What a beautiful place!! The gorgeous bar & wood beams are impressive!
Had a fantastic lunch here on Tuesday. I had the wonderful Kobe Beef flank steak dip with mashed potatoes & gravy. The best thing I've eaten in a long time!
My friend had the soup of the day Potato Leek & the caesar salad with anchovies, tomatoes & bacon. Both looked perfect!
Had to try the Bond martini with blue cheese stuffed olives & it was awesome!!
Friendly & fast service. Only minor complaint was that the server brought my friends cup of soup before her salad not with the salad so she didn't want to eat in front of me without anything. Servers should ask if they want the soup or salad first or together.
Would go again in a heartbeat! They have an extensive menu with tons of great sounding food. -

"Please Seat Yourself" was the sign that greeted us when we walked in. Packed. Bustling. Friday night at 6,:30.
After looking for an open table for about 30 seconds, a nice male waiter pointed our party of 3 to an available table in the back.
We were served EXCELLENT drinks and even better food. We enjoyed the awesome atmosphere and the Huckleberry Infusion Martinis. YUMMMM!!
Can't wait for my next visit to Boise for some Bardenays!! -

Boise just got a whole lot better!
The drinks are so tasty, creative and reasonably priced. They make their own hard liquor and infused vodkas. yummmmm... I love sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartenders who were very nice. I even got to sample a quite a few before making a selection.
Food was good, but I dont think it was anything to write home about, as I cannot remember at this point (and it isnt because I had a few to many). This place is great for unwinding after a long day at work! -

This was easily one of the best overall experiences we had in Boise.
First brilliant idea - we sat and ate at the bar. The rest of the restaurant was a bit crowded and eating kind of took a backseat to drinking during most of our time in Boise anyways. The bartender was awesome. Neither of us is much of a liquor person (I know..I know...at a distillery) so we stuck with the beers that they had on tap. The bartender talked all about the different varieties, let us sample a bunch of others, and was just incredibly knowledgeable about all of Bardenay's libations.
Second brilliant idea - meatloaf platter and sweet potato fries. Delicious. When I get back to Boise I'm making it a point to have this meal again.
Third brilliant idea - staying for a second (and a half) round of drinks. The bartender took the time to write down a bunch of places we should go to while we're in town and talked to us about the history of the area.
Can't wait to go back and try some of their cocktails. -

Great service and atmosphere! Nice beer selection and a few good decent scotches as well. My only complaint is that I feel they are just slightly over priced, but maybe I'm cheap. I recommend this place.

Bardenay is a great restaurant for a business trip. They have a good drink selection (especially bourbon, my favorite) tasty food, and a great ambiance in a family environment. I had the bacon wrapped tenderloin in a demi glaze and it was very well prepared. They definitely put the "tender" in tenderloin. Friendly, but not overbearing service, a good bet for your next business trip to Boise.

The drinks here are simply the best in the city. I am a big fan of cocktails, so sometimes I have a hard time finding a place that both myself and my beer-enthusiast friends can go to that we both have our wants met.
Bardenay has both of us covered and at a reasonable price. The Happy Hour is also probably one of Boise's worst-kept, yet still under used secrets out there. The fact that a friend and I can snag two very nice cocktails and two delicious appetizers for under $30 is nothing short of fantastic.
Bar service is very top-level as well. On my last visit, the bartender was kind enough to let my friend sample a couple of beers before having to commit to purchasing one. That showed me the bartender wanted to make certain our drinks were ones we truly enjoyed. -

Wow...
Bardenay accomodated our party of 10 adults 5 children. Without hesitation they got their crew to put several tables together & within minutes our drink orders were taken.
Our server didn't even flinch when I asked if I could sample two of their IPAs (without charge I might add). Before taking our food order he offered to split the check however we wanted! What server would even consider to "offer" that? This guy did...he already had me at the IPA samplers.
While waiting for the food to arrive, I always imagined that if I ever owned a bar/grill, I'd definitely like to model "my" bar after Bardenay's. In no way is it original as it borrows its style from many shot-gun bars I've seen in my bar hopping travels. It is certainly done with class.
They have a great selection of draught beers & next to that resides a refrigerated glass window wine bottle dispensary with several great selections. Above center a large mirror is cantered so that you can "see" pretty much everything from wherever you are seated. I also noted the showcase of which sat the distiller. It's magnificent! Like a piece of art on display. Barneday has a daily/weekly liquor special in which they personally have distilled. This day it was gin. I'd have liked to have tried it, but tonight, I'm into the IPAs. I like the use of the used brick which covers most of the interior walls & the high beam ceilings. Not that the high beam ceilings are original either...just that it looked so clean up there & not packed with an inch of dust as I've seen many other joints, pubs & restaurants with this common problem...
Three wait staff, including our server arrived serving up our party's dishes. One by one you can smell the wonderful aroma mixing in the air. The service was outstanding; our whole party had their plates in front of them in about 2 minutes. Timing was impeccable.
My dish!
the Beef Fillet @ $19.00. Bacon wrapped with a demi-glace, seasonal veggies & garlic mash.
one word: PHENOMENAL
This meat was "medium" ordered & cooked to perfection...my only complaint is that the bacon was burned to a crisp & parts of it inedible. The perfection in the tenderloin made up for it & the mashed spuds tasty!
To my left, my wife was twisting her fork around her Fettuccine with tomato sauce & shrimp & offered me a sample. OH SO GOOD!
To my right, mom-in-law was ever so silent for the longest time only to find that she was silently humming while diggin' into her Salmon Fillet...which she also offered a bite. DELISH!
As I looked across the table, the family looked as if it was Thanksgiving dinner & hadn't eaten in weeks. Even the distant "non stop yapping" cousin was silent while she devoured whichever dish she'd ordered.
Our utmost fave spot during our visit to Boise.
AWESOME place...wish we had something similar to this in the Los Angeles area. Thanks so much for an excellent eating/drinking experience. Did I mention that the men's room is spot clean?

Gin swillers rejoice! This place is a must try. Their gin has been a favorite of mine for awhile and is smooth as silk. I had mine as a martini and they offer an intriguing selection of garnishes to go with including Basque olives, cream cheese stuffed olives and jalepeno soaked garlic cloves. I had mine with the cream cheese stuffed-delish! Oh and it was $5.75. Definitely a good value on drinks here. The beer list is pretty average but there is a rotating tap and the prices on beer are reasonable too. But why are you drinking beer here? Did you not get the distillery part in the title? Put the beer down and try the vodka or gin!
Would have loved to have sat outside on their expansive patio but it was pouring out. I can tell it would be a popular place when it is nice out though. That would have been my preference as it was pretty loud inside. Also looks like a popular spot for groups, birthdays, bachelorette parties, etc.
The food was good, satisfying. My boyfriend had the meat loaf sandwich after reading the recommendations which was pretty tasty. I had the sweet potato and black bean stuffed chimichanga after spying it at another table. Also good. My favorite by far though were the Clams Portugese-steamed Manila clams with chorizo. Yum!!!! My sister's family was with us and while they didn't have an actual kids' menu, our server was super cool and informed us they could modify anything on the regular menu-half orders, or do grilled cheese, butter noodles, etc. Food prices were just as affordable as the drink prices and the portions were generous.
Let's hope next time I'm in town it's not raining so I can sip my gin on the patio!Comment from Kyle M. of Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery 6/24/2011

Fun place, yummy food! We stopped in for lunch on Sunday with a party of 7 -- sat outside on the nice patio.
Ordered a bunch of appetizers and a few entrees....mamilla clams with basque chorizo in the broth were great, cheese board was very good, calamari nicely done, Mediterranean platter of hummus/etc was very good.
Among the entrees, the satays were the standouts -- chicken was tender unlike I've often found; pork was tasty, but the *salmon satay* was incredible.
Since they distill their own gin, vodka and rum I tried the Bardenay bloody Mary --- very nice!
Overall, very enjoyable place well worth a visit. -

Even though I didn't have the best of luck with my entree I'm giving this place 4 stars for a killer ambiance in downtown Boise. This place was happening Thursday night after we trekked into BOI from LAX, IAH and SJC, we were tired and a bit hungry and definitely parched.
We wanted to grab something before heading up to McCall so we ventured into Bardenay. This place was alive and they don't mess around on their drinks. Especially their vodka in gin which they distill...
I got the Bardenay Bond... which was gin & vodka shaken and served up. I love a fat stiffy but this was almost too much for me... or maybe it was because I've had so many bad experiences with gin that we don't mix well anymore? Regardless, my friend finished it for me.
I did something that I have never done and ordered that lame entree that one would if you don't have much of a palate or in some cases culture and got the Fettucini Alfredo... only putting it out there like that because their menu is extensive and impressive. They have a whole section devoted to Satay Sticks which I found so sexy.
I didn't have it in me, I wanted something plain, simple and comforting. I'd been craving Alfredo Sauce all week so I just went with it. Stoked I did as it was simple yet pretty tasty. The only problem was that it was cold. Not warm but borderline cold. I had it taken back ( I rarely have things taken back) and it came out within minutes and it was still cool. Not warm but cool. Strange. I should have said put it in the microwave for 60 seconds, that would have done the trick. I pretty much ate it all anyway, I was hungry and it was solid.
Calamari was ordered as well as a deep fried Chimichanga among others. My friends were enjoying the selection of beers as I worked hard on my Bond. If I'm ever in this neck of the woods again, I'd definitely hit them up.Comment from Kyle M. of Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery 3/29/2011

Excellent locally distilled spirits! I had a Gin and tonic that was probably the best I have ever had. The service was excellent and very friendly. The food was good. However, I had the pork chops and while it was tasty, it was not a KC chop and was mostly fat and bone. Overall a must visit if you are in Boise!

We went to Bardenay in BoDo on a Friday for a mom's night out, and I was very impressed by how accommodating the staff was. They made sure we had adequate seating, were very attentive and even took a group picture for us. They also split our checks without an issue. I was very impressed with their professionalism.
The drink menu is extensive. I had a few apple martinis made with natural fruit liquor (no pucker!) They were strong, but went down smoothly. So much better than your average appletini.
The shrimp appetizer was a little meager for the price, but tasted great. I also shared someone's calamari. Not the best I've had (I prefer strips to rings) but not at all rubbery.
I'd say the food is above average, but the drinks and service are outstanding. If you're just looking to enjoy a cocktail with your friends, Bardenay is 5 stars. -

Not Bad! As a recent transplant to Boise, I like these types of places where they have a huge selection, full bar, and vibrant scene. It's in a cool area where there's street-side dining, and easy parking.
I got the Salmon Charbroiled Sandwich, and WOW was it a mammoth. It had to be at least 10-12 ounces of salmon on a toasted bun. I don't like BBQ sauce, but they used an orange flavored twist on it, and for ten bux you got me hooked!
There was waaaay too much on the menu, but that's never a bad thing. I will be back for sure, and have about 8 items I'm looking forward to trying.
And the service was outstanding. They don't bug you every 5 minutes but are there when you need them, exactly the way a restaurant should be. -

We visited this place as the first dinner spot on our weekend in Idaho. The food was very good (had the trout) and the drinks were good too.
The best part was our waitress who was super friendly and accommodating to our large party. Also, she was amazingly helpful in recommending other bars to visit in town. She had them all pegged perfectly! -
Review from Laurel E.

Oh man, where do I start. How about with the service?
The first thing you need to know is that there are two menus, one for food, with a limited selection of cocktails, and a longer booze-only menu. Our waiter never brought us the longer menu, and when I eventually tracked one down and tried to order a cocktail off it, our waiter had no idea what that cocktail was. He recommended the ginger cocktail without asking us what we liked, which would have been fine except that no one in my group liked sweet drinks. The ginger cocktail tastes like tang with vanilla. Seriously. For a group of people who just want a dry cocktail. He didn't know what was on the cheese plate, and never found out. "I think it's the dill...?" We enjoyed imagining a conceptual cheese plate -- large pile of dill, tiny fork for eating it, shot of salted milk -- but not as much as we would have enjoyed knowing what was on the cheese plate.
We didn't get silverware until after our food arrived. We never got ketchup. He brought us the check without asking if we wanted anything else. Our second round of cocktails took at least 10 minutes to get there. He wasn't rude, but it was genuinely bad service.
And the food. There's only one thing you have to do right with fries: make them to order so you can serve them hot. Naturally, the fries were cold and a little stale. The cocktails were much, much too sweet, except for the July mystery cocktail, which tasted very slightly like soap. (To be fair, St. Germain always tastes a little like soap.) The salad was profoundly mediocre: slightly aged lettuce, cucumber slices that had been sitting out for several hours, a sour tomato. The kobe beef sandwich was pretty good, and the actual pieces of fried cod were ok, though the 'chips' were the afore-mentioned cold stale fries.
The worst, though, were the clams. We got most of the way through a bowl of clams only to discover that they were slightly gritty because there was AN ENTIRE CLAM FULL OF MUD at the bottom. And here we return to the service: waiter dude took the clams back, showed them to the manager, apologized, and took them off the bill. Which is fine, and definitely meets the minimum requirements. But I've worked high-end service jobs and here's the thing: if you care a lot about service, when something like that happens you try to make it up to the customer. You send out a complimentary order of something (sweet potato fries! doesn't have to involve expensive ingredients) or take a cocktail or two off the bill or offer a free dessert on the house.
Nope.
We went to Fanci Freez afterward and had soft serve and tater tots. I wish we'd had the whole meal there. -

Extremely reasonable prices, especially considering the amount of food. This place is special in it's own right. The service was quick and efficient and the food was definitely yummy. I appreciated the fact they were playing the women's world cup too. And, oh yeah...a distillery on-site? Awesome.

Came here for a business dinner with a bunch of coworkers to celebrate our first day on the project. The food was alright... we started off with appetizers - bruschetta, pita & hummus, and calamari. All of them were your standard (and average) fare... I think the bruschetta was a bit soggy, though. And they used really small pieces of calamari.
I was craving chorizo, so I grabbed the Grilled Chorizo Sandwich with cole slaw and a cup of Red Bean and Chorizo soup. The soup wasn't the greatest - there were only two pieces of chorizo in the whole thing! But I dug the sandwich - really good grilled chorizo and carmelized onions. Mmm...
It sounds like we might be doing more team outings here in the future. I'd like to try out their house-distilled liquors and see what else they have to offer. I'll give it a three for now as most of it just seemed average. -

Primarily a bar and distillery (so "house gin" is really a thing here.) By Boise standards I guess drinks are a touch spensive ($6-$8) but my, they are worth it, being both imaginative and well-mixed. On a cold winter's day, their hut buttered rum is the drink I imagine a St. Bernard would bring to revive you as you, the sole survivor of a brutal alpine avalanche, lie stricken with snow blindness on an icy mountainside.
The sandwiches are elaborate and delightfully well-priced. The chorizo sandwich with grilled peppers and whole milk mozzarella is a personal favorite. Bardenay gives Boise a good name. -

Holy crap, I saw this joint on TV.
And now I am in Boise at this joint. Its a weird world we live in.
They distill all their own booze.
Its your typical brewery look with the wood and brick but instead of beer barrels there is a still.
Service was awesome. Food tasted great.. I really liked the seared tuna appetizer. MMM
Bonus! They have a real hand-pulled cask beer on tap too.
delicious.
Boise, you are not just for potatoes anymore... unless its stilled down into vodka. -

Try the Barry Whites, they are quite tasty drinks. I only came here late night for some cocktails and bruschetta, but I really enjoyed it. We had good service and easily found a table, which was pretty nice for a Friday night. They distill their own gin which is a nice touch. I actually just saw their liquor in a local liquor store, which surprised me a bit. Overall its a pretty chill fun place to go and chat with friends over a cocktail.

Review from Lana G.
We cannot judge the food. This is a college hangout and it was much too noisy to hear oneself think, much less to dine and converse with a wife or a date. We went elsewhere.
The college crowd keeps the core of this small city lively, but beware: parking downtown can be similar to parking in a much larger city: impossible on the street and expensive in the high-rise parking structures. We were lucky to find a space on the street near Bardenay; after we left, despite a prolonged search, we were unable to find a space on the street near our second-choice restaurant, so we went back to a restaurant, the Kopper Kitchen, near our motel and the airport. -

"What?" :OIAUWUSALDF "You want to sit outside?" Ahh much better. Couldn't hear a word you were saying in there. Nice day out here. The shade cloth is a nice touch to keep it cool when the sun finally comes out. Good place to people watch and see your friend from the City who conducts history tours on the Basque Block.
I haven't eaten here in a while so I went for the Ahi tuna salad. Seared on the outside and raw on the inside. Kind of bland actually. How does that happen? Did they suck the flavor out with the superficial flashiness of their style? The salad part of the meal was great. Tons of dressing. Good Arnold Palmers too. Must be real lemonade.
Don't go here for lunch if you don't have 1.5 hours. It gets very busy. -

Bardenay is a very casual, adult-oriented restaurant that is one of the few places in Boise that has great drinks (full bar) AND good food.. Ya, the atmosphere isn't anything special, the patio is small and usually packed and the inside is more pub-style than restaurant, but the food is unique and usually delicious and the service is above average. I enjoy the mojitos and they have an amazing pear spinach salad with shrimp. Also, If you are a fan of brunch or sandwiches, this is a good place to go.

Its very causal, you walk in and you can sit anywhre. there is a lot of seating and the mood of the place is very fun. We decided to sit at the bar. almost as soon as we sat down the bar tender brought us a menu.
This place has some of the best bar food. which is something that is very important for a long night of drinking. They have there wine on tap which is something we have never seen before.
Also an important detail is that they have Coors Light on tap which is something that will keep us coming back again and again. -

Review from Colin G.
Regarding the star rating, it's tough because there were two things that were terribly wrong with our meals at our visit to Bardenay, but everything else was just fine.
Maybe not "fine." The service was lacking. We had a seat on the nice patio during the end of the lunch hour, and everything moved particularly slowly. The patio was almost full, but the inside was nearly empty, so there wasn't much of an excuse there.
And the niceties of the patio and this restaurant's immaculate interior are really its saving grace. Being on Grove Street in the Basque Block with a nice building though, I don't think, warrants a positive review in itself. The food is really what makes an experience excel over a location, regardless of the latter being a plus or not.
The two things that went wrong with this meal were food-related. First, I got a chorizo sandwich with fries. The chorizo was not as good as what I had eaten at Bar Gernika the night before, but was certainly still pretty good and the bread was really nice. The fries, however, were off. When I asked, the server freely admitted that they were the frozen/Sysco variety. WTF? This is Idaho! Does any respectable restaurant really need to subject their customers to frozen french fries? And not only frozen fries, Sysco fries. I mean, I'm not looking for the Bittercreek Ale House standard of excellent housemade fries, I'm just looking for something that I can't buy in a big bag at the supermarket for $2. And the only reason I know what these fries are is because, for years in college, I ate them at Burger King until I got disgusted with them and can't eat them anymore. No, seriously, these are the same fries as you find at Burger King. There's just no reason for that.
Okay, so maybe I shouldn't automatically expect fresh fries at an Idaho restaurant. I mean, it's the Gem State and not the Fresh-Cut Potato State. But the other bad part of the meal was inexcusable. My companion got an "ahi" tuna salad. Quote marks are necessary there because it was nothing like the ahi tuna you may be used to. This was, essentially, the tuna that comes out of the bag. It tasted and looked no different. This is, admittedly, one step above the Bumblebee variety, coated with brine, mayonnaise and a "lord knows" variety of chemicals, but it still sucked and rendered the salad virtually inedible because of the tuna's outright stench.
So we left with finishing only about 1/2 of our meals. I would not return here, nor would I recommend it to anyone else. If you want Basque, go to Bar Gernika or the Basque Market next door. -

Bardenay is one of my go-to restaurants in Boise, a city filled with good eats. The service is always good, the cosmos are always perfectly mixed, and the outdoor dining is lovely from April until September. The food is consistently good and very reasonably priced. It's packed on Friday and Saturday, but the atmosphere is always upbeat.
Some of my favorites include the chicken satay, the bruschetta, the salmon fillet and the Mediterranean pita. The lemonade, like the booze, is house made and is guaranteed to make you pucker. -
