You'll think I'm crazy, but I love hiking this place at night in the winter. Yeah, it's usually pitch dark and slippery from the rain, which can be a treacherous combination. But that's what the handrails and not being a reckless idiot are for!
It's well worth the lovely views from the top and the south face. The path is well-maintained, so it's not as sketchy for a night hike as you might think, anyway. Oh, and these conditions guarantee that there will not be crowds, although you might run into me and my hiking partner. Also, partway up there's a gate that is locks after a certain hour, so get in before then (hence doing it in the winter).
Now to go back in daylight and see what the places really looks like!Listed in: The Greatest Outdoors

I am officially in love with the Beacon Rock hike. My boyfriend and I drove out from Portland for a little day hike. It was dry, but cloudy and around 60 degrees, so the perfect day for a nice jaunt to the gorge.
We went on a Sunday, which could be a nightmare on a sunny weekend. (Crowded) We lucked out, there was very little traffic on the trails, and only had to stop to let people pass a couple of times.
For the age of the trails and the park itself, it's amazing to see how high one can climb in just a short amount of time. The back and forth up the cliff on the bridges is amazing, and the view spectacular. Some of the most impressive photo opportunities I've had in some time, and I can't wait for a day when it's sunny and all in full bloom! Definitely will put this on the list of hikes to do multiple times throughout the year. -

Great view from atop of the rock to be had. And to think it's the remnants of the inside of an old volcano. The views (and the hike up to the top) blow Multnomah Falls away. If you're heading up to to the top, it's only a mile up and a mile back. When we went up there was even a friendly chipmunk who was definitely not afraid of people.
There are also other other trails to be hiked, but I haven't had the pleasure to experience them. Technical climbing can also be done, as well as camping. It's really a great place to see and experience the Gorge with generally less people than Multnomah Falls. Something for everyone! -

Ahh. Beacon Rock. Picturesque, well maintained, big parking lot, and crowded.
But hey, when nature is this beautiful you have to share it.
