Been past Bella's many times, first visit lunch today. What was I thinking? Putnam does not have a restaurant to compete with Bella's. The service could not have been better. Had an Italian beer. The specials all sounded so good it was tough to decide. One in our party of three had the calamari off the menu, a huge plate with delicious sauce on the side and a salad. One had the large shrimp in a sweet yet spicy sauce, fabulous and plentiful. I had the prime rib sandwich, turned out to be open-faced,  about an eight inch square with delicious cheese browned on top. So good. Now, when I visit my parents in Putnam, I only want to go to Bella's for lunch!!!

Classic Italian upscale restaurant. I've dined at Bella's a few times, but most recently was rather impressed. Food is fresh and flavorful. As I scanned the menu, one appetizer caught my eye that I just could not pass up:

Fried Gingerbread Encrusted Pumpkin Ravioli: topped with a cinnamon cream sauce with walnuts, spinach and shallots, garnished with boursin cheese.

    What!

Oh yes. It delivered. I really admire these kinds of creative new takes. But if you are looking for classic Italian dishes, they have plenty of that too.

Bella's really has that old world charm. It would not be impossible to forget that you are in Putnam, seated at one of those tables draped in white, with a glass of Stella in your hand.

Try this one out, folks. Guaranteed not to disappoint.

Slow Service, Weak drinks, great food.

We had the opportunity to get in to town and have dinner at Bella's.  We opted to hit the new Martini Bar located downstairs.  We have enjoyed dinner upstairs a few times, so we were excited to see what the new addition had in store.  We made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday night.

Upon arriving, I was disappointed on the journey down the stairs  The brightly lit fluorescent stairway was not all that inviting to what is supposed to be a chic little Martini bar.  I will give Bella's the benefit of the doubt that they have very little (to no) control over  this through way.

Once inside, the setting was much better, however, the service was extremely slow.  It took what seemed like 10 minutes for someone to come over to greet us to take our drink order.  Now keep in mind, we are not impatient people.  I don't really complain about things moving at a leisurely pace.  So, for this to seem like 10 minutes...could very well have been 20.  Drinks came, Sangria was VERY large, and delicious.  My hubby had a vodka and cranberry, which was very light on the cranberry.  He had to ask that they make it a little stronger a couple times.  By the 5th one, he had given up hope.

Dinner is the ONLY reason I gave this 3 stars.  The Veal Marsala was awesome! My friend had the bottomless pit of spaghetti and meatballs, and hubby had Tammy & The Hughes Sirloin Aragosta Fra Diavolo.  All were delicious!

This: Slow Service, Weak drinks, great food.

    I am a local-walking distance.

Positives: Overall Bella's is great. The food is great, the service is great and the owners are friendly. The gelato is good too. The food is always fresh and you can order a pizza and other meals to go when you dont want to deal with the crowds and nightmare of parking on a weekend. Although there is  a lot of parking at the DMV parking lot on Kennedy drive, but many people don't want/are not able to walk up the hill to get to Main Street. They now have a kids menu, which is great becasue there are many "tourist" that come to Putnam with kids and Putnam is a very kid-friendly town.

Negatives:The food takes a while(but this can also be a good thing because you know that it isn't frozen garbage. Also it is a bit pricey.

Amazingly tasty Italian cuisine featuring incredible sauces and lots of fresh seafood.  A must visit, the kind of place cooking magazines will eventually discover and highlight.

The depth and richness of the well-spiced sauces and sides is far beyond what one might have expected in this off-the-path CT town.  Our servers explained that all the sauces are made with fresh ingredients -- tomatoes, peppers, herbs, etc -- and made fresh each day.  The pizzas come fresh daily from a local baker nearby, with some tasty and unique special dry rub baked into the thin crust.

The menu changes monthly, and we were lucky to have fresh clams, lots of lobster and sea bass last night.  The fried chicken liver was not available for us, but everyone raves about it.

They have 10-12 tables out front on the street, which makes for a wonderful evening as the summer sun sets and the darkness falls over tree lighted with tiny bulbs.

Our servers were great, truly energentic and fired up about the good food being served.

Bring your own wine, or call ahead and they'll have a nearby liquor store deliver your order before you arrive.

Just an update to my prior review: Bella's has now turned into more of an upscale Italian restaurant and is still as tasty as ever.  I recommend the grilled pizzas: full of delicious toppings and excellently prepared!
