I dipped my toe into the Barney's pool.  Rather I stuck my foot in hoping not to get too wet.  But instead of trying to ease into Barney's, I fell into the deep end.

What was supposed to be a simple purchase of a slim fitting shirt and a thin tie turned out to be a rather expensive but loved purchase.

I stopped over at Nordstrom's.  Sorry, you're not uber cool enough to carry the "shirts and ties."  Maybe if I was a little more "round in shape?  Ahhh...Nordstrom's I gave you a shot.

Headed out of Nordy's and into Bloomies.  Walked around like a lost puppy.  Finally, an Asian salesman asked me if I needed help, I answered, "Yes, I'm looking for a slim fitting shirt."  He pointed me to Z Zegna and Theory, and then hovered over me like Jerry Seinfeld waiting for Shoshanna to turn 18.  That bad.

He soon ditched me when he saw another man picking out shirts, what a vulture.  I almost gave up hope and then I remembered the other B.

I texted my friend Rebecca at Barney's and she agreed to meet me in the men's department to offer me some guidance.  Yay for Rebecca!  She introduced me to Amy who began pulling shirts, then ties and led me to the dressing room.

The Balenciaga shirt had me as soon as I put it on.  Yes, the price tag was equivalent to a car payment, couple it with the tie and you were looking at a hefty sum.  However, the shirt looked fantastic on my physique.  She handed me a black Dolce jacket and I had an idea of what I would look like stepping out in the town.

The cost of the shirt and tie was more than what friends of mine paid in rent.  I thought I was done. But, no.  I spied the Burberry rack.  The Burberry Prorsum gray military inspired jacket with the functional buttonholes, and detailed stitching around the collar fit like it was custom made.  I glanced in the mirror.  Did I look good?  Ummm, yes.  Did I need this?  No.

The lesson of the story boys and girls, go to Barney's when you can't find it anywhere else, you'll have beautiful and luxurious fabrics draping your body making you feel like a king or queen.  I'm heading back for the sale...

I really want to give Barney's all five stars.  But, this store doesn't really do it for me.  First of all, you come into the jewelry section right away and right away you are slammed with highly priced jewelry.  The staff is exceptionally nice and let you try on things even when it must be obvious to them that I am not going to buy anything.

The cosmetics are down a floor.  The selection is ok.  The accessories selection is narrow.  But they do have a wide assortment of fragrances.  The staff is on the pushy side in the cosmetics department.  But I find that to be the case in most department stores, for some reason.

The shoes are very good.  Interesting selection, but not as wide as in some other Barney's I've gone to over the years.

The third floor is essentially all black- almost all articles of clothing are black, black on black, and some other shade or variation of black. Very New York, I suppose, and we are a little bit like New York here, but common, please give me color.  The color is what you'll find in the COOP.  Here are the cutest clothes you will see and very reasonably priced.  I also love the jewelry here, very edgy and interesting.  I always get compliments on the jewelry from here.  It can be expensive, depending on what you chose, but you can also find a great statement piece for a few hundred dollars. The purses here are also cute and so are the accessories.

Don't bother with accessories in the basement.  Go right to the COOP to get them.

You pretty much know what you're getting into when you walk through the door at Barneys, so it's best to just settle in and have a little fun.   The clothes are gorgeous, the sales staff snooty - but that's what makes it fun.

We went up to the shoe department and I spied what I thought was a pair of old sunbaked, mud-encrusted cowboy boots displayed among the shiny new Choo's and Prada's.  Thinking someone was playing a prank, I walked over to the boots for a closer look.

Yep, they had mud on them and appeared to have been sitting out in the desert for several years but the soles looked new....and so did the price tag of $700.  I laughed out loud, and showed my friend. "Look! We should go outside and find some old bum shoes on the sidewalk and bring them in here to see if the fancy shiny people would want to try them on!"  "Let's do it!" screamed my friend in delight.  However, we noticed icy stares coming from the sales staff - they were obviously not amused, so we high-tailed it out of there.

I swear though, one day I'm bringing a pair of old worn out bum shoes I find on the sidewalk and placing them on the display counter.  I'll take a photo and post it.  Watch me.

Four dollar signs?  Yes, it IS expensive, SOMETIMES.

But you know, not even the super rich or even moderately well-heeled San Franciscans always want what Barney's has to offer.  This is either because they get bored shopping at the same place, or maybe Barney's doesn't carry what they're looking for, or they bought what they were looking for somewhere else, or it could be that maybe they do shop at Barney's but there is just no way they could even come close to purchasing more than Barney's incoming stream of inventory.  So what happens?  Big sales happen!  Don't just thank Barney's, thank the sporadic buying behaviors of those who can (or can't) afford their clothes!

This isn't news to anybody, but its so obvious--go when its cheap.  I got a pair of RAF's and pair of Acne's for under $100 with tax.  Easy.  Sometimes I go to Barney's try an expensive shirt on or two and snicker in a sing-song voice "I'll see you again when you're on saa-aaale..."

Everything considered, good service, nice store, and never any other shoppers to contend with.  (So the polar opposite of Forever 21)

Experiencing and thus being a fan of the Barneys in both Los Angeles and New York City, I was thrilled to experience our own Barneys in San Francisco come opening. The men's department has an excellent selection of both Coop and formal wear. Also, personal furnishings, shoes and accessories have an extensive collection. Sales associates and their excellent customer service are patiently awaiting to swipe your Barneys card.

Although it is not as big as the Barneys in LA or NYC, this is a mere reflection of San Francisco. Therefore I give Barneys New York in San Francisco four stars because yes, I am a huge fan. Yet it is not the Barneys in Los Angeles or New York City which deservingly earn five stars each.

Okay, this store does not compare to its main store in New York City - not by a long shot.

But, it is a pretty good size department store. It carries a lot of great designer labels. And yes - they all cost a pretty penny. My suggestion is to wait for their sales because they sometimes discount as much as 70 percent off. I have not been to the women's department, but the men's department is pretty cool - two levels, one for contemporary and another for more designer labels.

I believe they have a pretty good shoe collection - better than some of the other department stores in Union Square. Service is okay. I'm not saying they are the friendliest people in the world, but they will help you....sort of.

You know when I'm in a town that has a Barney's,  I'll go unless I've got better stuff to do:  Never been in NYC or LA, have been in Las Vegas and SF.  Like all the other high-end department stores in every city I've been to in the last six months:  they had great sales.

The service sucked so bad my wife walked out on a big dressing room of clothes she wanted to buy.  I don't begrudge Barney's bad service, though.  Where else are you going to pick up an APC shirt for 75% off, as I've done, more then once, at Barney's.

AMAZING FRAGRANCE SELECTION WITH KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF

I love the fragrance selection here at Barneys.  I get a headache smelling the synthetic stuff at the mall so I always shop here when I am in the mood for something different.  The staff here is so friendly and fun and they never make you feel pressured to buy.

Frederic Malle
My latest find is the niche fragrance line by Frederic Malle.  They have these cool "smelling capsules" where individual scents are released in the air and you can smell the fragrance in a unique three-dimensional way.  After taking a few samples home, I decided on the Bigarade Concentrée.  It opens with a blast of bitter orange and drys down to masculine cedar and cumin notes.

A great place to shop for fragrance if you don't want to smell like everyone else.

I'm not sure if I even have enough money to be reviewing Barney's, but lets face it.  This small little store (by department store standards) seems to have "edited" their offering down to the most expensive and least versatile of what you would expect in a flag ship store.

Now I know this isn't a flagship Barney's, but my point is we have a flagship Macy's and a flagship Nordstrom pretty close by, plus a whole union square of good shopping options and a Bloomingdale's.  And with limited places to wear a pair of paisley pants, I've just always found shopping elsewhere a better way to dress myself.  Your mileage may vary.

Plus, they lose points for having a sound track of "stuff white people like" non-threatening hip hop.

Something about playing Positive K while charging $30 for socks says "image obsessed honky."

P.S. anyone else a little discomforted by the New-Yorkification of downtown?

Definitely one of my favorite places to shop in the city. Whenever I'm feeling down, I like to go and browse the shoes section as they carry a generous selection of Lanvin and Pierre Hardy shoes for men.

One thing that annoys the living hell out of me about this Barney's is that every time I find something that I want to buy, they are out of the "small" size and so they have to have the clothing shipped to me from another branch. I'm all about instant gratification and if I see a jacket that makes me feel like I'm on board the Enterprise on Star Trek, I want to be a motherf-ing part of the Star f-ing Trek cast on that day, and not two days later! (+ $15 for overnighting) Cause who knows, I might want to buy that cool jacket from Helmut Lang that makes me look like I'm Darth Vader two days later! GAHHHHH!!!!

Slightly disappointed with my most recent experience at Barneys.  We were there for their Jeans Sale, and my husband found a pair he liked. However, it was slightly tattered (not on purpose) from being manhandled.

We asked if they may be able to find another pair from another store and ship it to us.  Their response was  ~ 1. it's on sale, you would expect it to not be perfect;  and 2. sure, we can have it shipped from another store for $15 shipping...

Ok, I know we were trying to buy a pair of sale jeans but that doesn't mean that you have to make us feel like we are second class citizens by telling us that sale things should be crappy and when it is always free shipping on http://barneys.com, you can get away with charging $15...

No thanks, we'll just order the brand new pair of also on sale jeans from http://barneys.com without the defects, the shipping cost, or the attitude.

Dog friendly business! Woo hoo! :)

I'm from NYC... so that's where my bar is.... however... this place is wonderful if you find Imad in Women's Coop on (4th flr, I think). He is WONDERFUL and helped me put my outfits together... he was pleasant and I really enjoyed his selections.

The customer service was fantastic too... I lost a tie that went around a beautiful blouse... (it was made of the same material... Diane Von F... so I wasn't going to get it somewhere else...) and I called Imad and he put it aside for me. Great taste.

The shoe salon is eh...yes they have Christian Louboutin... but there are more sizes at  Saks around the corner....

One star because they carry Alexander McQueen, two more stars because they carry Naked and Famous Jeans (Canadian constructed of Japanese fabric, raw, selvedge, and inexpensive!)

...and fifty more stars because Barney's not only stocks absurd, straight-off-the-runway, outrageously expensive, men's skin-tight leather leggings, but because the friendly sales associate suggested I TRY THEM ON, bringing me back to my glory days back when I was actually Kate Moss... for real.

Barneys New York is the best place to shop if you're willing to spend the money on quality clothing.  For the men, if you're going for a suit you have to visit Marco on the sixth floor.  He will make you look like a million dollars for less than a million.  I looked all over for a suit for my wedding and most suggested a black suit or a tuxedo.  If I wanted that I honestly wouldn't have asked!  Marco was the only one to have an innovative approach and was so professional.  He's also amazing at fitting you properly.

On the Fourth floor Michael is the one to see.  He was at Ted Baker before and since he's left it's obvious that the service has taken a turn down hill.

In general the sales staff at Barneys is surprisingly not snobby and so helpful.   In term of department stores it's the best buying experience around.

When I lived in NYC, my friends and I loved going to Barneys for makeup because that's all we could afford (except for the  huge yearly sale) and the service was great. I was expecting the same in the SF store, but I've had better service at Target.  Maybe it was an off day but still quite disappointing.

For the past several years, I worked essentially to pay off my Barney's card.  They do have clothes that are very fashionable and I have been enjoying not only my purchases but actually the process of purchasing my items here.  I especially recommend the COOP, of course.  Here you can get pretty reasonably priced items that are cute and pretty unique.  The quality may not be the best, but for the price and the interesting stuff you'll find here, I give it 3 stars.  The jeans section is huge and a little confusing, also a little on the expensive side, so I tend to stay away from it.  But my friend swears by them, so all the more power to her.  I've bought a pair here once, and it actually came apart at the seam.  May be my butt is too grande, but may be I shouldn't have been wearing them on the plane for 10 hours.  Who knows.  Overall, good cosmetics section and good perfume section with hard to find stuff, like Yosh perfume.

Whenever I'm in downtown SF, I go to Barney's just to randomly see if there's any good buys/sales.

Out of like 20 times I've been, there never really was, but it was still fun to go.

In fact, the only time I bought something here, it was for MSRP but only because the size of Nudies Slim Jim's I was looking for was really rare and they only had it here (30x32).

It's probably one of the classiest/nicest spots I've visited in terms of department stores. The places screams expensive.
It's kinda fun to just walk around and look how much things are. Especially when you look at the ugly things that definitely aren't worth $1,000.

5 stars if there were more good sales.

Check this place out either if you're ballin' out of control or just want to look at some interesting things.

I love the shoe selection.....I tried on the most fabulous Louboutin fringed boots here and felt like I was strutting down the runway.  I didn't get them because they were very expensive for a pair of boots that I don't think would get a lot of wear.   However, there were many shoes on sale that were fabulous and marked down to reasonable prices.

I like the clothes selection here as well.  It isn't the NY store, but it does the job.

"How may I insult you today?"

"I only wait on people wearing already wearing Prada."

"If I keep pretending you're not there you'll eventually disappear."

While these may not be statements I've actually overheard at Barneys, it is certainly the way the staff makes you feel.  Shopping should not be an intimidationthon.

Unfortunately, the only thing Barneys has imported intact from New York is the snooty, aloof service complete with catty banter.  The store is hideously ugly.  The main floor couldn't be any less inviting or poorly laid out.  In fact, all the floors are poorly laid out, replete with bizarre angles.

SF waited so long for a Barneys.  Can we ask for a do-over?

My dad considers himself just gay enough to love shopping but just straight enough to still like my mom's tatas.

I consider him about 90% gay.  You only need approximately 10% to 20% to stick your p in a va-gee anyway.

He does, however, recognize and acknowledge an attractive man when he sees one.

95% gay?

So...I know you're wondering what it's like to have a gay dad.  Well, I'm here to tell you that it's like 8 times better than having a gay best friend.

Know why?

My gay dad likes to shop with me.  And my gay dad doesn't like to hit Nordstrom's or Macy's.  My gay dad likes Barney's, Saks and Neiman's.

He knows when the sales start, he knows when it's last call, he will bargain with the salesman and just recently called me to let me know his "guy" at Barney's, Jimmy Two Shoes,  just informed him that the Gucci he recently purchased for 1.2k just went on sale AGAIN and to come in for a price adjustment.  He knows the difference between a Manolo pump, a Jimmy Choo Wedge and an LV sandal.   He bought me my first Prada.  But the best and most important part about having a gay dad, is having my gay dad.

He understands my addiction.  He agrees that shopping is indeed the best therapy and that it is never NOT fun.  Finally, he likes to buy me things that look pretty and are too expensive for this Cinderella to buy on her own.

For Father's day he didn't want to BBQ.  He didn't want to "watch a game".  He didn't want to drink some beer and put his hand in his pants.  He wanted to go shopping.  We started at Shreve and Co. to pick out a little something something for the Mrs. G.  Afterwords he looked at me with a gleam in his eye and said, "Barney's is having their sale".

I knew it was on like a super gay version of Donkey Kong.

Gay dad and I went to Barney's and he literally held me hostage on the 4th floor while I tried on 8 gazillion dresses and flounced around in each one for him.  He told me we would not leave until I found something I wanted.

I was stuck between a Kimono-Style Black number and a brightly colored and patterned silk spaghetti strap party dress.  It took an hour for me to decide.  Gay dad was the picture of patience as he thumbed through Diane Von Furstenburg maxi dresses and Marc Jacobs tunics.

Gay dad liked the silky, silky and finally sold me on it like only gay men know how.  "Your waist looks tiny, your legs look fierce.  Work it."

(ok - so he didn't say fierce or work it - but you get the point)

Three hundred and something later, we were done with the clothes and perusing shoes, when it occurred to me that although my dad isn't really gay, he is the best gay dad a girl could hope for.  Who needs to be taught baseball when they can be shown the light that is Barney's?

Now, if I could only make my mom a little less gay, she would probably like shopping as much as my gay dad, and that my friends, would be what I like to call the Pseudo Gay Parent Shopping Dream Team.

I'm an avid shopper and I've worked in the clothing business for some time, so I feel I can be an authority on luxury department stores.

Like many department stores in Union Square, Barney's New York caters more so to women, the uber-chic "Sex and the City" crowd, than it does to men who expect the same quality and service. Don't get me wrong, they offer some of Europe's finest labels for men: Brioni, Canali, Zegna, and several others, but the selection is so-so.

The mens' sportswear department is geared toward a particular demographic: young, affluent guys suffering from anorexia nervosa. I bought a pair of jeans from there, they fit nice, but the sales clerk was just that, "a clerk". He didn't try to "sell" me anything else nor did he mention that they offer free alterations (I took the jeans to my tailor to have him shorten them...he's a genius so I wasn't too butt hurt).

All in all, a man is better off going to Wilkes on Sutter, Barcelino on Post, or (my store!) Gene Hiller in Sausalito, or, to a lesser extent, the basement at Neiman Marcus (although they have THE BEST neckwear collection in the city, hands down) if he wants to get some grown up clothes. If he wants to look like a hip 20-something with an eating disorder, Barney's is certainly his spot (the sportswear department that is).

I would elaborate on the ladies' departments more, but who cares...they have enough stores.

I really like the Barney's Green Label - the options are limited but I have purchased numerous pieces (both in SF and NY) and they have held up very well in the wash and are super soft.  To be honest, the prices are high enough that I do try to get up there during sales but I love the fact that Barney's is making a conscious effort to offer stylish and comfortable green clothing.

Out of the big downtown department stores, Barneys' fragrance section is starting to be my go to place for candles.  While the selection at Bloomingdale's is boring (they carry some of the same candles as Whole Foods, for Christsakes) and the candles molder in the dust and sun near the front entry of Neiman Marcus, Barneys has a collection of candles to match every mood:

-DL & Co candles for when you feel like an opulent goth.
-The Apothia line for that seductive LA bachelor feel.
-The Comme De Garcons line for when you are in an artsy mood (The CDG 8 88 candle, in particular, is an item of almost garish beauty, it's a shame that it's bling bling gold).

With this plethora of choices, it's very difficult for me visit the adjacent Kiehl's counter without leaving the store with a candle with a burn rate of $1.00-$1.50/hour.

As Josh P. so duly noted, I do my Yelp reviews in spurts.  That, and my cousin just moved to the city for art school and I was showing him around downtown.  Since he's doing fashion design, I figured that Barney's would be a great place to take him so he could admire some finely made clothes from some great designers (i.e., Givenchy, JP Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, etc.).

Overall, it's definitely a great place for art students (especially Fashion Design students) to gather some major inspiration.  Seriously, it's a wonderful place to get the creative juices flowing.  However, don't look at the prices.  You'll just feel depressed that one year's worth of tuition or two months rent can buy a dress.

Even though I have a decent full time job, I could not bring myself to purchase the 'Made in Heaven' jeans I tried on.  Yet, I needed the experience.  $265 for jeans!  St. Gabriel better have done some that seam constuction himself for that price!  I had to experience it though.  Believe it or not, the jeans were pretty damn amazing and the staff was nice to help.  They weren't condescending or rude at all.  Very hipster actually but nice.  Again, go to Barney's and come up with your next great idea here or see what looks good together.  Trust me, there's some beautiful stuff to be seen.

People who are familiar with Barneys shop here.  If you're looking for something edgy, and basically live/die for fashion, this is the place to look.

The staff in all the departments at the SF location are great.  No attitude, friendly and easy to work with.  The only problem is, this location isn't quite as good at others.  Even the Barney's New York Co-op at the Americana in Glendale has a better selection.

I'm convinced SF gets all the fashion reject items in their stores.

Yes kids, here's another questionnaire, this one designed to assist you in determining whether you should plan a shopping trip to the new Barney's New York store.  As usual, this questionnaire is not at all judgmental.

1. What is the most annoying thing to you about traveling?
     a.  The rude flight attendants
     b.  The cramped seats
     c.  When the Gulfstream is in for maintenance and you have to take the crappy Lear.

2.  You learn that your rich, childless Uncle has died.  What is the first thing you do?
     a.  Immediately call your father to console him on the loss of his brother
     b.  Immediately call your aunt to console her on the loss of her husband
     c.  Immediately put a deposit on a new Porsche

3.  How many real fur coats do you own?
     a.  None
     b.  One, but I inherited it
     c.  Umm, I don't know, but anyway what's your problem, asshole?  Everyone knows it's cold in San Francisco.

4.  You are informed by the Hostess that there is a 45 minute wait for the next table.  Do you:
     a.  Wait patiently
     b.  Go elsewhere
     c.  Loudly ask the Hostess if she knows just who the hell you are.

5.  What is your annual income?
     a.  Under $75,000
     b.  Under $200,000
     c.  I don't have income, silly.  I have Wealth.

6.  When you go grocery shopping, do you usually buy 1%, 2% or whole milk?
     a.  2%
     b.  Whole
     c.  I need to check with the servants.

If you answered c.  4 or more times, then Barney's New York might be just the place for you!

I'm going thru a wardrobe identity crisis at the moment. I don't know how to dress myself. I pick the same kind of clothes over and over and look the same almost everyday. I want a change...I might even try using color or accessorizing if things go right.

Barney's has the cure for what ails me. I go to the fourth floor and politely request the first salesperson I see to dress me in whatever they recommend. Clothes that fit me beautifully show-up in the dressing room and I get to try them all on. There is a French guy here who can do no wrong. He's fantastic (used to be at Saks and moved to Barney's w/in the last year I believe).

Selection is similiar to NYC but w/o the snooty attitude which I appreciate.

So every time I go into Barney's I have a fantasy. I dream that I will be looking at shoes and find the perfect pair by Christian Leboutin. I'll put them on, linger in front of the mirror, only to say to myself with a sigh "C'mon Kelsey, you can't spend $800 on a pair of shoes." Suddenly, a handsome, or at least very generous man (of any age) walks over and says, "Those shoes look gorgeous on you. Let me buy them for you." I gasp and smile, and tell him that's far too kind, but he insists. He buys me the shoes with no strings attached, and I get his contact info so I can send a nice thank you present.

Guess what. This never happens. Instead I generally leave feeling bad about not being able to buy anything. I like Barney's very much for what's inside, but I give it 3 stars for making me cry...maybe that's an exaggeration but you get the idea.

Barney's is a fabulous department store.  I love the San Francisco store for what it is.  I say that because i still feel it is a bit small for such a store.  I wish they had more room so they could have put in one of their restaurants, like a Greengrass.  I havent been to one to really say how the food/service is at them, but i would have appreciated putting one so close in SF for me to find out.

As for the service of the department store, i wouldnt describe it as snooty, per se.  That is, if you walk in there, you're not going to get dirty looks from the staff... You might just not be helped right away.  Nevertheless, the place still gets excellent reviews from me because i enjoy the store regardless.

For men looking for suits, i reccommend Barney's as an excellent location with its variety and service.  I also highly reccommend you seek out a man by the name of Bill Bragman.  He works in men's suiting on the 6th floor is such a nice, well mannered, pleasant man who has the best pair of eye-glasses ever!  I walked in there wearing nothing but a shirt, shorts, and sneakers (it was a casual day) and he treated me very well (compared to the others who kinda just past me off).  So purchase your goods from him.  He deserves it.

yes, Yes, YEs and YES!

Barney's New York is as good as it gets! If you are serious about fashion, good quality clothes, good fits and comfortable styles, this is the place to check out.

The men's section is wonderfully done. The racks are not overstocked with clothes and the shopping experience is relaxed, laid back and almost like being in a museum seeing works of art that you can buy.

Everything is simple, easy to get to, laid out perfectly and simplicity is the approach Barney's New York takes in selling their products and I'm a fan.

The staff are very friendly, no attitude, approachable and down to earth.

Now if only I can convince everyone to get my Baryey's Gift Cards for gifts.

I would just like to thank Barneys for having gem-encrusted exotic aquatic creatures jewelry (finally, God).  I had been dreaming about a diamond squid ring for years, and now for something in the thousands of dollar range I can finally have it.  They even have an octopus necklace and also a goddamn crab bracelet: http://www.barneys.com... .  I'll be like "WHY YES, THIS IS A MOTHERFUCKIN' CRAB BRACELET" (who still wears silver?  sheesh!).  Anyway, Barneys is awesome and if it were a dude I'd totally date it.

Updated - 12/10/2008

Update on 12/9/08- Mannie was able to find my shoes and was kind enough to promptly call me back. His helpfulness has mitigated Carlo's rude nature. I am giving it the additional star but like Katherine A said, this does not compare to the NY branches.

I guess when I think of Barney's, I think of customer service that should be akin to my local Nordy's. Once again Nordy beats the competitors in my heart :)
