Review from Alison A.
South San Francisco, CA
I went here earlier today on a whim, while walking down the street to Never Too Latte. I figured I would pick up some conditioner for my dog, since I needed it anyways.
The guy working, who may have been the owner, was very friendly and helpful, and have me recommendations for what products should be good for my dogs skin.
He also carries holistic brands of food from small companies that aren't loaded with crap and fillers like basically every national brand. My dog is currently on Wellness, but if I do decide to switch his diet, I'll definitely come here to try another brand. -

I continue to shop here on a regular basis. All other retail establishments should learn from Alan and Fred on how to provide customer service. They continue to provide top notch service and advice. There prices are as good or better than anyone elses. The selection is great. They treat you like family. If i went anywhere else I'd feel like i was cheating on them.
The best pet store PERIOD!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Alan is pretty cool to talk to. The website didn't have my Solid Gold that I wanted, so went to the store in person. Free home delivery for food orders over $35? wow!
Very informed about dog and cat nutrition. He has over 20 yrs in the industry coming from Pet Club. They will also price match and do special orders. He gave a great recommendation on the Tire Biter toy that my boy loves! Got lucky on 1 hr free parking right in front of the store.
If you want special order call ahead in advance. If you are not sure, stop in on a weekday early afternoon for questions the store is not crowded then. -

We love the personalized customer service we get at this place, something that is completely lacking at the Petco down the road. The owners are great and friendly... and while they keep on forgetting our names, they never forgot our dog's name =).

Honestly, I have never been so engaged into conversation at a pet store before. The owners, cousins I found out, were eager to find out how I leaned about their shop, what dog food I use and why, and to tried to get me to help spread the word that they are trying to sell large doghouses to make way for a grooming section. They were BEYOND helpful. They even carried my 40 lb bag of dog food to my car 2 blocks down for me . It was really quite nice considering I had my dog on a leash with me.
I always love when people tell me how pretty my dog is. Awh, makes me happy. I don't care if its flattery, it's still nice.
Plus they stock my brand of healthy dog food!
Stay away from Petco's and Petsmarts and support some local business! They carry high quality stuff. Only the best for our pooch!Listed in: Dog Parks & Pet Friendly…

Great little place to get those quick doggie essentials.
I've been here a handful of times only, and everytime it was a good experience. I live within a few blocks of here so walking there with the dog is great. Especially when you're going there to get her the little things you need to get liket treats, or just to get a good walk in with the dog. They are pet friendly of course, so you can bring your dog in or whatever you have with you with no worries. They have the basics here. Food, toys, treats, leashes, collars, some doggie medical supplies, and other misc stuff that would come with owning a dog or cat. I think I even saw some stuff for birds and possibly fish.
They do groom here as well, but I haven't used it myself. I did hear though from another patron that they'll let you use their facilities to wash your own pet! She said she's done it plenty before, and that you could bring your dog in and use their tubs and what not to wash them down yourself if needed. You supply your own shampoo's of course, but this is the first time that I've heard of such a thing from a pet store... if any! I don't know if there's any costs accociated with this though, but as I can only assume, there probably is.
The staff is helpful, but on one occasion the clerk I spoke to didn't seem to knowledgeable on some rates and what not. She actaully let me just thumb through the pricing binder myself to look up what I was asking for in terms of grooming. They may be under staffed too. I think the times I went there, there were only two people in the store. BTW, the prices are pretty much the same compared to other bigger chains like PETCO or PETSmart.
Overall though, if you want to support a mom and pop shop, and you're in the neighborhood, come on by and expect to be treated with courtesy and get those simple essentials you need without the lines and the crowds.Comment from Fred C. of Bay Area Whole Pets 3/4/2010

This is a great neighborhood pet store that has an array of healthy pet foods, pet toys and much more. The store is always tidy and organized every time I make a trip in to buy food for my dog. Upon entering, I'm always greeted by Alan, one of the happy & knowledgeable managers there. He has been a great source of knowledge in helping me to make the right choices in food to help keep my dog healthy and happy.
Ever since I switched to EaglePak from Science Diet, there has been a noticeable change in my dog's behavior and coat. He's eats less, is more energetic and his fur is soft and shiny. Every time I take my dog to the dog park, passersby always compliment him and admire his fluffy white coat.
I would highly recommend everyone to check this place out. The type of service and eduction received from the staff that work there is very helpful for those of us that want to learn more about the right products for our pets. I believe they also carry items for birds, fish and reptiles as well... although I never made it point to visit those sections since I don't own one.
Because Bay Area Whole Pets believes in all-natural foods, I know they have my pet's best interest in mind. -

This is the best pet store around. The guys know their stuff and helped me with my dog's eating habits. They also carry a selection of holistic dog food that you can't find at the main stream stores like Petsmart or Petco

This is one awesome place. They are very knowledgeable and I recommend them to everyone I know.
My dog had runny eyes and used to have itchy skin. I thought it was normal and the vet recommended that we feed him science diet. These guys gave me TOW and and within two days, his eyes stop running and no more itchy witchy! -

They recently moved locations in South City to the back of someone's house (don't ask). Took the family cat here recently and it was a mess! We could hear the chaos from the car... wtf was going on inside??? Dogs barking everywhere and in the same room as the cats, people scrambling around, all chaos, no control. My cat was traumatized. They put him in his cage soaking wet and told me to let him air dry (am I on candid camera?!) They cut his hair so short you could see his skin, then they charged me $75 and told me next time I could stay and help??!! I don't blame him for biting, peeing, and pooping on these ladies. Even my cousin who HATES cats felt sorry for him. He would have been better off running through the car wash at Chevron.

I make the 15 min drive south to get food for my pup from these guys. Allen and Fred are always happy to see you, always happy to help you out with any question, and always happy to recommend something worth while. This is my pet store from now on.

It's a whole new experience when you shop at Whole Pets in San Bruno! For starters, their greeting always includes my name. Allen and Fred are eager to help and share their knowledge of the benefits of feeding your pet holistically. Since I've started buying my pugs and Persian cat food from Whole Pets in San Bruno, there is never anything going to waste. In the past my pugs and Persian were so finicky I'd end up throwing away food that wasn't eaten or because it just got old and stale. You will be an enlightened pet parent after your first visit to their store. Just try it. You won't be disappointed!!

I decided yesterday at lunch to give these guys a call. I had less than 3 cups of food left and needed food in a hurry for the puppy! I called and they had me place my order on-line. Allan then delivered the food last night at 7:30pm. Now, I know this is probably not usual - same day delivery (and it was free) but I have to say I was beyond impressed. Allan and I had a great conversation about food and he seemed very knowledgeable about the foods that dogs are eating. I always prefer to shop at a place where the people KNOW their product and are not just there for a paycheck (like Petco etc). If you are interested on getting your dog on a good quality food - this place is the place to go! Thanks Allan!

Excellent non-chain pet store run by people who really care about you, your animal, and customer service. They are able to provide remarkably low prices and good selection of quality dog food and other products despite being an independent store. When I call, they remember me and my dog and the food I want and, if they don't have it in stock, get it remarkably quickly. (By comparison, petco said it would take "minimum 2 weeks" for the solid gold wolf cub they got for me in a day) Highly recommend them for food recommendations, food, and basic supplies like leashes and collars. (Not sure what their inventory is like for other animals... but 5 stars for dogs -- what I shop for!)

Fred and Allen are very helpful and know their stuff. This is where I come for my Holistic Dog Food for my Shih Tzu. Price is very reasonable and they carry items that the big corporate pet store don't carry. Check them out!

I have been coming to Bay Area Whole Pets for a couple of months now and loved how convenient they are to my house. The first time I came to the store, I was pleased for the wonderful customer service and the education of what food I should buy for my two poms. However, every time I go to the store to buy my dog food, I am constantly bothered by what other products I should buy my dogs. Hey, Im just there to by my dog food, I don't have time to talk to you about probiotics. Who do you think you are? You are not a vet, nor a holistic vet. I care about my dogs, but if my vet does not recommend probiotics for their health, why should i buy something that is not needed. I also feel that the brand of dog food that i buy has been overpriced, I could have saved $10. Maybe, it's my mistake for not checking out other pet stores that sell my organic dog food, but if I were you, go on your dog foods website and check to see what other locations sell your organic dog food. Compare prices and you will notice that you are paying more at Bay Area Whole Pets.
