10 reviews for Bayou
Only okay.
A nice restaurant, with good decor. However, I found the food to be uninspired and somewhat bland from the appetizer to the main course.
My experience at Bayou was disappointing. I went for brunch with my sister and my mom a few weeks ago. The place was empty, which was probably due to the major construction going on in the area that we were not aware of. And, yes, I know that Milwaukee is not a big brunch city. I had the chicken and waffles, which I was looking forward to all week long. The waffle was definitely not homemade, probably frozen. The chicken was fried chicken strips, which is not what I expected. I'm not going to race back, but would definitely be willing to give it another shot for dinner.
I have been meaning to get back in touch with yelp, my wonderful reviews, and being able to get this restaurant out in the know!
I have always told my friends that if a meal will make me cry, it is a perfect meal.
Bayou is one of the newest restaurants in Milwaukee, right on the Milwaukee river. A beautiful outdoor patio surrounds the restaurant and makes for a perfect summers dining, and a terrible idea for the winter...but thats besides the point. I have always liked cajun food but this restaurant really seems to bring on extreme variety in their food and in the different sauces you can choose from to etiher burn your mouth off (which I prefer) or keep it mild.
Definately a great place for a date, or with a group of friends, which I got to experience for my wonderful friend Marc's birthday, and we realized we knew the owner, so of course their hospitality of giving us free drinks made me love this place even more!
Since its opening two months ago, Bayou has received generally good, but a few mixed reviews. I love cajun food and there's not much of it in Milwaukee, so I was looking forward to trying it for a recent birthday dinner.
What followed was one of the best meals I have ever had in Milwaukee. Following the suggestion of the local daily's restaurant reviewer, I ordered the pecan-encrusted pork loin. This was definitely the most flavorful and perfectly cooked piece (or rather, slab) or pork I have ever eaten. The accompanying sweet potatoes, baked apples and garlic-y green beans were all perfect.
Drinks were average, but each appetizer, entree and dessert was quite good. Note to the healthy - all the food was very rich, but there were no compaints about flavor, texture or preparation.
Our server was excellent, and the host and what appeared to be the manager were prompt, friendly and very helpful. The decor is urban and upscale, but the overall feel of the place was unpretentious. I can't wait to have a drink and some appetizers out on the patio in summer.
My wife and I recently went to Bayou to use a http://Restaurant.com gift certificate we had purchased. (A $25 off of $35 coupon was a mere $6). We went for brunch on a Saturday afternoon and like others, the place was pretty empty. We were one of four tables occupied. The bridge construction nearby definitely made it a bit of a challenge to get to. But, let's get onto the food.
I had the cajun burger which was prepared well with some good spices to it. The bun was a huge let down as it was almost a Wonder Bread type bun and collapsed under the weight of the burger almost immediately. The red beans and rice were tasteless until I added some hot sauce to them. The jalapeno cornbread was actually pretty decent as a side. My wife had the omlette with avocado, salsa, and cheddar. It was prepared well, but the avocado was almost sauce-like inside and dripped out. Was a strange consistency to say the least. The andouille sausage on the side was grilled very well and quite tasty. I had a couple of mojitos which were prepared well.
The big dissappointment was the key lime pie dessert. It had definitely seen better days in terms of taste and was served on an absolutely filthy, water-spotted plate. Not great at all.
Overall, the price was right, but only with the certificate and if the brunch is any indication of the overall food, we probably won't be back to try the lunch and dinner choices.
After reading some good reviews, we decided to give this place a try. The first impression when you walk through the door is very good. The decoration of the place is smart, pleasing to the eye, and has warm colors. It is not over-crowded with too many furniture and tables.
The appetizers are are sub par. They have an ice cold spring roll, that was really stiff, so we had to send it back. The guacamole was between below average and average. Amongst the entrees we've tried Jambalaya, and it was the best thing we had. It was really tasty and worth going back for.
Overall, we won't be rushing back to Bayou. Although it may be worth trying during summer for happy hour when they open the outdoor patio.
Went here last night for Restaurant week and it was very disappointing. I ordered the chip and dip appetizer, fish tacos and key lime pie. THe chip and dips served with quac, blackbean dip and tomatoes were uninspiring. The fish tacos were served with rice and beans and were terrible -- overly fried fish lost on a large overdried tortilla with coleslaw as if the tortilla had been sitting in the oven for days. The key lime pie was run of the mill. I thought restaurant week was supposed to make you want to come back to an establishment instead of the opposite reaction that this place gave me - to not go back.
This is a pretty decent place. My only complaints are that the parking was lacking and the space was too cavernous. Not that it's a bad space but it just doesn't make you feel cozy like good ol' cajun food should. I don't want to see another Milwaukee business all hyped on steel and tall ceilings with giant fixtures...boring. But the food, that was tasty. My mom and I had sweet potato pie (which was pretty good...but weird as a meal), my date had the fried chicken (which was out of this world), and my dad had mahi mahi which I didn't get to try. Everyone was more than pleased with their meals. The beer selection is fantastic (and typical NOLA...as they had a good selection of Abitas). The service was good and the crowd was minimal. Overall, not bad but I will be back when I'm in town again to see if I can be thrilled a bit more.
Not bad, but not great. Let me first say that we never set foot inside of Bayou. We were there for their First Annual Memorial Day Crawfish Boil. Sounds cool, right? Only one problem though. There was apparently a problem with their shipment from Louisiana and in order to stretch the crawfish further they offered a half crawfish, half shrimp boil. For $10 you got a pound of crawfish and shrimp, an ear of corn, and two boiled red potatoes. Not a bad deal, and it was all very tasty. It was obvious that it was there first attempt at holding an event like this. The whole thing was a bit disorganized and I felt like perhaps they pulled a bait and switch by promising $10 buckets of Miller Lite and instead offering $3 Dixie cup sized drafts. Not cool for two beer thirsty girls. All in all Bayou seemed to have some potential and I have to believe that their table service is better. Next year's event is bound to be smoother.
The fried chicken entree was fabulous, tasso gravy over home-made mashed potatoes......mmmmm. One caveat though, the lunch portion was very reasonable, because it consisted of a nice piece of chicken breast, and a darn good value for the price. However, I had the same dish at dinner for $17.95, and was served two dinky chicken wings and what looked like part of a thigh. That's probably the reason I haven't been back there
