doing a good thing. Pops started to cry at the sight of Gap and B&J's in his childhood hometown. Gawd I had no idea he was a beatnik, hippie or whatever! He did not appreciate the offer of a waffle cone filled with Cherry Garcia so I ate it! Yummy. He also went nuts at the sight of one  long hair mid 50's guy wearing his Berks smoking a joint while using the ATM machine. Sorry I don't relate but it was funny all the same.

Everyone loves ice cream, and everyone loves Haight St.  However, the two don't always live in harmony!  The tiny scoops of ice cream at Ben and Jerry's cost almost $4?  Come on!  This is against everything the hippies stood for.  On top of that, I didn't have cash, and you can only use a card for purchases of more than $4.  So I had to buy a can of soda as well.  Walking around on Haight St carrying an open can of soda and trying to eat my little scoop of ice cream was not fun.  It would be nice if they had more indoor tables, and bigger scoops of ice cream please!!
