Historical landmark and an Excellent time?

Count me in...and a diving board too!!!

I came here 3-4 times a week during the Summer.

Free swim from 6-7am and 9-10pm if I'm not mistaken.
    Night swims were badass!!!!

Bring your snorkel gear and an underwater flashlight and learn about this aquatic ecosystem. Fish, turtles, salamanders, and all kinds of interesting things. Like lost jewelry, personal items, etc..

Season passes are definitely worth the money if you frequent this Aquatic Dream site..

Learn to swim, practice free diving, or float the pool. And if you don't want to swim you could always gain some color on the HUGE lawns.

Can't wait to walk through those gates again!!!

If you're going to visit...go now!  When the water is soooo cold but the outside temperature is even colder it tricks your brain into thinking the water is warm.  See???  Cool trick huh?

Natural area, lots of birds, fish, and crazies to look at.  It's nice to visit after a hike around Town Lake (Sorry Lady Bird...I just can't).

I swam here yesterday (1/15/12) and the water actually felt warm compared to the air temperature.  Amazing how the water holds its temp even when the air temp is chilly - shows you the power of these springs.

I was amazed by the amount of aquatic life - very different experience than swimming in the summer.   Big groups of striped bass and perch, and tall water grass.   If you swim up the west side (main entrance side) or center of the pool in the deep end, some of the bass are protecting nests.  I got a couple of bites.  Better to swim up the east side (grassy hill side) in the deep end.

One more very cool thing: no admission fee thru the end of February.

Definitely one of my favorite things about Austin!

A natural springs swimming pool set amongst trees, rocks and beauty. I've only been here a few times, but it's a must for a hot day. I go at night when it's free (after 10 pm for the last hour I believe), so the only cost to me is just getting there! I've never gone when you have to pay, but apparently it's pretty cheap. It can get pretty crowded here during the summer, but I've never had issues with other patrons- everyone is respectful and generally non-annoying.

One of the things I like most about this place is that there are topless women swimming/sunbathing and other parents with their children here. Teaching kids that their bodies are nothing to be ashamed of and don't need to be hidden 24/7 FTW!

Just remember that because this water is fed from the springs, so it's pretty much a constant 68 degrees, which can feel a bit chilly for local Texans who don't know what a real winter is. (Illinois, represent!)

You can't bring in any of your own drinks, but this place is wonderfully litter-free, so I'm okay with that.

When I'm older and have children, I'll definitely be dragging their butts to Barton Springs.

Truly a well-kept, well-maintained beautiful natural landscape and spring. Simply an Austin tradition. This place is wonderful for taking a dip or swimming in the naturally cold spring for a $3 PASS (but CLOSED ON THURSDAYS for maintenance)! On crowded days, the frustrating parking makes me want to revoke a star. But this place is just so naturally beautiful and perfectly maintained I can't give it anything less than 5 stars...and the hundreds of 5 star reviews before me don't lie. This place is worth devoting a whole day at. Bring your own towels to put on the grass and then another one to dry off from the freezing water.

Apparently this natural spring has been around, literally, hundreds of thousands of years. Austin weather and the hills just make this place all worthwhile. Austin is so pretty. In addition to this natural spring, I love Mt. Bonnell in general. Well, anyway, definitely don't waste your time watching a bunch of stupid bats come out from under a bridge. Really, that touristy event is anticlimactic at best...go to Barton Springs for super cheap. There's no litter anywhere and it feels awesome to move from 103 degrees weather to a naturally cold pool. There's also little stone paths around the area. I haven't seen any ants on the grass hills but keep that in mind and bring a towel to sit on.

They have draconian rules about no pets or bringing in food or coolers. At the same time, that's why it's so clean and well-maintained. I've only been during the summers. It can get packed during the summer but as homegirl Christina B. points out, Nov. & Feb is still fine bc temp of pool remains naturally cold and the weather's still nice. I hear not as packed in the mornings or on non-summer time periods.

The water is cold all year round so definitely a great summer spot. Just look at the photos, you don't need me to tell you this is definitely worth killing a day on. But this litter-free, clean hippie-mecca is well worth the trip. Right outside the entrance gate, they also offer snow cones and water bottles in a little area outside the park. But you can't bring your food or water bottle inside the park for re-entry.

    Bring sunscreen!

AND DON'T FORGET TO BRING A TOWEL! - south park

This place is my heaven on earth.  I routinely drop by here on hot summer days after work and jump in to cool off before going home feeling like a million bucks.  I truly believe the water here has theraputic qualities, because I've never left here without feeling like I just spent the day going through a day spa complete with full bidy massage.  This past new year's day I just did my first polar bear plunge....So glad I did because it was awesome.  Increadibly refreshing and exhilerating.

I don't spend enough time here and that stops now. I forget how fabulous Barton Springs is.

    What I love:
    The deliciously cold water
Dirt and sand begone! Only grassy knolls here
The spreading trees and dappled sunlight
Crazy hippies with their drum circles
Crazy yogis tuning into mother earth
Fresh college kids just excited to be away from homework
    Psuedo intellectuals reading kafka
Fish in the water, perfect for snorkeling
    The late night swims
That it's $3 and big enough for half the population of the city

Just a gorgeous way to spend a gorgeous day in this inimitable city of ours.

I've been here several times since I moved to Austin in June, and I highly recommend checking this place out. The pool results from a natural spring, which holds the water at the same cool temperature year round, and has been adapted to public use by the installation of a concrete swimming pool border complete with diving board and entry ladders. The pool is surrounded by several acres of grassy lawn which is well maintained, but has a very natural feel to it. There's plenty of trees to shade yourself under, and plenty of lawn with full sun.

There's something for everyone here. You'll see people from all walks of life at this welcome retreat from the heat of summer from families to college students to hipsters, hippies, yogis, and women who aren't fond of tan lines. If you enjoy people watching, this is as good as it gets.

Some things I'd like to see changed in the future: Allow people to bring coolers in. I understand the desire to rid the city of liability related to people drinking on the premises, but c'mon! Also,  become dog friendly. This is Austin, right?

Regardless of my misgivings about certain policies at the pool, I'm still giving it a 5 star rating. The Barton Springs Pool has become engrained in the culture of Austin, and it is truly a unique experience. The water is cold, and the grass is green. Come on out and relax.

With 238 reviews, I don't think there's much that I can add to better justify that you should visit this place.

After moving to Austin during a double-digit day 100+ degree heat wave, this was a welcome relief for this newly christened Austinite.  With that being said, I have been here several times since my first visit and can see how it's become such a cherished asset for the City of Austin.

Great for people watching, especially the young hot, UT coeds. The algae can be a bit overwhelming for the squeamish but you move past it... literally.

Great respite for this summer time heat!

I love this place! I wish I visited Barton Springs every day during my trip to Austin.

If you're staying in the area, check with your hotel, they may have passes for you. If not, just pay the $3 and have a good time.

I visited Barton Springs on a Monday morning around 10:00 AM. When the weather is super hot it's better to go early. There is free parking but it fills up quickly, especially on the weekends.

There is a lot of space around the pool to lay your things and yourself down. The water is chilly but nothing too extreme. It actually felt really good to get in the 60ish degree water on a day that topped out at 105*. There are a number of ladders to get in/out of the pool, a diving board and a beach-like section which allows you to walk into the water.

If you like to swim laps this is perfect for you! Be sure to bring your goggles and swim cap. I could see FISH at the bottom in the deep end! The water is sooooo clean. I wish there was a place like this somewhere in the Bay Area.

    I love this pool! Jizz!

AWESOME! I love Barton Springs Pool. I swam here years ago and was back again this past weekend. It was better than I had remembered. I love that there is no chlorine and it is spring fed and 68 degrees year round. I went on one of the hottest days of the year (late July) and the water was crisp and cool. If you get cold, just lay out for a bit and jump, dive, or gingerly walk back in.

Logistics: $3 to park on the weekends.  Get there early (before noon), because you'll get prime parking and it'll be much less crowded. We got there just before noon on a Saturday and got rock star parking right up front. The parking is for the pool, train, food stand, and the park in general. if you get there too late, you'll end up hiking a ways with your towels, floats, etc... It was $3 for adults to get in and then less for seniors and children.

We went with friends who have a toddler. She was worried about getting in and out of the water with her small child because of the algae.  Well, those of you who might have a bum knee, small children, or are just generally worried about slipping, there are steps! We used to walk to the far side of the pool, but that's where all the dangerous entries are to the pool. If you want steps and even a wheelchair ramp, stay on the entrance side. There is even a wheelchair ramp down to the pool! This place is completely handicapped accessible. The steps and the ramp into the water have a handrail and made getting in and out a snap for my friend and her baby. Also, wear water shoes of some sort. The bottom is completely uneven, rocky, and quite slippery in places.

Yes, you can bring your float, noodles, pool games, or whatever with you, but you can only use them at the ends of the pool. The middle of the pool is kept float free for the diving board.

The whole experience was so easy. So, if you have any trepidation about getting in and out of the pool because of a handicap or small children, don't worry!

If you find yourself in Austin in reasonably good swimsuit shape and you like the outdoors, Barton Springs Pool ($3 entry/adult) is a must see!  The pool is built around a channel of Barton Creek and features refreshing 68-70 degree water year round.  As locals tell it, it's feels deliciously cool in the summer and soothingly warm in the winter.  Even in 100+ degree heat, I found it icy for my taste, so the best way to make your initial foray would be to jump off the convenient diving board.  Be sure to use caution when swimming around there as some of the little kids get MASSIVE air when they cannonball off!

There's plenty of shade under the ample trees surrounding the pool, so bring your blanket and a steamy read and prepare to enjoy some chill time.  If you have a mind to see some local Barton Springs Salamanders in their natural habitat, consider bringing your mask and snorkel!

PARTING THOUGHT: Barton Springs Pool is quite popular during the summer, so I would recommend getting there early on the weekend (around 10am) to avoid the line!  Afterwards, you can go treat yourself to a real Texas style lunch!

Let's hear it for the trees. Without whose shade we'd all be in a much more burnt state. Some branches hang low enough to create a sort-of sense of privacy while shielding from harsher afternoon rays.

I feel more connected with nature here than with most other outdoor sports. Having bits of water stargrass pulled out of my hair over lunch or falling off my person much later certainly contribute, but so does the feel of slowly swishing your feet back and forth through the pool's plant growth, or walking barefoot on dirt as you head back to your tree-cave. Something about the direct contact of skin to earth is both nostalgic and humbling. Lay back, dry off and drift back to childhood water adventures.

    Happy Independence Day, America.

I started going here 25 years ago and I'm glad to see it hasn't lost its charm.

To me, Barton Springs is the absolute epitome of Austin....concern about the Edward's Aquifer/endangered salamanders, hippies ( I LOVE hippies!!) and nude (or at least topless) people.  There's even a museum there explaining the aquifer and the native critters that inhabit the area.

Parking can be a bear during peak times.  So, go early or during the week.  There's a snack area outside the gates of the swimming area.

It's affordable ($4 I think) and, like others said, it makes for some awesome people-watching!  My friend and I saw a Jesus imposter there...standing so proudly gazing over his flock!  Such a colorful hodgepodge of people.  I love it.

Wow, I can't believe I have lived in Austin 21 years and have never reviewed this place! Barton Springs is the coldest thing that will ever happen to your nips, and yes: it is VERY hard to get in if you inch your way in so JUMP! With that being said, the springs itself are beautiful, crystal clear, and quite large for a Texan spring. The springs are a great place to show touristy types and family the real Austin; full of "keep Austin weird" types.

Tip: Bring your snorkel because it is really cool to look around under there, and there are some tiny fish and salamanders and other animals.

Tip 2:  They offer free swimming after 9pm, and it's only $3 to get in other times. They have a diving board, so it's fun for kids and adults.

There's tons of space to lay out and lounge, bring a book, or an iPod. Of course, remember your sunscreen and hopefully you'll remember your top and bottoms unless your part of the "keep Austin hangin' out with their wang out" crew. I joke, I think pants are required. More like...hanging out with your tatas out. I believe Austin keeps it legal for women to be topless almost anywhere. I found this out at one of my first metal concerts when I was 14, there was a lady walking down the street with her jugs hanging out, pretty hilarious. But yes, the springs are a fabulous place to come during the summer, I haven't been in a while so I should practice what I preach!

A little back story first...I remember coming here when I was just a little kid with the family. Back when it was practically free to get in, back when it didn't cost you to park, back when it wasn't overly crowded and constantly covered with nasty debris, back when they closed it for a long time to protect the endangered lungless salamander than lives in the springs. When I was in elementary school, the summer camp would bring us here for the day. It also happened to be the first time I saw boobies. The bathrooms had an opening in the roof where women would lay out inside the bathroom freely nude.

Fast forward to present day. The springs are relief from the Texas heat, with its consistent 68º temperature. Its best to bite the bullet and just jump in, instead of trying to slowly accustom your body to the chilly waters. That could take an hour.

From 5am-8am and 9pm-10pm you can swim for free, no lifeguard on duty. Other wise they charge $3 to get in which isn't bad if you plan to stay a long time. Or go on the free side of the springs where the doggies like to swim and play. The "water falls" can be fun to play in. I tend to get hungry or thirsty and have to walk across to the park side to get some refreshments.

I tend to use the time to lay out and get my tan on and read a book until I can't stand the heat any longer. Usually takes only 5-10minutes before I'm running for the water to jump in. I'm not much of a diver, but they have diving boards. When I was a kid I had a traumatic experience diving off the highest one. Lets just say it SEEMED really high up, and I was so light that I didn't have an easy time coming back to the surface. By the way, this is people watching heaven. You see the most unique random weirdos here. Also tends to be old Austin hippie central, sprinkled with hipsters in strange bathings suits. People with drum circles, and other strange instruments are sometimes brought in here for your listening/viewing pleasure. I wouldn't suggest bringing your younglings though... you never know how much skin you're going to see.

This is truly one of Austin's most beloved and treasured spots.

Barton Springs couldn't be in a better city - especially one known for it's evil hot summers!

This place is the BEST place to cool off! Be warned that the water is FREEZING, but within a few minutes, you will get used to it, especially since it is so fricking hot out!

Things to know: Since it is a natural pool, there will be algae and other forms of life floating around, not unlike what you may find in a lake (this creeps some people out). Apart from the freezing part, the "floor" of the pool is of course, natural rock, prone to algae growth which can be slippery and areas which may be a little ridged or sharp. Also keep in mind that the depth of the pool varies -  there are sometimes little areas where there may be slight variations in depth as a result of the natural rock. Also, no food is allowed in. Most of the area to lay/tan/read/hang out is sloping - which is great for sitting, but can be a tad challenging to lay.

Overall, this is a great, affordable place $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for Seniors and $2.00 for Juniors (ages 12 - 17) - there are also seasonal passes available.

One of my favorite places in Austin.

Where I grew up the swimming pool water was always refreshingly cool and yet here in TX it's pretty much luke warm in a regular pool which I'm not a fan of so when I found out about Barton Springs I couldn't wait to try it.  Now that was a few years ago and I guess I thought that if I didn't review it; the rest of you wouldn't come and crowd me.  Of course, that's silly.  The rest of you clearly can't keep a secret!

It's one of the best ways to relax on a hot day.  Spread out your towel or blanket under a shady tree, read a book and when you need to cool down jump into the icy spring fed water.  Float in the water (you just have to jump in; that inching in will make you change your mind), watch people jump off the diving board and enjoy yourself.  This is one of Austin's treasures.

I have no clue whether this place is commonly visited by the locals or is considered a tourist trap... I just know that I love it. After a few friends recommended it to me for my trip to Austin, I made sure we paid a visit. Lucky for us temps were nearing 100 so this beach girl was eager for some cooling down!

It's $3 to get in and once you do you're treated to a visual treat. The natural springs, the rolling green hill, the kids and families and sunbathers everywhere... it's like a dream!

The dream was unfortunately rudely interrupted the moment I dipped a foot in the water... ice cold! I was happy just dipping then running back to the warm grassy hill to recover. I don't know how people jump all the way in!

I was kind of sad that they didn't allow food or drinks in the pool area as I thought it would just be lovely to enjoy a sno cone from the snack bar outside as I watched people splash and play, but then again I really appreciated the pristine grounds so in the long run I suppose it's worth it. I do think they could probably invest in some bathroom doors, as the locker rooms are a bit bare.

All in all though, I have to say my visit to Barton Springs was one of the highlights of my trip to Austin. I wish we had one in LA!

I don't know that anything says "Austin" better than Barton Springs Pool.  Site of natural springs, you will witness all sorts of Austinites dipping in the very cold (perfect when the whether is hot) hybrid still-natural spring (there is moss, seaweed, and algae growing in the deep-end which we leave undisturbed while swimming, and more concreted on the shallow end, where kids can wade in fun and safety.  Further on, there is a separate area where you can bring (who else?) your furry friends :-)  Seeing dogs, kids, and adults splashing and smiling in something that most closely resembles a river is enough to make anyone's day.

    A real treasure in Austin.

PS  The long line for the diving board allows everyone to have a moment of celebrity as those nearby focus on your not-perfect form :-)

PPS  There are some women who decide that they are going to be topless here...something to be aware of, for better or worse.

My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday evening, around 6:30. It was pretty empty, maybe due to the rain and the ACL.

The water is cold, but being from California, it was definitely not as cold as the ocean. It was beautiful all over, with the trees, the colors of the water, and the nice weather that day. And to be honest, it was awesome none of the girls had great bodies (that day at least). Pools and beaches in California are terrifying to go to when you're not perfect-looking.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, except the lifeguards, who looked so bored. But it's not like they can do anything but stare.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because you can't take coolers or drinks or food into the area.

Maybe I would like this place better if I were younger, or if I grew up going here.  It was nice laying under the huge trees in the shade.  But, when I walked by the fence I could smell the smelly dogs and the really cold water was filled with nasty long grass.

To top it off, you have to sneak in a cooler.  Mind you, they let people smoke (illegal) pot here, but I can't even enjoy a (legal) water or (legal) beer?  Sorry, but I like to partake in a tasty beverage while lounging around the pool.

I prefer Hamilton Pool or my neighborhood pool.  I just didn't care for it.

A great perk about living in Austin! A spring fed natural pool that actually stays COLD in our scorching summers. It's a natural spring from the Edwards Aquifer, which has be surrounded by concrete sides. The place was beautiful, with nice trees and fish. I even got to see the rare Barton Springs Salamander in the wild! It's not the place for the germaphobes (Eww! that piece of algae just touched me!) but for normal people, it is beautiful. It's a true part of Austin culture and tradition now. Can be very crowded in the summer, which makes parking a nightmare. But the beauty and water make up for it.

Love this place! So much eye candy! The "hot dad" was my favorite. I'm pretty sure we're dating now and I'm those children's new step-parent. I didn't even mind that every time I slipped on the slippery creek bed I looked like a major fool, or that I kept thinking the water weed tickling my feet was the hair of dead people (damn Asian horror movies).

My one suggestion would be to build a solid wall against that fence/dam that separates the Pool from the free overflow ghetto side pool. It smelled like feet/pot/trash/dogs over there and the smell wafted over into the side I payed $3 to enjoy.

I love Barton Springs Pool.  There are a handful of businesses, parks, places in general that epitomize Austin, Barton Springs is definitely one of those places.  Regardless of the day this place is packed during the summer.  Last time I came was on a Monday afternoon and there were still hundreds of people lounging, swimming, and enjoying the day.  While there is a perfectly adequate pool in my aparttment complex, I frequently choose to shell out the $3 to come to Barton Springs.

The people watching is unbeatable...its a veritable cornucopia of freaks, geeks, spazzes, townies, college kids, rednecks, hoodrats, and everything in between.  While I'm too much of a sissy to hit up the diving board, you can fill the majority of the afternoon just watching people do belly flops into the pool.

Suggestions: Leave as much as you can in the car or at home, while most people are trustworthy I've heard of multiple instinces of belongings being taken, as lame as they are wear some water shoes...walking around on slimy rocks in bare feet is really gross, bring a blanket to sit on as most of the hills are all dirt due to the extreme drought, and lastly bring plenty of water...it gets hot!

Wow, a 10,000 year old swimming hole, right in the middle of town.  The limestone keeps the water clear, but the City closes the pool on Thursdays for cleaning.  You can still be entertained up on the bank if you like to see scuba guys for hire running silently back and forth in the shallow water.  We returned on another day and enjoyed the clunk of the diving board as perfectly grown men competed with each for the biggest splash from CanOpeners.

I forget how nice the cold water is at this place. If it's 100 degrees, you should just go here. Water is 69 degrees or so usually. It's cold. Just jump in and not tip toe in slowly...makes it worse. Once you're in, it feels amazing.

Anyhow, I forget if you park at baseball diamond you can save 3 bucks.

How refreshing! If you've never been, no matter what day you go on, the water is crisp and cold. I agree 100% with Nicole S. on her advice to just jump in. You'd be torturing yourself if you try sliding in. Barton Springs is a great place to lay out, take a dip in the natural spring pool, and most of all, people-watch.

The Spring has parking on both sides, in Zilker park and then one on the other side that seems to lead right up to it (although I've never had luck finding exactly how to get there!). I'm sure someone has mentioned in their review that yes, it is legal to be topless.

Gorgeous summer days it's advised to get there early. We went on a Saturday afternoon in June and it was jam-packed. Another word of advice, bring your own floats/tubes if you want to lounge and float in the pool because most spots are too deep to stand.

Endless people watching, a 68-degree pool, and plush grass (on the shaded side). For $3, this has to be the most refreshing, entertaining, inexpensive way to spend a sweltering Austin afternoon. I loved watching people dive off the board-- for every graceful dive there are eight more face plants and belly flops.

Wear water shoes (they make cute ones now)-- your ass, feet and toenails will thank you for it.

Simply the best value in Austin.  Where else can you spend $3 and have so much fun?  Throw in a few discretely topless maidens every now and then and man, this place has something for everyone.

Not to be missed:  the dog-hipster scene playing out in the creek past the North end of the pool.  Priceless.

The water has healing powers. I am certain. After the first shocking-take-my-breath-away feeling of the brisk natural spring, you feel this tingling all over your body - like everything is going to be okay. No, not that way you pervs. Seriously, once you keep your body moving around enough in the refreshingly cool waters, your body adjusts to the temperature and you realize just how awesome it is that you are swimming in a gigantic, natural pool. Not to sound like a total hippie, but you are one with mother nature (Ron Burgundy voice). No theme park element here. Just a natural pool for fellow citizens to all enjoy (topless or not). Children, Men, Women, and other interesting characters all enjoy Barton Springs harmoniously.

Recipe for a good day: go for a run on the hike and bike trail, then take a dip in the pool.  Whatever you do after that, you'll be relaxed.

Bonus: the pool is free before 8am!

Parking blows unless you're lucky. But that doesn't matter.
While dipping in on a hot, sunny afternoon is awesome, I like a sultry evening swim during the free hour - between 9-10.
Two reasons - one, there's something about the inky water and the night sky that is sublime, and also I'm cheap.
But by sun or by moon, and even when it's cool out -- Barton Springs refreshes the body and soul.

I love love love love louve this place.

Seriously though, nothing like it on the planet. If you haven't been, get in the car, put on your seatbelt and go already. But not on Thursdays because it's closed for cleaning.

This is probably the best thing about Austin.  You can swim/sunbathe topless and nobody bothers you about it.  You can swim year-round, even in the winter.  Just be aware that the water is always around 68 degrees so this translates into very, very chilly conditions.  Even in the heat of summer your heart may skip a few beats when getting in.  There are many that swear that Barton Springs waters are therapeutic.

My favorite thing to do at Barton Springs is bring a float and just lay like broccoli in the water.  They have a pretty cool diving board that you can do flips off into the deep end if you want.  The pool is quite large, so even if there are lots of people there you can still enjoy yourself.  Supposedly Robert Redford as a young boy learned to swim in Barton Springs.

Natural, spring fed water, grassy knolls, laid back conditions...it doesn't get better than this.

This is just my all-time favorite spot in Austin. The first time I went there, I felt like a kid in a candy store - my eyes popping out of my head, a big smile on my face. It is absolutely breath-taking.

On a hot summer day, jumping into a 69-degree natural pool doesn't get any better. It's so refreshing and shocking all at the same time. It's also about 1/4 mile long, so if you are training for any open-water event, this is a great place to do it. They have a diving board, and either side of the pool has some great grass area to relax and enjoy the scenery (that includes the natural, and eye-candy sort).

On the free side of the pool, the doggies abound, and the water is just as shocking. It's best to bring some water shoes, because the ground can be pretty slippery.

If you have not visited this site... you are really missing out. If I could marry an inanimate object, this place would be my husband.
