We stayed right around the corner from Battery Park and I took morning walks through the area.  You get an awesome view and some wicked wind to go along with it.

The park is sort of hidden away behind the financial district buildings but well worth the extra time it takes to seek it out.

The area set aside as an Irish cultural site is a very interesting and unique take on cultural memorials and worth a few extra minutes.

If you want to see a REAL waterfront view, you haven't seen one unless you've been to Battery Park City. It is definitely one of the hidden treasures of NYC (not really sure how "hidden" it is, but definitely worth taking your friends from out of town to check it out).

There's a number of restaurants along this park where the World Financial Center is, but I have no idea how expensive they are...I'm sure they cost a pretty penny...

While also walking along the waterfront, you'll eventually hit a United Artists theater around N.End Ave & Vesey St. I came here to see the Orphan and while killing time before the movie, we enjoyed the waterfront view :)

Don't like sandy beaches?  Well, get your tan here at Battery Park City.

There is much to offer at Battery Park City, especially the summer.

Take a good thick blanket/waterproof blanket for a day tanning event at Battery park City.  Be free to remove the strings of your bikini to avoid stringy tan marks along your back (nudity is not advised since children are a big part of the parks).  Listen to your mp3 player or read a book while you tan and enjoy the serenity of the park.

You can rollerblade and take a jog around the park.  The ocean view is a fantastic scenic adventure, good for couples chilling away the weekend.

The decor of the park is very clean and really up kept.

I lived in BPC back in the late 90's /early 2000's.  It is the most underrated area of NYC.  Granted it is a long way from every other neighborhood, but it just has a great feel to it.  They need to expedite the rebuilding of the WTC site as it is still an eyesore, but overall it is still a beautiful area!

A few hours on a Friday I  allocate to  myself.....doing what I feel like doing....at the moment...no plans...everything  on a WHIM.....I go where my mind and thoughts take me....mostly WALKING...love to walk....

I left the house pretty early...and had to pass by my Mom and dropped off some yarn  to keep her mind busy ...chrocheting...Its the one thing she loves to do other than watching TV at her ripe age of 87.  She use to be an English/Music  teacher, but now she is done with the books....   I am happy that she is still alert and her mind  still sharp...Thank God ....  I always dread the thought of her having " the long goodbye"  just watched a documentary on Alzheimers and its a pretty  sad. sad disease. My heart goes out to the elderly who suffers and their family...

Are you staying for lunch?
No Mom...
Why not?
I had to go for a walk..
Again?
Mom I do it once a week..
Where are you going this time..
Somewhere in ther city...
Okay...be careful...
What do you want me to do with the yarn? A blouse for you?
No Mom...just Make doilies..
Okay
Are you staying for lunch?
I hugged her and left....for the subway....

I ended up in Battery Park.....25 acres of public park located at the southern tip of  Manhattan facing the New York Harbor.   Nostalgia fills the air....I  walked  through the park.... my old neighborhood ...Great views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island,  Exquisite Building Architecture....Staten Island Ferry...Shrine of Saint Ann Seton.....years ago ..1980 to 1991  to be exact  I use to work in the Financial District.... Wall Street Area......90 Broad St....was the address of the buiilding. Spend a lot of hours just watching joggers...tourist...people walking their dogs... playing music...lovers kissing...watched the ships passing by...family picnics.....kids playing...picture taking... vendors everywhere...

The Sphere...which was a large metal sculpture by a German sculptor name Franz Koenig was recovered from the rubble of the twin towers after the 9/11 attacks and is now rededicated with an eternal flame as a memorial to the victims of 9/11.  It has become a tourist attraction.

After walking along the promenade I stopped...sat on a bench and  gazed up...

There's a Void ... Where...
The Twin Towers use to be...
Sadness overcomes me...
Once again.....
Can't help the tears...
And the Pain...

Ma'am are you okay?
A young gentleman came over me...
Yes I am fine...thank you

I probably stayed for another hour ...when a dog warmed up to me with her owner. Started licking my hands...She must have sensed my sadness...Dogs have this sixth sense... Played with her a little bit ...put on my Ipod and head home......

Friday night? Romantic evening for two?

Battery Park City is certainly one of the venues to consider!  Loew's Theater on 102 North End St (hidden in/around/by the hotel)... restaurants galore... Statue of Liberty, random statues, parks, benches, water view... things that make for a nice, romantic walk.  Gaze into your sweeties' eyes, point at all the people going fishing (really!), remark at the nice lack of tourists, etc.

'Tis nice.

But if you are a sentimental sap like me and things don't work out, can't go back again. ha ha ha.  Too bad.

Sometimes, on days when I call in from work because I've been throwing up with a fever, then I have to go to work (in a taxi) because I forgot that I had a huge meeting, and then I get to work, and continue to have a fever, and then I am told I have to leave work...

I stop off here and just sit by the dog park.  And think.  And play with the dogs if people let me.  Because it makes me feel better.  Like today, when I feel so sick that I can't even see straight and I want to cry.

I'm simple.  Puppies in a pretty park always makes me feel better.

Land that was once the sand and rocks off Staten Island and the hole that was once the start to the World Trade Center and other locations was placed on the side of the island that is now Battery Park City. High rises, small stores and a clean park and riverside area with an unobstructed view of New Jersey's coastline and the Hudson fill this space, along with a fairly nice public park.

Almost no public parking on the street is available, small parking lots in most of the buildings are available underground for mildly outrageous rates. No subways come this way, only two bus routes that I saw.

Due to the lack of transportation, though, it serves as almost it's own community, and with the view out into the Harbor at the south end, it's quite the site for a stroll along the water. Quiet neighborhood at night, too, for those looking for that peace.

"Yeah, this is my sanctuary right here. All this hatred and turmoil swirling around us, but this, this is always right. Struggling, survival, victory, and defeat. Its just a game Doc, but I love it" - Coach Boone (Remember the Titans)

On nice sunny days where I just want to be alone, get some sun on my ghostface killah pasty face, and just chill the next episode, I always come to Nelson A. Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City.

Sometimes, I'm just too lazy to ride my bike all the way uptown to Central Park, Great Lawn, or Sheep's Medow. I ride down the westside downtown instead to Rockefeller Park with my backpack and current book. Nice grass, less tourists, bike friendly, basketball courts, and no stinky horses and carriages.

After going out this past Friday night, Saturday night, and waking up late on Sunday, I needed to do something on my own and feel somewhat relaxed. I rode down, got a spot on the bench facing the Statue of Liberty, and read my current book, "Silent Bob Speaks: The Collected Writings of Kevin Smith". It's easy to read and follow when you're hungover and sometimes funny about his views on the film industry.

See, I love movies, and I love good, original, and creative screenplays such as Pulp Fiction by Tarantino, HEAT by Michael Mann, Good Will Hunting by Matt Damon (I don't believe Ben Affleck co-wrote it), Swingers by Jon Favreau, 25th Hour by David Benioff, The Royal Tenenbaums by Wes Anderson, and Juno by Diablo Cody. Even Stallone wrote Rocky by himself.

I watch these movies and pay attention to the dialogue and character development because I don't know, sometimes I feel like I got all these fictional stories and characters in my head that I want to put down on paper one day. I want to be like that MTA subway worker who wrote, "Brooklyn's Finest", which comes out next year. But then again, that's like me saying, shit, I can score at least one basket on Kobe Bryant.

So I always gotta remind myself, "Don't talk about it, be about it".

I used to come here when I was little for soccer games, way back when the Towers still stood and I was still small enough to play in the playground there.  Running all over the grass and through the World Financial Center was like an adventure in and of itself.  I would cross the covered walkway over the West Side Highway, past Stuyvesant, and along the water to get to the games.  Some of my best memories are from walking along the waterline and standing next to the globe, craning my neck up to see the top of 1 and 2 WTC.  I would be really hard-pressed to think of a feeling more amazing than walking through the park on a summer day.

I am so fortunate to have grown up in this beautiful neighborhood, and now I live here as an adult.  10 years ago, taxicabs barely knew how to get here, and 5 years ago the average New Yorker only had a vague sense of where Battery Park City was ("It's near the World Trade Center").  Obviously, the neighborhood suffered a major trauma and setback with the falling of the Towers, but it has bounced back vigorously.  I was in college when 9/11 happened and my mom was luckily out of town too, so we came out of it physically unscathed (emotional scars are another matter).  But when I asked her if she'd consider leaving BPC because of 9/11, she answered adamantly, "No, of course not.  This is our home."

So yes, BPC is my home.  My city within New York City.  True, it doesn't have all the cool ethnic flavorings of older, more established neighborhoods, and everything pretty much shuts down by 11, but it's a great place to come home to after a long day.  It's quiet at night, the streets are lined with trees, there are several parks and playgrounds throughout, and you get a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  Come summer time, you can't beat taking a stroll or bike ride along the Esplanade, having a picnic on a grassy knoll or enjoying a free concert sponsored by the River to River Festival.  It's like a little escape from the regular hustle & bustle of the city.

These days, the Esplanade is packed with tourists, especially during the summer.  Mostly runover from those checking out the former WTC site.  Who would have thought that a neighborhood so beautiful could only be blocks away from a tragedy so ugly.

"About Living In Battery Park City"

As I write this, I've resided in BPC for the last three years.  I'm moving back to the Village in August.  I've had enough of the BPC life, for this lifetime.

In general, BPC is a truly world-class neighborhood.  BPC can be an absolutely fabulous place to live, perhaps even permanently, for some people.  And, it can be a pretty damn nice place to live, for a little while, for a few of us.  (Apparently I fall into the "few of us" category).  More importantly, however, If you ever do live in BPC, you need to be aware of BPC's social environment.  In fact, you need to do more than simply be aware of it.  Beware of it.

But, the 'beware' thing relates to only part of my BPC experience.  Before addressing that point, let's broaden the canvas a bit...

When I first relocated to NYC (about five years ago) I needed to be near my Dad, who lived in Queens... so I lived in Queens, for about a year.  And I averaged roughly one and a half round-trips to the city during that year, because I loved being in the city.  I'd get questions about my frequent trips, along the lines of:  "Isn't that really inconvenient for you?"  And I'd answer that it was a lot less inconvenient that flying in from Austin (where I lived until moving here).

Then I sublet a cool little four-floor walk-up on Third Street (near Sullivan).  Just one step outside my building put me right in the middle of an abundant supply of real NYC.  Fond memories of Sunday early-morning coffee retrieval excursions, with heavily littered, soured beer smelling streets giving me their familiar greeting... as I took care not to land my foot in the occasional urine stream, emanating from the occasional passed-out street person.  Pure poetry.

I moved to a forty-third floor luxury apartment with a panoramic water view in a luxury building in BPC, after the sublet.  Huge apartment.  Full kitchen.  Two and a half baths.  Separate shower and tub in each full bath. Uniformed doormen and concierges at the front and rear doors.  Maintenance staff on duty early 'til late.  Gym.  Pool.  Valet service.  Parking garage (also valet).  Building intercom system.  Washers and dryers on every floor.  Garbage chutes.  Recycling program.  Multiple, daily FedEx pick-ups at the front desk.  Etcetera.

At first I was in major culture shock.  And it lasted a while.  I moved there for two primary reasons:  1.) I got a sweet deal involving a roommate, who already had an extended lease at a good rate; and  2.) I fell in love with the view immediately.  And I still love the view.  Every day I want to see it, practically up in the clouds as I watch, I can see sun set behind the river.  I've never taken that for granted, and that's what I'll miss far more than anything else about BPC.

You know, it's funny, because people still ask me why I live in a place so remote from the real Manhattan.  "Yeah but you have to catch a train or a cab to go anywhere" they'll say, and then ask, "Isn't that inconvenient?"  And I reply, "Not as inconvenient as taking the train in from Queens every day."

One of the first things my BPC roommate told me was to be careful in my interactions with BPC residents.  She said it's like a small town, people gossip, they're judgmental, it's not uncommon for them to band together and ostracize someone... and stuff like that.  She made the very salient point that, regardless of my opinion toward any of it, being critically observed and ultimately evaluated by the neighborhood was inevitable... and an unfavorable assessment would add certain and consistent unpleasantness to my BPC existence.

I passed-off her advice as probably just being a 'girl thing.'  I figured she must have gotten mixed-up in a neighborhood game of gossip and side-choosing, and came out on the bad end of it.  And, of course, it turns-out that she knew what she was talking about.  BPC is not like "Manhattan."  It's more like Mayberry.  But, like I said, that's just part of the equation.  And, overall, there are a lot of cool and interesting people in Mayberry.  Just remember that's where you are, if you get involved in the local scene.

One last thing I'd like to mention is the downtown express buses.  They're the smaller (more comfortable), airport shuttle types of buses.  They run regularly, all around Lower Manhattan.  You can catch one at South End and Rector Place, and be at the Seaport in 5 minutes.

PS:  My rating for BPC (as a place to live) is actually 3.5 stars.  I rounded up, since that option isn't available.

High rise luxury apartments overlooking the water, tranquil areas to run and relax, a nice movie theatre, Battery Park City is an awesome place to visit.  I wouldn't live there.  It's too far from any subway.  You have to cross West Side Hwy to get to the nearest subway.  It seems like a city all in it's own.  It's not my favorite neighborhood in Manhattan but jt's a great place to find places to stroll and get away from it all.

I still don't quite fit in since I'm missing the crucial components: 1. a dog, and 2. a stroller or two. But if I hold my breath and stand really still, no one will notice. I love coming home to this area because it helps to remind me that my life is sometimes decently sane.

Home sweet home!

Still top 3 places for me to walk around on a nice day. Its just so......clean and tucked away; the combination of tall, modern buildings and clusters of "everything you need": grocery store dry cleaners newstand random deli or something. Its just so different than other areas, both during the day, and during the night I really enjoy the quiet and walking around an area by myself.

Of note: for smaller filmmakers out there, Battery Park City has its own authority when it comes to filming, so be sure to get permission specifically from them before hand, not from the mayor's office in midtown.

I would come here to jog or take walks here all the time during my college days at Pace University.  It was my safe haven for quiet time away from the hussle and bussle of every day life.  It's free and at night you get to see the beautiful sunset.  On a clear day you can see the Statute of Liberty.  At times with the weather permitting it can be packed with tourists and locals jogging, biking, dog walking, or children playing at the playgrounds.

About three years ago, BPC hosted ballet in the park.  There were respectives from the Geoffry, American, NY, Boston and one more I cannot remember.  I fell in love with the park and angel corella from the american ballet that day, he was so on point I was hooked by his energy.  We had great seat by luck and circumstance to watch these amazing dancers perform.  Best, it was free.  I hope they bring it back again!

A beautiful area by the river.  It's a lovely walk from the World Financial Center to the Staten Island ferry.  People walk their dogs all over the place.  We even saw this one lady jerk her dog up these cylindrical steps (with space in between, kind of like the multicolored light pillars at LAX, but smaller).  It was really sad.  The first time, I think she wanted her dog to jump, but it didn't, so she just pulled it's harness, and it flew through the air and smacked its head/face into the pillar.  How freaking sad.  She did it over and over again.  Obviously, the dog didn't want to jump.  What a bad owner.  Minus one star for oblivious pet abuse.

While it is very pretty here, it is a pain in the ass when friends live here and I have to try to trek down from the upper west to visit them for occasions like baby showers with cab drivers who assure me they know where they are going except really have no clue and then get pissed off when I get pissed off. Whew. Anyway. Pretty, albeit windy when it's fall and winter and spring, so really best for a few months of the year. I'll visit when needed, but I would never want to live here.

A very pleasant area even though it's only steps away from a busy commerical finanical sector. Condos surround the area, among many trees and green. Not to also mention the park that is nested near the edge of Hudson River. Glorious views of New Jersey and Newark skyscrapers. Very civilized, upper - to upper middle class resides here. A decent movie theater, and a few trendy spots. Definitely stroll through the park. Pets are welcomed and they will enjoy the park. It's a couple of blocks of walking from the closest train station.

A beautiful place to take a walk on a nice day, but I have one question for all of you who live there...  Why would you want to pay so much money for a  view of Jersey???  Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful area, but the view sucks.  I would rather live by the Brooklyn Promenade and wake up in the morning with a view of lower Manhattan.  But that's just me...  to each his own.

such a nice area to sit and people watch or stroll around in. for people who are fans of mass amounts of cuteness (i.e. babies and dogs) YOU WILL LOVE IT. i can't tell you how happy it makes me to have cute babies waving at me while dogs romp around. though it is kind of depressing to see so many people exercising (seriously, who goes running in the middle of february?!!?), there's plenty of benches to sit and cheer those ambitious athletes on. it's also kind of fun to watch all the businesspeople running to catch the ferry at the end of the day. there's nothing i love more (other than cute babies and dogs) than seeing a 50 year old man making a mad dash towards a boat with prada briefcase in one hand and Wall Street Journal in the other. it's great.
