My hair has never cooperated much with me and I have always had trouble finding a barber, salon or chop shop who could give me something that works well, until I came here. Every place I've gone to before either gave me one of their 3 hair styles they know or went too creative with the faux hawk, which is something I clearly didn't want.
I went to Ballarmine Salon on a personal recommendation from Jakob H. Michael was my stylist and he instantly had ideas for my hair. Twenty minutes later I had a style that nobody had tried before and really worked for my head and face.
I really don't like to think about my hair, so I'm happy now that I don't have to.

Bellarmine was my first foray in a long while into hair salons. Somewhere along the line, I accepted that I didn't know a thing about hair. Clearly, a salon must have a clue. And since it was Santana Row, they must know even more! I mean, you can't get much more hipper and/or trendier than alongside the likes of Gucci etc.
As a guy, there's not much "styling" you can do with hair. Especially if you're like me and slowly losing it all. The best you can do is get a style that compliments the lack of hair. No stylist has said "let's shave it off" yet, although I do always put that out there as an option. I mean, hey, if it'd look good, right? So anyway, I met with Michael and have been seeing him about every 4-6 weeks or so, sometimes a bit longer in between.
The work he does is pretty good, and he suggested I grow out my sideburns. Having usually shaved them off, I trusted his judgement for the better. He gives a good haircut, with a bit of texturing along the sides. It's a small touch that he does, but a little bit of wax makes it stand out. I don't mind putting that little bit of effort in for that extra touch.
$40-$45 nets you a shampoo, cut, and rinse. There's always music playing when I've been in there, and occasionally some dancing. It's a nice place, and it's tucked just off the main row, giving you plenty of chances to both people watch and be seen.
It's an okay place overall, and I definitely trust them with my (limited) hair. They've got people 7 days a week, and when I've been unable to see Michael (on a Mon or Tues) I've been able to see someone else for a touchup. They're all good at what they do, and I definitely like coming here.
I got an updo and they charged me $85....
the price was pretty steep but it ended up very nice, not really what I asked for tho...
the lady who did my hair, I think was hanah. she was really sweet.
I would have given them 4 stars but the receptionist was so rude! She has such an attitude, it made me really uncomfortable.
I think she really ruined the whole visit, I just left feeling really iffy :/
I won't be coming back here.
Sigh. Why do I always get screwed? ugh...Got an appointment for same day, that was cool. Stylist, Hanan, was right on time. She was friendly too. However I was pretty disappointed with the whole shampoo and blowdry. She said I have beautiful hair, but didn't work with it and was actually really rough. She didn't use enough conditioner even after I told her to and was tugging at knots! Ouch. I asked her not to use hairspray since I like to be able to run my fingers through it or comb it... She pulled my hair so hard I was afraid it would come right out of my roots. She did use this redken product on my wet hair which was OK.
She said my appt. would last 45 minutes. About 30 minutes into it another client shows up, she tells him 5 more minutes. She then starts rushing through my hair blowdrying in awkward directions of course causing baby hairs to frizz.
She finished the right side of my head, but not the left. She then sprayed shine serum which just made my hair look oily. I walked out $55 less, half head still damp, and the thought of rushing home to wash it out and do it myself in time for the party.
Couldn't recommend this place.

I use to work in Santana Row and on my breaks I would walk by Bellarmine Salon and look at all the aewsome cuts everyone was getting. So I decided to try the place out my self. Everyone was super friendly and I loved it there.
My frist sylest I got was really good but I decided not to go back to her cuz I wanted something different.
I schedualed with Jessica and let me just tell you she is amazing!
My hair looked so awesome and I loved what she did with it. She got my style just right and I couldn't ask for anything better.
This is a must go place. Just a call and talk to them and tell them what you want, Vince can match you with right person and you will come out looking like a rockstart and loving your hair!
Tanks again Jessica!!
P.S. I have to say the pricing is moderat for such a high-end salon. Its worth it!

Ok as a guy, I don't mind spending extra money to get a nice sharp, well styled cut, but if you can't trim the back of my head straight when I spend $65 + tip on just a men's cut, you don't make the grade.
They trim my hair and do a fair job trying to pamper me with the works and wash, but when they show me the back of my head in the mirror there's a clear and obvious notch in my hair! When I explain that there's a 1/2" patch that's cut shorter then the rest of my hair in the back, they try to defend themselves by going "oh that's just how your hair is". What a ridiculous excuse! Even cheap $10 barbers can get that right.
The first time that I went to Bellarmine Salon, I left crying. The lady asked me what I wanted and the end result was nowhere close to what I had expected. She cut my bangs too short and proceeded to bobby-pin them to hide the mistakes. She also went overboard with the curling iron at the end and when I went home to wash my hair, I realized that the cut was very uneven.
I had purchased a package deal that they were promoting on our college campus and was stuck with another cut, color, and oil treatment. Because of my bad first experience with them, I took some time asking some of my friends for stylist recommendations. Most of them said to go with Hanan so I made an appointment with her. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she did just that. I also had my hair dyed in a deep plum color and added red highlights. If Hanan hadn't done a decent job to my hair, I don't think I would ever want to go back. Make sure to ask some of your friends whom they recommend!
***IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SALON THAT ALWAYS DOES GOOD HAIR, THIS IS IT*** I spent many years looking for a good stylist...literally. My friend finally recommended this place and I found dun dun dun...MICHAEL!!! He is the best for color, but also gives me a great cut and style. All the stylists are actually really good, I've had a few of them when Michael was too busy. All their customers walk out super happy and looking absolutely fabulous. A lot of guys go here to get their haircut as well (so if your a guy, this place is also great)! The stylists here also do a variety of unique updos as well so if you are looking to have your hair done for: prom, wedding or even a fun night out in the town...come HERE. Prices are not too bad: cut, style and color for long and thick hair amounted to $150. A difficult and time consuming updo is about $50 but less for a simple updo. Note: if you get lost in Santana Row looking for the salon, the place is next to Urban Outfitters across from Maggiano's Restaurant.
My friend and I ventured in here one day just to get out bangs trimmed. First off, the receptionist at the front desk was very rude and didn't even acknowledge us standing there for a good couple minutes. After they trimmed our bangs the lady who did mine told me that it was 10 dollars and I can pay up front. But when the other stylist was done trimming my friends bangs she told her that she didn't charge for bang trims. So basically, we both walked in and got the same service, yet I was the only one that had to pay. I asked the receptionist why I had to pay for the bang trim even though my friend didn't and she said something stupid along the lines of how it's their policy and it's up to the stylist if they charge or not. I understand how at a lot of places stylists will often give bang trims for free to their regular customers. However, their "policy" is just stupid. Why the hell am I paying for something that someone else just got for free. That is terrible customer service. And to top it all off, after I made it clear to the receptionist that I was unhappy about this she said, "It's just 10 dollars". Well...they "just" lost a customer.
Nice little salon in Santana Row. What makes this salon perfect? - Hollyjean and Ty - "nicest" and "friendlist person" has a picture of Hollyjean on the dictionary. Ty is a great hair stylist and will make your hair cutting experience sublime.
I have had a bad experience with some of the other hair stylists (or least one other - the chubby dude who thinks he's better than everyone else) - but it should not stop you from experiencing this terrific place.
Michael is awesome over here. Every time he cuts my boyfriend's hair, it looks soooo good. I can't even begin to explain how much I like what he does to it. No one has ever cut his hair better. He cuts and styles his hair perfectly. Michael cut my hair once, and it looked great too!! Till this day, my boyfriend says it was his favorite hair cut of mine, but I can't leave my regular stylist!
I recommend him to anyone...male or female.
I decided to get a haircut and highlights on a whim one day while shopping at Santana Row. The W was booked, so I decided to try this place. My stylist was Hanan. I told her I wanted a simple cut, side swept bangs and red highlights and lowlights in my hair. I went through and picked the shades I wanted - simple enough right? Apparently not. The haircut was just average. Nothing good. Nothing bad. Just average. Absolutely NOT worth the $65 I paid for it. But let me tell you about the highlights - she had to redo them 4 (yes 4) times. Because each time they kept turning out orange. (she said it looked red even though everyone else said it was orange). then bronze. (she said it looked red even though everyone else said it was bronze).then bronzy orange. (at this point 3 hours has gone by and I've missed my dinner plans- a lady sitting next to me also getting highlights literally said "NO way do I want my highlights to hers" (pointing to me)) then orangey bronze. WTF? I even had to say - look. My scalp is killing me so you better get this right - I want it to look exactly like his highlights (pointing to owner of salon). Needless to says about 4 hours later she finally got my highlights to match my poor scalp - a nice shade of red. But alas - where were the lowlights? They were there apparently, but you couldn't see them. So she gave me a "discount."
Anyway. Off I went. Not too happy but fine with my hair. One week later, I look in the mirror and guess what? The red was stripped and my hair was a nice shade of ORANGE. Anyway, I was going back to Santana for dinner that night so I stopped by the salon and spoke with the owner who agreed to refund me the money for my highlights the next day. I waited one day. I waited two days. Nothing. Frustrated yet again, I called back and FINALLY got them to give me my damn money back.
I am NEVER going back to this salon ever again.

Small place for good cuts.I liked my hair cut very much.Michael is very good.My friend who has been getting his hair cut here for ages now from Michael always looks good and his hair really suits him.Michael did something different with my hair too but he is very patient if there is anything particular that you want.My friend has short hair and even me.So i guess Michael is good with short hair.Cant say much about long hair. The place is a little small but the cuts are good. Its hard to get a quick appointment so keep a buffer of 2-3 days.
Havent tried hair color in this salon. Will be trying it soon.Shall update the review on that as well.
Until then, anybody who wants a cut and is thinking about going to this place, well, take my word and go for it.
The good - the stylist, Hannan is great. She never rushes. She listens and she does what you ask. Santana Row is a great place to go.
The bad - the salon is tiny. The seats in the waiting room are like sitting in a space capsule. Some of the stylist have a little too much drama in their life.
Love this place, simple. elegant, and up to par with Europe. :-) Definetly will be back.
my bf got a haircut there and came out with a flat top. Supercuts does a better job!

A lot less expensive than W Salon across the street and you walk out with a great cut or color. The stylists are a pretty eclectic crew but sometimes have too much drama to cry about. My friend has gone to Hanan a few times and loves her. Her highlights always come out great and she has really thick hair and knows how to work with it. I've gone to Ernie a few times but each time has gotten to be an unpleasant experience. He does a great job with my hair, but always seems so unhappy. Since the salon is small, I just don't feel right about switching stylists, so I'm afraid I probably won't go back again.

I don't get hair cuts often, but when I do.. I tend to be very picky about where I go (yes, I've had horrible haircuts before and that has made me very weary about where I go now). I was given the choice of 2 salons, Bellarmine and Umbrella. I should have gone to Umbrella. Michael, I believe that's what his name is (some asian guy), cut my hair. Honestly, he was watching America's Next Top Model more than he was my hair! He barely talks to you and when he started combing my hair, JEEZ! It felt as if he was trying to comb out my scalp. Also, he doesn't pay attention and tries to comb off my ears as well. My sister got her hair cut right after mine and he totally rushed through her cut. I would NOT go back to this place. EVER.

I've been to Bellarmine 3 times in 3 years. Even though it's pretty mediocre, I keep coming back because it's a convenient location and Hanan works Sundays. The price doesn't really do my laziness justice, though. Last time, I paid $300 for cut, color, and partial highlights. :x If I spend that much, I should probably be happy, huh? Oups.
For the quality of the cut and color, I would not expect these ridiculous prices. I was not impressed enough to return. The place is small and cramped.

Good prices, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good music and most of all, a decent hair cut. I have been to see Hanan two times now and have not been disappointed.

Everyone seems to be talking about a girl named Jessica. I'm sure she's awesome because the Salon itself is, but let me tell you about a man named Gustavo! He is the reason my sister and I moved from W Salon (Where he formally worked) to Bellarmine Salon (Although I wish it wasn't named Bellarmined only because I went to Bellarmine HS's rival)! He starts off by taking in what you have to say and what you think you need, but he is very real and when I say that I mean it, he will tel you what he really thinks of your hair and what he thinks of the style you want. If you are so set of the style you want he will tell you ideas that will go great with it and will work with what you give him. He has the hands of an angel when he is doing the shampoo/conditioner. He works through your hair massaging it and trust me, it feels sooooo good! Afterwards he takes you to your chair and you don't get bored because he is also a great guy to talk with! he spends a good amount of time on the detail he wants to put into your hair even if you won't notice or you think others won't, they will. My hair has come out spectacular and healthy every time! Also! I've noticed my hair has been growing faster since I've been going to Gustavo since August of 2007 !

I've been to Bellarmine twice now, once over two years ago, and again, just a couple days ago. Two summers ago, I wanted to get my hair cut before my boyfriend and I went to San Diego. I went to Sassy in Cupertino (big mistake). The lady that cut my hair talked and talked and talked and talked. Her hands were flying and it didn't look like she had any logical method of cutting my hair. Well, it turns out the tapered look around my face that I wanted had a big chunk missing out of it. I completed panicked. I wore my hair in a ponytail with a million clips to keep my hair up for the rest of the day while I frantically called all the hair salons within a 10-mile radius. All the shops were either closed, were booked or didn't have openings for 3-4 days. Nooo! I called Bellarmine in a frenzy and they said they could take me the next day. YES! I went in and from the moment I stepped into the salon to the first cut the girl made in my hair, I didn't stop talking, I was so nervous. The girl who cut my hair, Jenna, was awesome! She listened, was sympathetic and totally calmed my fears. She told me like it was...to make my hair look good, I had to lose all my length and get an above the shoulder cut. I believe she said "bob-ish" and then saw my face go pale and my jaw drop, and she quickly took it back. Not a bob, but a cute shapely, one length hair cut. Okay...what did I have to lose at this point? She kept me calm throughout the cut and talked enough, but not too much. Both being Filipino, she asked, "did a white girl cut your hair?" and I said, "yes", and she just shook her head. Haha, it was a pretty funny moment, actually. In the end, I loved the cut, and loved Jenna in return. All I had to do was wash and towel dry my hair and every time it looked perfect. All that summer and into the fall and winter, a blow dryer never got close to my hair and it always looked amazing.
Fast forward to a few days ago. I've been terrified to get my hair cut ever since. Yes, it was 2+ years of no hair cuts. So, at this point, my hair is all one length and looooong. So long, when I pull my hair back, it feels really heavy and I think it gives me headaches. I decided to give Bellarmine another try and oh.my.god, Jenna's gone. *sigh* Okay, I was brave and went in and ended up having Melissa cut my hair. I told her about my horrific past and she suggested just some overall layers to take off the weight, but I could keep the length. In about 25 minutes, the cut was done and it was perfect. She spent another 20 minutes blow drying my hair (something my hair is definitely not used to since I'm L-A-Z-Y), and it looked AMAZING.
My experience at Bellarmine is definitely 5 star. I never had a problem getting an appointment, everyone is very friendly and my wash, cut and dry was $65 both times. Perhaps $55 the first time actually. Go, you won't be disappointed!
My boyfriend turned me onto a real salon-style haircut, and I've never gone back. The salon is small, but really nice and well-run. And I have to rave about my favorite stylist, Stacey! She's the absolute best! The staff there is really nice and both Hanan and Ty cut hair wonderfully as well. They are always having a good time and you'll enjoy yourself. Treat yourself to a great hair experience!
All I have to say is..I love Laura!! I can't speak of the other stylists..but Laura is amazing!
I use to love this place. The best stylist was Tommy unfortunately he is no longer working there. They would not tell me where he moved. I tried other stylist there and I have basically moved on found cheaper places that do better jobs.
As the queen of salon-hopping, my search for the eternal fabulous stylist has taken me everywhere from Arizona to San Diego to San Francisco. I have seen everything from over top stylists to the ma and pop shop that produces Oribe quality work. Without a doubt, this salon rated as my absolute worst experience ever. I spent a year growing my hair long and went in to simply have an inch cut off and a few layers added - ala no "Rachel cut". I came out with a freaky, modern, "heart shaped" haircut that I will now spend the next year growing out . I saw someone named Tommy who didn't speak a word to me the entire time except to make some perverted comment about Victoria's Secret underwear to me.
This guy got out the flat iron and scortched my hair while wet for an hour - Steam was rolling off of my head and my ends look like they need another trim already. FRIED. I had no idea there was an additional $45 fee for flat ironing, but apparently they charge you for services you don't even agree to or asked if you want. Sketchy. The worst part is he took out the thinning shears and went to town. I have never asked for my long hair to be thinned, and the guy butchered me. My hair was so thin I needed Rogaine...and the worst is that he thinned the bottom half of my hair so I have what looks like the formation of a mullet because the hanging 4 inches are so over-thinned. Yes ladies, I got "mullet-fied". It is the ugliest, worst, and most horrific haircut I've ever gotten and the guy didn't listen to me at all. He also insulted me by saying my old style wasn't "trendy" and I needed to be more "hip". You could say he made me look like employee of the month at a bowling alley in the darkest corner of the midwest somewhere. All I needed was the used white shoes and a polyester vest and I'd look like employee of the month.
I don't recommend this salon to anyone. The service is terrible and the staff is unprofessional. They all sit on the bench out front, chain smoke, and stare at you while you get mullet-fied. Over-priced, over-rated, and just over it...
