A few month's ago, I took a walk over to the Beard Papa's in Soho after dinner at Ippudo and imagine the horror on my face when I found out that it closed down.  It was a sad sad sad day for me.  Now imagine my surprise when walking down Broadway on the UWS, I stumbled upon a Beard Papa's.  All is not lost!

Bought 3 and finished 3.  It was delicious!  My boyfriend got the pistachio mochi and he liked it.  The mochi is a bit pricey at $1.65 for a mochi the size of a silver dollar.  The original cream puffs are $1.75 each and worth every penny.  It's not too sweet and not too bread-y.  It is perfection.

I always always always have passed by Beard Papa's, sometimes reading it as "Bread" Papa's, never going in, and never really knowing what it exactly was.  Who was this plump, gnome-like chef, puffing on a pipe and staring me down as I lug my groceries or visit Grom?

Then yesterday I had a birthday dinner date with my good friend - she was making the pizza, and I was to provide dessert and wine.  Eeek!  What was I going to do?  No time to make anything, cupcakes are over done, wasn't about to buy an entire cake... it was time to see what the little gnome man had in store.

Seeing that I was obviously completely naive about this whole cream puff ordeal, the cashier treated me to a large spoonful of fresh, vanilla custard filling.  Then I understood.  Beard Papa wasn't staring me down, he was high on exquisite custard.  Years of pumping his belly full of the stuff has made him a spaced-out custard cream puff man.

Enlightened and eager to try every baked good available, I bought one original cream puff, one cookie crumb cream puff, two slivers of cheese cake, and one fondant au chocolate, all for around 7 dollars.

I really like these desserts because they definitely are not a sugar overload.  I can eat one or two of the treats and not feel like I do when I get way too much frosting on a cupcake. I would go back again for both the cream puffs and the fondant au chocolate, however, the cheese cake had a too-light texture and didn't stay attached to the papery "pie crust" beneath it.  So, no more cheesecake, it was just too weird.

Thank you Beard Papa for giving me a new dessert experience and letting me in on the swirl of cream puff dreaminess going on in your cut-out cardboard head.

Best $1.75 I ever spent, this week.

Let Beard Papa take you back to a kinder, sweeter, pre-80s NYC, and know that the girl smiling dopily while she wanders up Broadway with the white powder all over her face is quite possibly on a fresh cream puff high.

If Beard Papa had a comfortable decor that encouraged me to sit and stay a minute as I fall victim to my crispy, buttery light but oh so cool and creamy Beard Papa original cream puff craving, I'd give them 5 stars.

But the ice cold white plastic interior is too cramped and too one-note so I choose to let my Fat Kid Flag fly free as I walk up the street munching on their delightfully powdered sugar coated handful of yum.

When I had my first Papa Puff I closed my eyes and envisioned having a wedding cake of cream puffs to delight my guests... which was odd, as I don't even want a wedding, or have a boyfriend. They are that good. I want to share them with my loved ones.

Heaven in my mouth.

They fill every pastry upon order. Each fluffy, light as air, fist sized pastry is filled with overly generous portion of amazing choux. Not too sweet, not  at all "eggy" or too heavy. Just melts, simply melts in my mouth as it slides out of the pastry.

These cream puffs are great at all locations.

I wonder if Puff Daddy could sue for copyright infringement on this shoppe for stealing his name.  Kind of.  I've been around the world and all my friends tell me about this rotund dessert.

But it's true, can't nobody hold this cream puff down.  It is light , fluffy as a feather, and sweet-but-not-too-sweet.  However, I think it is a little too expensive for a cream puff.  The more money we come across, the more problems we see.  I'll be missing you, since I can't get this in Texas.

This place is so simple yet heavenly.

You get your choice of either the normal cream puff or a cookie cream puff (crunchier and tastier, in my opinion) and a vanilla or caramel filling.  I tried both fillings in the cookie cream puff and I've gotta say, THAT WAS DELICIOUS!

I respect cupcakes.  The good ones are moist, have great frosting to accompany the cake and make you feel all happy inside.  But cream puffs from Beard Papa's are cheap, not sickeningly sweet and are a GREAT alternative to those cupcakes that are, let's be honest, bought way too often.

Do yourself a favor and check this place out.

I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU. HAVE MY BABIES PLEASE, BEARD PAPA('s).

Green tea flavor and Original are amazing. My eyes are unfortunately bigger than my stomach-- I always buy 4 or 6 creampuffs, even though I can barely finish two. They are best fresh but IMHO, there's nothing wrong with popping them in the fridge and having them for breakfast the next morning. After all, soggy, giant cream puff is better than no cream puff, right? If you're a big fan of custard (like in your napoleans) over whipped cream, beard papa's will do you right.

When you see an otherwise well cared for New Yorker on the street with spooge at the edge of their mouth and tangled in their hair, covered in a spray of white powder, voraciously licking the bottom of a bag, what comes to mind?

A) Anthrax
B) Rabies
C) Walk of Shame
D) Beard Papa's Cream Puffs

Thankfully, the answer is most likely D), Beard Papa's Cream Puffs.
Turning adults into rabid, pornographic little kids with anthrax, one puff at a time.  Fabulous.

Sweets, Sweets!  I've always been a sweet person and searching for sweets that are fresh and reasonable priced.  The cream puffs just fills my craving and appetite.  The flavors are the standard vanilla, chocolate and green tea which occassionally they do have specials.

I love Beard Papa's Cream Puffs.  The cream puffs are best when fresh.  They do have specials with flavors occassionally.  They're light and tasty.  It caterers to the Asian clientele--finally and with less fat in their filling.

I like this location a lot as it's a residential area.   With all the hustle and bustle as it's very busy and crowded the staff is still attentive with their patrons.

On my visit to NY, my friend told me I had to check out this cream puff place. Now, I'm not a big fan of cream and usually don't eat it. I was used to the miniature cream puffs that Costco sells so when I saw this huge cream puff, I had to try it.

I was not disappointed. The puff is light and airy and the cream is light and airy itself, not too sweet and with small amounts of the vanilla bean that can be seen. I've tried their original, eclairs, pumpkin and seasame, but my fav is the original. I've even had the opportunity to try the puffs in LA, HK and Oz and they all tasted the same which means consistency! This puffs are like the Krispy Kreme of cream puffs. You can't just eat one!

Beard Papa's is a worthy choice for an after dinner cream puff, and a great place to stop for a quick dessert while you're walking around the Upper West Side.

I like the excessively sterile feel and the friendly customer service, but apparently all of the cream puff baking makes for an off-putting smell when you're in front of the register.  Also watch out for that curved counter; my puff almost slid off and went splat, but I made a good save.  They're very nice at Beard Papa's though, so they probably would've given me a new one.

The first time I went I had a Frozen Green tea drink, which wasn't bad but disappointed me a bit.  I bet their green tea lattes are good, though.  And, yes, The puffs ARE delicious

The seating area in the back is small, and even though the smell doesn't carry too much back there, I'd suggest taking your puff and lattes on a nice walk with you and your loved one.

3.5 stars.

What is this cream puff craze?  It makes cupcakes look like childs play.  Seriously, I rather have a cream puff any day.   It's light and fluffy. And best of all a cheap treat.  You don't have to wait on a massive line like Magnolia's to get your fix.  So make you way to the nearest Beard Papa.

I've always loved Beard Papa's regular and eclair puffs, but after tonight's experience, I had to post a review. The Man and I had date night, which started out with burgers and fries at Big Nick's. We had some time to kill before our movie, so we walked a little way and decided to pop into Beard Papa for some dessert. Their tag line is "Healthy and Delightful." Healthy? Uh... sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night. Delightful? Most definitely! Don't ask where the cream puff was supposed to fit after the massive burger I about inhaled not that long before. I was determined to cram one in, especially after I saw the sign for a yogurt mango filled frozen puff. Wait... whaaaat?!??! Frozen creamy, tangy, yogurt-y goodness flavored with sweet mango??? Aw, hells to the YEAH! Other than the fact that I probably should have let it sit a while and give the yogurt a chance to soften up a bit (it came fresh from the freezer and was pretty solid), I have no complaints. It really was as good as I imagined. And it's frozen yogurt, so maybe it really could pass for health food, no? There could have been some larger chunks of mango in there, but whatevs. I think I've just found my new favorite summertime treat.

After spending thirteen months in Japan I came back to the states missing hundreds of things: Pretz, Kitty Chan, Curry Udon, Anapanman, bad ass sushi, shirts that say: Bring Bring...
Beard Papa's custard-cream puffs, however, are on the very top of my list.

At Beard Papa there is no choosing between "this" or "that", it is always custard AND cream and it is always perfect!  The custard is flecked with fresh vanilla bean, and the whipped cream is added to lighten the consistency of the custard.  This heavenly combo is injected into a pastry shell that is first crispy and then chewy.  Finally, each puff is sprinkled with powdered sugar.

While Beard Papa does have other things you should try: a variety of different flavors of puffs (Green Tea, Earl Grey, Chocolate) mochi ice cream, cheese cake bars, and more, the first time you go to Beard Papa you've gotta get The Original (puff)!

Here's why I give Beard Papa 5 Stars:
1) It's the best friggin' puff I've ever had.
2) It's cheap--we're talking a couple of bucks.
3) There's no weird ingredients--no partially hydrogenated oils.
4) The staff is friendly, accommodating and adorable.
5) It's an authentic Japanese experience and it's only a subway ride away!

I love cream puffs since I was little. Beard Papa is super delicious. It's not very sweet. When I first found it in New York, my tears almost came out of my eyes. It reminds me of Taiwan. For me, it's a taste of happiness.

Every week, this place gets their "special flavor"
This week, by the way was Green tea! last week was Chocolate.

I loved Green tea one!

I can't wait til Earl Grey, milk tea, organic sesame, and caramel!

Well, if you can't wait, go to the one in Astor Place. 8th St'. East village one.

They have different flavors every day.
Thurseday is ROYAL MILK TEA and friday is Green tea, and sunday is organic sesame! These would be the days I wanna go!

but I feel like every week differnet flavor is better than every day because, you have something to look forward for!

Their cream puffs are divine!  I like the fact that they do not over stuff the pastry.  Easy peasy on the go finger food.  I also bought a package of mochi ice cream.  Not sure if these are house made, but they were really good.  Almost as good as the Bubbly's brand.

I only wish Phoenix had a storefront.

I wanted to take my friend to Grom after going to the Museum of Natural History; however, I really didn't feel like waiting in a 40 person long line...so we went to Beard Papa's and I am very happy.
The cream puffs are simple, yummy and cheap ($1.50); but, what I really love is the box of 4 or 8 (vanilla, espresso, green tea and strawberry) mochi that they have.  They are SO good I have to buy a box to eat on the way home or I won't have any to put in the freezer for later.
They have a choclate and green tea frappe which are sort of bitter and flavorless.

I just had my first taste and I'm sure they can't be any good for me 'cause they taste too damn good. The W76th & Bdwy store is on my way home from the subway; even the regular flavor is so good that I'm gonna have to take a different route home otherwise I'll easily gain 10 lbs. I'd like to compare their treats to something else, but I just can't think of anything (other than Junior's Cheesecake) that tastes this fresh, this good and this sinful.

It's a good thing they close at 8pm or I'd probably be on my way back over.

Fantastic cream puffs at decent prices!  Get em while they are fresh.  The hot cocoa is also wonderful -- hand-whipped.  I am tempted to head back and try the new chocolate fondant (looks as good as those little Williams-Sonoma molten cakes).

Reduced prices when you buy in bulk!

Bonus:  there is a roomy bathroom in the back.  Ask for the key at the counter.

My brother and his Brazilian wife communicate through pastry.

I love that they're foodies.  (Both thin, by the way.)  But when is too much?  The menu at their Christmas lunch included homemade fennel soup, smoked salmon, followed by three concurrent desserts: chocolate cake, apple crumble, and Beard Papa cream puffs.

I'd made the apple crumble from a new recipe, and it came out too sweet. The chocolate cake had a striking distance that made smelling it tantamount to eating it.  But I gave in to the cream puffs, and I savor my fall.

Fresh, light, crunchy crust.  Gooey, creamy, vanilla filling that melts in your mouth.  Texture.  Flavor.  Satisfaction.  Satiation.

A little bit sweet for me to repeat, but that goes for "I love you" as well.

I don't like sweets much..
Beard Papa's does the trick though because it's not that rich pasty heavy cream flavor. Plus it's baked. It's sort of fluffy like clouds, if clouds had a taste,.. air like.
Certainly a pop in the mouth sort of snack.. don't be fooled.. they are sort of huge.. get one or two for first timers. Stick with the Vanilla flavor.
Beard Papa's employees are extremely friendly. I usually go to the location by NYU/8th Street in the bustle of downtown Broadway. Avoid the long dinnertime lines..

Sometimes you have to give your own ass a little pep talk.  For example, whenever I enter a Beard Papa, I have to say, "Okay, badonk, I know you're trying to get into those skinny jeans, but this is small-batch custard hand-blended with organic vanilla beans in a crispy choux pastry.  So you're going to have to hang in there and fight off those empty calories the best you can, okay?  Good.  You're going to have to work extra hard today because this week's flavor is strawberry.  And you know how mama loves her strawberry custard."  And then I eat three puffs.  And the skinny jeans go to the back of the closet.

hmm. The puffs were not hot and fresh. When i asked about more coming out of the oven the lady just stared at me. the fact that they are filled right when you order is very very cool.
I bought a dozen for friends to try at home... we all love French cream puffs. These are not the same. But...  I can see how they are addictive once you eat them just for themselves and not for the memory of something else. Everyone else eating them preferred the chocolate ones.. go figure but  vanilla was my fav and that just meant more for me (and i am a chocoholic BTW) Nonetheless I won't be going back for them too often: Levain bakery is closer to me with their scones ;-)

I wanted to feel the francophile superiority to these japana-creation creme puffs but, in fact, they are just as tasty as the freshly made deserts you can find in any "frenchy" place around town.

This is not haute pastry making, but its a totally interesting spin on deserts.

You order, they take the pre-made shell and pump it full of creme - your choice of chocolate, speciality or regular (vanilla) - and viola!  you have a cremem puff.

A very tasty treat.

Really, they get a 4.5.

Delicious!

I walked in for the first time on a Wednesday evening and was the only person in the store for about 4 minutes.  Ended up ordering a strawberry and a vanilla cream puff for just under $4.

Usually, I hate cream puffs.  I also hate eclairs or anything else with whipped cream in it (unless it's freshly whipped cream).  But these... these were SO GOOD.

Ironically, the night before I watched a Good Eats episode about choux.  Thanks Alton Brown for a lesson in how cream puffs are made!  This only made me appreciate Beard Papa's even more.

The puffs were crunchy on the outside and yet still flaky.  The custard filling had vanilla bean specks in it.  My favorite was the strawberry one.  The custard was smooth and not too sweet or rich.  The vanilla was a bit richer (and my puff in particular was slightly over-filled), but had a good taste to it.

As for the service, it was pretty good.  I ate my puffs while sitting at the back of the store and listened to some obvious tourists ask a few silly questions.  None of the employees seemed fazed by it and they were always very pleasant.  Guess they're used to it.  Also, the bathroom is pretty nice for this type of place.  And the key for it is on the cutest Beard Papa keyholder!

I probably wouldn't get the vanilla one again, because I really am not a cream puff fan.  But the strawberry ones were so good I'd get them again.  And again.
