Review from Jenna M.
My mom was in town for a visit and wanted to see the new George Clooney movie, because she is a woman over 30, and that's what they want to do! (I kid, I kid. Clooney has universal appeal. Also, I wanted to see it because of Ryan Gosling. Generational gaps are funny!) We had other plans on the Upper East Side, so I found this theater on my phone and we made our way over. What a strange place! It doesn't look like a movie theater at all, and only has two screens -- in this case, it was showing the Clooney film on both. (There are a lot of women on the UES over 30.)
We got our tickets at the box office and thankfully weren't more than ten minutes early, because apparently you are only admitted into the lobby at fifteen minutes prior to your show's start time. That's a little strange, and it was really cold outside, so I'm glad we like to cut things close. Anyway, after winding our way through the maze of stairs and escalators to get down to the screens, we found ourselves in a nearly-empty theater. Everything was really clean and comfortable, and I thought the sound quality was great -- although several scratches on the screen danced their way through the film and distracted me at times.
The ticket prices here were on par with other commercial theaters in Manhattan -- which is to say, unreal -- and I fell for the concession guy's upsell to a bucket of soda, which made me feel like a sucker. But overall, it was a really nice way to spend a weekday evening. -

Great experience. Despite what the other poster said, this was one of the cleanest movie theatres I've ever been to. While it doesn't possess the old time aesthetic of its sister theatre on the west side, The Paris, the Beekman still has a retro feel to it because it's a movie theatre whose sole purpose is to show movies - not entertain kids with an arcade, or feed you dinner from the concesion stand, etc.

This little theatre is a hidden gem on the upper east side. No tacky lightbulb lined posters displaying the *latest and greatest* from hollywood. I've walked past it a million times and never new it was a movie theater. Recently, I wanted to see Food Inc., the new exposé documentary about the U.S. food industry and found it to only be playing in two theaters in Manhattan: The Film Forum and Beekman, only 5 minutes away from where I live! Good to know the UES has some redeeming qualities.
They only play two movies at a time but their selection is top notch. Seats are a little cramped (I'm not tall but my legs were not comfortable)but due to the selection of movies, the audience is mature and respectful. No annoying kids throwing popcorn at the screen here.
According to their website, students with valid IDs get tickets for $8. Too bad we didn't know about that beforehand.
