Imagine Trimalchio's preposterous dinner in Petronius' "Satyricon." Move it to Duanesburg.

Bear's steakhouse is like pornography you can't stop enjoying. Gigantic, thick slabs of perfectly done prime rib that are larger than your thigh, herring appetizers(!), huge baked potatoes, perfunctory glazed carrots and dinner rolls, all served by a very attentive and mildly raunchy waiter. See the photo taken by one of our dinner party: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I purposefully came back early from seeing my girlfriend in Vermont because I was invited here by a neighbor. I had heard such great things.

I was not disappointed. You need to make reservations in advance. It is family owned. John waited on us. He was hilarious and he gave incredible service. We had a choice of Shrimp Cocktail where they were the size of prawns. Fresh Mozzarella w/ Roasted Red Peppers, or Herring for appetizer. I had the Shrimp the cocktail sauce had the perfect kick. Chris has the Mozz/Peppers it looks amazing. See the pictures I uploaded.

Then we had a choice of Green Salad of John;s Mom's Beef Vegetable soup made with beef tenderloin. I had the soup it was delicious. Not salty at all fully flavorful. Jason and Jess next to me had the salads to John's chagrin. The rest of our table had the soup and John;s mother almost gave Jason and Jesse a time out.

The main course we had a platter of Chateaubriand and one of Prime Rib w/ Baked Potatoes and Carrots. Both were immense. I mean for 8 people I knew eating a dinner roll was a mistake. They were cooked perfectly and very savory.

As for dessert...OH MY! French Style Cheese Cake with real caramel sauce! John also offered Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake which was delicious, and shame on me for not remembering the other 4 choices.

I highly recommend this charming place especially if you want to entertain visitors to the Capitol Region!

This is quite simply one of the hidden gems in the greater Capital District. I'd heard about it from a friend that I used to work with. When I called to make a reservation, the person on the other end picked up and said "Hello". At first I thought I didn't have the Bear's Steakhouse. Don't worry, you have the right number! My fiance and I opted for the early seating, 5:30 on a recent Saturday. There are two seatings, 5:30 and 8.  What I wasn't expecting was to have to pre-order the prime rib or chateau briand. I tried to pre-order the prime rib, however was told that I needed to order for two. Knowing full well my partner wouldn't want it, I decided that I would need to order off the menu.

Getting there was a nice drive, and it feels like you are in someones living room in their house. Probably because I think it may actually be someones house. When we went in to sit down, we were told that they had extra prime rib, and that I would be able to have some. Score!!

The menu is very basic. Maybe ten choices for entrees. Fiance ordered the scallops, and we decided to split jumbo shrimp as an app. The shrimp were by far the largest either of us had ever had. And the cocktail sauce had some zip, taboot.

My salad was good. Average, but I wasn't looking or expecting something out of this world. My companion ordered the soup, vegetable beef, her favorite. She said it was the best she'd ever had.

My prime rib was the largest piece of meat I have ever been served. Easily three pounds, it was perfect. A nice crust, with it still rarer in the middle. It also came with a baked potato and huge ear of corn on the cob. The scallops were huge, and she was served at least twenty. They were rich tasting, and I'm pretty sure we both only ate maybe 1/3 of our meals.

Dessert, we both had pie. I love pie. A huge slice of mixed berry, and my fiance had chocolate cream. I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, and I didn't get charged. Not sure an accident or how they do things around there, but a real nice touch regardless.

The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food and quality you get. The platters of prime rib and chateau briand looked amazing, and this would be great place to bring a group of people for a great meal out.

This is a small quaint Steakhouse (seats approx. 80) you need reservation and the phone # is unlisted so write it down.

Absolutely hands down the best dinner I have ever had.  There Specialty is Chateau Brion and Prime Rib and trust me you will never see another portion like this for the rest of your life you will have enough food for 3 meals.  They also have chicken and fish but the steak is there baby.

For a small family owned business they have the stuff,  They have there own specialty drinks prepare by there son John and dinner prepared by there other son Bobby, Daughter in-law also works there with Mom and Dad. Very enjoyable.

People will tell you the The Bears Steakhouse is in the middle of nowhere, or that it's hard to find, but neither is really true.  It's on NY Rt. 7, only 1.5 miles south of the intersection of U.S. 20, a very busy intersection running through Duanesburg, NY.  You wouldn't expect to find a notable steakhouse out here, but it's not like it's a place all by itself out in the wilderness.  In fact, there's an ice cream stand right across the street, a lodge practically next door, and two diners within a couple of miles.

The restaurant is in a moderate-sized room (holds maybe 15 tables) of the home of the owners and has a bit of a hodgepodge rustic-industrial-grandma's-house feel.  On the Grandma side, there's floral wallpaper all around and a display of mostly cheap modern teddy bears (vintage bears would be a nicer touch).  The Rustic comes from some exposed wood here and there, and also from a few hard wood western "wagon wheel" chairs that a handful of diners are provided.  The out-of-place Industrial look comes from the vinyl covered institutional steel chairs that most of the patrons are provided with.

Our waiter was very pleasant and cheerful, though I wish that he - or my wife! - had pointed out that the laminated single-sheet menu listed items on BOTH of its sides, as I entirely missed seeing the list of appetizers and deserts on the reverse, thinking that the later must be on a menu of its own (not that I EVER order desert, I just like to enjoy reading the descriptions!).  As for the appetizers, I had half-heard another server shout the list of appetizers (twice) to diners seated at another table, so I assumed our server would eventually be doing the same (I say "half-heard", because the restaurant was VERY loud, thus the need for the other server to shout in order to be heard by the people she was serving (the gals at this long table, in fact, were in a particularly loud and frisky mood, sharing sexual innuendo with our server - and he with them - frequently drawing stares from all around the room).

Dinner began with a bowl of rolls, most of which where actually stale (at least two of them were hard as stone through-and-through).  Then came the mixed mescalin salad, that was fine, but not as tender as I would have expected from a restaurant with the pedigree of this one.

No matter.. this place is about meat, and there was no disappointment in the quality or amount of food we were next served.  I ordered the Delmonico steak, which was about a foot long, 6" wide, and 2" thick!  Easily enough meat for 3 meals, and in fact, I barely ate any of it, cutting off a large slab from one end in order to sample a few slices from nearer the center.  The meat was a bit on the rare side of the ordered medium-rare, but it was still a marvel.  It also came with a baked potato and a large pile of perfectly cooked, glazed baby carrots, every bite of which I devoured.

My wife ordered the pork chops, and they arrived about 2.5" thick, each chop measuring something in the neighborhood of 4" x 6".  Again, enough meat for several meals.  In fact, I ate a healthy portion of one of hers, and she finished that one off, saving the remaining chop for another day.

Our server came over to check on us, after the other server had taken away our meat to be wrapped, and - since he asked if everything had been to our liking - I decided I would mention the stale rolls.  He was very apologetic, and sent us home with 4 soft, fresh ones, which I thought was a nice touch.

There was one final disappointment, however.  When my wife and I got home, we discovered that the person who wrapped our meat tossed out the large slab I had separated from rest in order to get at the center.  I'm sure there was a lot of fat along the edges, but there was also a heck of a lot of meat still in that slab!
