Just crushed (and I mean crushed) a sandwich from the Barnyard, and my life has never been better. The perfect, perfect hungover Super Bowl Monday food. Try the Eric -- spicy, salty, fantastic. I'm also a big fan of the Great American Hero -- mostly because I love America -- but also because of how after your first bite, you hear the sweet voices of angels. Bravo, Barnyard! Take all of my money!

Having grown up in a French household, with a Mother I would consider to be the best at home gourmet chef around, I developed a discerning pallet for delicious cheese and fresh ham. It's rare, then, that I find a shop that can deliver the aromas and tastes that bring me back to that kitchen. Barnyard delivers on making me nostalgic. It's ingredients are fresh and tasty, and it's bread has the perfect weight and taste. I may not be making it to the beach in France or Italy tomorrow, but at least I can get food that tastes as good as the shop around the corner in those small towns. Thank god for Barnyard.

Great deli selection and incredible cheeses. Local products produced to very high standards. They always let you try things at the counter and are interested in helping you pick the best ingredients for whatever you're making. I like the community aspect of this store very much.

Unfortunately they sometimes run out of stock so I recommend going earlier in the day or calling ahead if you're looking for something in particular. The sandwiches are awesome. A little pricey, but worth it.

This place is right around the corner and I walk by it everyday, but it has taken me until now to go in.  I had the mexicuban sandwich.  The pork on it was so tender and juicy and just melted in the mouth.  Together with the savory cheese, sweet ham, tangy pickles, and spicy jalapenos it was quite the combination.  The sandwich was awesome, and pretty good sized.  Not a huge amount of drink choices, but looked like some very unique ones (espresso soda).  The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 is the price.  While its not totally unreasonable its a little heavy for my personal wallet.  keep in mind the prices are a little higher because the quality of the products is top notch.  Will definitely be coming back here, just not everyday.

The Double Down grilled cheese sandwich was a delicious, low-key Saturday night meal...buttery toasted sour dough, caramelized onions, strong cheddar, and a little balsamic. The sandwich was just over $6, I think. They packed it in foil, which kept it nice and warm. There's a $10 credit card minimum which "forced" me also to buy their homemade apple crisp - $4 and enough for 2 large servings or 3 small. It was good, but not great...a little too tart for me and not enough crisp. However, while waiting on my sandwich, I tried samples at the counter of granola and hummus - both were delicious!

Even though the crisp wasn't my favorite, this shop is so cute and has a great selection of delicious homemade foods. The staff are also remarkably welcoming and friendly. I left with a mental shopping list of what I will return to try, including the empanadas, homemade pesto. cous cous with cranberries and herbs, ready to go crusty toasted bread, and organic low-calorie pasta sauce. Not to mention the fancy cheese! A delightful place to stop in.

They have an awesome cheese meat selection, with many of their products from local farms and cheesemongers.  Their domestic proscuitto is nitrate free and grass fed so you organic anti animal cruelty advocates can enjoy this delicious cured meat guilt free.

I also love their selection of spreads and teas and noticed that they carry some hearty thick cut bacon that I'm getting the next time I pay Barnyard a visit.

I especially love Big Tom's tomato juice (which I can't find anywhere else!!) which is really a damn good bloody mary without the vodka but who needs vodka when the mix is so bloody fabulous on it's own!  It's pretty spicy so I usually cut it with water cuz I can't handle my liquor- it's the bloody mary that keeps on giving...

Awesome find on Avenue C.  Oh and BTW- they make a meat and cheese plate that's not on the menu on request and if you're looking for some wine to go with that tasty platter, the owners also own a wine shop right around the corner.  She recommended a sparking red last weekend that was a total hit with the girls.  I heart.

Cute little coffee/cheese/meat shop.  The epanadas are good (we tried the chicken and veggie- both good!) and the iced coffee was decent.  Only 4 stools to sit on inside the shop and a bench/table outside.  The staff was super nice and the space was charming.  Would come back for a coffee/snack with friends if there was seating available.

I ordered the first hot sandwich on their menu - The Barnyard Classic. Just three basic ingredients: two eggs, thick cut bacon, and farmhouse cheddar to accent it all. Can't go wrong, right?

The sandwich took awfully long to make. It arrived only after I browsed through an entire New York Post. It looked flat and kind of pitiful, but I bit into it anyway. There was hardly any cheddar on my sandwich at all. I thought it might have blended so perfectly into my ingredients that I couldn't discern a cheesy taste, but I lifted up one half of the roll to inspect things and all I saw was two or three strands of a smear of cheese weakly stretched and then they broke off.

If there are three ingredients in my sandwich, I expect an abundance of all three ingredients. If cheese is a key ingredient, I expect to actually TASTE the cheese. It's sad, because this place has really fresh ingredients.

I'd be lying to you if I said this place was anything but pricey.  It's not cheap;  things will be cheaper elsewhere, like Grand Central Market, if cheese is how you aim to please.  For this is 'gourmet' in just about every way.  Particularly the wallet, even despite the Ave C address.

I had to get that out of the way, because I feel that every time I come here, I'm helping to pay for their probably not-so-cheap-anymore rent.  Now, that said, I do come here, and -- why do I come here?  I'll tell you.  The cheese selection is good, the staff exceedingly friendly, for they'll let you sample cheese and meats all day.  Second, the sandwiches, quiches, etc. and so on are all excellent, nothing is ever not 'pretty damn good'.  Every item is not a from a recipe yanked from an internet search, or copied from the guy next door, like so many New York establishments.  Everything is unique, creativity went into everything from their sandwiches to their decor.    Their sandwiches each have names ("The Eric", "The Sexier Beast", etc.) and come complete with high quality cheeses and meats, if that's your thing.  Did I mention the bread is fresh and great -- which is (many New Yorkers don't realize) a rare thing in Manhattan?  Even the croissants, on those weekends when they have them, are 'real'.   There's care in every ingredient, every choice they make here, and I don't say that lightly.

I always tell myself I should head to the supermarket instead, but I end up here, lured in despite the wallet-bashing.  That's how they got me.    My gluttony gets the best of me.

    Go here.

You walk in and the staff of 2 or 3 will smile and ask you what you're in the mood for this time. Not sure? Why not sample?

Some of us have a long, give-and-take tempering of our love with cheese. It's a matured passion and it will stand the years.

Others have just a crush, a punch-in-the-stomach-means-i-like-you kind of thing; maybe you don't know the names of the cheeses you like, or understand the many different types and qualities.

It's cool. You're going to love this place. And they'll love you right back.

They have olives like you've never had an olive.

To be perfectly diplomatic, they are small and they are relatively new. They are not a WalMart of treats, nor should they be. They're expanding their selections, and so you'll always have a reason to stop back in. They focus on quality, and it shows. Quantity is for those who lack judgment.

They make a few sandwiches every day. The best is "The Real American Hero" or something like that - it's like a BLT with avocado and some surprises. I'm not doing it justice but it's going to dazzle you.

Do a little onesie-twosie with the freshly baked deserts as they ring up your little packages of crackers and cheeses.

    This store is a blast!

I'm sure they get compared all the time to the so-called illegal cheese shop in the East Village.  Sure they are more expensive here but this kind of store actually cherishes what they sell.  Unimportant to some I'm sure, but this store is very welcoming and friendly and encourages you to try cheeses and meats before buying.  They have a nice spectrum of different cheese if you were having a dinner party.  Everything I've ever had here I've really enjoyed.

Their empanadas are quite good too.  It's a bit out of the way on Ave. C but if you're in the area or you know your cheese and want to try/buy something specific this is the place to go.

This store is why I love Avenue C. We were strolling down the avenue on a Friday night on our way to the so-so grocery store and we walked pasy barnyard, How could we not go in this adorable cheese store?

I picked up homemade pesto(so much flavor!), chocolate milk(and he told me to recycle my bottle in store and get a dollar back) and delicicous cheese of some brie type. We put it all together with some stuff at home and it was the perfect picnic on the LIRR out to Montauk for Memorial Weekend.

Also, please note, the gentleman who helped us with a slight southern accent was very engaging and helpful. He might possibly be the owner, not sure.

This store is one of the reasons I am proud to call Alphabet City my home.

    CHEESE PLEASE!

Pretty much the greatest sandwiches ever , made with amazing cheeses, fresh veggies, freshly made bread, and the meats... oh my!
    + the hibiscus tea rocks.

The staff's pretty friendly and will normally give you suggestions on what you might like though, they are a bit slow, it's pretty much worth the extra few minutes.

The homemade empanadas [chicken and veggies] are pretty damn good. I love the fact that they stock local and recyclable products. Seriously, from milk in glass bottles, to water in cardboard boxes. It's pretty damn good. If you're eating there, they also offer you a good old fashion NYC tap water.

What's not to love?  Unreal cheeses, meats, breads, olives, nuts.

The adoptable cheese basket where they put the small leftover cheese wedges for you to try without committing to larger hunks really allows you a small, affordable gastro-adventure.

Plus: South African spicy pickled red peppers, homemade empanadas (chicken and vegetable), local products like milk in recycled glass bottles, pasta, delicious bottled sauces.

AND!  If you're going on a road trip, picnic or are too hungover or hurried to make your own lunch, they have amazing premade sandwiches to grab on the go.

Welcome, welcome addition to the neighborhood!  A bit pricey but I can stand that for the convenience.

Four stars instead of five because the service is painfully slow.  It can can fifteen minutes to get out of there if there is one other customer.  Very frustrating every time.  Please speed it up so I can return more often!

Barnyard has only been here for two years. but it is already an East village staple.  The owner, Beatriz, has been working in the restaurant business for 20+ years and knows her food.  Great selection of cheese and meats, phenomenal sandwhiches (ask for them toasted with chipotle mayo), and a wide selection of olives and various other high quality foods.  Right around the corner is their equally awesome wine shop, Brix.

This is the best sandwich shop currently operating at lunch in the far East east village. I've been here 15years and this is an oasis of deliciousness. Stop in for freshly cut preserved meats or any of the DELICIOUS sandwiches (they'll custom anything). AND don't forget to check out their prepared foods, the empanadas were to die for and the mac cheese and lasagna are awesome for quick dinners; and the beet salad. YUM. very very provencal and if you don't eat EVERYTHING it's not expensive; great grab food to make anyday special!!! and they like French bulldogs!

I stopped in for duck rillette, which a friend had bought before and I was craving. Never having been there, the counter man was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. They didn't have rillette that day, but he gave me a generous taste of another pate and directed me toward a delicious mild Limberger, prosciutto and an olive oil. A woman, presumably an owner, suggested some accompaniments that were spot on. The counter man threw in a couple ounces of proscuitto scraps, that will be delicious on top of a soup crisped up. I was very happy with the quality and the customer service.
