Wow, what a beautiful scene a Bellows. We came out here today to take a little hike around the trail and had a great time. The trail leads you around the beach park and through the woods. It is mostly paved with the exception of the piece of trail that goes through the woods.
We had our 11 month old in the hiking backpack carrier and our 3 year old in a jogging stroller. (she walked a bit but we wanted to bring the stroller just in case) It was slightly challenging getting the stroller w/kid through some patches of sand throughout the woods but I needed to exert myself a bit...after all it is a "hike".
When we finished our hike we came out towards the ocean and it was amazing! The water was crystal. pale blue and the sand looked super soft. The waves were quite choppy however so today would not have been a day for swimming for the kiddos if we had brought our suits.
Went to Bellows with my two kiddies, my two nephews and my mom. Got to the beach and saw there was a posting for man-o-war (jellyfish). Bummers!!! We drove 40 minutes from town. Oh man! My mom assures me it'll be fine.
Me: "Hey kids just stay on the beach and play in the sand."
Kids: "Okay!" (Nodding heads in unison while running towards the water)
Me: "Hey kids stay on the sand okay?!"
Kids: "Okay!" (While running away from waves on the beach and completely ignoring me)
Me: "Hey kids maybe you should come away from the water?!"
My Daughter: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
So within 2 minutes of getting to the beach we have to leave because of jellyfish. Thankfully the lifeguard has spray to lessen the stinging but the cry of my daughter (which can be heard for a good five miles) will not be alleviated by any type of spray known to man. I told my daughter she's been initiated to the club and that only produced more screaming. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

geez, i am honored to be the second to review bellows. I have not been here since 2000. but initially i wanted to write a review because i was feeling nostalgic.
when i was a child in the 70's and 80's in hawaii as a military brat, this is where the annual navy summer picnic was held.
EVERY YEAR!! i was stung by a jellyfish. the pine needles from the lame surrounding trees are a pain in the ass too. the last year of the navy company picnic that our family attended, i did not go into the water, i did other stuff. Walking along the shore, i picked up some kelp and seaweed that wrapped itself around my arm, which had a jellyfish tangled in it, and i was stung again!!
my father threatened peeing on me.
i also remember being swirled like a piece of dirty laundry in the waves.
i was seven though.
years later i visited with my old bf, and i refused to enter the water. sure enough, he was stung on his leg.
still, these are amongst the greatest memories of my 32 years of life.

I think this is my favorite spot on earth. Seriously. I try to get here as often as possible. I love when we're driving onto the base the first day of our trip and rounding that curve, getting the first glimpse of the ocean....the color is such a beautiful turquoise above the fine white sand....it takes my breath away every time!
I love how peaceful and uncrowded the beach is during the weekdays. (Weekends are very different when half the beach is open to the public). I feel very lucky to have access to Bellows. For all military families...I HIGHLY recommend this place. The cabins are small but nice enough, especially the renovated ones. They are fully furnished. We use the grill a lot and eat our meals outside on the picnic table looking out on the ocean.
There's a shopette, gas station, miniature golf, driving range, activities center, and much more. We've gone kayaking and boogy boarding here. Watch out for the jelly fish. If you see a lot of them washed up on the beach (look for small clear blobs w/ blue tails) you might not want to get in the water. I've been here a dozen times and knock wood....have never been stung.
While you're here, check out Keneke's plate lunch for good cheap eats and shave ice.
As we drove in, there were bungalows for military families to lease, dotting the shoreline, with woody areas providing shade. My relatives explained this was more like a recreational area for the military, as I noticed putt-putt golf behind a driving range, tons of volleyball nets, tennis courts, and other outdoor stations. Lots of people were camping in tents and there was a gas station, café, laundry mat, Subway & PX for last minute items forgotten.
Once we made it through the woods, I was giddy from the site of the endless beach. The sand was so refined, it felt like I was walking/running over something powdery as opposed to tiny grains. The ocean was so crystal clear, you could be standing in 5 ft of water and see straight down to the ocean floor. And if you knew what to look for, the waves were perfect for body boarding. We pitched a canopy near the edge of the wooded picnic areas to take advantage of the tables and cooling shade. Between beer & BBQ runs on shore, I probably spent 85% of my time in the water. I'm a pieces--of course I LOVE water!
There were a host of other activities that you could participate in for a modest fee like kayaking, paintball, snorkeling, surfing, and historic tours. You could make an appointment for a massage, if you really wanted to 'hang loose'.
Bellow Fields Beach Park has a section strictly for military. And when I say strictly, I don't mean that leisurely. Within 20 mins of arrival in the military designated section, I watched MPs handcuff 2 young women for trespassing on protected govt land. They do not play out here.
Lifeguards were posted to tend to man-o-war stings & patrol the deeper waters on jet skis. My Uncle got stung and the lifeguard sprayed him with vinegar from a spray bottle, but said warm water over the area would also help.
I can't think of another place I would rather be. Sparkling warm ocean, clean beach, controlled access, additional amenities--I am slipping into a beach coma just thinking about it again.....I absolutely loved it.

One of my favorite beaches on Oahu, because it's so close to Honolulu and so often nearly deserted. Just down the road from Waimanalo Beach Park, and much less crowded.
Never been stung by a jellyfish here, but I'll agree with the other reviewer that the Casuarina (ironwood) cones which litter the ground are a pain.
You can stop at nearby Keneke's Plate Lunch for authentic local plate lunches (bring your appetite). Not a big fan of their shave ice, though.
my one of favorite beach of all time....all time!
ok so im going to do this review a little different.
this beach is for military families only. those who have access are lucky. many beaches in hawaii are over saturated, crowded by tourists. this is in complete contrast. i've been to Bellows numerous times-every other year for the past 8 years (just about).
- you have privacy, the ultimate relaxation and vacation.
- you get a little cabin on the beach surrounded by trees. literally on the beach! you can wake up and hit the beach, noooo problem!!
- you not only do have a kitchen, clean bathrooms in this cabin, but outside electrical outlets for plugging the radio, or extra stove.
- the campgrounds has a little market for the necessities, so you dont have to leave.
- you can camp outside, talk story all night
- there are activities around the grounds...i hit up the golfing range...imagine your long shot against the hawaiian mountains..
so peoples, if you can get access try it here. nothing beats this place!
