I've been here twice now, once while super crazy busy and once while slow (late at night on a Monday). Both times the pizza was absolutely fabulous and the house chardonnay was suprisingly and consistenly good, and affordable. Pizza range from $10 to $20+ depending on size and ingredients, but is truly gourmet and worth every penny IMHO. It's a thinner crust, though not the cracker thin crust I am used to at home in Chicago. But I love it because it's different. The ingredients are fresh and high quality, and the combinations are so good. My favorite is the egplant and goat cheese one, I keep forgetting its name.
Service is always super friendly, not the fastest but not unberably slow, and I enjoy not having to rush. And seriously, order a salad for while you are waiting. I've had the antipasta, tossed garden and greek. All are fresh delicious, and I love the house made cucumber dressing.
The garlic bread, I wouldn't say it's as awesome as they make it out to be (I am of course comparing it to some I've tried in Little Italy in Chicago which may be unfair), but it's pretty solid nonetheless and for the price, you can't beat it!
The neighborhood can be tough to park in (for Indy, Chicago we'd be walking 3 miles at an off time and paying $10 to do it) but seriously worth it. Also, park a few blocks away and walk anyway. I love this hip, fun neighborhood and there are a ton of great shops to stop at along the way. And next time I plan to hit the big toy store down the block while it's still open! :)
We headed to Bazbeaux on Saturday night after attending Comedy Sportz. We had a group of 8 and arrived about 9:45. We were seated quickly and our waitress came by to take our order.
I didn't like the attitude of our server, but maybe she was just having a bad day.
The food was pretty decent - although I was a little disappointed with the Garden pizza. The deluxe veggie at Papa Murphy's is significantly better.
It was more expensive than I feel it was worth. I probably won't be back, but it was ok.
I always enjoy the pizza.
Just be warned, It's expensive. Because it's Gourmet..... and they can charge that much.
Had the colossus pizza, which is basically their version of the supreme. Quality chunky ingredients with a nice crust and decent sauce. Could use a little more flavor. Garlic bread was run-of-the-mill... sadly.
Bazbeaux's is one of my favorite pizza joints in Indy. They have about 15 different hand made gourmet pizzas that are sure to fit the bill no matter what you're looking for.
The waitstaff is friendly, the food is served quickly, and the atmosphere is casual and fun. Sit outside if you can, they have a nice deck out back thats perfect for hanging out and drinking a few beers and tossing back a couple slices.
The tchoupitoulas and Bayou Chicken pizzas are my favorite, give them a try
Bazbeaux is always reliable. Everyone has their favorite pizza (mine is the BBQ Chicken with no peppers on whole wheat), everyone knows at least one staff member by first name and everyone has a favorite location - and the downtown is mine!
Less hippy, yuppy and children, the downtown location is in the heart of the Mass Avenue cultural district, with plenty of people watching to be had. I like sitting outside, but inside is okay too (I do miss the old murals, I think I complain about that everytime I'm there now).
From wholesome pizzas with funky toppings to po'boys and salads, everyone can find something tasty at Bazbeaux. For lunchtime you can order pizza by the slice and salads for a "can't beat it" price.
They're also freak friendly - the goth crew likes to visit here, and they always accommodate large groups with ease in their basement.
On the weekends do be prepared to wait quite sometime for a table, they do not accept reservations. I advise stopping by earlier in the week.
A downtown staple!
The pizza was pretty average here, but I did have an above average Nicoise salad along with a local brew, accompanied by a pretty funny server. But seriously, why is this pizza so popular?
Gourmet pizza. Staple for the broadripple area.
Good beer selection, nice outdoor seating.
Hands down the best pizza in Indy. A little pricey, but it's totally worth it. They have a great lunch special for around 5 or 6 dollars.
Even after living in NY and eating pizza for a good majority of my meals, Bazbeaux is still one of my favorite pizza places ever + I love their salads and the garlic pesto cheese bread is to die for! :)
Great options for vegetarians, great service, and I love sitting on the patio. Prefer this location to the downtown location, which seems to have a weird echo because of the high ceilings.
Good ZAA
Seriously the best pizza in Indianapolis! I was excited when I finally decided to go, and when they brought our pizza out I was a bit skeptical- it kind of looked like something you'd find in the microwave section of a grocery store- but one bit, and I was completely hooked!
Atmosphere is pretty good, although the seating arrangement seemed to be a bit awkward. Not a big down side though. (I've only been to the downtown location- not sure about Broad Ripple's)
Good crust, ok sauce, too much cheese. Lots of interesting people working here. No way near the best or the worst pizza I've had.
Everyone in Indy knows Bazbeaux!
They have a great selection of pizza with perfect crust, thin, but not grossly thin. They have a good selection of beers and are in a great location for nightlife, in Indy at least. They have an upstairs which is great for the summer!
LOVE this place. I grew up on the pizza here.
Yum yum yum! Who doesn't love Bazbeaux? They have some of the best specialty pizza choices in Indy, and I only wish that more places would take a cue from Bazbeaux and offer more "gourmet" pizza options.
I am a big fan of their Antipasto Salad as a starter -- the large is HUGE and is full of delish goodies (shrimp, salami, prosciutto,
pepperoni, artichoke hearts, onions, hearts of palm and pepperoncini). Oh, it is a salad to dream about. Quattro Formaggio and Garden are my fave pizzas. I love any pizza place that offers a wide array of cheeses. Mmm, ricotta, fontina and goat cheese heaven!
The wait staff doesn't ever seem to want to go out of their way for you, so that is a downside to Bazbeaux. And, if you want to eat outside on Mass Ave, the seating is really cramped to the point of being awkwardly uncomfortable. Inside is a bit more cozy and with the turn of the weather, now is a perfect time to give it a try!
It is NOT the best pizza in the WORLD! Ya have to go to Chicago for that. With that said, it is consistently good, reliable, and quirky. Call it NY style service. Hurry, get on out of my way, but you still might get a small smile. They do a great job and lots of OLD time employees there. One dude I KNOW has been there 15 years...sliding those pies in and out of the oven. My one complaint is the garlic cheese bread. It is delicious, BUT, it NEVER comes out to you before you are completely done with everything else. If they tried, they could do better on this point,,,but until then, consider it garlic cheese bread DESSERT. :-)
I'm going to write separate reviews for this location and Broad Ripple, one because I go to the downtown location more often, so I want to give the Ripp spot more consideration and secondly because they are night and day different.
The spot in questions, on Mass. Ave is tragically hip and decidedly Bohemian. They wait-staff is coffee shop cool and don't really care about you or your damn pizza. They have an attitude that at first may seem a bit cross, but, you can't stop coming back to get more licks from them...I love it.
The pizza is amazing but please don't order pepperoni. They have made a statement that they are going to be the place to get gourmet pizza and in the meantime they forgot how to be traditional. The basic stuff kinda sucks, but the gourmet stuff is off the chain. Get the Bayou Special, with craw fish and a spicy kick that makes you want an Abita.
The beer list is awesome and you can get pretty good deals on buckets most of the time. I love Bazbeaux more and more each time I go, but I guess I don't see it as the revered Indy institution a lot of folks make it out to be
I ate here again with a friend and my wife. I think I found my favorite pizza here. The Bazbeaux Special with salami and pepperoni tastes like heaven on Earth on the thin crust. The service was fast and friendly and we were seated immediately on a Thursday night.
There is a slender redhead waitress who is smokin' hot! Ask to sit in the dungeon downstairs if its open.

I haven't eaten here in ten years due to not living in town. When I moved back to Indy, the first… Read more »
I don't know why, but I have never really been impressed by the pizza here. I have tried a couple of the specialties and then had just traditional pizza. It's not bad, but I'm kind of turned off because it is very pricey and not incredible.
I do like the atmosphere. The outdoor seating and placement in Broad Ripple are great.
Really? This is the best that Indy's got? We were passing through town a few weeks back, found a review in Lonely Planet--garlic, thin crust, sounded good. But the reality was pretty damn weak.
For starters, this was no "thin" crust--pretty standard and not all that flavorful. The garlic was too sharp and didn't blend well with the other flavors (and left us both with sour stomachs a few hours later--and we normally LOVE garlic). Then there was the space-cadet service--seems a few weekend training courses are in order for the folks in this place.
To top things off, the place wound up doubling as a homeless shelter--now nothing wrong with a couple of backpack-weary dudes indulging in a warm room and a sit-down meal, except that they were pretty wacked out, wandering the restaurant and staring at people, using the bathroom about every 5 minutes (god knows), and stinking up the joint. The manager seemed eager to get them out, but c'mon, dude, how'd you let this happen in the first place?
Best Pizza in Indianapolis.
Love everything they have there.
anytime I want pizza I always recommend this place
I frequent Chicago a lot, so after that pizza, it's hard for anything to live up. Trying to put that aside, Bazbeaux is pretty good. I really like all their choices, pizza can get boring but with mexican or eggplant options among many others, Bazbeaux makes it interesting. The pizza was a good thickness, not too thin not deep dish or greasy and it had good fresh toppings. I definitely wouldn't say this is the best pizza ever, but it is perhaps maybe one of the top options in Indy.
The decor is interesting, the walls are kind of trippy with all the paint and designs. The furniture inside is plastic lawn furniture, which isn't really comfortable. It's sometimes dark from the outside and hard to tell if it's open.
Must admit this is another Indy fave that I don't get.
Maybe it comes from my over-indulgence of their offerings when I worked right across the street. It got to the point that that's all I ever ate, and I didn't even like it that much back then. It was convenient. That's it.
So, I waited to try it again. Seriously, folks, it was a couple YEARS since I had it last. And ... I still don't like it that much. I mean, it's not horrible. It's just not great. It's just OK.
When it comes to pizza in this city, in my opinion, we are seriously lacking in GOOD options. And I'd venture to say we do not have a GREAT pizza place. I've had great pizza. It ain't here.
If you're going to go to Bazbeaux, (that sounds like a catchy phrase for an ad) ... I suggest a pepperoni and banana pepper pizza on wheat crust with a side salad. I do also like the BBQ chicken pizza. The Popeye sandwich is a favorite with veg heads.
Warning: Be ready to wait a long time at the downtown location during lunch or dinner. For lunch, they offer by-the-slice ordering, and it goes VERY QUICKLY. Get there early!
Love the pesto bread!
I had the good fortune of eating here not once on a recent trip to Indianapolis, but twice--on the same day!
The Friday lunch flow was great; not too crowded, fast paced. Loved the simple interiors, the sidewalk cafe and the terrific pizza which is about as close to New York style as you're going to find in Indy. The serve yourself, no-fuss attitude was great...that is, until I went there for dinner.
I've seen other restaurants do this same thing: be a "nice" fast-food place during the daytime, then switch to waiter service at night. I went in expecting the same laid-back vibe but didn't know it turns into Chez Bazbeaux complete with a wait-until-seated sign. I went there the second time thinking I'd order a couple slices and read a newspaper but ended up ordering a pizza to go and driving back to the hotel.
They have a terrific selection of pizzas, and I took back a "Neptune"--crab, shrimp, pea pods to my room at the Sheraton. What I had hoped would be a culinary delight turned out wrong. Crab meat does NOT belong on a pizza. Just when you're waiting for something zesty or flavorful to enlighten the "Neptune", the cooked crab produces the texture of a moist sock. Don't do it. Be forewarned.
When I go back, I want to try the Chilope or the Tchoupitoulas.
This is probably the best pizza in Indianapolis (though once you've had it twice a week for noon conference it starts to wane on ya).
You have so many types of pizzas and toppings to choose from (including 'exotic' toppings like sun dried tomatoes, lots of cheese varieties). I always stick with the cheese pizza (cuz I'm kevin from Home Alone) with Feta and sun dried tomatoes. It is fantastic!
If you go while it's busy you can wait about 20 minutes for the pizzas to come but honestly, service is pretty fast and friendly. The location in Broad Ripple is just as good!
Definitely make this your number one pizza place in the city. There's so many varieties to try too!
Bazbeaux is widely regarded as the best pizza in Indianapolis and I can't really argue with that. They have a huge variety of unique pizzas but you can always stick to the traditional styles if you're not so adventurous. Either way, you won't be disappointed by the quality. I love the wheat crust option to create the illusion that I'm eating "healthy" pizza.
The atmosphere is pretty cool and the help is usually pretty friendly but I like the Broadripple location better because it has outdoor seating and is larger. This place is very popular, so be prepared to wait a long time. I went once with a group of 6 and ended up waiting over an hour for a table (we were told 30-40 minutes). That experience is what prevents me from giving Bazbeaux that fifth star.
I grew up in Chicago, so I am very picky about pizza. I was pleasantly surprised that Bazbeaux is very much Chicago pizza worthy. It is probably the best place for pizza in Indiana.
Good Pizza, for Indianapolis at least.
I recommend the quatro frommagio. mmm
Found this restaurant yelp surfing on my iphone while wandering around downtown. Decided to check it out after reading its positive yelp reviews and the fact that it was withing walking distance of my current location.
Positives: The place was packed! we barely managed to score a seat out on the patio, Bazbeaux should be doing something right. Their selection and variety was unique you won't find those options of materials at any other pizza joint.
Negatives: I wasn't overly impressed with the product itself. Found the crust to be hard and tasteless. Pizza was brought to the table lukewarm. Found it to be a little pricey in relations to the pizza pan size given.
I've heard quite a few people complain about Bazbeaux downtown recently. I was one of them. But I have to say, after avoiding the place for perhaps a month, I had lunch there last week and it was... better.
I did the express lunch: a slice of pepperoni, a salad with their homemade creamy cucumber dressing. I got through the line quickly, the pizza was tasty, and the salad was nice and crisp. Plus drink, it wasn't bad for roughly $5.
There's just a few things you MUST remember about Bazbeaux (in addition to how to spell it):
1. Eat the za while it's hot. What is so heavenly, fresh and delicious just out of the oven gets broadsided by a thin crust that just doesn't reheat well. I could compare the cooled crust to ginsu-sharp cardboard and share the other crust comments I've heard, but I'll just advise you to take my word for it -- eat it all at once and leave no left overs for best effect.
2. You might arrive to see the express lunch line extend out the door in everything but below-zero weather (and sometimes even then!) but the line does move quick enough that you can have lunch then run down to Luna Music before you have to be back at work.
You might see something of a line at dinner-time, too, but I've never had to wait too long for a table...
3. They have tables in the basement, along with their little liquor lock-up (ok, just bottles of wine). Still, it's pretty cool. I'm pretty sure that over the summer the upstairs interior was redone (stenciled walls, lots of pattern and color) although the basement is -- while still cool and interesting -- has a totally different (darker?) if similar sort of atmosphere.
4. If you're addicted to the salad dressing -- like, say, their creamy cucumber -- they will fill up an 8 oz cup (and charge you a bit of pocket money for it, of course). You'll be all the happier for it!
(FYI, if you go there for dinner toss some hearts of palm on the Greek salad and have a little creamy cucumber dressing -- it's great, I swear!)
I recently moved from downtown Indianapolis to Los Angeles, and oh how I miss Bazbeaux, their quattro fromaggio pizza, and their creamy basil dressing! Seriously, I crave it!
It's one of those places that I would usually take my out-of-town friends for a tasty but low-key meal, and upon returning to their home cities, each would tell me how they loved "that one pizza place on that cool little street." Needless to say, it was always a hit!
I'm still searching for a place in L.A. that even compares to Bazbeaux! Can't wait to get back to Indy for a pizza and spinach salad fix!!
under New Management & loved the 1970s music tonight, i time warped backwards in time
& the pizza is Always good

MMM, Baz... The only thing they need to change is their delivery routes. Its time to move on and start delivering East of College
First Impression / Overview:
This is probably the best pizza joint in Indy. They have great food and prices are reasonable. Salads are great (home-made dressings).
Reccomendations:
1. The staff is not very attentive when customers walk in the door.
2. Consider opening a location in the Avon/Plainfield area.
This is the best Pizza ever! This is what pizza should taste like! Try their cheese Bread it is awesome!
Great pizza. Fast service.
I get the TCHOUPITOULAS without andouille. It's good everytime.
loved it. very good pizza. only weird thing was that they didn't have tabasco...they said it was floating around sometimes.
good beer selection. i sat inside, it was raining out, otherwise i might have sat outside and looked at the construction site across the street on lovely mass ave.
Bazbeaux is an excellent place to eat pizza and hang out with friends.
When you first walk in there is a nice area that is devoted for seating during a wait. Since the restaurant is a bit on the small side, there is often a wait during busy times. If you come a bit later or earlier, there should be no problem. The atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent. It is very artsy, and typical of an indie diner.
As far as the food goes, you won't be disappointed! They have a wide variety of pizzas, salads, and some other delicious samplings. It is easy to make everyone happy as they are willing to do half and half, fourths, etc. in regards to toppings. For a place that primarily serves pizza, they do have an extensive wine list which you should get when seated, but might have to ask to see.
I don't really recommend this for children unless they are very mild mannered and are normally subjected to foul language. Since it is small, you often hear things that you sometimes wish you did not. It's also very hard, except for the patio, to access this restaurant if you are in a wheelchair. There is a step when you first walk in, and narrow hallways.
Also, another great thing about Bazbeaux is the service. I have never had bad service there, and I go quite often. The staff is knowledgeable about all sorts of things, whether it is food related or not. This provides for a good conversation and an excellent dinning experience. They are prompt and friendly.
The only things that I don't really like about it, would be the lunch set up where it essentially runs like any other mall joint. I'm not a big fan of the bird that the neighboring store has outside. It's not really close to the restaurant, per say, but I do not like it when I have to walk by. Parking is another issue, but sometimes you can score a spot right in front.
