Here was my initial impression on the tee-box of Black Horse's Hole #1, "Open fairway, fairly flat with not too much elevation change, piece of cake. It going to be a good round today." Here was my reaction when I got to the Green, "Holy, Mother of God. What the hell...!" A multi-tier green that resembled an amusement park/roller coaster ride for golf balls. Did I mentioned the green was fast. Come to think of it, the green designer must have taken his inspiration from the Laguna Seca Raceway nearby. the infamous Corkscrew comes to mind!

Overall, it was a very decent round as I managed to minimize the 3-putt to just a few. The same can't be said about my playing partner. The poor guy!!! It was inspiring to see a 3-Wood drive onto the green of a 185-yard Par 3 then witness the devastation of a 3-putt that took the ball up and down and around, finally in the cup. Ouch!!! What started out as a 6-footer birdie putt turned into frequent-flyer-mileage bogey. A sure heart-breaker! As well as a ball-buster and ego-bruiser!  =)

Beautiful peeks of the Monterey Bay! Very good facility! The pace of play was pretty relax as the courses were being prepared for the Safeway Invitation the very next day.

We finished our round in 4 hours. Once we cleared the front threesome, the pace quicken.

Looking forward to Bayonet next time around.

=)

They renovated this course last year and now it is in great shape, with new greens, tees and bunkers, new fairways and redesigned holes.  If you have played here before you will recognize most holes, especially on Bayonet, but most have been modernized for the better.  It plays maybe a little easier than before (Tour Pro Billy Mayfair once said no one would ever break par at Bayonet if they held the U.S. Open there) since they cutt down a lot of trees and lowerd some of the elevation changes, but thats because they are building a five star resort on the property and dont want to freak out the tourists.

Always funny to read women reviewing golf courses for wedding ceremony potential.  Its like, "Honey, lets have our wedding at your favorite golf course, because that will be the last time you ever see it"

WEDDING SITE REVIEW: We looked at the clubhouse for our wedding reception.

Jeff Nelson called me back the same day I emailed him. He sent me banquet menus and gave me a short breakdown on room costs.

I didn't make an appointment to tour the facilities because I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to make it to Monterey anytime soon... so we did a little self-guided tour of the clubhouse. I liked the views (even through the current smoky haze).

This place is super affordable! I hope that it stays somewhat affordable after the construction is done.

We would have used this as our reception site if we decided to get married at Lovers Point or a beach nearby.

Great course and great value.
Currently the front 9 of Bayonet and the back 9 of Blackhorse are open.

There's great diversity on this course and it's quite challenging for many different levels of play. The holes are unique, challenging, pretty and well placed.  As mentioned in another write up, you need to get rid of your slice before you show up and get ready for a roller coaster ride on the greens. Not one of them is anywhere close to flat.

Don't forget your jacket as fog and wind can certainly be there.

The course is in great shape and it's worth a trip.

Bayonet and Black Horse are two courses from the old Army Ft. Ord.  Wonderful layouts in the pines and rolling hills above Seaside, they are also very challenging. Those Army generals must have been good golfers.

It is now run by a private corporation, and they put a lot of bucks into upgrading these courses. Unfortunately, the green fees reflect this now.

Here is some info on the new construction:

Phase one of a multi-million dollar project of a 330 room 4-Star Hotel, 25 Timeshares/Condos, 125 home sites and the complete renovation of both golf courses has begun. Phase one consists of the complete renovation of Holes1 through 9 of Bayonet and the construction of 30 Home sites.

Renovations are to include the following:

- Installation of a state of the art Irrigation system
- Addition and Redesign of bunkers
- A Redesign and Rebuild of greens to USGA specifications
- Removal of Kikuyugrass and regrass of front nine

Plans are to renovate 9 holes at a time with construction of the hotel to begin in 2007. Completion is approximately two years.

Anyway, the Black Horse course is fun, for my skill to play.  Lots of trees, so straight shots required. The Bayonet course is only if you want to commit hari cari on the course.  Most likely the longest and hardest course I ever have played.  They use it for pro qualifying and CA state amateur tournaments. Really tough like a 620 yard par 5.  Geez, I hit wood, wood, wood and wood, and still not on green.

Overall, the courses have a nice location and great views, and you are golfing on the Monterey peninsula. Worth checking out.

Both of these courses can be added to one of my favorites.

Bayonet:  If there was ever a course that would make me want to quit the game of golf (heaven forbid), it'd be Bayonet.  It's that hard.  Not only do you have to hit it long, you've got to hit is straight too....who does that?!  A humbling experience indeed.

Black Horse:  This is just a fun course to play.  Compared to Bayonet, it's a breeze (I'd say 99% of the courses in the bay area are as well).  There are alot of memorable holes and the grounds are well kept.   I'd say play here to make yourself feel better after the beating from Bayonet.

Both of these courses are worth the 1+ hour drive, IMO.

Two stars for the Bayonet Bar & Grill, and four stars for the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses themselves.

This is one of my favorite places to tag along with Mr. F. when he decides to go play golf.  The courses and scenery are just beautiful, though the courses themselves are very challenging.  Be prepared for shifts in temperature, though, if you're just going to tag along.  I always need to dress in layers, no matter what the forecasters are claiming to be the weather of the day.

However, as much as we both love his golf trips to Bayonet/Blackhorse, we've both become dismayed at the vast decline in the quality of the food at the Bayonet Bar & Grill.  We visit B&B several times a year and I have always enjoyed the way that they seemed to be the only breakfast place in existence that could make my over-medium eggs just the way I liked them.  But now, over-done, soggy, burnt food is the norm.  The last time we visited, my hash browns looked as if they had been soaking in bad oil and were completely inedible, and the tortilla part of my huevos rancheros were so burnt they were dark brown around the edges.  I wish I could say that this is the only time something like this has happened, but the time before last it took forever to get our food, and when we finally did get it, it was also ill-prepared.  We had talked to the Manger about the long wait when a bit later he came back and told us that he had to go break up a poker game in the kitchen, but our food would be right out.  Well, at least we knew why our food was forgotten...

I know that the cafe isn't the most important part of your golfing experience, but really, if you're hungry before your round at B&B, it's probably for the best that you eat somewhere else first.
