my neighbor works here...she told me that when they can't sell the dogs the employees foster them until they can find homes for them...as far as i could gather these dogs need homes just like anyone else...
my husband and i got our puppy from here...we battled about whether or not this was the best option and went for it anyway...
i think that puppy mills are wrong but i've also learned that a lot of people that say they got their dog from a breeder have gotten puppy mill dogs (especially those that have sent for dogs out of state)...that doesn't make it right but these dogs need loving homes, owners that will help socialize them and take care of them so don't knock 'em....
i still believe there are a lot of dogs that need homes so our next dog will be a rescue but we don't plan on treating him/her any different....
as far as buying toys and other dog accessories from here i say order online...my neighbor has said they mark up the prices a lot so even she orders online.
Gosh... reading the reviews for this store makes me sick. So many people are using this as a podium to spout off their political fru-fru about how puppy mills are bad, how these dogs are all crazy and diseased, and how if you even buy a toy at this store, you're supporting inhumane monsters and Michael Vicks all the same. Whatever.
I spent a lot of time visiting local shelters and rescues, and never found a dog I wanted. One day, just stopping by for fun to "look at puppies and tap on plexiglass" I found the most awesome dog in the world! Or should I say... he found me. My little boy is healthy as can be (no strange allergies or stomach problems), is possibly the most well behaved and sweet dog in the world (obedient, doesn't bark, doesn't bite, just lots of licking). He's now 8 months old, and he was only 2.5 months old when I got him... about half a year now, and I've had no problems that could have come from his breeding.
When I bought this dog, I didn't know anything about puppy mills. In fact, I'm not even sure that this dog came from one... we have all the information about who and where he came from. I haven't bothered contacting the breeder, but seriously, who's going to be that psycho when they actually get an awesome dog!
Anyway, I'm tired of you people. I'm tired of you people who give me that disapproving "you disgust me, I'm better than you" look when you find out that I didn't rescue my dog. Maybe you thought you were some sort of hero for paying $3000 to get your dog from an AKC certified, non-puppy mill breeder. Or maybe you adopted your dog from a shelter (and I WILL give you props for that, because that's an honorable thing to do). But seriously, leave me the F alone. I love my pup, Junior!
Desptite getting the most awesome puppy in the world here, I'm only giving this place 3 stars for a couple of reasons. First of all, everything that they sell is OVERPRICED. Including most of the dogs... but you can bargain if you really want one. However, don't bother buying any dog STUFF here. You'll find better prices at Centinela Feed, or even Petco.
The thing that really bothered me was seeing some of the bigger dogs there. I've seen a 4 month old Golden Retreiver in one of the kennels... barely enough room to turn around. And the worst was a 5 month old husky! She was going crazy, jumping and clawing at the glass. I don't have a problem with the little dogs that have plenty of space, but gosh, get those big guys outta there!
Response to the poster who commented on my review:
There is NO PROOF they come from Puppy Mills, these folks are driving out to the middle of nowhere on this YOUTUBE video and nowhere do the puppy mill folks say yes, BarkWorks is one of our clients--this isn't proof?? Look, TWO WRONGS don't make a right. My dog was from BarkWorks and I contacted the breeder - she is NOT a puppy mill.
Also, instead of going after stores, its their FREEDOM to run a store and SELL whatever and HOWEVER they like. My advice, go AFTER the PUPPY Mills that have poor breeding facilities and take it to THE GOVERNMENT or STATE so that we can VOTE how MILLS should be run I.e. you can't put more than one dog in a crate, they have to be taken out for walks etc. They had a proposition similar to that in CA regarding chickens and cattle I believe (that's the way to go!).
AGAIN, for those animal activists GO TO THE STATE - that's how you make a difference and leave the stores alone, are you going to run over to Macy's and tell them to stop importing goods made from China because you want only American made? You're not happy with how little their paid per hour in China and the long hours they work and poor labor conditions? Seriously, pick your battles THE RIGHT WAY!
Honestly, nothing will EVER and I mean E-V-E-R change until you go to the government/state and we can vote on how mills are run and controlled. Going to the stores is an endless battle you'll never win so instead of complaining about it find a solution.
Off my soapbox...

First of all, I'm a huge dog lover. I never imagined I'd buy a dog at a pet store for the reasons… Read more »
Im so glad others have written about this horrible place.
I was there on Sunday and I was so upset by what i saw
There were at least 2 puppies to a box that did not have any air or place to move around in.
the dogs were all lethargic and were rolling around in their own dirt.
I have been on the phone for the last 2 days trying to report them to Animal Control. Im determined to get the city to take those animals at once.
If I could give ZERO stars, I would.
How a big mall in a big city could still sell puppies in 2008 is mind boggling. There are a TON of puppies in this place, and the way the store is laid out gives the puppies zero privacy. Everytime I walk by this store, there are so many people in there milling about gawking at the puppies and tapping on the glass. And speaking of the glass -- the puppy enclosures are literally like glass aquariums.
Maybe the store appears more bright and cheery for consumers, but seeing 2 or 3 puppies crammed into little glass aquariums stacked one on top of the other with little kids tapping on the glass makes me sort of depressed.
They had a huge Christmas blowout sale --75% off. I was tempted to buy some things for my dog and thought better. I can't offer a store like this any of my business.
BTW -- I'm not putting down people who buy purebred puppies. It's different strokes for different folks. What I COMPLETELY and UTTERLY disagree with is the selling of puppies in malls and pet stores. It's disgusting and all about turning a profit. Good, reputable breeders are incredible and care about their dogs immensely. Most even make you sign a contract to agree to return the dog if it doesnt work out. Do pet stores allow you to do that?
It's a nice, bright, and clean store. They carry a good assortment of toys, leashes, collars, clothes, grooming products, etc. Anything your dog needs on a day to day basis. Puppies are kept in glass kennels you see at the mall that looked clean enough. They have at least one in every display case, sometimes a couple to a few in each. There is some basic information about each dog listed on the window.
There's this attitude to hate stores like this. I don't think I have to go into detail why, nor condemn anyone who does or does not agree. If you are looking for a dog and aren't open to considering dogs at the shelters or research local AKC sponsored breeders, then this store might be up your alley. They do a better job in presenting a cheery and fun atmosphere than the other local pet stores that sell puppies. They were very busy on the past Friday evening we were at the mall and kids seem to get a big kick out of the store. Several were with their parents contemplating purchasing. The dogs they had were very cute and were all smaller breeds.
You won't get any personal attention here unless you are motivated. It's not a very personal shopping experience and the advice you do get would only rival that from the lesser employees at Petco. It's probably hard to get anyone who is very knowledgeable about pets to work here, so most/all of the staff seemed to be just using it as a summer job without much knowledge about the puppies or products.
Y'all beat me to it! I just saw this store yesterday and it made me sick to my stomach.
Cute little puppies were crammed in little kennels/cubicles where idiotic "customers" tapped on the glass and took pictures of them.
This store needs to be shut down.
I'm glad to see that other compassionate Yelpers have spoken out about this pet store and the conditions frequently found in other pet stores. Americans can't stand the idea of unwanted dogs being put to sleep, but we've still got pet stores opening up across the country where people can buy dogs rather than adopt homeless ones. According to an article from the LA Times, in LA County alone, thousands of dogs and cats are euthanized annually (2,616 in 2008). Aside from the infuriating statistics, these stores frequently keep animals in glass cages with little to no space to move or play. On top of that they're located in a busy mall teeming with young children who tap their glass cages, shout, and harass these young, frightened animals. I've been to this pet store and while the animals might look cute to most people, they just look like prisoners to me, crawling over each other to get space to sit with no toys to play with.
If you're an animal lover, please do not shop at this store or any other pet store. Choose pet stores that do not sell live animals, for the animal's sake. In general, animals you adopt from shelters undergo background checks and have medical histories, making them a better bet for a healthy pet for your family. There's nothing better than knowing you saved a life rather than bought another product of the cruel puppy mill industry.
Do the research: learn more about pet stores and puppy mills. Please do not shop at this store.
So, I will admit I have never stepped foot in this store, but let me tell you a story.
My friend called me and let me know that her younger sister and her irresponsible boyfriend had bought a pomeranian puppy and were unable to care for him (2 weeks after purchase). She offered to give me the puppy because they had no where to place him and needed to get rid of him ASAP. So I picked up this poor orphan and he's a very sweet dog, but it is obvious that he is a result of poor breeding.
First of all, I have been raising Pomeranians for over 10 years now. I raise them as pets, not for profit and it just hurts me to see dogs that are neglected and sad. My new little boy-puppy, he had never seen grass before and did not know how to walk on a leash although he was 6 months old. Was not potty-trained, and did not look socialized. In addition, no thought was given to breeding as his fur had a splash of black on his tale (he's sable) and he has a vestigial thumb on his left paw. I must say, I am shocked. For a puppy which cost so much money, it looks like he came from a puppy mill.
Breeding for profit is in bad taste, shows a greedy and empty heart, and although I am not religious, I am sure(hope) that one day you will be repaid in kind.
you could work at the DMV...OR you could work at a puppy store.
choose wisely. i almost bought a welsh corgi here for 900!, before my bf screamed reality into my sensitive ears. it's too much, (you could get it for 500 from a breeder), and it is pretty awful to support puppy mills.
i saw a BIG golden retriever puppy in their usual stalls (which is probably comfy for....well..no dog...!) it could barely move around, and there was feces around.
the helpers were VERY nice, and gave me as much time as i needed with puppy of choice. they knew the corgi's needed daily exercise amount, diet, and temper, etc etc. they were VERY helpful.
i can't rate a puppy store under three stars. dogs are always happy. they could be fucked up, starving, but if they're with their person, all is right in the world. i was heartbroken when i couldn't walk away with my welsh corgi. so please, if you have any dispensable income, please buy me a corgi. female. chubby. : ) i'll be in your debt forever.
This place has Puppy Mill written all over it.
Not as bad as the Beverly Connection pet store but up there.
They currently have a miniature pinscher on "sale" for $499.00 because she would not sell within a month. 1/2 off.
I questioned the store personnel about why they don't get their puppies from local breeders and they said they only buy from Kansas, North Dakota and oh of all place, Pennsylvania (Read: AMISH puppy mills ) breeders with their name and addresses listed on the window. I looked and they were all PO Boxes in the above states.
Buy from a local breeder or better yet, adopt.
PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT PUPPY MILL BREEDERS. If there is a demand by the pet stores (i.e. you purchase a cute puppy), they will continue to buy from the puppy mill breeders to stock their cages full. The newbies are in the back of the store and the ones they need to get rid of fast are in the front window and the front of the store.
Feel bad for the parents of these dogs who are bred over and over in metal crates amongst hundreds of other dogs who cannot roam free and who are then in turn killed if they get sick or cannot breed anymore.
Whomever marks this as a funny review is obviously someone who works at this place. Shame on you.
If you want sickly, mistreated, and questionable puppies with underlying behavior problems, check out this place. I work right nearby and it always makes me sad and angry to hear parents say they are taking the kids over to "the puppy store". Or even worse is when I see someone walking around the mall with a new puppy and they tell me it came from this place. I managed to talk at least one woman out of looking for a puppy for her son at any pet store. She had no idea about the horrors of puppy mills and the quality of animals that come from those places. I told her to either adopt or find a reputable breeder (at the Pet Expo!). This place is horrible. You walk in and see so many puppies crammed into very small tanks and the place is always very crowded with nasty brats knocking on the plexiglass. If you know anything about dogs and breed standards, you can easily see that these are terrible examples of whatever breed they claim to be. I really hate seeing the older puppies who are way too big for their tanks with big "On Sale!" signs- guess you gotta mark down the merchandise that isn't selling right? The dog merchandise they are selling in the store is also pretty crappy, just marked up to throw in with a puppy sale. I can't wait for someone to protest this place and get it shut down.
I was in here today and it was kind of fucked up. They had an Italian greyhound who was shaking, looked like out of fear but could also be a health problem I suppose. Most of the puppies are small enough that it's humane to keep them in such a small enclosure, but both times I've gone here they've had one or two dogs that were just obviously too big for their cage. Very sad.
i agree with the majority of the folks on this particular store.
the store is nice and all, makes u wanna kinda/sorta spend cash on the pup but NAHHHH. no immediate attn, cute stuff and what not although the dogs look terrified, not a fan and definitely NOT future customer, especially for a dog, EVER!
The best place in LA to get your puppy fix. So many puppies! I saw this lady who got the cutest dog from there. I wouldn't buy a pup from a store, but I definitely go play.
do not buy from this store or any store that sells puppies. all stores sell puppies from factory farmed mass produced breeding factories. integrity, care and kindness are not part of this formula. these dogs are all most likely sick with psychological and genetic disorders. please do not shop here. thread wisely, an educated consumer does not buy a family pet from a store.
