Barnegat Lighthouse and State Park is a wonderfully relaxing place to walk around; watch the fisherman, boats and wave runners...with a beautiful breeze.  It is free to walk through the park and on the paths and costs $1 to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

You can read about the history throughout the park & at the Visitor's Center, which is quite interesting.  There are also picnic tables for use along the waterfront.

The drive to the lighthouse, whether by car or bicycle, is really enjoyable!

I appreciated visiting the site of many of my childhood adventures at Long Beach Island. The winding steps up to the lantern and the long glass roof overlooking the bay and the sea were almost as intense as the 10 minutes walks up as a child. I was greeted by the cries of children that reminded me of earlier days, with the dads and moms watching over caring for their young and then there's that sister or brother who pushes the buttons and tries to get up first. I appreciated reading about the types of dune vegetation on the stroll from the parking lot over the windswept sand and wooden planks. I appreciated the gesture of the state to maintain this park and house, offering it for free public use on the weekends this fall. For the bathrooms, I appreciated the pit stop. For the people fishing aimlessly into the dark blue, I appreciated the company as the beakers hit the seawall.

It's great to see the parts of the island that are maintained without extraneous commerce in mind. The tackiness is left at the door. Looking back at the island I saw all the development as the howl of the wind hit my red ears. My cheeks asked me to go back down, I was just in a collared shirt over a t-shirt with jeans, but I, thinking about an old story of a boy who tolerates the cold, wanted to make two rounds. The island made more sense from a bird's eye view this November day; it looked like a spread with garlic on a pesto flatbread. The grayish yellow peeked between the dark green pine trees. Or maybe it was that there was a battle between gray and green, like the changing of the seasons and the attitudes of the people to stay. I couldn't tell which was going to win in the long run.

217 stairs to the top is worth it for the views and to take in a piece of local history.  It costs $1 to enter and climb. The state park, jetties, and paths surrounding it are free of charge as is the parking.

After you climb visit the new Visitors Center.  Air conditioned, lots of history of the ligthhouse and surrounding areas, you can get for $1 a certificate saying you climbed the lighthouse.

Open 10-4 daily during the summer.

I wouldn't say it's a must-see, but nice view up top if you're in the area... very narrow stairs and lots of them though!

Put into commission in 1835 - the original lighthouse fell into the ocean, but the light atop it had already been moved. The structure it stands on today was built in 1859 and is the 2nd tallest lighthouse in the US.

Barnegat Lighthouse is now a State Park and you can go to the top and see great views of the Atlantic ocean - bay side and beach side. Perfect for some nice vacation photos.

The park area is nice to walk around, and you can go onto the beach a little further away.

Barnegat Lighthouse can serve as a destination anytime of the year.  I have been there several times over the years while spending a week on LBI.  Hearing about the lighthouse's history will make you think of a time before GPS and sonar, when a simple light guided ships safely through the night.  Whether you go for a visit on a beautiful summer's day or during the off season, "Old Barney" is worth a drive up Long Beach Blvd.  When there head over to 19th & Bayview Ave. and watch the commercial fishing fleet bring in the day's catch.  http://www.longbeachis...
