I have been a customer of Organic Express for years. Last week my produce was not delivered. I went to their web-site and was redirected to SPUD.com - a chain of the same kind I guess. They did not send me an email to inform me of the change, did not follow through with my order, do not offer the same products, did not return my calls or emails this week, and have a super-annoying web-site that I could not figure out how to add my credit card info. I don't even know if this is company is still going to provide cal-local farmer to home service. And the customer service already proves to be complete crap. To my old friends at the Original ORganic Express - thanks for your service and good bye!

Organic Express is now Spud.com. They merged with another company. I loved Organic Express. They were always great. When I had a problem they fixed it or credited me.
But now that spud.com (A Canadian company with offices in many states) has taken over I'm not happy any more. They expected some wrinkles and asked existing customers to be patient. They said they would return calls. I'm now two weeks into spud.com and both weeks I've been charged for veggies I ordered but didn't receive. The funny thing is that the packing list they insert lists what I'm supposed to get. They bill automatically. I've called twice now and left messages. My calls haven't been returned. I think I'm going to switch to a different company - this time a local one.
I gave them two stars because I just can't give a veggie delivery service one star. I just can't. That would be mean.

UPDATE 5/8/08
The BOX is not closed!! It was just acquired by Spud. So far, there has been no noticeable difference in my service, except that there is a greater variety of sundries and dairy available.
spud.com.
Do it.

Don't believe the hype: grocery delivery and organic produce are not just for rich people.
I am a serious BOX evangelist (testify!), and you will be too. In 5 or more years, I have never had one problem with these people. Not one. They're ridiculously civilized. And the produce is fantastic.
They assemble the most affordable, balanced, locally-grown combinations of produce for you in the regular box, but if you don't picture yourself preparing kale (I like vegetables, but I'm not crazy!), just go online and customize your order. You can also adjust the size of your delivery and the frequency.
I am seriously in love with these veggie hippies! Please give them a try. You'll eat better, you'll put your money where your mouth is, you'll be pampered by amazing service and you won't spend much more than you would at Safeway for some mealy, pale tomato with funky human baby cells in it.

Nothing like raised consciousness to wrack you with conflicted feelings!
On the one hand, I like the ease and quality that Organic Express delivers to my house every other week. A box full of fruits and veggies which are all organic. I can even tell them which specific veggies and fruits that I never want. There are even recipes included and some them are excellent! So far, so good, yes?
You may be wondering, where's the downside? I wonder if the organic farming is sustainable which given the increasing demand, it may not be. Even more importantly, the energy footprint to grow and bring said organic produce to my door may indeed counterproductive.
So, don't order it you say. For now, my desire for organic food and let's face it, laziness to go to the farmer's market, outweighs the guilt over energy costs. For now.

They deliver to Pacifica! Which is the reason why I thought I'd test it out. And now I am sold on delivered organic produce. It is so convenient and makes me eat a wider variety of produce. And even their winter selection is varied and interesting. I hardly ever supplement my order with a run to the grocery store because I just go online and customize my order every week. I still go to the market for my dry goods and occasional meat but Organic Express has drastically cut down my grocery store trips AND made meal planning easier (I just plan around what I've got lying around instead of having to come up with a meal!) Oh and if anything of theirs is damaged or starting to go bad, it's real easy to report it online and be reimbursed... basically it's an awesome service.

Organic Express was bought by Spud. They apparently don't care about their customer base since I did not receive my delivery this week - nor did I receive any communication about it -- and, I cannot log into their website. This does not say much for new organization. I complained this morning by email and still have not received a response (as of 6pm)
So, I spend $29 every two weeks to have produce dropped off in front of my house. Lots of fruit (nothing too exotic- yesterday all I got were apples & 3 pears), some fresh veggies, like swiss chard and broccoli. Probably cheaper if you head to the actualy asian grocery store, but hey, it's organic, and comes straight to your door in a big box! You can also add groceries to your list, like cereal, chips, ketchup, etc. And yes- ALL ORGANIC!!. Pretty cool, gotta support the cause!!

Just got my first box two days ago, and I'm already obsessed with this service. SO AWESOME. A variety of fresh, delicious organic produce delivered right to your door. Also, they made extra efforts to get in touch with me to make sure my box was delivered to the right place in my building, which was really cool. The boxes also come with recipes and information about the latest produce. I'm planning on making their recipe of black bean chili with butternut squash tonight. Yum! I also think it's great that you can choose to order whenever you'd like - once in a while, bimonthly, weekly, whatever. And you can specify what types of produce you don't want - for me, that would be carrots and onions. Blech.
Love Organic Express. Love it love it.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Am I lazy or just super smart?
A box full of organic fruits and veggies dropped off at my door every other Tuesday, plus a few nonperishable grocery items... I'm smart! The produce I receive is waaaay fresher than Whole Foods or Trader Joes, and in fact I believe it's a bit cheaper... plus I don't have to put any effort into it except customize my order, and that's just cause I'm picky... they will send the default list of seasonal stuff if you choose not to go on on line make your own selection. PLUS, they collect your empty cardboard crate when they drop off your new delivery, and they rarely use any plastic bags... that equals less garbage, and Lord knows we don't need any more of that! Their staff is also exceptionally friendly when I've had to call on the phone. I don't know why you wouldn't use Organic Express, especially if you like to cook.

This is like having your own personal shopper for fruits and veggies. And they deliver to your home or where you work. They have a list of all the different types of produce they supply and you can say yes or no to whatever you want, and then they will randomly bring you things you said yes to, every week. The price (basic is 29 bucks a week) is pretty damn good for the amount, selection and the fact it's all organic and delivered to you.
They include a recipe with your edibles. Which have all been great so far. Spot on!
Hopefully, you are not like me, and you know what all the veggies and fruits are. But, uhm, I guess I skipped those days at school and went to McDonald's or something... So, some of this has been very educational for me.
Me: "What the hell is that big brown thing?"
Co-worker : (sighs) That's a yam..
Me: "And what's that? That red thing with big green leaves?"
Co-worker : "Radish"
Me : "Well, I guess you learn something new every day."
Co-worker : "YOU do."

i see a lot of the same produce i get from Organic Express two weeks later at Whole Foods.
it's great if you are too busy to cook every night because everything will last at least a week longer than usual. Also great for the lazy or car-free. incredibly convenient - i still go to the grocery store for eggs, etc. but it takes all the stress out of grocery shopping because i can get most of what i want with no effort!
you can let them select what you get, or you can select your favorites from their website. you can get cereal, juice, pickles...too.
organic express has increased my quality of life more than anything else you can buy with money.

EAT THE KALE! EAT THE KALE! At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about organic delivery services, but I'm a total convert. Bay Area Organic Express (or The Box) helps me make healthy choices. You can choose how frequently you want your fruits / veggies delivered, and you can cancel a shipment if you're going to be away for awhile.
Monthly, we receive a large cardboard (and re-usable) box full of seasonal organic fruits and vegetables. Besides having regular staples there when you need them, the inclusion of less common items like butternut squash, and swiss chard, forces you to eat foods you don't normally eat, but you know are good for you. Not only a source of nutrition, but finding a use for that butternut squash has inspired much creativity in our household.
You can also request not to receive certain items if you harbor a strong dislike for them. Our house prohibits apples and grapes, but we embrace tomatoes and bananas.
God bless the box for making me eat my kale.

BOX: you are awesome.
except one time you were stolen off my front stoop, but that wasn't your fault.
please, though, those-who-bring-the-box, wouldn't you consider labelling what comes from where on the website?
thanks.

Absolutely..the best. I love Organic Express. They have the best and freshest produce. Friendly staff, and I always get a real voice when I call their offices and have a question. They also include recipes with each delivery that I've used and my meals turn out very tasty!
I have been a customer for 2-1/2 years and have always received exceptionally service!

this produce delivery service is ridiculously awesome.
for people who are lazy, but like fresh produce.
for people who work too much, but have a conscience.
for people who like really really really good kiwis.
$29 for a weekly or bi-weekly delivery of about 15 produce varietals, with about 3-5 pieces per fruit or vegetable type. great for weeks you didn't quite make it to the farmer's market.

Terrible customer service! I went on their website to change my delivery dates as I was going to be out of town and needed to skip my weekly delivery. Everything went fine on the website but when I got back from my trip there was a box of rotting produce waiting for me. Called customer service and explained that I had changed the delivery date which they acknowledged. The customer service rep told me that the website doesn't actually cancel the next delivery even though it says it does and told me that it was my mistake that I didn't call in person to change the date. I asked them to refund the delivery and they refused. I told them that it wasn't me but their website that had the problem and requested that my $29 be refunded. They refused even after I told them I would cancel my membership and go to Planet Organics...their competition. They said fine and canceled my membership...Over one $29 delivery that was the fault of their shoddy website. A friend had a similar problem and had the same bad experience with their customer service and switched to Planet Organics. These guys really need to figure their customer experience out. If a customer is unhappy over a delivery that is their faultt they need to take care of it and keep a customer rather than telling them its not their problem.
