I am a former employee of BALA, and happy to provide a review of the services they offer.  BALA is a public interest, non-profit law firm, with attorneys and advocates who can assist qualified people (generally low income) with certain types of cases at no charge.  These types of cases include housing discrimination, evictions, economic benefit programs like SSI and CalWorks, domestic violence, and certain types of other cases.  BALA can also refer people to other resources for cases they cannot take.  The attorneys and advocates at BALA are genuinely interested in helping the public.  If you need a lawyer and cannot afford one, call BALA.  If they can't help you directly, they will refer you to an agency who will.
