Just got 4 for 5 $1.50 tacos from this place, and the asada was pretty good. I want to try cecina next time, I heard it was very good from guys next to me in line. This place was filled with regulars, which seriously clues you in that the food is legit. I recommend this place to any street taco lovers! :D

I've been back to Belmar-La Gallinita a couple of times since my original review, and my experiences on these visits have been so positive that I'm upgrading to maximum stars.
On the first of these occasions, I didn't realize that I was walking in as they were closing. When I got to the counter and saw the butchers cleaning up, I panicked a little. The same nice man who is always there cheerfully told me not to worry and asked me what I wanted. On the spot, he seasoned up a few pounds of carne asada and sent me on my way.
Then, yesterday, after he rang up my purchase of salsa, beer, tortillas, and more of that tender, tasty carne asada, he told me to choose from several types of sausage and cut me off a 3-foot length, FREE.
I love it when nice men give me free sausage.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Its nice to be back....and I think its been a year.
My TB always knows the way to my heart.
Its a rainy day and what's the best way to wash it down...by having Mexican Birria for lunch and of course Carnitas Tacos....yumm!
TB doesnt drink soda, but he knows that I ike the Jarritos Mandarin so he got one for himself the Tamarind.
I dint have a camera, but by the looks of our plate and bowl....just like the rain...all have been washed down....then he said "this is wny I like you, we eat good together".
This place is a must-visit, it reminded me of Mexico, the food, the people and the service.
Hopefully, it will not take us another year before we come back.Listed in: TEDDYBEAR TIME

Frightening. Just frightening walking by here in the morning. You see, they are getting their meat delivered, and you can see the giant sides of beef being brought in. They don't handle their meat very gently, and it's pretty common to see it laying on the floor of the delivery truck, or perhaps being dragged a bit on the sidewalk.
Urgh.
Have I mentioned the rendering bins they take out of there?
Oh. My. God.
Frightening, I tell you. -

A friend recommended this market for good chorizo so I bought a pound yesterday and had it with scrambled eggs for breakfast today.
My partner and I enjoyed very much. The chorizo was very flavorful yet not greasy at all. I think we have found our source for good chorizo!
Now I'd like to try some of their prepared foods.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Tasty Meats and friendly service.. We had to make some Tacos for a Holiday gathering and this was a place that came highly recommended. We went in not knowing how much to order and the butcher that helped us let us know a good rule of thumb of a half pound of meat per person. And he also seasoned the meat for us. All you need to do is ask...
They also have a small little sit down area for people who want to order food to eat there and what they were serving both looked and smelled great!!! -

Keep it real and you won't fail, right?
Well, they do and the food shines although being slightly unsafe for your heart.
I guess that once in a while I can allow an extra dose of fried goodies (the chorizo/papas quesadilla rocks!).
I'll come here for my prescription and I'll make sure to have a comfy seat (go and see what I mean).
I already took an appointment for next month: suadero and cecina. -

Thank you, YELPERS (Wes M.)!! Ever since my buddy down in LA grilled me up some tasty carne asada, I've been on the lookout for a solid butcher in SF that cuts it up just right. The heavens opened up and sent me to La Gallinita today! It's down on a stretch of the Mission that I've, admittedly, never had much reason to venture down to, but rest assured I'll be quite familiar with it now.
I walked into the tiny store and immediately come across a large family having what appeared to be a spectacular lunch at a table in the middle of the store. I kept walking back and finally came across the meat counter manned by who I'm guessing was the owner - this older gent who couldn't have been more accommodating to my ignorant carne ways! He gave me some sliced carne asade seasoned with some s&p, garlic and paprika. I marinated it with some orange juice for a few hours and threw it on the grill. *Insanely* tasty; can't wait to go back for more!
Oh and of course, I stopped at the taco stand inside the 2nd room of the store. Smoke-filled with all sorts of tasty aromas. Not a lick of English spoken; just some gesturing and exchanging of cash. Ordered me up a spicy chorizo soft taco. The self-serve condiment stand is great; simple and no nonsense. I definitely got some stares and giggles, but whatever. Felt incredibly authentic and not the type of joint you'd see in any other part of town. I felt like a total tourist. -

I don't buy meat but I know of La Gallinita because my mom always saids "La Gallinita"! jaja
when I wanted to buy tacos she said, let's go to "La Gallinita" (Little Chicken). She directed my dad there and from the outside I said "No" because to me it didn't look like a "Taqueria"...well is not...really but they have a taco stand inside..
The tacos were delicious, I like the "Cecina taco" ...and I put a little lemon, cilantro and onion.
Then, one day I open the fridge and there was this delicious salsa! I could eat it all day with just a tortilla...
I said mom, where did you buy it...she said...
"La Gallinita"....
so..next time I'm going to buy some "Masa" to make fresh tortillas,Carne asada from La Gallinita, a soda "Jarritos", La gallinita salsa, and have a tasty meal with my date so he remembers those taco stands he tried while road trips in Mexico. -

Belmar's carne asada meat is the best I have cooked in the city. For those lazy Sunday barbecues when nothing-in-particular is going on, there's little better than getting corn tortillas, carne and a block of monterey jack and having a go at some tacos. The key ingredient is the carne and Belmar has it.
The ambiance of the place is great, it truly reminds me of Mexico in that people sit drinking coffee and enjoying food from the deli. The vibe is completely chill and the staff is great. -

I've never purchased meat here but I have to say that the tacos sold in the taqueria La Gallinita are probably the best I've ever had. Seriously, come for the cecina and stay for the cecina -- thinly sliced, perfectly salty-seasoned, prepared-to-order (not just reheated) beefy deliciousness. The chorizo is also excellent but seriously -- for me it's all about the cecina.
This is a no-frills place -- essentially a street taco stand in a little side section of the Belmar deli/store. There's seating for probably 6 people total if you don't mind cozying up to complete strangers. The salsas (red and green) are both excellent, and they have the standard selection of cilantro, diced onion, sliced radishes, and lime wedges for you to fix up your tacos just the way you like them. They've also got a small but decent selection of bottled sodas too, including Senorial Sangria, Mexican Coke, Sidral apple soda (go for the red, not the green!), and the like.
Note that they open for tacos at 7:00pm, so you'll be sorely disappointed if you arrive earlier. -

On the weekends don't miss Rico's tacos inside La Gallinita carniceria. Very underground feeling. I stopped by tonight - it was ridiculously packed and we were the only white people in there. Solid asada and suedero tacos grilled and served just like real Mexican street tacos - tenderly cooked meat slapped onto to a fresh tortilla, with a card table on the side filled with condiments (tomatillo and tomato salsa, cilantro, fresh chopped cebollas, radishes) so you can trick out your taco just as you like it. There are a couple of card tables up front with folding chairs usually filled with Mexican families eating dinner. And - they have Mexican Pepsi in the bottle. May not be the best tacos in SF, but cool and delicious nonetheless . Check it out!

While on a mission to gather some meat for a little bbq without the hassle of having to drive somewhere, my friend and I stumbled into La Gallinita. We were putting together a more classic gringo bbq, so we missed out on the carne asada and other delights the yelpers on here are raving about, but the T-bone steak, sausage, and marinated chicken wings were fresh and very tasty.... the prices were great, as well. Under $15 for all the meat. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I'll certainly be coming back for future bbq adventures...

I hate to downgrade Belmar, but I've been back 3 times since I wrote my original review and the carne asada has been very poor since. They don't marinate the meat anymore, rather toss some dry mixture of something onto the meat. It's greasy and tasteless, and I'll be looking for a new market, sadly.

Thanks to cha cha for taking me to La Gallinita. This little meat market is another of those hidden treasure of the mission area. I drive all the way here to get my fix of fresh pork, ribs, chicken, chiles, tomatillos, etc. Don't let the lack of frills scare you away. 4 lbs of assorted meat, vegetables, and all the other ingredients and I paid only $18. Salvadore will cut the meat exactly the way you want it and also trim most of the fat. Gracias Senior Salvadore! Can't wait to cook cha cha's chile ribs!

ginger already gave some props, but they deserve another 5.
1:18pm - praying i don't die on the bay bridge because well, being stuck on the bridge in traffic makes me loco.
1:20pm - uh oh la gallinita closes at 2pm.
1:21pm - Senor Gallinita (i will go back and reintroduce myself and get your name and thank you again) himself takes my order and says don't fret, i'll leave it with my son who's manning the taqueria today with your name to pick up whenever.
1:38pm - somehow made it before they closed. was thoroughly embarrassed when i met the lovely man on the other end of the receiver who took my frantic call (because yes, it was going to be the end of the world if i didn't get my carne asada.) got it and treated myself to some delicious chicharrones to pat myself on the back as i cheerily skipped home. -

This review is only for the taco operation they have set up on the side door-- not the butcher or market.
I've been going to La Gallinita Tacos since 2006. For the longest time they had just one young guy working a grill and everything was kept raw or near-raw and grilled to order. Since 2008 they have switched to keeping cooked or nearly cooked meat in large containers around the grill and more or less warming it up before giving it to you. Now I don't have to tell anyone who has worked a grill before that this isn't a good idea, it may save time but you lose flavor BIGTIME and the meat that comes out tastes like stew meat, not taco meat. :(
I went back twice after the new setup and haven't returned, because the quality that I knew and loved just wasn't there anymore. I'd have given them 4 stars at their old level of quality-- the cecina was formerly DIVINE.
The drink selection is good (they have genuine sugar-based Mexican Coca-Cola) and the fixings include cucumbers, some decent salsas and plenty of limes in a bar where you can take what you want. The seating situation is often poor, as there weren't many seats and they are often taken. -

Now here's a place that your typical SF techno-yuppie would never walk into if it wasn't for Yelp. As this is one of many latin food shops on 24th St, you can make a great grocery run in this neighborhood. This place is where you get (surprise!) your meat. I came here to try the chicharrones, which are (more or less) fried pork skins. Mmm-mmm good! Eat them as snacks or chop them up and put them in tacos.

I've never actually gotten food from here, but we did a photo shoot outside awhile back and well the man who owns this joint is just really nice. I would recommend everyone to go here just based on that. I hear they have great tacos.

i've never bought meat from this carniceria but the tiny taco stand inside - basically, one guy manning a griddle - is awesome! we stopped by for a quick snack of simple, yet delicious suadero tacos, which i've never had before and is flank/hangar steak according to google. they also have cecina, which is dried beef - planning to try this next time. next to the griddle is a little table of salsas and fixings for you to load onto your taco....
fyi, the meat choices here are beef-heavy, with only chorizo and chicken as the non-beef options, so if you're anti-beef, might want to go elsewhere. -

Amazing tacos (the chorizo and carne asada are phenomenal), cheap prices, friendly service, and a good selection of meat for you to take home. Could it get any better than this?

Friendly AND tasty. We were going to be a few minutes late on a Sunday after the butcher closed but he offered to leave it at the front desk taqueria for us anyway. They were very nice and the meet may as well have been grilled angels. so good.

Grandma is cooking. Best mexican food in SF (except for Papalote). The food is fresh and authentic. It is inside a meat market, so everything meaty is right of the hoof. Pozole, menudo, sopa de albondigas A+.
Fresh handmade tortillas, Birria (goat stew) and my amazing chicharron.
This is the palace of meat, so if you are a vegetarian...you are not welcome. -

This place is great!! The owner is extremely welcoming and very helpful. The Menudo and the Pozole are to die for...but it is better if you take it to go because it can get kinda crowded. You must also try the taco stand they have next door. The cecina tacos are extremely good. You can also buy cecina by the pound which is great and it cooks very quickly.

Top of the line taqueria attached to the La Gallinita Meat Market. My favorite taco meat, suadero, is featured here and they do it very well. Highly recommended.
