Stopped in with a HUGE group of peeps for some cocktails before heading over to the Pyramid to dance the rest of the night.  Bartender, door, and staff were all perfectly nice to us, despite being a large group and looking potentially annoying even though half of us are natives to the hood and surrounding ones--I tended bar a long time, herds can be irksome.

Service speed was exactly what you expect on a Saturday night in a crowded East Village bar, not extraordinarily fast or slow.  The martini I had needed some work, but every other drink was perfectly passable (hey, martinis are hard, I get it!)

This place has a spot in my heart--when it was still a beauty salon back in the day, it's where my mom got her hair done for my parents' wedding.  Good vibes, GREAT tunes, not too too many annoying NYU types bc it was finals week/beginning of them going home to wherever the hell they came from.

We go here pretty often when we want to hang in the old hood, and it never disappoints.

I get it. It's supposed to be cute. We're supposed to go inside and exclaim, "Did you see the chairs! Oh my g...Did you see the headwarmers!?" (Whatever they're called).

That's all that went through my head.

    oh, beauty bar...

my roommate and i made this one of our girl's night spots... cute; decorated like an old hair salon.. makes for good photos... clever drink names like the shampoo, the conditioner... not the greatest, but at $10 for a martini AND a manicure, who's complaining??

charming little place.. if you're looking for a big high end nyc bar, this isn't it... i like that it's not full of tourists, it's reasonably priced, and everyone that works there is so nice... the woman who does the manicures is so entertaining to talk to...

i love this place; just a good spot for a casual and girly night out with a good friend.

I'm sure this place is great for some people, but it just was not my speed. I went here because we agreed to meet a friend by the nearby subway stop, and if I have a choice between standing outside in the cold waiting or sitting inside and drinking while waiting, I'm always going to go with option 2. However, there was something about the ambiance of this bar that made me just feel uncomfortable. Maybe it was just a little too kitsch for my taste. The idea of manicures in a dive-type bar definitely skeeved me. I cannot imagine wanting to spend my money on that.

I decided nonetheless to give them three stars because I'm not going to give a place a terrible review just because it's not really my thing, but also I will admit a cape cod for only $4 in NYC seemed like a pretty reasonable price to me.

Retro kitsch in a fun bar with reasonable drink prices. Dropped in here the other night while out on the town with my girl. Kind of a funky cool retro decor as you feel as if you are partying inside a throwback beauty salon from the 60's-70's. Those daring enough were actually getting their nails manicured here - in the dark. WTF?

Hey, there is a DJ spinning cool R&B and rock tunes from the 60's so that was all right. Plus, the drinks here are pretty cheap overall, as our two pints of beer were only $5 each. Hey, it was a PBR and a Blue Moon, but what the heck. Bartenders seemed nice enough too.

Decent amount of spots to sit in around the bar, with a bunch of seats under hair dryers that you can picture the girls of the Brady Bunch sitting under. Large back room area also that was closed the night we came here. We were there around 8:00 and it was not too crowded but getting there. We were able to score a few spots under the hair dryer and chill out for a bit.

Beauty Bar has a fun laid back vibe. Cool gimmick, but my girl had to notice and proclaim - "Why do all the other guys in this place look really effeminate? Even those with girlfriends look like a chromosome away from being a women."  Bwahahaha!

What do you get when you cross a salon with a bar? You get Beauty Bar. The concept is original and the space is pretty good. It has all the visual necessities of a salon and all you need from a bar.

The back room/dance floor does get a bit crowded at times. I usually hangout near the middle/front of the bar. You will see a wide range of people that come in here. All pretty laid back.

Do NOT get a manicure here. The chick who did my nails was a hot mess. She cut them all different lengths, got nail polish everywhere and basically made it look like a 5 year old did my nails (which is what I've been telling people for the past week). Even at 10 dollars with a free drink, it's not worth it to ruin whatever nails you ladies have. Not to mention, there's only like 10 different (shade) color selections. I guess we should know better than to get our nails done in a bar where the beautician is probably hammered the entire time. Oh well, now I definitely know better for next time. Other than that, the drink specials were good and the bartender pleasant.

I wish I could give this space a better rating because the concept of getting your nails done while having cocktails is something I can stand behind.. but the place is kind of a dump! I was supposed to attend a private event but when we arrived, to the dark smelly bar, we were told, quite rudely.  that the private event room was closed and the only way we could wait for the rest of our group is if we ordered drinks right away.. mind you there were 60+ people in our group and 1 bartender. Not only could the front of the room not handle all of us, but there was no way the bar could handle the orders. As I did that night, i'll take my business elsewhere next time im looking for drinks in the city.

No thank you Beauty Bar, no thank you!

Ahhh, Beauty Bar.... this place will have a special spot in my heart always, as something ridiculous/disastrous/hilarious always happens.  I don't think I have ever had a normal night here....

Front of the house is pretty cool, although I've never had a manicure (not sure why anyone in their right mind would get a mani at a BAR in the DARK for $10) its a funny concept.  Drinks are moderately priced, and service is as good as it can get in a pretty busy bar.  Always have managed to snag a seat if I needed one, and great for groups. I like to bring friends here at least once so they can get a taste o' the crazy.

Spent two consecutive Halloweens here, ran into some long lost buddies from near and far, and even stayed till closing one night.  Although the DJ can't ever really decide what kind of music he wants to play, its cool-BB is really the spot to hit if you want to get sloppy, dance like a crazy person.

You can always find someone to chat up here, or if your in to being creeped on- win?? sure why not. The occasionally exploding drink on the floor provides a wonderful ambiance as well, I really don't feel like the night has started at Beauty Bar until I hear that beautiful shatter!

OH ps- $20 credit card minimum- prepared to get drunk if ya aint got no cash.

Wahhhhhh wahhhhhhh. It smells like nail polish. Wahhhhhhh. Look you lame NYU trust fund assholes... walk outside. All of New York smells of garbage and dog shit. Get over it. Or move back to Des Moines. Uggggh.

That said... when this was still a salon, Pavement shot a video here. Yeah.. tell your little 19 year old boyfriend that you bring here about that. He will act impressed, regardless of knowing who the fuck Pavement even is. Then, get him good and wasted on the strong and cheap drinks here... put him in a cab back to Bushwick, and find a real man.

    LOVE THIS BAR.

So my friends aren't huge fans because
    A) creepy guy hit on one
    B) my friends don't like awesome 80s rock/pop
    C) my friends are *sometimes* lame

I end up going back (almost) every week and feel like I know their playlist. Haven't really met too many regulars yet, but I'm sure I will.

For those of you who haven't been, it's a super kitschy beauty salon converted into a bar with a back room for dancing (opens at 11pm), disco ball, and projector that often is playing some renee zellwegger movie.

The drinks are fabulously affordable & the music rocks.

As for the clientele, it's pretty straight crowd, though everyone dresses in hipster/sexually ambiguous wear. (I love how those are sometimes synonymous). Usually my girl-friends get hit on, and one has even found her current boyfriend there.

I love that I can come here and rock out without worrying about people judging.

There are a lot of bathrooms (which is a plus). But it is super divey, so beware - they're only clean at the start of the evening.

All in all, a fun fun fun bar. Check it out =)

A really cool bar with a dance floor in the back. It is themed as a beauty salon so it has old fashioned large metal hair drying machines that you see ladies use. On certain nights, you can pay to get your nails painted, while getting your drink on.

The front part is good for drinks and sitting around. The back area is large with a projector screen and perfect for getting your dance on without the whole situation of having to getting into a club (getting decked out, signing up for a list, waiting on line, paying a cover, etc.).

Came here on a Friday night with 4 grown ass men who had no idea how to react to this 'girly' nail salon slash bar.  They all gave me that 'we should effin leave' look, but I straight up ignored those fools, bee-lined to the bar and ordered the first round of drinks. 1 gin and tonic. 1 vodka pineapple. 3 beers. $18. Yes, one - eight.  5 drinks for $18. Three rounds later, said men were as down as they'd ever be to get their nails did. Mmmm hmmm.

The smell of nail polish + whatever incense they have burning to combat the nail polish smell can be a bit nauseating at first, but that becomes a non-issue after a couple rounds of ridiculously CHEAP drinks.  And the 40's style music can be a bit blah, but it adds to the charm.

Hunger started to ninja chop the ish out of stomachs so decided to leave and missed the chance to hook up our nails. Next time. Yep, there definitely will be a next time.   Go here for happy hour [5 - 9p] with your peeps, chat it up, get sauced, get your nails did, then move on to another spot if you're in the mood to shake your tailfeather. Definitely a great place to start the night.

    Pain, blood, ouch!

Don't take them up on their $10 drink/manicure deal. Take the drink, not the manicure. I'm still in pain! I wasn't expecting a great manicure, but I thought I could get my nails painted decently and not leave bleeding. I was wrong! The manicurist, while very friendly, broke though my skin while filing my nails, and then very painfully (and unevenly) pushed back my cuticles. Now they're all jagged and look worse than when I came in. To add insult to injury, it's been about 5 hours since the incident and my nail polish is already peeling off around all of the edges! Didn't even last a day!

It's a lovely gimmick to give manicures at the Beauty Bar, but it doesn't seem safe or sanitary to have that sort of situation going on. It's a dark bar, with a teeny little light coming from a side angle for the manicurist to do her work under. And based on my experience and the results, I really wonder if this person had a license or any training.

My friend had her nails done too, and both of our nails came out poorly. Nail polish on the skin, areas of nail with no polish at all, and of course there was the blood.

You're better off just getting the drink and saving yourself the agony. If you're looking for a terrible manicure, it's safer to have your little sister do it for you.

Where else can you get a $10 martini and manicure?  No where, I tell you!  Also, they have some sweet happy hour specials and an awesome music selection.  Let's not forget the cool retro decor and the seats along the wall are hair dyers - kind of made me think of the Beauty School Drop  Out scene from Grease.

Cool spot, but later at night this place is swarming with kiddies.

Even if you have a freckled little moonpie face, you will never be carded ever.  Wait.  Is it okay for me to write this here?  I mean, I am just describing my own experience as a lady of a certain age.  I don't know how this bar's policies will affect you.  So, you know.  Disclaimers and whatnot.

Even if you pee as fast as humanly possible, some dude is still going to knock on the bathroom door at LEAST four times during the space of time it takes you to button your pants back up.  Pro tip:  don't rush and hit your head on the wall.

Even if it is three in the afternoon on a Tuesday, the door guy will still enthusiastically remind you not to leave your bag inside while you go out to smoke.  Even if you inform him that it contains only a Louis L'amour paperback (shutup) and a pair of panties.  Apparently theft is a problem here, right between the vegan shish-ka-bob diner and the barbeque shop?  Who knew.

The place is cute and dingy, like a junk shop in Natchez, Mississippi.  Or my grandmother's bathroom.  I have never had a manicure, only many beers.  But I am a classy lady like that.  I mean, I have had manicures in the past, just not at Beauty Bar.

I deducted a star, because I think that there is also a Beauty Bar in Austin.  That makes me feel like they are sneaking up on me behind my back.  Shit's creepy, yo.

Yes, the mannequins at the front of the store are scary, but the people who work here aren't. Our bartender was a really nice lady who took the time to talk to us (and you don't see many of those anymore).

Note that the manicures-and-martinis special is available every night starting at 6pm, not just on Wednesdays as stated by past reviewers. However, coming here on a weekend evening isn't the best idea if you don't want to wait or to risk not getting a spot. My friends and I came here on a Friday night and a large bachelorette party had already made reservations (i.e. paid in advance), but we were patient and only had to wait about an hour or so for tickets to go on sale again. Overall, it was a pretty fun night. Also, the drink tickets that come with the manicures aren't limited to martinis; you can get other drinks with them too.

I love the decoration, the music (specially when they stick with classics) and the fact that they still do your nails if you get there early.

I really dont like the waiter that works in the back room during the weekends. Very arrogant dude. In the other hand, the guys that work in the front bar are nice, so i recommend a little walk to get your drinks!

It is a place with character. A place Id totally recommend!

Had a great first visit to Beauty Bar last night with some girlfriends.  We arrived just when they opened and enjoyed the company of the "barmaid" and manicurist until all was set up.  All of us enjoyed the $10 manicure and cocktail deal.  Rachel, the manicurist for the evening, was hilarious and great with a nail wand.  Plus, her sweet iPod mix kept us on our toes.  I'll definitely be back.

The smell of nail polish and related products was overwhelming. I almost didn't need to bother with a drink.

I wanted to like this place - the decor was kitschy cute, the drink/manicure special is a spot on deal. But the crowd was weird (it was overrun with groups of single dudes? I mean, I'm all for the male manicure but they were all clustering oddly and not getting their nails done. It was weird.) and the bartender was having such a grumpy night you didn't want to be near the bar.

I guess I'll have to come back when the dance floor is open and maybe give it another chance!

A uniqe place to have a drink, listen to old rock/punk songs, and watch hipster girls getting their nails done.

I discovered this bar a few years ago. After your first visit, it really is not that unique and interesting. It's a good place to have a drink with friends once in a whie.

Drink prices are cheap, and the music depending on what DJ is playing, can range from very bad to excellent. On some nights they have a DJ that plays descent  songs in a seperate spacious room in the back.

The best time to go is either on a Thursday or Saturday. There is a $20 credit card limit.

I woke up this morning with a slight headache and a manicure so I believe I stopped in here at some point last night.

Theme bars can suck. I mean, there could have been a floorshow. There could have been a joust. But no, just lots of ladies drinking gin and getting their nails done. I've a penchant for retro things, so the 50s-style parlor chairs with attached hair dryers was a nice touch. Drinks were reasonably priced. Staff friendly and pretty proficient. I mean, this is a dimly lit bar and my nails actually look nice.

That being said, the crowd isn't for the macho; think Girl's Night Out, bachelorette, etc.

I came here last night (Sunday) and my friend and I walked in and we were the only ones not dressed in costume! I mean, Halloween isn't until next weekend but this bar started early....well, VERY early. Everyone's costumes were pretty cool, some unique, but there was a guy in a green t-shirt, a hoodie and a pained green face....what the hell is that?? Anyways, these 2 guys were dressed as characters from the movie A Clockwork Orange, now THAT was awesome! I envied those costumes!

Now to the bar, it's very small, and can get very crowded. We really couldn't get through. The crowd here is very....ummmm.....strange. It's not at all the college-y type of people and not the upscale crowd either....it's like the socially awkward average joes (which I actually prefer) and they are all super friendly! The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff was awesome. There were a few couches and people just lounging around, we didn't get to venture into the back as the crowd was too thick to get through. I ALWAYS pass this bar and this was the first time I walked in. I was definitely pleasantly surprised. I thought the title of the bar screamed PRETENTIOUS but I was very wrong! The decor is super unique and gives that retro feeling. I will definitely come back here again....just probably not on a Sunday.

I don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet. I seriously spent almost all of last year coming here on saturdays. I even booked the back room for my birthday party in July.

What can be said about this place? if you want to chill while listening to great tunes and then dance your ass off on a saturday then this is the place to be. Ice also come randomly during the week and the dj's always have me staying out later than I want to.

Now on to the back. Does it get crowded sometimes: HELL YES! but funny enough I've never waited more than a few minutes for a drink. The bartender has a good memory which expedites things.

Overall, I really love this place. It's like my go to bar whenever someone I haven't seen in ages wants to hang or fun for a 'low key' night that ends up dancing til 4am and getting artichoke's after.

This place is pretty kick-ass but really depends on the night. Originally, we first came here because a friend had a good experience from a sister bar back in San Diego. I was never able to lay my finger on when its going to be a good night or not... but when its crowded, its always happening. An example would have been St. Patrick's day, one year the place was filled to max capacity and the next - almost deserted.

I must admit, the group that goes here I think is a bit hipster with a mix of nerd. But lets not stereotype everyone here as that.

Highlights are that they do have their discounts on certain drinks, sometimes its the Heineken, Blue Moon and other nights its Blue Ribbon ::shutter::.

In the front its largely a traditional bar and on a slow nights the nail benches are pulled out for the ladies and some gents. However, on the better nights, they open up the dance floor, dust off some house and hip-hop records and watch people go nuts. They do a have a second bar back there.

One issue is that they have only a few bathrooms and even with a few people there can be a wait.

Overall if you see a line out the door. Go check it out and have fun! Even if you just want to kick it with some friends its a good place to be. And if  you come in and don't like it, there is always Artichoke right down the street.

I had the worst experience at this dump.  I went there with a few friends, we were going to a variety of different places in the EV and we chose to stop into Beauty Bar.  It wasn't even that crowded and the woman bartender with long dark hair and lots of tattoos completely ignored anyone who wasn't a "regular" there.  She was extremely rude and told the other male bartender not to serve "rude customers."  I was extremely patient and asked several times for a few beers for my friends and I, how that makes me rude is beyond me!! Apparently she doesn't care about serving new customers?

I don't recommend this place even for 1 drink, it's a waste of time!!

Genuinely funky Original Hipster bar from back in the day when this sort of thing was far more original, still drawing plenty of PYTs as the night wears on. A very not-annoying choice on a difficult block.

I can't decide how I feel about this place. The idea at first seems cool, I mean a martini and manicure for $10? Why not?!

I came for a gf's birthday last week. Eventually, my bf and his posse came, and to my surprise, they decided they all wanted manicures as well (I think it was the excessive drinking they did beforehand). To partake in the festivities, you ask the bartender for the deal and order your drink and in return get a manicure card. The card has your number, and the number display is behind the manicurist. When we first arrived, there were two manicurists. However, around 11 (which is early!), one of the manicurists left. To give you an idea what this meant, I was number 32 and the number was on 27. The boys were numbers 34 and onwards. We quickly realized we weren't all getting manicures before we left. Like gentleman, they waited until I got my manicure (which ended up being 11:45). The manicurist was extremely sweet, and it came out great.

All in all, the place has a weird crowd, the music is way outdated, and depending on when you get there, you may not get the manicure you came for. But $10 for a martini isn't absurd here in the city, so life will go on.

Attempted to come here last night n meet a friend who was already at the bar waiting for me but was denied entry by the stinkface self-hating gay doorman because I expressed to him how rude he was being to me. It started because another friend of mine who just got off of work came w/me and when we got to the door he realized he left his ID on the dresser at home. I had my ID of course and showed it to SSGD because I intended on coming in anyway. He of course waved his rudeness at him for not having it and I told him I'd be right back inside was just going to tell him bye n ask him why he didnt have his ID. The door guy followed us outside actually n there was no 1 else outside, the bar was pretty slow. I hugged my friend bye and turned around to come back in and the door guy (SSGD) immediately snapped at me n said he needed to check my ID again for re-entry. (???) I told him I practically never left but he said my ID didnt scan n kept re-itterating that you can't get in w/ out ID check. Okay man don't keep repeating
it like ur some nelly hall monitor just because my other friend didnt have his ID. I have $ to spend here meanwhile my friend is just sitting there watch this unfold remember the bar was pretty dead at this time. My ID was legit of course but just had to be a jerk as if he was working the rope at Studio54 circa '79. He asked me if I had a problem n i told
him i do if he's gonna keep talkn down to me n he said " ok u can't come in, leave now!" I asked if I could tell my friend to come to the door since she had been waitn for me n already had a drink just
ordered he still wouldn't, she saw this so came to the door to find out what happened. She told me to wait so she could finish her drink while i waited outside. The SSGD continued making comments to me so I told him that it must be nice to play god on a slow night while losing $. Until they replace that jerk I'll spend my $$ elsewhere because he wont let u in if u dare to question him regardless of the situation. I didnt think gays could be such a douch-bag. He really had no reason to force me n my friend who was already inside to go elsewhere, I guess he's related to someone or screwn the owner who knows...

This is a fun, chill spot to hang with your girlfriends.  At $10, a manicure and a specialty cocktail is a steal.  The vibe is laidback and the decor is so retro, you feel like you're taken back into time. Yes, it could get crowded later in the night - so you should go there early in the night. If you get here early around 8-9ish, you shouldn't have a problem getting a seat or table.  I went here for a bachelorette party, and it was a great start to a fun night!

As some of the other reviewers have touched on, this place seems to be hit or miss. I've been here several times, and it just seems like a different bar every time I go.

First off, the atmosphere is pretty damn cool. The retro feel and the whole beauty parlor thing is cute and kitschy. It's a great place to bring friends from out of town because it's got that "trendy" quality.

The crowd, though, always seems different every time I go. Sometimes it seems like hipsters, sometimes it seems like college kids, sometimes it just seems like regular people. I can't figure out who the "regulars" of this place are.

I agree with another reviewer that if the dance floor is closed, don't even bother staying. In fact, if the bar isn't packed, don't bother going in because there will be nothing to do but bob around awkwardly by the bar.

If it's a busy night and the dance floor is crowded, though, definitely give it a shot because I've had some fun nights dancing here with my girlfriends. I've never gotten a manicure here, but that seems like fun too.
