Went to Basil the other night after reading all the good reviews from my fellow Yelpsters. Eh, I don't know. Maybe I went on an off night, but it was pretty inconsistent.
They do have interesting seasonal specials, and I got one of the drink specials - a basil lemonade (absolut citron and basil-infused lemonade). That was pretty unique and got me psyched up for the rest of the meal, which unfortunately was kind of a let-down. I had the tomato soup with its mini grilled cheese sandwich bite (pssst...Stephen Starr does this better at Jones) and a salad. Not bad, but didn't blow me away either. Another person in our party had the special shrimp pizza, which was covered in an alfredo-ish sauce and deemed to be too greasy. The people who got ravioli liked their entrees, though.
I'm never one to shy away from dessert, but that was definitely the worst part of the meal. How can you screw up sorbet? Apparently, Basil has figured out how, with the mysterious half gooey liquid/ half rock solid mess that it calls sorbet. Another person made the mistake of ordering the banana cream pie martini. Do you like rubbing alcohol topped with two cups of reddi-whip? Huh, that's funny, me neither.
Basil is a really pretty restaurant, though. Maybe it's better for lunch.Listed in: Chester County Eats

For a while I would go there at least once a month on business lunches. Good salads, sandwiches and soups. I love their crab bisque and usually get that as a soup and 1/2 sandwich combo.
The crabcakes and brick oven pizzas are pretty good too. -

I don't know why... but for some reason I really wanted to hate Basil. Maybe it's because it's one of those overpriced places where people "do lunch" or because it feels like the spinoff of Nectar and Tango that it is or because it just seemed like it was a generic corporate lunch spot.
Anyways... all that baggage aside, I've really liked my 2 meals there & would gladly recommend it the next time someone else offers to buy me lunch :-) The menu is traditional/limited new american (salmon salad, halibut, burgers, etc.) - but, everything is done very well. It's huge inside and has a nice comfortable feel - and they were great with our toddler, too. -

I met with a friend at Basil Bistro for lunch two years ago.
The dining room was filled full of business folks conducting meetings or schmoozing. It's a large room, so there were a lot of people. And a lot of noise. Through the din, I could still hear my lunch mate, which is always a Good Thing.
The Iight oil and bread were pretty tasty but sadly the most memorable part of the meal. An appetizer of clams we had were okay. Our desserts weren't bad (my tort was pretty sweet), and my entree (mashed potatoes, peas, onions, and maybe chicken? uh, you want to know what I had? I don't remember either) was alright. I remember it being a little greasy. Our server (Jeanie) was fine.
The bathrooms are nice. I think the owner of Nectar owns/owned this place, and it shows. There's lots of polish in Basil's decor. I caught a glimpse of the wine cellar, and the private banquet area downstairs as well. Try it if you like, your mileage may vary. -

Gone Gone Gone . . . .
Basil is no more. The building is vacant and the property sports a commercial real estate offering sign.
