Lovely facilities.  I remember one magical day when I ball-girled for Jimmy Conners, Johnny Mac, Ivan Lendl and Bjorg.  Chrissy Evert and her husband where there too.  This is when I was young enough to chill on my kness on center court and hustle to the tennis balls.  Now not so much.

Let's face it - this is one of the most beautiful places on the planet (especially when the sky is blue!!) Driving along 17 mile drive, past gorgeous homes, a spectacular golf course, what could be bad?

    Well...I'm glad you asked.

I have very few complaints about the physical 'plant' of the place. The tennis shop is clean, well-organized, with a nicely-rotating selection of merchandise. The courts are well-maintained (two clay courts, beautifully-sprinklered every day); recently re-surfaced. New canopies in between courts; water dispensers on the courts; nice landscaping.

The Dining Room, pool, and fitness areas are equally spectacular. All are located along Stillwater Cove - well-maintained, mostly clean. (Although the pool area should be picked up more often.) Great lunch menu, good food. The two reclining bikes in the fitness room have to have the best view in the world -- all glass, overlooking the sailing wharf, sand, water, and one part of the golf course. Wow.

So what's the problem, you ask. (Again. Thanks for reminding me.)

It's simple -- The Club is not worth the over-$30,000 they charge for joining.  There are no real norms of behavior (one member once said to me, unprovoked, 'your time isn't important'. And he wasn't kidding.) There's not much of a sense of a club, just pockets of friends. The tennis program (while reasonably well-managed by Kie and Bill), doesn't really support active team formation - and one female member, who shall go nameless for my fear of her retaliation, has tried to get Beach Club personnel fired simply because she disagreed with them.  And she single-handedly prevented USTA teams from being formed, while she herself is never willing to run a team. Not a warm and fuzzy environment.

So before you plunk down the price of a new car to join a beautiful tennis club, be aware -- it's beautiful, but pretty darned cold.
