Review from Sonny K.
Los Angeles, CA
In over 15 years of surfing I've never been to a better surf shop than this one. The quality of James Wheatley's boards are as good as any out there and the customer service deserves more than 5 stars. I tore a hole in my wetsuit so I brought it in for repair, and then a few months later I cracked a fin on my short board and brought that in to have it fixed. Both times Bobby and Steve hooked me up with loaners and excellent deals. This is a TRUE surf shop where the staff really knows what they're doing. Looking forward to getting more Becker boards soon.

Service here is terrible! A girl was too busy texting to ring us up and was even texting on the way to reluctantly ring us up. Not once BUT twice they almost walked in on me in the changing room. Isn't that why there's the thing hanging on the outside? And you are supposed to KNOCK first! Got some great board shorts & they do have some great stuff but I'm reluctant to return because of the service I have received the last two times I have gone.
First time was even worse but I won't get into it. Girls, just be nice. I don't bite. Promise. -

Becker's used to be a local owned shop with cheaper, decent surfboards.
Now, Becker's is owned by Billabong.
The store staff doesn't seem to know much about surfboards and isn't that helpful.
The surfboards aren't cheap anymore and have poor resale value (you can verify this any day on craigslist). I've owned Becker surfboards and they are just average quality.
The prices are a bit high and they don't have sales often. Others stores will at least price match (ET surf) but Becker's is full price almost all the time.
Wetsuit selection is below average. -

I have been coming here for years.
Becker has a huge selection of pretty much anything a surfer needs.
They have clothing, shoes, flip-flops, skateboards, skim board, surfboards, paddle-boards, sunglasses, hats, jackets, backpacks, watches, stickers, wallets etc for both Men & Women....(you catch the idea).
Becker is located on Pier a couple of blocks away from the Ocean. The store itself it huge. The staff is always friendly and willing to help with what ever need you might have.
They used to have a killer base-coat wax but just found out the guy who made that moved to Oregon so if you happen to read this how can we still get that base-coat?
Lots of street parking. As long as you are not going to Becker on the 4th of July you will not have a problem finding a space to pull into.
As a surfer walking into a surf shop you know where to go and how to get it. You know what you are looking for and do not need help with sizes and all that Nordstorm jazz. So please do not dis the staff here because they are great and do a fantastic job dealing with the KOOKS who walk in 1,000 times a day.
Cheers STAY COOL BECKER.
FYI Becker also makes some incredible boards just out of my price range. -

Ridiculous surf shop. Other than one gentleman who seemed to actually know what he was doing, service is terrible. Came here looking to buy board shorts, a leash and some other supplies, left buying nothing due to the ineptitude of the staff. Whoever manages this place better right the ship or your competition will take you out.

Went into the store to see if it'd be a bit different from the online ordering experience. Walked around the surfboard section for several minutes, not a single person ever approached me to talk about the boards... No problem. No sale from me coming in now...
I saw another older guy who was coming in to pick up his board. He was PISSED. He had picked out the shape/color/etc all out... The dimensions were all set up to what looked ok for him... the color was way off. Again the mass amounts of orders coming through must be mixing them up so that they can't even do things correctly. The employee immediately tried to cover it saying that the shaper offered to waive the color charge of $70... That means a couple possible things... They mess up on things like that, and the charge waiver has to happen all the time... Or the shaper and the store knew they messed up and didn't do anything to try and fix it ahead of time.
Instead they let the guy sit there stressing out. Hopefully he didn't feel obligated to take the board.Listed in: Pray for surf...., Please don't go here...

LOVE THIS PLACE! I PRAISE James Wheatley, who works there. He shaped my new board, which is freaking AMAZING and everything I asked for in a board. A 5'10 performance fish. SO helpful every step of the way and completely attentive to what I wanted. Yay!
Everyone is so friendly, and wiling to help. They made me do a cartwheel in a wetsuit i was thinking of buying. Always a good time in there. -

I really like Becker. Look, if you're walking in a surf shop in Southern California and you're not a surfer dude, you're probably going to feel out of place automatically. Get over yourself because the dudes at Becker are nice and helpful.
This is what a real surf shop looks and feels like. Spyder is a little bit too "gnar-gnar" for me, like they wear too much black ala LA Raiders gear circa 1992. And Jack's is just a jerkstore. -

This place has the cutest dresses, tops and bathing suits, shoes and kids clothes I've ever seen in one place.
I could browse forever and don't even mind that my hubby always seems to take extra long looking at the surfboards in the back room.
Ahhh...a store that makes both surfing husbands and their non-surfing spouses happy, what could be better?
oh, maybe the fact that they have a nice sized parking lot in the back which means no feeding those darn meters! -

I dunno... I'll walk in Becker's again in a few days...everytime I walk in there I feel painfully out of place, old and like consumer prey.
I know, I know, I'm not a southbay local, but still a vibe is a vibe.
Maybe the staff is different on my next visit...either way this shop is got history and has to be cool, since my flickr buddy Travis photographs the swimsuit models there. -

Great shop. Friendly staff. I hit this place for clothes. didn't look at much else. They do have some skateboards so if I need a new downhiller I'll check it out.
They have kids sizes also in case you need to clothe the tots or are masculine-petite like me. -

Becker is a great store...
And believe it or not, they have very competitive prices.
Although they can get a little limited on the selection sometimes compared to the corporate big wigs they're still a great store.
When new flip flops are a must I try to shop here as I like putting my money back into Hermosa and not middle America suits.
Also to note they have they're own clothing line which for the price, delivers the same fashion at about half the cost of big name brands...which is always pretty nice considering the economic times.
Final note, free parking on the roof for customers, I like giving money back to Hermosa but not in the form of parking tickets. -

Becker's is such a Hermosa establishment... I love coming here when I revisit my old stomping grounds.
Rest assured, they've got pretty much anything you could want, from stickers to gear to presents for the surfer who has it all. Definitely worth a stop. -

So props to the home town place & there effort to keep us all comin back to the sacred place of Beckers!!!
And oh yeah there sale on Feb 12-15th ROCKED!!! Make sur eyou catch the next one to pick up your new NIXON 51-30 hommies.... -

Been surfing Becker boards for 25 years! I've tried others and liked them , but really love my 9'6 UFO.
If you are just starting out or an old school surfer, you can get great advice and answers from the staff. I'm partial to Bobby since he has assisted me in my last few purchases and never steered me wrong.
Great clothes, cool surf vibe and friendly service. -

Becker is a great surf shop - They've been shaping boards for decades. If you are a longboarder talk to John Leininger. He's the guy with the handlebar moustache. I'm biased of course, since I have been designing their graphics for years - most recently their shopping bags and gift boxes...

You can't say you are from the southbay without having spent a fair amount of time and money at Becker Surf Shop. Having grown up in the southbay, this is one of the places I knew would last forever. The people there are always nice and the service is never a problem. It has anything you could want from clothing, to surf boards to shoes to hats, etc. My favorite place to shop for new gear in the southbay by far.

I like this store. They always have fun stuff. I always walk out with something. I don't really like the service, it seems like everyone is just hanging out talking.

I have been riding Becker surfboards since I was 14, and that was long ago. Phil just had it down, you tell him where you surf and how you like to ride waves and he would knock out magic boards Since his retirement, I have gone to Jose Barahona for my boards and he has continued the good work! Kudos also to John Leininger at the shop for his years of knowledge and friendship!.
