Love, Love it, Love
Sometimes I do feel like they r a lil pricey, but maybe it's just because I'm broke..SMILE...the staff is very helpful..whenever I can't make up my mind they always pull something out I wasn't even looking at and says that looks like you and indeed it does! I love being able to go on Myrtle and do some real shopping. I always see something I like and want right now...thats why at times it's best for me to walk on the other side of the street!
The quality of the products there don't match the exorbitant prices. I sometimes get some sale items- gloves for instance- but for me this is most definitely just a browsing store. I've paid the same amount of money for real quality items somewhere else.
The quality of the items suggests something from Chinatown. This whole store seems to just be Chinatown consolidated, with a steep finder's fee, of course.
Barking Brown is two blocks away from my apartment, and I only just had a chance to browse last weekend. So how psyched was I to see that they stock one of my favorite independent NY jewelry ladies, Erica Weiner? That fact alone will keep me coming back! Everyone in the shop was super friendly and I was wowed by the selection of pretty reasonably priced bags and really cute winter accessories.
i like this store alot, though i usually spend more time browing, some of the stuff is a bit out of my price range but i still think $60 for a dress is a good price, i'm just too broke. needless to say, if i won the lottery i would shop here for everything.
This place opened a few months ago and is still a hidden secret. The store is filled with purses, hats, scarves, shirts... perfect for holiday shopping. My mother and I went in looking for nothing in particular and came out with great gifts for others and ourselves.
I bought this beautiful patten leather navy blue purse. But it was hard to choose between that one and at least 3 others. The wonderful ladies who run the store helped me narrow my selection, at least down to two.
There were all different types of hats; fedoras, beanies, paperboy... all very stylish. I did not see one duplicate. Which is something i love! I hate going into a store and worrying about whether or not someone else might buy the same thing (and God forbid, wear it on the same day as me). Thankfully, this store is full of unique items.
The cutest things were animal beanies for kids, yet big enough for an adult (with a small head). They had the cutest hat with elephant ears. Loved it!
Please check this place out. Its fabulous.
COMPLETELY REWRITTEN AS OF 5/25/08:
OK, so I finally bit the bullet and shopped at Barking Brown.
I like the idea of an independently owned accessories-oriented boutique right in the neighborhood. Yes, it's true, everything is mega-trendy. Straw trilbies, aviator sunglasses, canvas totebags with Engrish or nonsensical french phrases on them. However, the prices are extremely reasonable. I'm willing to spend $20 on cute summery accessories that will update my somewhat boring wardrobe, whereas the same sort of thing will seem way too expensive at $50 somewhere else.
I get to feel good about supporting a local small business which is neither evil nor poseurish (I'm talkin' to you, Urban...), and which is also affordable. I also get a great new pair of sunglasses (or bag, or mittens, or hat, or whatever). You really can't beat that.
I admit that I like Barking Brown but it's not so much because of the store itself it's because the rest of Myrtle ave (for the most part) is full of stores you'd find in a stripmall. You know those stores, you pass them wondering how they stay open.
But BB is cool with me because it's a dog friendly space and lets me bring in my "bully breed".They even hold him for me when I go to try stuff on.
They carry Havaianas and tshirts and a lot of bags and hats and sunglasses and jewelry. They have women''s clothes but they're on the hipsterwaif hobochic side and not cheap.Which hasn't stopped me from buying them. That's how much we need some women's clothing boutiques around here.
Cuuuute store. Nice stuff. I've gone in there about 20 times to browse and never buy anything because their prices are a bit over the top. But the owners are use to it and know that I'm never going to buy anything whenever I step through the door ::smile:: However, I DO understand that they're supporting local independent artists/designers who have to make a living too, so the prices make sense, can't argue with that...
Very over-priced and highly unoriginal couture. The fashion is bland hipster (think 16 year old goes to the mall to get cool) and the prices are outrageous. Also the clerks have a tendency to hover over you the entire time you're in this small space, telling you about the products and asking if you need anything no matter how many times you say you just want to look around.
