Growing up in East Tennessee, one gets used to community theater, one where I usually knew someone who was in the production (sometimes it was my sister), but Barter Theatre is different.   It is a professional theatre that dates back to the Depression.  The name comes from the fact that they would allow local farmers to barter for admission.  The productions that they have are some of the best I have seen in a very intimate theatre.  It is an amazing night of theatre in Southwest Virginia.

from the website "Today, Barter has a reputation as a theatre where many famous actors first performed before they went on to achieve fame and fortune. Barter's best known alumni includes: Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, Hume Cronyn, Ned Beatty, Gary Collins, David Birney, and Larry Linville."
