Rock on Baruir!! Not to be missed are other delectable items in the store: including peanut butter, jelly, dried fruits- apricots, mango, bananas, pumpkin seeds and assorted candies. I strongly recommend the Colombian and Ethiopian Blend coffees.

New York, NY
My initial reaction to Baruir's was not one of instant fandom. After a local suggested I try the iced coffee with cream instead of milk, I am now a devout follower of the Baruir cult. And the iced coffee cubes are a nice touch. Baruir makes my morning sprint to work just a little bit brighter.
Sure, their hours are awkward and the staff isn't always outwardly amicable, but Baruir's rings of old world charm in an up-and-coming neighborhood. And their kitty is really cute :) -

Dear Baruir,
As a longtime customer, I loved you the way a child loves their happy meal - that is until I met Joe (Coffee) and it was ALL OVER.
However, you are still the epitome of Arabic coffee and will be in my heart forever.
Love,
Sen-Pei -

Staying with friends close by, I asked for recommendations for someplace local to get a good cappuccino and their word was Baruir. So I got up the next morning, walked over and was surprised that Baruir doesn't really even have a proper espresso machine--just a cheap consumer model. But, whatever, I'm used to lots of different styles of coffee and they had cappuccino on the menu, so I ordered one.
Their method of making a cappuccino consisted of pouring brewed coffee (not espresso) into cold milk, and then frothing the whole lot. It made for an okay cup of coffee with milk, but not a cappuccino, and not even a cup of coffee I would rush back for.
But they were roasting beans fresh when I went in and the aroma was to-die-for, so maybe Baruir is more of a beans place. I would definitely return to try some of their other coffee drinks--I have a feeling that italian coffee isn't really in their wheelhouse and I probably ordered the wrong thing. -

Coffee is fantastic but the staff can be rude.
The owner is unappreciative and gruff, and it rubs off on his staff.
I guess they figure the coffee is so good, customer service isn't important. -

I do not own one of those fancy internet, does everything a computer can cellphones. BUT if i did you'd see 300 Check-In stars
I love this place. I dont even live near here, but I find myself driving to this neighborhood all too often and just HAVE to go in
Yes, everyone raves over the coffee ice cubes. Brilliant, yes.
BUT did you know the wife of the store owner is Colombian and the husband is Armenian?
hence, awesome coffee with awesome dried goods to sell.

oh, and btw- this isnt really a coffee shop as its a store. theres only one seat, so don't bring your laptop thinking you're going to sip a cup o joe and pleasantly work on your excel doc, cuz it aint that sort of place. buy your coffee and go -

ASTORIA, NY
As an Arab, I was yenning to come here, and it didn't disappoint. Me and the fella sat down for some coffee and melbun (turkish delight). I made the mistake of asking for cream and sugar in my coffee, and true to Middle East tradition, the guy laid on the sugar like WWII had just ended. I didn't mind too much, though. The coffee was still good and strong and shone through the cream and sugar pretty nicely.
They had a few different varieties of melbun to choose from, and at the recommendation of the girl behind the counter, we had their pistachio variety. It's made without rose water, which I wasn't used to, but it was still pleasantly sweet, doused in powdered sugar, and delightfully chewy.
We sat in the back near the meat! They don't usually let customers sit down in the store I guess, but they said we could. They were incredibly helpful and answered every one of my questions.
I've been back to buy spices since, and they've got a great little selection of tinned and imported spices and snacks. Love it! -
Review from Nick B.
If you go in at the right time (usually mornings) you can be treated to the owner roasting fresh coffee beans in the front of the store the way he has been doing it since the 1960's. They are knowledgeable and the prices are very competitive. recently, they have been having trouble getting beans they have had for a while, but hopefully their supply will improve. They care an assortment of Euro treats and foods, but it is the coffee that will bring you back. And yes, they use coffee ice cubes in their iced coffee. Anyone else do that?

My friend goes here to buy coffee beans. I don't drink coffee, so I have no emotional reaction to our trip here.
But when I get inside, I find a large selection of dried fruit. Who doesn't love a large selection of dried fruit? I bought reasonably priced dried apples and dried bananas. Yum.
Cute, convenient, friendly store. I like! -
Review from Ivette F.
Queens, NY
Okay, after being here for almost 2 months I've realized that this place isn't that great. So they have a sign out front that states "Try our espresso and cappuccinos" only to have the women working there (not the owner. Not sure who she is) pout when I ask for a cappuccino... literally. SHE POUTS lol and she pouts because she has no clue how to make one and she freaks out! At one point the owner had to step in and correct her because she was doing it all wrong. I'm sorry, but if you work in a coffee shop and you have a sign that says to try your cappuccinos then maaaaybe you shouldn't huff n' puff when someone orders one. And this didn't happen just once, it happened every time I ordered one and she was beginning to make me feel like a piece of crap for ordering one. Also they have a $20 credit limit! What the hell is that all about? Honestly I had better coffee at a colombian bakery shop across the street. Hole in the walls... you'd be surprised.

Please, if you sell coffee, you must to be open at 7am. -

5 stars and a big ass HIGH FIVE for one of the best iced coffees in the city.
I live right by this place and go several times a week. Great selection. As Christine C said, COFFEE ICE CUBES! Why isn't everyone doing this? It never waters down! It's the gift that keeps on giving!Listed in: Life on the Sunnyside

Stopped in the other day to get some iced coffee...cause I heard it was great here and it's slim pickins to get the good stuff in this nabe.
I was terribly disappointed....smelled wonderfully of roasted coffee but that coffee itself had no taste...maybe it was a bad day...maybe there was too much milk in the cup. They do make iced coffee cubes which is brilliant.
I'm upset their coffee wasn't better...so upset that I'll give them a few more chances to prove me wrong. 2.50 for a small 3 bucks for a large.
Nice service though. -

The patriarch of this place looks like a cross between Peter Lorre and George Hamilton. Additionally, he's very friendly.
Also, the coffee is solid and affordable.Listed in: My Neighborhood

What a treat to be able to buy beans roasted in your neighborhood! This is the only place I buy coffee now. I really like flavored coffee, and Baruir's is very good--not weird and chemical-y tasting like some of the grocery store options. And: the price is right. Love the grocery options, too: dried beans and fruit, preserves, cheeses, etc.

Review from Melissa S.
San Francisco, CA
They roast their own coffee (awesome), not a huge selection of European and Mediterranean products (not so awesome), and a credit minimum of $20 (definitely, definitely far away from awesomeness). I haven't made any of the Ethiopian coffee I bought, so maybe that will redeem Baruir from the 3 star rating I'm giving them.

Review from Dan W.
Sunnyside, NY
This place is the best for affordable coffee. They have a wide selection of freshly roasted beans to buy whole or freshly ground. I love the Mocha-Java.
In the summer, come here for the ice coffee. Their ice cubes are made of coffee! The owners and staff are incredibly nice and helpful.
This is also a good spot to find specialty goods like canned foul mudammas and candied fruits. -
Review from Glen R.
Manhattan, NY
Armenian/Colombian owned shop with eastern coziness is famed for their coffee, once winning The New York Press's best coffee roaster award. I've had good and I've had bad here, but it's always wonderful to visit. If you're lucky you'll get to see the roaster in action! Sample some of the sundry dried foods on offer, such as their jumbo dates. It's a great place!

Baruir's is a great little secret in my neighborhood which is definitely lacking in places to eat. It's a small little coffee shop that's been open since 1966 that also carries middle eastern and European foods. In the summer you can get iced coffee which is served with ice cubes made of coffee, and that means no diluting, just coffee taste. The coffee is really good, perfectly roasted. its nice when you have other options besides Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks.

Sunnyside, NY
Baruir's coffee is excellent. It's great to see an actual roasting machine in the store! The scent of fresh-ground coffee in there is intoxicating. They grind my Columbian Supremo to a fine powder, hand it to me with a smile, and there's never any waiting; take a hike, Starbucks! Oh, also, you can get fantastic nuts, dried fruits, jams, chocolate, sodas and other extremely unusual Armenian/Romanian/Bulgarian/Turkish treats.

This is a fantastic, cheap shop in which you can buy perfectly roasted coffee beans. They have plenty of varieties and will grind it for you if you like. They also have a small selection of European sweets, cheeses, and canned goods. The staff is efficient and friendly, which isn't always great. I'd prefer they slow it down a bit so I could linger. The smell of roasting coffee is heaven.

Whenever I pass by Sunnyside, I got to stop at Baruir's for my Armenian cooking ingredients, the delicious Armenian lahmajun which my sons love. I always have a dozen in the freezer. Everything is fresh.

I simply love this place because they will grind your coffee so fine that you can make Turkish coffee. I only drink Turkish coffee at home and so many stores do not have the equipment to grind the beans so fine. They also sell other European necessities. I buy the fillo dough, feta cheese and sometimes the dried apples. Everything is yummy.

I'm almost sad someone already gave that secret away, but the ppl who work there are really nice and I'd like to see them get business. I'm sure once ppl see their prices and taste what they have, they'll have no problem gettin more ppl hooked.

Good beans. I actually favor the flavored - the Irish Cream, Hazelnut and Chocolate Raspberry are especially good. Warning - the roast seems to be dark no matter what they say. Be ready for a punch! Since the roaster is right near the entrance, and is often on, this place smells like heaven. The Armenian-Romanian-Colombian family that own this place are real old school. On occassion I will pick up a cup on my way to the subway. IF the pot of coffee is fresh, the stuff is good. They use a regular old 8 or 10 cup machine and leave the carafe on the burner. Oh no! Make sure you look before you buy. One other gripe - many a time I have bought an iced coffee, it was served in a -grrrrrr! - styrofoam cup. No can do.
