Great independent coffee shop. Much better than Starbucks and Caribou.

City Center, Baltimore, MD
A great local business!
The coffee is well-roasted (not burnt like Starbucks) and the flavored lattés are just sweet enough (not diabetes-inducing like Caribou). I appreciate the light hand on the Torani syrups on the part of the baristas. Some think that more is better or more generous, but usually it just ruins the taste of the espresso.
The atmosphere is lively but not too loud to get some reading or work done. The baristas aren't running around and yelling like they do at some places. I've been there on a weekday afternoon and a couple evenings, and there's always plenty of seating (but not enough plugs for the many laptops needing power).
It'd be nice to have few more food items available, but otherwise, no complaints. -

I love this place - it aligns with my values to support local businesses and they introduced me to the yummy Sour Flower - a mix of lemonade and hibiscus tea, served hot.
This is a real coffee shop - there aren't booths and you order your drink by size, not 'tall or grande.'
My favorite is to get a comfy chair by the window.
Wi-fi is free but you have to ask for the daily password. Also, there isn't a great selection of sandwiches so I tend to stick with the breakfast sandwich, which they'll make anytime of the day.
Staff as always been nice and there's no pretention among other customers. -

Ok, I'll admit it... I don't like "the man". So whenever I have the hankerin' for some coffee or tea, I'd much prefer if it was coming from a place like Bean and Leaf. Now it does help that Bean and Leaf does a fantastic job serving up a great cup of tea, offering free wifi for patrons, and having very knowledgable staff! It is usually pretty quite and welcoming.
The only thing I wish they had was power outlets at every table (then again, I wish every coffee joint or restaurant had that!) and a little more seating area as it can get busy in the evening.
If you're in the area and looking for a nice place to hang out, enjoy some great coffee and tea while doing a little bit of catchup or a casual meeting. Bean and Leaf can totally be your spot! -

I just had their Santa blend, and it was unbalanced, acerbic, and simply horrid. It tasted like they just mix together in whatever beans weren't selling as well and give it a name. Sure enough, when I asked of what the Christmas blend was comprised, the barista proceeded to name about six different beans. A gourmet coffee shop should not put something like this as their house coffee for the holidays or any-days.
Nice ambiance though, so I'll give it two instead of one. -

This is my go to coffee shop. THe staff is friendly, consistent, and accomodating. internet is free, as it should be. The wood floors and eco friendly products are appropriate. A good spot! The coffee is good, and they serve Will Cole caramel corn!

I was in Bean and Leaf this weekend to meet friends. As the independent coffee house option in downtown RO, Bean and Leaf actually provides a nice alternative to the 'Bou and Starbucks. I swear every time I'm in there it's always so busy! It's like walking into a forest of hip moms with their children with trendy names, students with their faces illuminated with the soft glow of their MacBooks, and others just getting together for conversation and a cup of Joe.
The menu of Bean and Leaf is pretty diverse. They offer lots of teas and the typical fare for coffee drinks. Pricing is about on par too with the other options. I found myself deciding upon the peppermint mocha in the mid size. What was really nice was them offering it in a mug since my party was staying. I opted for the over-sized ceramic cup of magic and loved every sip. The mocha was a tad sweeter than I might typically want but for some reason it was perfect from espresso to peppermint candy topped whipped cream at the time. I was really tempted to also order a giant cookie that was on the front counter because it looked like a super Snickerdoodle. I refrained since I elected for the dessert-y coffee.
Four of us met for catch-up conversation and eventually a nostalgic game of euchre (my team so won--I don't know how, because I've not played in years?) I was really taken aback when I thought my friend Maggie K. was drinking a carton of milk at the table, but on closer investigation I realized it was a carton of water. Who knew such a thing even existed? And that it was better (or so they say.) Said carton was a bargain at $2.69 and also environmentally conscious.
I will return to Bean and Leaf. I like that there's parking in the back and that there seems to be an adequate amount of seating (though there still could be more). The fact that the coffee and tea are good and that the service is pleasant also doesn't hurt. Bean and Leaf also displays local art which is also a plus in my ledger. Music playing was a nice blend of classic rock, alternative, and singer/songwriter selections. The only drawback I have is that at the high top table we were sitting my should and elbow kept on running into their decorative wall divider thing--I probably should have had the end seat.
The men's room was decently clean though I don't think there was paper towel in stock so I had to utilize the hand dryer. And someone had crossed out part of a graffiti note that was instructing to "Listen to Brian Eno." I guess they were a hater.Listed in: HRH Oak.

I can't say enough good things about Bean & Leaf Cafe. They sell coffee, tea, and food and are always very nice and helpful. I recently had a tea party and they supplied all of the loose tea that we served to our guests and that we gave away as gifts. I am a tea fanatic and the tea is always great and they have a very good selection. The coffee is good too! If you want to support a small local business, Bean & Leaf is the way to go! I always stop in when I'm in downtown Royal Oak.

For all of the years I lived in San Francisco and have been using Yelp to find promising local businesses everywhere I go, I had yet to write a review. I recently relocated to metro Detroit and I have vowed to be more engaged in the reviewing process. The Bean & Leaf in Royal Oak has popped my Yelp review cherry.
In the few days I have lived here, I have been in search of a great location to work remotely when I want to get out of the house. Bean & Leaf is the first place I have found that has ALL of the qualities I look for in a coffee shop/workspace.
The first thing I noticed was ample parking in the back. Only 50 cents per hour? Awesome! It is a fairly large space for a coffee shop with plenty of small tables and I had no trouble finding an outlet for my trusty workhorse and to charge my phone. I like the front of the shop because it is bright and sunny. Be sure to get the WIFI password when you order. I think the quality of password protected wifi is always better since you don't have any bozos in neighboring buildings sucking up the bandwidth.
The coffee was good, and I am super picky about my coffee - just ask my boyfriend http://www.yelp.com/us....
I also noticed the wide selection in the bakery case and it looks like they serve lunch as well. I will keep that in mind.
Two hours flew by and I was super productive in the quiet by fairly bustling environment. I added another hour to my meter (it's only 50 cents!) and left after three hours. I'm not an all day coffee house squatter. I will certainly return next time I need to get out for a bit. -

Where do I start?
First, Bean & Leaf must be one of Royal Oak's best coffee shops. The brews were roasted to perfection. The tea selection is outstanding. The music selections were perfectly matched for the comfortable, laid back vibe this place offers.
With free wi-fi, Bean & Leaf is a great place to work.Listed in: Great Date Spots - Detroit/Ann…

When I worked in Royal Oak my car automatically drove me here first thing in the morning for some caffeine and to satisfy my serious Avalon Bread scone addiction (cherry walnut, please). The barista was often the first person I'd speak to -in a crackly voice -every morning, so I have lots of fond memories here.
Bean and Leaf has an amazing selection of teas and coffees. I favor Dragon Pearl Jasmine or Mint Iced Tea or French Vietnamese Au Lait when I need some serious sweet caffeinated goodness. Add wi-fi and a great soundtrack and you're golden anytime. -
Review from Laura H.
Coffee shop of choice in downtown RO. If you want a cup of joe but also feel the need to do your part to be loyal to the Royal, you gotta go here. I don't harbor hatorade for the big chain shops, but I don't think they have a place in walkable little boutique-strewn places like Royal Oak.
On the other hand, the fact that there is a Starbucks and a Caribou down the road means that it siphons away a lot of people who would otherwise be hogging the high tables and comfy chairs. I've only had seating problems once or twice when I came here, and that was when I had the gall to set foot into a coffee shop in the dead of finals period. I got what I asked for.
As far as the actual coffee goes... it's good! I tend to stick with the house blends here because it's cheaper, good and I'm boring like that, but I've heard so much ranting and raving about the Vietnamese lattes and whatnot that it intrigues me. The tea selection here is also expansive - much more expansive than what you would get at a chain coffee store, but not quite up to the level of Goldfish Tea. If you want a tea experience, you go to Goldfish. If you just want a cup of tea to drink mindlessly while doing other things, Bean and Leaf is probably the better choice.
And that's one of the best things about Bean and Leaf - the work-friendly atmosphere. There's always a little bit of background hum but it never gets overbearing, and most people are there to work, not socialize. Not to say that you can't go here with a couple of friends and have a nice chat, but it's not a boisterous atmosphere by any means.
Knocked off a star because you have to pay for parking. I know, I know, this is a Royal Oak Thing, but it annoys me. There are other nice coffee shops in Metro Detroit to work at that also have free parking - I usually only come here if I bike. -

I thought I would post a review after all these years. I moved to California about 3 years ago and still think about Bean & Leaf's selection of loose teas and their friendly atmosphere. I did most of the planning for my move right in this coffee house drinking cinnamon tea and eating bagels with cream cheese until 11, when they would close. The place was always clean and the staff was always friendly.

I went here for the first time a couple weeks ago, and my mom and I split a pot of some sort of fabulous green tea. The staff suggested that we get the same tea, order one pot to split, and save a little money. They use fresh tea leaves (not crappy bags) and let you know not leave it too long. My mom also got a carrot muffin, filled with cream cheese filling (she is a huge fan of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting) and loved it! If this place was a bit closer to home, it would totally be my Sunday morning base camp!

My favorite place in Michigan! I'm from the Bay Area and being in this cafe makes me feel like I'm home. The staff is so friendly and the tea is delicious. I'm not a coffee person, but I love their selection of fresh-brewed iced teas!! I have spent hours and hours studying here, and I haven't found a better atmosphere for working and enjoying a peaceful time.

Yelping about a coffee shop while *at* said coffee shop... I have reached a new level of snobbery. But I swear I don't feign intelligence by conversing about Hemingway or Voltaire or the existentialists...
Bean and Leaf is the typical coffee shop, with reminders to recycle and save the planet at your ten, eleven, and one o'clock. Yet repairing the 0.4 gal/min leak in their sink faucet would do more for Mother Earth than me putting my java clutch in their recycle bin versus the trash bin.
The hypocrisy of it all!
My medium ginger jasmine tea had a fine flavor, though it was so sweet, like warm juice. It almost tasted as though they had microwaved a glass of McDonald's sweet tea after dropping in a slice of raw ginger to infuse the flavor. Captain Planet would have preferred I spend that $3.85 to instead save a square foot of the Amazon from the evil paper corporations--or to repair Bean & Leaf's leaky faucet.
And my tea was only warm--not scalding. I expect tea to burn my tongue so much so that I can't taste anything for the next 18 hours. Since I was drinking my tea in-house, I was served a big white mug. But it came sans tray or saucer, making transportation to my table a delicate affair. I had to gingerly carry the heavy, filled-to-the-brim mug by its handle. Thankfully the tea wasn't scalding hot, else I'd have third-degree burns on my right hand.
But a barista saw me take out my computer, and on her own convictions, came over to offer me the wifi password. What's this?!?! Service?!?! Someone thinking about a human being other than themself?!?! In Downtown Royal Oak, that merits a bonus star. -

The Bean and Leaf is a nice place to sit and sip, to chat with chai, to talk with tea, or ruminate while you caffeinate... (sorry about all that, back to the review...)
I like the atmosphere, it's inviting without being cloying, uses the recycle shtick while not devolving into hippydom and has the usual forest of laptop screens glowing day and night. Probably a result of the free wi-fi and general work-a-day atmosphere of the place. This isn't a lounge on a sofa kind of coffee shop, it's more table-and-chairs and thus doesn't seem to have created the atmosphere of hipster regulars and unwelcome invaders (you) interrupting their never ending narrative on russian poetry and internet porn.
So relax, fair coffee/tea drinker, and enjoy your morally-superior coffee (free trade) in the comfortable knowledge that it is highly unlikely that anyone will actually talk to you while you are here. They're too busy tweeting, or facebooking, or yelping about the Bean and Leaf. -

Scooted into this place today for a chat and a cup. I wasn't disappointed.
I like the fact that there are at least a few places in Royal Oak that are quiet and have free WiFi. The idea of Starbucks charging for their WiFi just disgusts me. Then again, so does Starbucks in general.
The WEP password for the WiFi cracks me up. I hope they turn it into a schtick every week that they change it. Next worker to make "cheese fish" the password will certainly get a tip!
I've heard that this place can get a little rowdy, but I saw no evidence of that. It's certainly quieter than Caribou. In fact, it seemed like we were the only people talking in the place. When I'm in town and need to study or want to read, this would be an awesome place for it.
I actually liked their coffee. I agree, theirs is a bit more expensive than I'm used to, but we're talking pocket change. A large steamer flavored for $3.25. House coffee is what, $2? I'll pay that for peace and quiet WITHOUT coffee.
There were at least 10 people on Mac laptops (not including myself), which struck me as odd. It's that sort of place.
No smoking, no hookahs. Lots of Kashi. Mostly high-backed wooden chairs, and possibly one couch. Keep that in mind.
My second-favorite coffee house in Royal Oak.Listed in: Java Junkies of Detroit Unite!

This is a pretty average coffee shop place, I think they all the same interior designer. It was nice, the hot chocolate was decent. I still hate paying for parking at Royal Oak, not their fault though. Nothing really superb though.

I guess this would be what you get if Starbucks hooked up for a local Detroit groupie while it was in town on tour. Great little place, you can enter through the front on Main St. or the back. Other Yelper's have it right, probably was awesome back in its day when it was a quiet place to go and meet up with friends but it seems like it's lost much of its character. The bagels were pretty good, didn't try much else.
Great alternative if you don't want to go to Starbucks (didn't hear a blender the whole time I was there). -

My corner coffee shop and my hands down favorite. Friendly staff, varitey of seating options, and lots of beverage options. Free wifi makes it my go to spot when meeting people to work on a project.
I typically pick up mint tea or a floral tea (cold). In the summer, I recommend that you sit outside and have an espresso - being on the corner of 11 & Main provides great people watching. I also love their caramel hot apple cider drink in the fall/winter - warms you right up.
They also have a cool new(er) product: Boxed Water. Just like bottled, but in more sustainable (and nicely designed) packaging. -
Review from Julia K.
Maybe Michigan is growing on me, but with places like the Bean and Leaf, why wouldn't it? This place is everything I dig about the lowkey, friendly life here in the Motor City burbs.
I review based on my motto stolen from the Army of "Be All that you Can Be" and not some fancy pants "5 stars means they put the napkin on my lap". So to me, this place rocks as a coffee shop. Why?
+ 1 Star - Free Wifi. As it should be, with 3 (!!) different wifi servers to pick from (password protected) the day that I came. That makes for pretty speedy internet as long as someone's not downloading Saudi pr0n.
+ 1 Star - Daily Special(s). I got me a jumbo coffee latte with ice - perfect on a humid hot day, for $2. During prime time! Love them specials.
+ 1 Star - Clean Loo. Can't tell you how freaked out a nasty toilet room makes me. This one was a one-holer but clean and well stocked.
+ 1 Star - The Nice Servers. Serving java to arseholes who want "skinny-half-no-foam-whipped-decaf-free trade-no sleeve" must make you want to strangle. But here, both counter helpers I encountered were patient, smiled, and even laughed at my dumb puns.
+ 1 Star / - 1 Star - Seating. Ouch those wood chairs. But oh, the cushy club chairs. So it depends how you roll.
I didn't try the pastries as I was holding out for the tasty dindin at Little Tree across the street. But this place will be on my circuit of Royal Oaks must-do's for the rest of eternity! -

Oak Park, MI
Downtown Royal Oak, the land of salons and bars, yet surprisingly, there aren't too many coffee shops around. At least not that I know of anyway.
One choice you have is Bean And Leaf, which is considerably better than the main alternative in the area *coughStarsuckscough* (easily the single worst black coffee I've ever had the misfortune of drinking), but it's still nothing which makes me say "Wow, this is a really great cup of coffee!".
The tea is decent, but it's not up to par with Goldfish.
Definitely not a place I'd go to just for the drinks. But it's better if you're with a group of friends who might not share your tastes, or you want another alternative for a place to study with free wifi (I think it's free, I've never used it, and it is pretty busy and loud in here, so concentration might be difficult). -

This is one of my favorite places to hang out in Royal Oak!
I take many of my friends here for grab some tea (not really a coffee drinker). The internet is FREE, which is great. I gladly pay a bit more for something good to eat and drink for a quiet, clean, and friendly place to sit to read, work or just think about nothing.
Another great thing about Bean and Leaf is the artwork on the walls! I love it, and if I had the money I would buy numerous pieces from their walls and put them on mine.
Finally the baristas actually know what they are doing, and don't mind giving you their opinion, which I enjoy. They actually know how to use the machines in the cafe and I think they take pride in what they do, and I support that anywhere. -

Chicago, IL
Great hours, great coffee, great study atmosphere.
Phenomenal atmosphere. No one bothers you while you're here. Enough said.
This is seriously the best place to study if you're in some sort of professional school (Mainly business, law and medical students go here to escape noisy undergrads or dreary libraries).
The place is sunny and cheerful with free wi-fi. Also, if you're pulling a ten hour study marathon, this is the best place to do that. There are plenty of quick, healthy places to eat nearby, and the street that it's on is trendy, cheerful, and upbeat if you want to go for a walk or a run.
There's a yoga studio next door that's also convenient.
This place makes finals week more of a holistic retreat than being surrounded by sleep deprived, stressed out students crunching on fritos and chugging mountain dew.
Note: you have to ask for the internet password when you order something -

Full disclosure: I am a high table enthusiast. Something about that kind of altitude can make even the most useless facebook session feel a little more productive.
The staff here is very friendly. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, clean without being sterile. They have a really nice selection of teas and sell Avalon baked goods. I always want my lattes to pack a little more punch, but I feel that way about all metro D espresso beverages. By far my favorite place to get work done in the area. -

This is the only place I go for coffee in Royal Oak. I've been going since it first opened as "Sweetwaters". Service is always good and the coffee is always great. Is there anything else that needs to be said about a coffee shop?
Oh well I suppose a relaxed atmosphere, being open late, and free wifi should be mentioned.
As for actual food I can't say I've had much of it, but their lemon squares are very good regardless of where they come from.
The space is fairly large, so I wouldn't hesitate to bring small children as there are places to store your stroller or car seat. -

When I asked around as to what was the most recommended coffee shop in Royal Oak I got the Bean and Leaf. So of course I had to check it out, recommendations aren't just for nothing!
I was surprised to see it looked just like Sweetwaters inside, but not so surprised when I heard it used to be. I expected good coffee cause of that fact though. And the coffee is good, I had a soy latte. Tasty, I forgot to ask what brand of soy milk they use.
Good selection of pastries and desserts like Sweetwaters. And a good place for studying, working, small talk. If you have been to Sweetwaters in Ann Arbor you know what to expect. I just expected something that I was not familiar to, hence the let down. -
Review from chris m.
When I'm at home, I work from this place. Not so much so people will notice me working at a coffee shop, but because I'll watch television if I stay home. Prices are about the same as the corporate shops, but this has a really good atmosphere and the staff are really great. The music, free internet, and photos for sale on the wall are all a plus. At the end of the day even if this were a starbucks-the staff make it worth coming here.
It does tend to get busy in the afternoon but mornings aren't bad. -

Four rating still stands, but I just had to say that they are awesome for making me a Havana latte that I've previously only had at La Grande Orange. It was 80% as good, and that was worth a huge tip. Bean and Leaf will forever be my fave for making this for me!

Love this place, and all that it is about.
My family and I like to have coffee "dates" once a week. Our son loves Tea's- and we prefer a nice latte.
They have great products. Carry Avalon bakery goods!!! Best of all, they care about the environment. They use recycled products. I wish more establishments would be this conscientious.
Outdoor seating. Supports local artists.
Moral of the story here;
We always choose Bean and Leaf for our weekly coffee dates. -

Better than Starbucks or any other coffee shop and they have vegan options! Bean and Leaf café is a very neat café located off of Main Street in Royal Oaks, the inside is great, cozy, and has lots of cool artwork. Staff was friendly and best of all, the product was great! I will surely return during my next visit.

I can't help it. I like this place. Maybe because it's not granola crunchy, but more arugula crunchy.
I like the vast selection of drinks they have, including their loose leaf teas. But the other stuff they sell, my god, is so expensive. They were selling a handful of M&Ms for $2.50!
Recycling, comfortable and plenty of seating, no bums, good lighting, and free internet. What's not to like?
Note: you have to ask for the router password from the barista, they change it about once a week. -

With coffeeshops popping up like weeds, it gets difficult at times to have a discerning eye, or taste buds, but Royal Oak's Bean and Leaf offers something unique and special to locals.
At first, I was a bit heartbroken when I had seen that Sweetwater Cafe was morphing into the Bean and Leaf, but after my first visit I became a fan.
The Bean and Leaf Cafe prides itself in providing its customers with not only the best selection of free trade coffees, but an expansive medley of fragrant loose teas. It's funny, because as horribly addicted as I am to a cup or twelve of Joe, I always find myself coming in for a spot of tea. The Jasmine Lemon is like a citrusy sweet bouquet of flowers in your mouth, the pomegranate black tea is a hearty and clean tasting. The choices are endless and always scrumptious.
The Bean and Leaf Cafe also offers goodies to nosh on while you're using their free WI-FI. The vegan chili and cookies are deceptively amazing, and the cakes and cookies always leave me smiling.
As sad as I was to see Sweetwater Cafe fade away,I'm just as happy to see the Bean and Leaf blooming, especially in a garden being attack with corporate coffeehouses. -
Review from Parisa K.

When this place changed it's name, I wasn't too happy because I liked the name Sweetwaters more than Bean and Leaf. For the most part, though, not much else has changed. They still have really good drinks and some desserts. Now I was always a HUGE fan of the apricot rugalah (sp?), which Sweetwaters regularly had but Bean and Leaf does not carry. They do have some other good looking sweets, but I still miss my favorite.
My one gripe with this place is they don't offer free refills. Going there to study for several hours on end day after day, free refills definitely are important. They do have free internet (that isn't annoying to deal with), so it's sort of a trade off. But if you are just going to relax and have something to drink or two, then you'll find this place quaint and enjoyable, no gripes attached.
