I recently planned an executive off-site at the Beach House Hotel in Half Moon Bay.  What a great place and very reasonable prices.  The staff was stellar and the catering was very good.  All my requests were promptly met.

If you do stay here, make sure you get a room on the ocean side and not the roadside.  It is right off Hwy 1 so it can be a bit noisy.  It's a pretty nice place for quick weekend get away too.

So I was planning a small vacation back in Oct. 2007 but wasn't sure if I could because of jury duty, but as soon as I was dismissed, I booked a room here for one night.  It was a bit pricey but once I got up to my room, I saw my money was worth it.  My room on the end of the second floor was the first time I had something better than a standard hotel room.  It was like a little studio apartment (had I known that, I would've brought my own groceries), with 2 TVs, stereo system, 2-burner stove, large bathroom - disappointed that it was just a regular tub but didn't care since I had everything to myself.  Bubble bath!

I wish I could've stayed longer during my mini vacation but their availability only allowed me one night.  Downside is there is no room service (again, if I knew I was gonna get a good room, I would've cooked dinner myself instead of driving to Round Table and bringing back a pizza, but that's ok, at least there are options around the hotel), and my room had some kind of noise coming from the ceiling by the door...was there a woodpecker caught in there or something?

It was very relaxing though, I loved it.

It felt like I just died and went to heaven! In all seriousness, I've never seen such a hotel so extravagent, so exquisite....I'm completely out of words. It's so clean and elegant. The staff are very helpful as well. They provide you with a list of restaurants nearby. My room had a very good view. Very big with a balcony. It's a place for honeymoon! When my bf took me here, it's like I fell in love with him all over again and the place. I didn't want to leave, I didn't even want to sleep cus I want to take it all in. Well furnished and the interior decorations was phenomenal! I would definitely keep going back to this place. Nice little getaway from the everyday hustle and bustle in the city.
It's a little bit pricey though but it's so worth it!

We came here to spend a few quiet days by the ocean and what a nice treat! Since it was the off season, we were upgraded to the Penthouse Ocean View from the Ocean View for free!  Always ask folks for an upgrade!  Keep in mind that 75% of the hotel suites offer an ocean view.

Our Penthouse Ocean View suite was the top floor of the hotel.  It is like a beach cottage comprising of separate bedroom and living areas, fireplace, balcony (patio if you are on the first floor), wet bar and full sink, microwave, refrigerator, five disc CD stereo and free wireless Internet access.  In the penthouse ocean view suite, there were two flat screen televisions with cable channels (one in the bedroom and the other in the living room).

After putting our luggage away, I threw open the windows and let the ocean scent waft inward.  The ocean below was like glass...smooth and calming.  There were some surfers sitting on their boards nearby waiting for that wave that most likely wouldn't arrive that day.

There is complimentary continental breakfast for all guests as well as complimentary wine and cheese reception for Friday and Saturday evenings.  Free parking is available as well.  The concierge service desk will help you with information regarding local restaurants and activities nearby.  The gals working during our stay were very helpful.

On our last day here, we spent a lazy morning watching the Presidential Inauguration whereupon a former junior senator from Illinois become our new president.  I remember that morning like it was just yesterday, the sun was shining bright, the sky was a gorgeous carnelian blue and there was a slight breeze....overall great weather to celebrate our nation's new beginnings....

Don't stay anywhere else in Half Moon Bay, stay here.  Yes you are going to spend some cash to do so but you will not be disappointed.  I have stayed here many times with my then fiancee and now husband.  We stayed in the Half Moon Suite our wedding weekend and boy oh boy is that a great room!  The views are spectacular, the staff courteous, breakfast are good (though use it for a starter to hold you over and then go have brunch at one of the fabulous nearby restaurants) and if you like to hide away this is definitely the spot.

I spend 4 days here on a business retreat. First off my company is amazing for having a business trip in Half Moon Bay.

Everything about this place is nice. I went at the end of October and it was really cold there, but they had the fireplaces going to keep it warm and cozy.

The rooms are not really rooms, but really really nice suites. The bed was so comfortable, I have never slept so well! All bathroom products were Aveda, which was amazing (although it took me a while to appreciate the minty freshness in my hair). My room was on the first floor and my balcony backed up to the parking lot, but it was interesting because when I was outside, I felt very secluded.

The conference rooms are huge, with amazing views that made me want to drool and zone out in the middle of a meeting. They had a porch area with views of the beach that included a fire pit. Totally awesome. They have a deal with a caterer, who cooked amazing food everyday for us. Some of the best soups I have ever eaten!

The staff was as helpful as they could be. The biggest problem there was with the wireless internet constantly breaking down and when I went to ask for an ethernet cable, I went back to my room and realized there wasn't a jack that the cable would fit in. A little frustrating...

Overall, I would actually go back and stay if I ever wanted to get away from the craziness of the city. They have enough amenities to make you feel pampered and loved, and it is close to many restaurants, you have so many options!

This is a great romantic getaway in the bay area backyard. I surprised my guy with a night here for his birthday and it couldn't have worked out nicer. Their check in's aren't very early, so we had brunch before heading up there and once we got to Half Moon Bay we walked some of the bike path that runs along the coast (which passes right in front of the hotel).

At check when my boyfriend was sitting by the fireplace they quietly told me (so that he wouldn't overhear) that they had not yet put the champagne that we were suppose to have in the room yet, and did we want it delivered now or while we were away at dinner. I told them that I would give them a call when we were leaving for dinner and they said that they would set it up about an hour after my call so that the ice in the bucket would not have melted yet when we arrive back. Perfect! And it worked out beautifully.

We went out to their pool and hot tub area using our comfy robes that had been provided for us and while the pool is very small and nothing special, we were there for the hot tub. It could have used a cleaning, it was fairly windy, and as the hotel is right on the beach, some sand had collected in it. But it was a pretty spacious tub, so even if there is another couple in there (which there normally wasn't) you don't feel like you are sitting on top of them.

Then we got dressed and went out to dinner. When we came back the champagne was on our table nice and cold just as promised. Yay! We had picked up a couple extra duraflame logs so we wouldn't have to keep going back down to reception to pick them up and lit one up. We had our champagne and the dessert we brought back from the restaurant out on our balcony overlooking the water which was lit up by the moon. Good times...

We had the Romance Package, so we were able to stay for a late check out, and it was nice being able to sleep in in the nice comfy bed and get ready to go in a leisurely fashion. We even had time to hit up the hot tub one more time.

The staff couldn't have been nicer, the room was beautiful, and the price was decent. We will definitely be back for another romantic stay when the occasion calls for it.

Mom, sis & I go away for beach girls' weekends a couple of times a year, usually to Cambria.  This time we decided to try something new and found this place...BIG mistake!
The room is large and nicely decorated, and, like others have said more like an efficiency apartment, which is nice.  But in late August, we walked in to a stuffy, hot room.  Before going to dinner we adjusted the temperature, we thought, hoping to come back to a cooler room.  However, when we got back, it was no cooler; and a call to the front desk told us, well there's no AC, just open your sliding glass door and there's a small fan in your closet....:?! No AC?  Ok I live in CA and I know the coast is usually cool, but I also think having AC is like having towels and carpet!!!  We opened up but unfortunately, not all the windows open, which means we there was no cross-breeze at all.  We slept with the windows open, tho it was still uncomfortably hot, and the worst part then was that the traffic noise was INSANE!  I didn't realize Highway 1 was a major thoroughfare, but it is...geez louise.  We could hardly carry on a conversation,,...SERIOUSLY.
From our 3rd floor room, our balcony overlooks the pool, hot tub, AND the local RV park...woohoo...nice view!!!
We'd booked for 3, and were charged extra, but we still had to call for another robe and set of towels.
No restaurants onsite as mentioned, tho the next door Sam's Fish place was delightful.
Needless to say, next time we'll go back to Cambria!!!

Pros:
Nice, comfy rooms.
Friendly people.
Decent price.
Quiet.
Romantic.
No maid questioned our DO NOT DISTURB sign

Cons:
No air conditing. We were on the first floor, and didn't really want to leave our windows or sliding door open.

The wood burning fireplace (as advertised) was outfitted with...Duraflames. Wow. Not really what we imagined.

No room service. Of course, no mention of that is made in the advertising. We stayed here on part of our honeymoon, so that was a REAL bummer.

Boring bathtub. The "whirlpool tub" was a regular tub with a few jets.

No cleaning service for the rooms in the evening. We wanted fresh sheets and towels one evening (like, 5 or 6 pm), and the guy at the front desk had to drop them off. We made our own bed when we returned.

All in all it was nice. I think if we return we would just ask to stay on the second floor. The "natural sea breeze" they wanted us to take advantage of wasn't that great as a first-floor guest.

But, it was beautiful, clean, spacious, and quiet. I personally am a bigger fan of the Ritz Carlton HMB. :)

In terms of value for money, I love the Beach House.  However, I don't tend to use it as a romantic getaway, but instead as a great place for corporate off-site meetings.

It blows the doors of the nearby Ritz Carlton in terms of price/performance.  The rooms are very nice -- every one I've been in over the years, I'd call a mini-suite.

You can walk next door to Sam's Chowder House, which I quite like, for lunch or dinner.  And you can easily walk along the paved trail to the little port of Princeton by the Sea.  If you desire you can then cross Highway 1 at the light and walk over to Cafe Gibraltar.

When you have a catered business meeting the food is very good.  (Just beware the omnipresent bees outside).  Far as I can tell, when you're not there for a catered business meeting, there is no food whatsoever.

So don't think of this place like a hotel -- there's no restaurant and no room service.  Think of it more like a B&B.  (The rooms all have mini-kitchens and refrigerators so just bring your own whatever.)

I got married in Half Moon Bay, and my husband booked us two rooms at Beach House (one for us, one for his mom, both for getting ready in).

As mentioned below, the room is more like an efficiency apartment than a luxury hotel. The bed was large and comfy, and there was a spacious room with the fireplace and a large table, which was great for hair and makeup people. The bathroom was large and we had utensils and a small kitchenette. All of that was appreciated.

Our mom's room, though, was weird. I guess they gave her the handicapped room, because everything was really low to the ground, so we couldn't even hang up her dress (and it was on the SECOND floor, puzzlingly). She had a great view of the parking lot, which meant that the balcony doors and shades had to be shut for modesty. At least the Wi-Fi worked in her room, which it didn't in ours (there is dial up, but seriously, DIAL-UP?).

We had the foggy ocean and were too busy to explore their walking trails and hot tub, so I can't comment on that. And even though the whole crew gathered in the lobby during wine and cheese hour (on our way out), we couldn't find it on any of the three days we were there. Also, the breakfast pastries were sub-par, and a different guest picked all the blueberries out of the mixed fruit bowl to eat for herself - in the lobby (no shame!). You can get yourself a better breakfast for $3 at the nearby Safeway, so bring your own.

All in all it was good for us to have so much room to get ready, but the second room was so bad (and the Wi-Fi so disappointing) that the highest we can give it is 3 stars.

We got there right at our 3pm check in, only our room wasn't ready.  We waited...and waited...and waited.  The room was ready at 4pm.  I was extremely restless and unhappy.  The staff knew and always remained as courteous as they could be.

When we were finally able to get to our room, I was very relieved and happy to see it was clean and spacious.  I also liked that they carried Aveda products.

It was also nice that they offer wine and cheese events during the afternoon.  Breakfast was ok, just fruit and pastries.

Needing to get away from work without being able to get away from work, I thought I would book a quiet, romantic place on the beach with an ocean view in Half Moon Bay.

Pros: the commute is so very convenient from my Mountain View pad, it was nice to be in my room in less than an hour. The rooms are large and I even sprang for the "penthouse room" (aka. third floor with the other eleven penthouses). Small kitchenette had basic kitchen wares and gadgets which came in handy for the bottle of wine, cheese and crackers I brought from home. Stereo had an iPod connector so I had all my tunes playing. Beds were really comfy and the closet was stocked with extra pillows. The staff happily delivered new Duraflames every three hours as we had the fireplace going approx. 24 hrs/day.

And the cons: Well, the Web site boasts about its wood-buring fireplace, but as I mentioned, they provide Duraflame (that's not a real fire to me). Did you catch the part about me bringing cheese and crackers from home? Well, I also had to run to Safeway twice to restock on food because there was NO room service. Sure, they had a couple menus from a pizza joint and a dive specializing in deep-fried bar food (that's not real room service to me). And the best gripe for last...the foghorn that friggin hums 24 hours a day that wakes and keeps you up at night. I could even hear it the second night after shutting all the windows sacrificing the ocean breeze (that's not what really staying on the beach is all about to me.)

All in all though, I think that this may have been the second best place to stay in HMB (Ritz Carlton being number One). I did quite a bit of research and thought I picked one of the better properties. Next time, I'll just spend more money and stay at the Ritz or go to Santa Cruz.

This place is nice and overlooks the ocean.  It's just too bad that the day we stayed here it was foggy and cloudy! In July!?!  That's unheard of where I'm from (San Diego)!  We got the penthouse suite which was a huge suite with a kitchen a bedroom a bathroom and a living room.  It was definitely spacious.  I don't consider it a luxury hotel, I think you're paying more for the beach view and spaciousness and usefulness of the whole room than the whole pampered feeling you would get from a luxury hotel.

My fiance and I had a nice weekend getaway here earlier this month and brought my parents as a celebration of their 40th anniversary.

Pros: The spacious, comfortable room (we had partial ocean view rooms) -- it's really more like an efficiency apartment with a small fridge, stove, sink, TV/stereo system, and fireplace/living room area.  Also a balcony. Another pro is the complementary continental breakfast and evening wine and cheese happy hour -- my dad was very happy that his Sunday ritual of reading the newspaper with his coffee was not disturbed!  He scored a great spot right by the lobby fireplace and read to his heart's content... The landscaping is beautiful and the pool and hot tub areas were clean.  The hotel is right on the ocean which is obviously a huge selling point as well. The staff was also generally very nice. I think the free toiletries in the rooms were Aveda, which is a nice touch, and there were robes and even a rubber duck in the tub as nice little extras.

Cons: The property is nice but the surroundings detracted from it -- right on Hwy 1, a trailer/RV park next door (which adjoins the hotel by a gate that was always open, with the teenaged kids from the park always seeming to be over in the hotel's pool and hot tub -- I feel like an old grump but it was annoying), a restaurant under construction on the other side, and across the street an open field with a day care center plunked down in the middle of it.  There is no restaurant or bar on the property, either.

The fog horn sounds constantly and almost drove me insane the first night -- I was pretty peeved there was no mention of this anywhere in the hotel info, but it's clearly an issue as there are ear plugs in the bathrooms!  Do yourself a favor and close your windows at night if you can -- turn on the fan if it's hot (they did provide a fan in every room).

Also, I guess if you've lived here in CA long enough, you know better than to expect sunny days on the beach -- ours were chilly and overcast/foggy, which is obviously no one's fault, but just a heads-up if you are also new to the area. We were a little bummed about that.

Finally, I was a little peeved that the staff didn't do anything special for my parents' anniversary, even just wishing them a happy anniversary upon checkin, even though I made a point to mention it in the reservation and when I called to confirm a week prior.  Small things like that make people want to return and help you feel like you are getting your money's worth -- at $295/night, the rooms weren't Ritz prices but that's not small change, either. I don't 100% feel like I got my money's worth -- I'd go back, but only if their prices were lower.

While the hotel itself is ok, services are lacking for the price charged.  For just a little more (about $75) you can stay a real luxury, full service resort up the coast at the Ritz-Carlton.  For over $225 a night I would expect a bellhop and help with luggage and an on-site restaurant of some sort and room service.  Not a buffet continental breakfast. No espresso, etc. Balconies are very small and strangely done.  The real problem is the very closeby and loud fog horn noise that blows all night about every 15 seconds like Chinese water torture.  Horrible.  Why spend so much and be disturbed or try sleeping with uncomfortable ear plugs?  The Ritz-Carlton is a better choice with prices so low because of the economy and great on-site restaurants, spa, big pool, better beach, hiking trails etc. If you are on a budget and don't mind the noise, it's good for the kitchenette feature if you're staying several days and want to bring your own food and cook.

I stayed here for three nights and really enjoyed this hotel.  I am not normally overly impressed by hotels, but this place is spot on.  Very friendly staff, spacious rooms that are well appointed, comfortable, and relaxing.  The location is great, easy walking distance to the marina and beach.  The hot tub is huge and has a great view of the water.  This would be a great get away for the weekend!

This beachfront hotel is so cute and cozy. Most rooms have a fantastic ocean view and the balcony is perfect for catching a sunset. Great spot for a romantic weekend getaway that isn't too far or too close to home. Great beaches for surfing and just a short walk from Pillar Point Harbor.

This cozy hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean was the perfect local romantic getaway for my husband and me. The guest suites include a wood burning fireplace and good amenities. It is not as luxurious as the nearby Ritz-Carlton Hotel, but either is the price.
