This is a store that puts their time and money where their mouth is with regard to rescue dogs. Bark n' Bitches keeps between 4 and 6 adoptable dogs at a time housed in their beautiful store ready for adoption. The owner picks dogs up from one of 3 shelters, grooms them, houses them and cares for and feeds them until someone adopts each and every one.
I'd like you to meet an adorable terrier whose name I cannot remember. A dog like this could change my mind about small dogs. She was so interactive and friendly. And Hannah. Below is Sundance. I was completely enamored of Sundance. And Zooey, who would not stand still long enough to snap a good pic of her beautiful face.
My two amazingly smart, fun and loving god children had fun with one of the free-roaming hounds.
We were just strolling past Bark n' Bitches with time to kill, when I decided to shop for a dog bed for Jackson.
The three of us spent time with all the dogs and Lauren, the cool chick running the store and trouble shooting. While we were there, a good Samaritan from a gas station called. One of their recently adopted out dogs had been found with a Bark n' Bitches dog tag on its collar running the streets near a local gas station. When she closed up shop in 10 minutes, her first priority was to run down and get the dog at the gas station and bring it back to the store.
In addition to spending their time and money doing much needed & never ending dog rescue work here in Los Angeles, this indie shop carries some of the coolest merchandise I have ever seen at actually very fair prices. (Compared to the closest indie shop to me in Silverlake, whose prices are akin to highway robbery.) Here are some shots of merchandise that caught my eye.
Artsy elevated feeding station.
V cool highly elevated feeding station...Daisy would have loved this. It looks like it was made out of an old (v old) soda fountain. I have never seen anything cooler. This is industrial art.
Requisite fluffy toys.
Carrying cases for the small dog minded.
The selection of collars is gob stopping. I bought Jackson a lovely black leather collar studded with steel stars. I am not sure he is cool enough for it, but we are going to give it a whirl. If you look closely, some of them look like Western tooled leather belts, some with Swarofski crystals, soft leather with delicate metal studding like a Calleen Cordero sandal, and so on.
Above is another item I caved on, antlers found on the ground during antler shedding season. Then boiled and sanded and ready for weeks worth of chewing.
I took home the big bed on top for my special canine, the black one with white bones. The top is made from very short sheared sheep skin. As soon as I set it on the floor, Jackie lay down on it and wouldn't move. He has been suffering a poorly filled and sized Target bed recently, and I think he was communicating something along the lines of, "It's about damn time you got me a decent bed, you ingrates."
Change. Save a life. Adopt.
I love their selection of harnesses. When I didn't see a certain Puppia harness in stock, the store custom-ordered one for my Chihuahua. Since my dogs have sensitive stomachs, I like that this store carries high-grade chew hides and premium dog treats. AND OF COURSE, being owner of chihuahuas, I love to dress the babies up in dog fashions. The shirts were super cute. especially the "Vote Obama '08" shirts.
This place has great collection of collars for dogs of all sizes. They carry a unique leather, studded collars that look awesome on large breed dogs, especially kissy-bulls.
Shannon the owner is an awesome lady. She simply ADORES dogs of all breeds and sizes (and volunteers her time and store space to local dog rescues). It's nice to know that someone is in this business for the love of dogs... a passion that I share, too!!! I always stop by this store when I'm in the Fairfax District, West Hollywood or Melrose Ave area.
I love this little store. Very friendly owner who truly LOVES dogs. If you cant find they will try to find it and order it for you!
Bark n Bitches is the real deal. An upscale pet boutique that doesn't make you feel like you just walked into some twilight metroyuppiepaloozawholefoodsrules zone. They have the requisite $75 designer collars, but seriously some of this stuff is really, really cool. Your pooch should be so lucky to have his own dog t-shirt that says "Michael Vick is a Dick" on it. ("What happens at the dog park stays at the dog park" is another popular item).
The owner and staff are incredibly nice and by incredibly nice I mean they don't get pissed when your dog takes a big whizz on a $150 rolling pet carrier (sorry!). They also turn the store over to Dogs Without Borders to host an adoption fair every Saturday from 1 to 4 and offer a 20 percent discount to anyone that adopts a dog.
These are good people and they run a really good shop.
Suddenly there's an explosion of doggie boutiques in this town. This one's been open a year but I only just eyeballed it when my beloved hairdresser moved just down the street. So i swanned on over after my highlights to see what they had for Sir Pooch.
The place is big, massive selection, heavy on the sparkly, decorative, girly-dog side- but really nice stuff. They carry the retro-chic Jax & Bones beds and actually stock swatches so you can order custom. The owner is a total sweetie and all the dogs in the store get lots of love. If it's near your hood, this is a great stop for your canine accessorizing needs.
The owners are great as is the selection of really unique and functional dog supplies. I adopted my puppy from here and couldn't be happier. I went there during an adoption fair and the puppy I was interested in was not available, but Shannon stayed in touch and helped me find the perfect dog for me. They were also really helpful preparing me with all the things I would need to get set up with taking caring of my lil guy.
Cuuuuute place! The first time we stopped in here my roommate actually ended up buying a Halloween costume for her kitty, so even though this place is 99 percent for the dogs, you'll find a few cat things as well.
They have an amaaaazing selection of collars, leashes, and tags, and - when I was there around Halloween time - costumes! They definitely cater more to smaller purse-dogs, but you're likely to find something for even a giant beast of a dog!
drove by everyday and been always curious, then finally we made a stop one day on the way home with our beloved four-legged angel coco.
friendly owner, funky pet stuff for both cats and dogs - especially great selection of collars!
she actually closed the door for us so that coco can sniff around and shop comfortably.
very pleasant experience, and we'll definitely go back for coco's another collar shopping.
My dog trainer friend swoons over this place, so we had to stop in and see what all the fuss was about. The selection is pretty vast for a dog boutique, and they have some great leashes (we splurged on one with a cool skull design). I love stopping in here when we go to Canter's for lunch nearby, and the woman who runs it is always very friendly. Out of all of the dog stores and boutiques we've tried in Los Angeles, this is probably my favorite just because the atmosphere is both warm and chill, and my dog always finds something she can sink her teeth into.
I really like the owner and Ecco really likes the treats. It's a definite go. I look forward to spending more time here since I just moved into the neighborhood recently. I like how committed the owner is to adoption/rescue. I will eventually get there for their sat events. Moving takes the life out of you! Ecco will be coming back, since he's a big fan of the baked goods!! Kudos!
I am so sick of doggie "boutiques" catering to only small dogs! It's not just this place, but all of them. I have medium to large size dogs and they want to wear sweaters in the winter too. :-( Please, share the cute and cool with the big guys.
