7 reviews for Basa Modern Vietnamese
We really enjoyed our dinner at Basa. I had their special - Diver Scallops - which were definately 5 star.
My partner had the Shaking Beef. It was very disappointing. We had to dock a star for that.
The service was great. We were there when it was not very busy. I think there were 3 other tables.
The setting was very comfortable, and we were both amused that we both took a few seconds to have to figure out how to turn on the sink in the Mens Room.
I really can't wait to go back.
Basa always offers fresh well-prepared Vietnamese Cuisine with a French twist. The Scallop entrees are always full of savory combinations of spices and flavorings and the staples like ginger noodles and papaya salad, just to name a few are always fresh and complement the wonderful entrees. We'll return anytime we want to enjoy a meal loaded with surprises, freshness, and wonderful combinations of goodness.
This restaurant is awesome. The food, the drinks, the atmosphere. It is a little pricey, but you get your money's worth! Check out more of my review at my blog: http://wannabeafoodcri...
Brothers Steven Ton, general manager, and Michael Ton, Chef and owner, run this wonderful recent addition to the Louisville restaurant palate. It seems their family continues to corner the market on good Vietnamese food in the 'ville. I first experienced Vietnamese food as a kid at their aunt Coco Tran's restaurant, Cafe Mimosa (she also owns the Eggroll Machine). I remember her fondly gracing our table with a visit every now and then. The Brothers Ton have created their new locus near family - on Frankfort Avenue, right near Uncle Huong Tran, who owns Zen Garden next door.
Over the years I have lived and eaten in many metropolitan cities and remain a dedicated fan of Vietnamese food. Basa does a great job on their dishes, but don't expect the typical flavors of your run-of-the-mill American-Vietnamese restaurant. Steve Ton has voiced a desire to use local bounty including venison, Kentucky bison and lamb. Dishes will vary with the local vegetables that are in-season. This commitment to freshness pays off.
The Shaking Beef consisted of very tender, juicy cuts of tenderloin with a tangy, citrus-laden sauce. The salad rolls were fresh and minty and the peanut sauce was just right. The service was friendly and efficient. The ambiance was nice - bistromellow and shadowy with earth tones, tasteful photos, and a hint of feng shui.
More to come when I get a break ...
We went to Basa based on the reviews below but had a two star experience. The restaurant is beautiful and the menu is good - the Vietnamese crepe was decadent and delicious. Service was just awful -- our waitress (Katherine?) ignored us and the food was nearly an hour late. My bf and I figured there was a group but it would have been nice for our waitress to have just come over and said 'Hey we're sorry we're an hour late with you food but enjoy another glass of wine." Nothing, she ignored us and even when we tried to flag her down, she just kept going. My dinner tasted wonderful but my boyfriend's fish was overcooked. Definitely not worth the money. Proof, although a bit more expensive, is the best restaurant and eating experience in KY.
This is the best restaurant in Louisville at the moment. Everything I tastes was delicious. The only nitpick I have was that the acoustics were pretty terrible; the room got very noisy even when the place wasn't that full.
Delicious food. Not one complaint from a table of six and we all got something different. That says SOMETHING about a restaurant. Add this to one of my "must go's" when I go home!
