Review Highlights
The food is okay. It's not great, but it's not horrible. Prices are reasonable and they have a good early dinner special.
It's just convenient to have a decent pizza place nearby.
Not much seating, but they never looking terribly busy so I don't think that is a concern.
How the mighty have fallen!
I've lived in playa for 12 years and beach pizza was the first place I ate when I moved in. It used to be so yummy and friendly. For the last year and a half the quality of the pizza has gone down hill and so have the service. I been in denial about the decline, but tonight is the last straw.
First the pie: The crust used to be a very chewy and sweet, now it is just dry and flavorless. Toppings, cheese and sauce used to be good as well, now they seem to skimp on the toppings. All of this results in a dry tasteless pie!
Second the service: For a local joint, they are worse than pizza hut! Tonight they over charged me by over 2 dollars, the amount isn't a big deal, but the way they handled it was!
I pointed out the error to the cashier, who first denied it, then when I did the math for her, she rolled her eye and handed it to the "manager". After explaining the situation to him, he spent several minutes on the calculator, then replied rudely, "what! are your arguing over 50 cents!" Then he tried to hand me 2 quarters!
Again, it is not the amount. When as a business, you over-charge a customer, you do not have the right to have an attitude! Also, you don't get to guess at what the over-charged amount was and become upset. These are very basic concepts of running a business! For 2 bucks they've pissed off a customer of a dozen years!
Long story short, what used to be great pizza and friendly service, is now dry, tasteless pie served by rude, thoughtless people. How the mighty have fallen!
What Happened Here??
When I first moved to PDR, I tried this place and it wasn't bad. I'd say 'good, but not amazing.' Then a few months later I got a 'za from them and it was worse; dry, not much flavor, dough too chewy. And......a few months later I gambled on another pizza and this time it was even worse, like a natural, gradual progression (or should I say 'decline') from 'ok' to 'bad'.
For this area, stick to Hank's Pizza or Vinny's Pizza.
I just moved within walking distance of BP and while taking a break from breaking down boxes and dragging them to the dumpster, we decided to stop in for lunch.
For context, I'm from the northeast and grew up eating NYC and New Haven pizza, so I like it thin, foldable, and for me, it's all about three things: crust, sauce, and cheese.
The pizza came out quickly. We ordered a small Del Rey (sundried tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, mushrooms) and were really impressed. I picked up a slice and was able to fold it. Yay. It wasn't soggy and didn't flop over limply like so much SoCal pizza. Yay. It wasn't smothered in 45 pounds of toppings. Yay. It wasn't thick and doughy. Yay.
Taste was really good. The sauce was a little sweeter than I expected but that balanced nicely with the flavor of the sundried tomatoes. Right amounts of cheese and sauce, not too much of the toppings, and good crust texture. All the toppings tastes nice and fresh, particularly the garlic.
We also had an antipasto salad, which came chopped, well balanced, and undressed. I thought the greens were a little lame but the flavors and balance were really good. We took home half of the salad and pizza each.
I also noticed that they bake (not fry) everything including wings and mozzerella sticks. I'd be interested to try that (even though both of those items are already fried from the factory...)
Prices were a little steep at $14.50 for a small pizza, and the service was just okay, but it's a small price to pay for good pizza. We'll be back.
This is a small pizza restaurant in a nondescript strip mall in Playa Del Rey.
The menu has a surprising number of specialty pizzas including a mushroom-sun dried tomato-eggplant pizza and offers pesto or alfredo sauce options.
They produce a genuine thin crust New York style pizza that is among the thinnest I have ever eaten. The toppings are good and go together well but do not come together in the refined way that I have experienced at Two Boots or Abbott's Pizza. Overall and excellent pizza and definitely the best that I have had in the immediate area, although just 5 miles north is Abbott's Pizza...
Decent Za, but nothing spectacular. My problem with this place is the delivery. I almost never go out and sit down at a pizza place and when they deliver:
1. ALWAYS takes longer than they say. Not a big deal but irritating.
2. Have a delivery charge regardless of what you spend. I've called them out on this and its part of their policy and wont budge.
Mid-level pizza (not on par with the Manhattan Beach Pizza which is excellent), slow service and you can expect your bill to be about $5-6 more than what you think it should be every single time.
With Hanks and Vinny's right in the area too, there's really just no reason to go here.*
* Exception - Their buffalo strips and fries plate is very good even for a wing buff like myself who usually turns up his nose at boneless wings. :)
Beach Pizza is a decent, local place to get a pizza when the mood strikes. Their pizza is pretty good for a small place - thin crusts with decent sauce.
For me, though, the thing that makes a really good pizza is the dough, and their dough is unremarkable. Not great, not bad, just something to hold the sauce off the pan. :)
I've also had their spaghetti there - they do a reasonable version of this too, with generous meatballs.
Food: Good quality pizza and food. Not remarkable, but not overly-greasy. Sadly they don't sell by the slice though. :(
Service: Quick local-pizza-shop service. Friendly help, and they'll bring it to you if you are eating in.
Value: Reasonable for a pizza shop.
Ambiance: There's a small eating area, with some beach-themed paintings on the wall. Funky!
Bottom line:
I'd go again if I was in the mood for some pizza or a quick plate of carbs (spaghetti).
I would rate this a 3.5 rating. I like this place because they are:
1. Super flexible of what you want to put together a pizza and they come out good.
2. Walking distance and price is fair. Plenty of parking :)
3. Crust is tasty good.
4. Sauce is pretty earthy and just good.
5. Variety of food to choose from.
What I don't like:
1. The wait can too long for your hungry tummy, but thank GOD they are next to Blockbuster, Liquor store, etc.
2. The decor is so not appealing and usually I just order my stuff for takeout.
3. Ingredient can be improved....but not bad for the bucks.
Dig this --
fresh, thin, crispy pizza dough - done juuuuust right!
yummy tasty sauce
not too heavy on the cheeeez -- delissshhheeussly right!
fresh mushrooms scattered on top -- delectable!
Yay - it's just a hop, skip and away from me :)
Boo -- for my buddha belly :(
Allegedly ranked one of the top 100 pizza places in the nation... I don't know if this is the best pizza I ever had but its pretty dam good. Try the Thai chicken pizza or the buffalo chicken pizza. Both are a refreshing change from the plebian pepperoni pie. I would give this place a 5 star but it's kind of pricey. Worth trying though.
Pizza was sub-par and expensive. Pastrami sandwich was fatty and ingredients were left off... Would not return.
After coming back from a trip to NYC, I've been in search for a place that does pizza with the same crust flavor as the stuff w/ NYC... perfect chewiness... slight crisp.... good flavor....
I had ordered from Beach Pizza in the past... maybe 8-9 years ago now. I knew it was great... but after hitting up NYC and loving the crust made with soft water, I found my West Coast Connection..
My wife ordered a 1/2 Buffalo Chicken, 1/2 Popeye and Olive Oil... it was fantastic. A place that actually does 1/2 and 1/2 with different sauces... imagine that! Do what the customer wants!!
The ingredients were good... the flavor top notch.... after driving it home from Playa to Santa Monica, it still tasted fantastic... perfect meal with the Guillermo del Toro movie that night (The Orphanage).
My favorite pizza joint in LA was Bo-Jays... closed down in 1998... haven't found a favorite since... and here I rediscovered it again this weekend....
The pizza is good--thin crust with good toppings. The place also offers salads, pastas, sandwiches, and calzones--but none of them are anything special. The service is friendly. Prices are fine. This is part of the same chain that has a location in Manhattan Beach. For dining options, you can order it to go, get it delivered, or dine-in. Alcohol is also served.
My favorite pizza in LA. They have so many unique and awesome flavors, and a crust that is to die for. CPK like attitude towards speciality pizzas but much more affordable. Great coupons as well and just overall a great place!
I'm really glad I decided to spend a couple extra bucks here instead of on Domino's, because their pizza was very good.
Their chicken wings, however, must have come from the most like anorexic, abused chickens from the chicken outcast farm, because the BBQ-style wings (6 for $4.50 seemed like such a good deal) were probably small enough to fit in a premature baby's hand. Total rip! I mean they sure were tasty, but honestly, could they be any skimpier?
So if you want to try these extremely tasty yet teeny chicken wings, up the anty and go for the large size for like $6.75 or something.
Pizza was great though, we had the Manhattan Man and I really liked it. I liked the mushrooms they put on it. And the crust was really good... rather thin, kind of how I like it.
Also, the chick at the counter was wearing a cool Darth Vader shirt so I had to appreciate that. I would also appreciate it if they would advertise some coupons in the Monthly Mailers. Thanks.
Is it just me? I feel like the food is not very good here. OK, I guess I can only speak for the pizza, but "meh" is the only word that comes to mind when I think of it.
Best pizza I've found in the Playa/Marina area, and I've been trying lots of different places for the past 5 years. Give it a try!
Let's start by addressing my geography-based prejudices about pizza.
I'm from the East Coast. We have the best pizza that isn't deep dish. I know how it's supposed to taste, so I'm disappointed when it doesn't taste that way, and I'm unwilling to settle.
That being said, this is a decent pizza - the sauce and cheese are good, and most importantly, the dough is excellent. They may be a bit more expensive than Domino's or Papa John's, but it's well worth it to eat a superior pizza. Also, the Buffalo Wings, although small, are really tasty.
The delivery service is good, and preferable to eating there - not much room.
Kickass pizza, solid wings, and reasonable beer prices. Their crusts are chewy and a great texture. Consider Beach Pizza one of those gems you will find in life.. One caveat: dont sit in the restaurant anywhere close to closing time: the ammonia smell from them cleaning the kitchen ruins the taste of their awesome pizza.
UPDATE: Down to 3 stars. I was in the place at 6pm the last time I went and again, someone cleaning the bathrooms creates a wafting smell of ammonia throughout the small restaurant. That and the quality of the pizza has definitely decreased lately. Oh, and the waitress decided to wait 10 minutes to bring out my beer when we were 1 of 2 parties in the place and the other party was already eating. The owner of the place needs to start cracking down - this place is losing its "gem" status.
Toss up for me when it comes to this place and Vinny's. Both to me are great pizza delivery.
I do like Beach a little bit better. Very big pizza portions for your buck.
A little heavy on the sauce and sometimes not enough cheese to balance it out. The meat is good quality and choices for toppings is good. Beach, is great for that basic pizza in the neighborhood weekend night dinner!
Best pizza in PDR by far. It's fluffy, it's greasy, and with a side of garlic cheese bread and a beer you are set for any night of the week. They deliver which is a plus, but if you have a mad craving be sure to pick up.
There is also a great lunch special if you can swing.
True Story: my old roommate would order 2 full pizzas to eat for a few days. He's now in therapy for Beach Pizza addiction.
I live in the neighborhood, so I always walk here to order a pizza, and peruse Blockbuster before coming back to pick up my order. It's convenient and the people there are nice.
However, like others have said, the pizza is okay, but not amazing. I do like the crust and the variety of pizzas though. Besides pizza, I have tried the wings (the spice was good, but it was a teeny bit on the dry side) and the tuna melt (it was yummy).
Although the service here is generally reliable, sometimes they can't stay on top of things.
Example 1: I was told that the flyer-menu I had was outdated; the guy wanted to give me a current one, but he couldn't find any current ones at the counter!
Example 2: The small packs of blue cheese sauce they included with an order of wings tasted really nasty. I looked at the date on the package, and realized that they had expired by about two weeks.
Delicious! I'll go pick it up insead of wait for delivery, which can take some time. I assume because the pizza is so good, and definitely the best in PDR.
Their menu is full with interesting types of pizza, but even just a plain cheese is good. They have a yummy sauce.
Damn Good Pizza. I've since moved to Burbank, but have kept my Beach Pizza magnet on my fridge, the better to gaze mournfully at it when I want pizza and know that it simply won't be as good as Beach Pizza.
This place has it all: great crust, great sauce, superbly fresh toppings.
There's really nothing more to say. This is a great place with great pizza. If they serve other food, I don't know about it. But the pizza is great.
Did I mention? They have great pizza.
The pizza here is pretty good. Like the other reviewers said you get a lot of tasty toppings and the crust is very tasty. Not cardboardy like some of the other local establishments.
The service used to suck, but it's improved dramatically. Whenever I call an order in the girl who answers the phone is very nice and helpful.
The food here isn't fancy, but it's always fresh and tasty. What else could you ask for?
I don't like pizza, but I will eat pizza here.
I like this pizza and everyone that works here is nice and friendly. Call ahead and pick it up as delivery can take awhile. I love all their pizza, but I didn't love the BBQ chicken pizza. Crust is great-salads are good. Go next doorish and get some beer at the corner liquor store. They have a great selection. Can't beat it if you live in the area.
Beach Pizza is aight...it's cheap and easy. The pizza's no that great but it get the job done. They used to have a special - medium cheese for $5. Good for take out. It's also conviently located next to Blockbuster - Pizza and a movie.
Beach Pizza is my new favorite pizza place. I will willingly drive to pick up their pizza rather than wait for delivery from Papa Johns or its ilk.
The crust is crunchy, but soft inside and, in my opinion, close to perfection. Beach Pizza doesn't scrimp on the toppings either. In other words, its Pizza. Darn good pizza. I am off to pick it up now. Good eatin'....
So so good. I've never dined in but they have quick delivery and really yummy food. Everything we've ordered is delicious but as a vegetarian, you can't go wrong with the vegetarian pizza or any options, really.
The pizza is just okay, but this place is a rip off. If you don't get the special during the day, a tiny mediocre pizza will cost you a lot of money. This place is not consistent and not worth it.
I was here a few days ago and loved the sausage, pepperoni, onion sandwich. Very filling and a great value. The ingredients are fresh and plenty of toppings are provided. I didn't have any pizza but I definitely will next time - they look delicious!
