Review from Jose I. D.
Manhattan, NY
For this price range, it's hard to ask for more. The ambiance very is relaxed and intimate in this dim-lit brazilian nook. If found it to be the perfect place to have a conversation, while the noise level is high enough that others won't be listening to your conversation, it was never loud enough to the point where you have to make an effort to hear the other person. This is an ideal to take somebody on a casual date.
While the locale is small and constantly full, I have never had to wait more than 10 to 15 minutes for a table which has been very convenient.
When it comes to the food, this place continues to surprise me. I have had the pleasure of tasting 5 of the main courses on the menu and I have liked each and every one of them, considerably. When you take in to account that they are from the 12 to 17 dollars range, you are pleasantly surprised at what you are getting.
The service is fast and attentive and the food comes out quick enough so that you are not complaining about your ravenous hunger, but not too fast where you feel you are being rushed to eat and leave so that other people can sit.
One thing that was a bit strange and another that has always been annoying to me, though. The strange one is the soup in the bathroom... Instead of having liquid or foam soap, they have this strange bar that looks like a small melon or zucchini (depends on how much it's been worn down) and is drilled to the wall. Kind of feels like your giving the soup a hand-job just to clean your hands. The annoying one is that this place is cash only which is always a pain considering that in this day and age less and less people carry cash with them.
All-in-all, this place is a great little spot and I recommend it to anybody that want to have a nice relaxed night with good food and brings good company. I highly recommend the Rice Bolognese Al Forno. -

I usually write much more detailed and elaborate reviews but I'm going to keep this one short and sweet, just like BarBossa and the time I spent in it. Went here with two lovely girlfriends prior to a concert/open bar @ the John Varvatos store on Bowery. My two girlfriends were waiting for me at the tiny little bar area and we were seated immediately. One of the first things that I noticed was how small the resto is; we're talking miniature (I think my apartment's kitchen and living room combo is bigger than the entire bar and front room of the place). However, I was comfortable in my little seat and there is another big picnic-type table in the back past the kitchens, near the bathrooms (which, FYI, don't have a mirror).
Food was good. I had the tomato and basil bruschetta and I got the pao de queijo basket to share with the girls. Both were very tasty. My friends each got a dessert (the Guinness cake and the Romeo, Julieta and the Lover), each of which I took a bite at their insistence. The Guinness cake basically tasted like a regular chocolate cake, albeit rich, and the RJL, which looked like three little blobs on a plate (to put it bluntly), was pretty good - especially when a touch of all three was combined on a fork.
Service was great. Our waitress was absolutely lovely - very sweet and attentive. Drinks did take a bit but that wasn't her fault at all; said drinks were very strong, so much so that I wouldn't describe as tasty (don't get me wrong, everyone loves a strong pour but a mojito shouldn't taste like rum poured in a cup with just a hint of mint).
Definitely would go again if I'm in the area but I don't think I'd make a special trip just to go there! -
Review from Lizz M.
A friend and I took a trip to BarBossa after looking up Brazilian fare in New York. We came in on an early Friday night and it was pretty empty. The atmosphere is perfect for an intimate night, nice and warm.
We decided to get a few Caipirinhas and appetizers. I went with the strawberry caipririnha and it was delicious. A nice tall glass for $10 isn't too shabby considering it was strong and did I mention delicious?
The pao de queijo was nice and fluffy, and the calabreza sausage was flavorful, especially as it was paired nicely with sweet sauteed onions.
Simple and delicious. Service was also great. I'd definitely come back and have dinner here. -
Review from Lauren L.
This place is definitely a date place. I liked the passion fruit mojito but disliked the strawberry mojito. We split two dishes. The good: shrimp and avocado it was fresh and had a good flavor. The bad: the short rib while having a good flavor was very fatty. Sometimes it comes down to the luck of the draw with what you order.

Very disappointed by our experience in this bar. Very few people inside and yet we had to wait 30 minutes for our caipirinha (all the ice cubes had already melted in the glass...) and about 40 minutes for a feijoada and a bacalhau appetizer. Feijoada wasn't good. The meat was as dry as a desert sand dune and the rice was super watery. The bacalhau was mega salted! Impossible to finish our dishes. The only positive thing I could think about is the price. $13 for a feijoada and $8 for the bacalhau is pretty cheap but you will get what you pay for...

Very authentic brazilian food, tasty stuff. the bathrooms have an endearing soccer theme with the great Pele smiling down at you. the soap bar took me a while to understand. not to be picky, the glassware could use updating. great staff and good happy hour drinks.

New York, NY
Highly average. The roasted spicy chicken wings is a tiny tiny serving and the wine selection was pretty uninteresting. My merguez sandwich had too much salty goat cheese and barely had any meat in it. My friend ordered the pulled chicken club sandwich and really liked it, but he was the only person who was satisfied with his order. Other friends ordered the steak and polenta, the feijoada and the queso fresco sandwich, they were all pretty mediocre.
The space is pretty tiny but if you're a large enough group they have a largish private table at the back. -

Smooth operators!!
Manically arranging a surprise birthday impromptu gathering in 48 hours, I think I've changed my party size and dinner time 4 times.. The team @ Bar Bossa did not show a slight exasperation or stress!!
We were seated at the private dining table in the back.. perfect for this kind of event when all the guests arrive intermittently. Come the time of the surprise, as individual guest arrived sporatically, each were greeted for a beverage upon seating.. endless request from our carb loving friend for bread was met repeatedly. Our server Simone and owner Tariq were effortless dream of service to experience..
Loved our night with amazing Shrimp Avocado curry and Bacalao and Pao de Queiso straight from Bahia.. along with amazing Malbec..ask for the balsamic reduction to dip with the scrumptious coarsely chopped tomato and basil Bruschetta.
Vibe is bubbly and chill at the same time.
We had brought a Billy's birthday cake, so no Coconut Tapioca dessert but I can't wait for the next time! Perhaps to try out their delicious cocktails too.. -

NY
Came here with friends on a weekday night after work... their happy hour is great, but I opted to try the Rose Sangria which was delicious! Heard good things about the happy hour specials as well.
The service was good, the food was on point... I got the chicken mango coconut curry--- yum! The goat cheese salad with chorizo, I couldn't stop eating it... so good. The steak with polenta was also ridiculous. I can't wait to go back and try some more. We got a passion fruit dessert to split, which we couldn't finish being so stuffed, but it was also great.
The ambiance is small, warm, candlelit, and fun. There is a big table in the back near the bathroom that can fit maybe a party of 10ish? Would be cute for a private birthday dinner or something. The only sucky part is its between the 1 bathroom and kitchen, but that may not be that big of a deal once the delish food arrives.
Try! -

Stumbled upon this small, but great Brazilian restaurant today. The food was great and the service was excellent! Best of all was the price. Entrees ranged between $12 and $17. Not bad given how good the food was. :)

Really, a 4 star average on yelp? Maybe I need to come back and try this place one more time. It did offer a nice, cozy atmosphere for one of my girlfriends and I to catch up over a glass of wine. But the baked crab & roasted garlic dip was so fishy, we barely touched it. The calabreza sausage and bruschetta were fine, but nothing special. If there is a next time, perhaps we need to stay away from the apps and come for the entrees.

This place is fantastic.
An absolute gem in NYC.
The interior is fantastic and unique (historic). The street is beautiful (we had a great seat in the window). Beautiful flower boxes and trees outside the window.
The food is fantastic - and clearly prepared with care and thoughtfulness. I had a simple green salad with chicken - and it was DELICIOUS. My friend had the french toast wich was outstanding. Coffee is perfect. I had a wonderful lemonade.
The staff is great. And you are right in the thick of the hippest part of New York City.
I overly and highly recommend BarBossa for a unique and great New York experience. -

Wanted affordable tapas in the LES and found this little gem on Elizabeth!
It's a cute, cosy little place with flickering candle tea lights on each table.
Calamari appetizer - not fried, not super exciting.
Beet salad- so-so according to the one friend who had it
Spicy chicken wings in skillet - not too spicy, very tasty but the wings were kind of small.
Seafood stew - had a bit of a coconut milk taste, probably one of the better dishes. Seemed to have the same ingredients of the calamari appetizer, which probably made the calamari taste bland.
Sausage- super tasty, probably about 5-6 pieces in there.
Didn't have dessert, but this place is probably a good date place.
Tip-bits:
More seating in the back, ask host/hostess
Strong drinks, no pitcher option
Let's go Brazil! :)
Service was good -

It's a cute little spot half a block up from cafe habana. the bartender originally said we couldn't take a table without ordering full meals but then allowed us when he saw the lay of the land at the bar. we ended up moving back over to the bar as other friends decided to join us. we had a few beers and he offered us some sort of anchovy bread.
my pal ordered the calabreza which she said was delious I had the one of two veggie options on the appetizer menu, the bruschetta, it was also delious. we really only came here to drink, and it was well worth it. the bartender was really cool, the drinks were not weak and the bill was walle friendly.
very cool crowd for the area it's in. will def return. -

I love this place.
First I came for weekday brunch hungover as I could get and had a delicious egg sandwich. Yum!
Then one Sunday my husband and I stopped in for a few cocktails and the meat/cheese plate. So relaxing and delicious. Great service. I will make it back here again and again. -

New York, NY
Little place that packs a powerful punch.
Love the menu selection - Brazilian curries, pressed sandwiches, seafood dishes, etc.
Opted for the Portuguese seafood stew, a bowl of calamari, shrimp, mussels in a seafood broth over rice. Good, solid dish.
Their signature drink is strong. Happy hour does not disappoint!
Ended the meal with a cappucino and passionfruit pave (recommended by our waitress). This was such a light yet totally satisfying dessert!
Great restaurant, but not an ideal place for large parties. This joint be tiny! -

Short version: Great drinks; good food, great prices. Recommend it
Long version:
Went here last Friday evening with friends. We were a group of 7, and we made reservations. We ended up being seated in an alcove at the back of the restaurant, which was quite nice because we felt as if we were in our own private room.
Service: excellent. Our server was attentive without being obnoxious, answered questions well and made some good recommendations. We weren't rushed and were able to stay 25 minutes after we paid the bill.
Food: pretty good. Everyone at the table was happy with what they got (and everyone got different dishes), so that should give you a sense of the quality).
Drinks: I had the jalepeno caipirinha which was great. Not overly sweet and had a nice spicy finish from the jalepeno. A friend had the traditional caipirinha which was great also.
Full disclosure: Most people had different sandwiches because they were very reasonably priced. I had the baked bacalau (salted codfish) and pao de queijo (cheese bread). So I had the most "Brazilian" food.
My dishes were very good. Whenever I go to a Brazilian restaurant I always get the cheese bread and these were quite nice. The baked bacalau was a new dish to me, but it was a good dish: not too fishy with a little kick and nice blend b/c it also had baked potatoes in the dish. Came served in a little cast iron skillet which was a cute presentation.
Highlight: Jalapeno Caipirinha; baked bacalau. -

BarBossa serves up fairly priced, yet quite small, portions of Brazilian inspired cuisine with merguez sausage dishes, Greek salad, and curry thrown in for good measure... all prepared for the American palate. I'll pass.

Delivery review
Very small portions like the steak polenta that i got for $17. It only had 5 pieces of small steak accompanied by 5 small polenta chips. My coworkers got a variety of things as it was fairly small portions as well. I tried to order a double espresso and they said they dont deliver coffee! What!?!? We ordered about $200 worth of food and u cant deliver coffee? On top of everything the guy who took the order was hard to deal with. Im giving it 2 stars cuz the food was fairly decent tasting and delivered to us pretty fast considering peak lunch hours and it was a big order. -

We came here for a couple of drinks while waiting for our table at the nearby Cafe Habana.
When in Brazil ... drink a Caprihina. So I did, and it was pretty fantastic. It came in a tall glass, like the ones you get for a Mojito. I was expecting a chalice, full of limes and my citrus-y drink. Oh well.
I also had a Bloody Mary which was pretty darn good too.
Nice bartender, good drinks despite the small place. What do you expect for Manhattan though, right? -

I thought it would be over priced but you could eat and have a drink at this place for less than $25. I live in the neighborhood and you can't find many deals like that.
The food was so-so, but the drinks are strong and tasty. If that is what you're coming for, you will like this joint. -

My Husband & I have been going to this little neighborhood gem for a good 8 years. Food and service is always consistent. Mojitos and caipirinhas are solid (some days better than others depending who makes them). It's a go to staple when the other "scene" restaurants are packed or when we want a quick "very budget friendly" bite after a day of shopping Soho. Food is very good for the price (average $7-$12 entree).

Yelp, you let me down BIG on this one! The reviews were great, so we decided BarBossa would be our food destination.
The place is super tiny, which is fine. But don't attempt to.put 2 people who want to eat at a 10 inch diameter round table. Luckily, we were able to move to a standard square table.
We had 2 capirinahs at $8 each. There was not much consistency in the drinks. One round was much stronger than the other. Next we had the cheese bread app. It was good. The main course is where the let down was. We had the calabreza sandwich and feijoada. The sandwich we had was supposed to have sausage on it as the main attraction. There was like 1 strip of 1/4 in sausage. Yay. Lots of bread. Big letdown. The feijoada dish consisted of pork, beans, rice and some collard greens. That's it. No flavors, no spices, nothing. It was actually just rice with a can of beans dumped on top, roasted pork and steamed collard greens. Blandest dish ever.
On the way to the nicest part of the place, the bathroom, (decorated with vintage magazine and newspaper photos, very cool), I found a reason why the food may be sub-par. The "kitchen" was about 3 x 6 feet, in the hallway, with the same person cooking and doing dishes. Interesting.
On the bright side our server was very nice.
At the end of it all though, it actually pained me to hand over $70.
Maybe I just ordered the wrong dishes, I don't know. But I will not be going back to find out. -

On a muggy midsummer's evening stroll through the calm streets of East Soho, singing in the rain and wished that Gene Kelly was there to sing with me. It was time to conclude the week with a Brazilian meal so good that if I ever looked back on this day, I would only remember the food and not the rain.
I had quite the date here with my friend, who I am always grateful of having in this beast of a city, as we watched the rain fall while drying off our radiantly glistening skin. With her, I enjoyed one of the most satisfying meals of the week!
When the entrees arrived, I gleamed with a big smile when I took the first bite because it provided the comfort that I needed and even when we sat near the large open windows, I was warm.
The Feiojada was a traditional brazilian black bean pork stew with collard greens, farofa & rice. A tasty dish with all the macro and micronutrients I needed --protein, carbs, fiber and fat along with some polyphenols, sodium and a garnish of Vitamin C from the orange slices on top...the pork was tender, lean, and the rice, beans and collard greens just served as accessories that happened to compliment the meat perfectly. I assembled a bite on my fork with all the different things on my plate and the verdict? Scrumptious!
The Chicken & Mango Coconut Curry was a mild, sweet curry with cilantro & cashew nuts over rice. I thought this was beautifully plated! The yellow of the curry with the mango chunks peeking through the stew were like rays of the sun that failed to shine today. I was getting my tumeric fix in the curry, a highly studied anti-inflammatory superfood in the media nowadays with cancer prevention success. The chicken was nicely schredded and the coconut in the curry provided a nutty, creamy and tropical flavor and aroma. Coconut milk is high in saturated fat, but the main saturated fat is lauric acid, which is found in mother's milk, shown to promote brain development and bone health.
Their happy hour is not to miss, equiped with special priced cocktails, beer and wine till 7pm and on the weekends breakfast is served until 5 pm to the fit the weekend lifestyles for many New Yorkers! I can see this little place filling up on a busy night/day and would highly suggest coming during non-peak times...Obrigado!Listed in: Latin American

While the food has never blown me away, the combo of decent eats, good drinks, good vibe and good service lends itself to four stars. Plus, it's a great back-up if you're headed to Cafe Habana and the wait is too long. Oh, and I'm a sucker for Caipirinhas, especially if they have fresh fruit in them.

What was supposed to be casual meandering turned into hours of desperate searching for a fairly inexpensive late night meal. At this point, I was really tired of walking and my being hungry had now turned into being cranky.
Oh hello, BarBossa. Its dim lights, chill music and open windows lured me in. Taking a look at the menu, there were lots of inexpensive drink and food options. A perfect little two person table planted in one of the open front windows made for the perfect spot to finally plunk down and relax.
We were greeted by the friendly bartender who suggested a couple delicious drinks. We tried the portuguese seafood stew and some other dish similar to lasagna that I can't remember the name of. Both were amazing! My crank session ended and I enjoyed a delicious and cheap meal in a chill yet energizing and happy environment.
Will definitely keep it in mind for next time I'm wandering hungry. -
Review from Dana F.
BarBossa has a great happy hour deal - $5 caipirinha and house wine and $4 beer until 7pm. The caipirinhas are super-strong and are of the perfect sweetness.
We were seated in the back room of the tiny restaurant, where you can see all sorts of Brazilian futbol (in Yankspeak, soccer) jerseys hanging in the alleyway.
We shared some appetizers which were not that great. The crab dip did not have very much crab - it had a lot of filler. The pao de queijo was lacking in cheese and really dry.
The drinks are good, but you can get better Brazilian food elsewhere. -

Barbossa is the perfect place to catch up with your 'ol pal who moved to LA for an arts program...and run into yoga pals! Get there before 7PM and enjoy $5 caiparinhas, mojitos and house wine. All that rum made it all the more easy for those 20-somethins war stories on breakups, bad dates, career struggles, etc to roll right off my parched tongue. Good thing I don't have to get ready and commute to work - cuz I'm sure gonna feel those three mojitos in the morning.

Bronx, NY
It was a rainy, gloomy Friday afternoon, (lots of those going around this summer, no?) and I was desperate for sunshine and a cocktail. Fortunately by 5:15 p.m. the clouds parted and I busted out of the office to Nolita for BarBossa's killer Happy Hour -- $5 select cocktails, including their famed caipirihnas.
My reviews occasionally extend past the drinks themselves and include a bit of dish for the ladies about the boys behind the bar. Well guys, here's one for you -- BarBossa's Simone (pronounced Sih-moan-ay) is fresh from Brazil herself and an undeniable knockout (not a term I bestow lightly). Ladies, don't hate -- she's also super sweet / knowledgeable when it comes to Brazilian booze. We even "collaborated" on changing up things for my last round, adding passion fruit to temper a spicy jalepeno selection. I'm a big fan of their overall cocktail philosophy. They don't claim to offer every drink under the sun, or that their bartenders have years of formal training, but they specialize in simple, regional cocktails and what they do, they do well -- and at reasonable prices. NYC nightlife, is that really so much to ask?
On the food side, Simone graciously offered some free, crunchy mini-pizza bites for snacking (just another reason to always sit at the bar -- happy liver AND happy tummy). We didn't opt for a full meal but everything looked and smelled great. Sandwiches / paninis are under $10, and main plates mostly under $15. They have an intimate back room near the bathrooms that could be perfect for dinner parties.
If you're looking for a delightful, casual place to wile away the hours, soak up Elizabeth St. people-watching or -- let's face it -- gawk at the gorgeous girl givin' you shugah (with your drink, of course), BarBossa's spot-on.Listed in: Drinks w/ a Dash of Style

Homemade fennel sausage! Sausages made in-house. Yes, really. They make their own sausage. With fennel!
Get the homemade fennel sausage sandwich with cheese and salsa. It comes on a grilled baguette - they even cut the top of the baguette off so that when you bite into it, you don't cut or scrape the roof of your mouth. I personally think that's a nice little touch.
The roasted chicken salad is also really good. It comes with some variety of nut (slivered almonds?), little orange slices and pecorino. Very good and seems to be good for you too.
They also serve breakfast until 4pm which is good for egg lovers.
Most importantly, this place didn't used to serve hard booze but they do now. Yay! Real caipirinhas! -
Review from Kevin N.
Tiny -- almost delicate -- with a touch of old world sensibility and refinement, from the petite water glasses to the occasional soccer jerseys blowing in the breeze near the back of the room. BarBossa is a place where the old country and new sentiments intermingle in a refined-meets-comfortable manner, and that has to be at least one of the reasons I end up pulling up a chair here each time I'm in the city.
It's a setup that reminds you to be in the moment but seldom in a hurry, and that's a careful balance not each restaurant can pull off. I tend to end up sampling the Mango Chicken Curry (I mean, seriously, what's not to like), gazing out upon Nolita and inevitably plotting a next move. This kind of environment begs a little experimentation, and in my experience, isn't that half the fun? There's not much like sampling and watching the shade hit the buildings opposite, where the last thing you note is the actual time.
Because sometimes, just because, the proof isn't in the pudding or the most expedient result. Sometimes, just because, it's more about how you lose yourself in between.Listed in: Apples. Big Apples. New York…

Came here for dinner at the suggestion of a friend. It's a cute little cafe, very fun atmosphere and crowd. I ordered the cold ginger-tomato soup, the seafood stew, and the chocolate Guiness cake. The food and drinks were all pretty good and I left feeling satisfied.
One plus, the service was very good and our waiter was fun and helpful. Overall, the food was good but not amazing. I'm not in New York very often, so I probably wouldn't return unless I were staying for a longer period of time. -

Ridiculously cute and intimate little restaurant in Nolita. Great place to have dinner at with friends. The waitress was really nice, although it took them forever to pump out our entrees... I ordered the prosciutto pressed sandwich and it was definitely lacking in flavor :( I went with a couple of vegetarians and they found a few items on the menu that worked for them, so I guess this place is semi-vegetarian friendly? Although the vegetarians I was with are probably not your typical cookie-cutter types. IE: My friend Sarah has a guilty pleasure of occasionally eating pepperoni haha.
To sum it up: adorable place, great value, great location, mediocre food. -

Here's something weird - I've been to BarBossa four times, and I just realized that it was a Sunday evening all four times. Uncanny. It must be a Sunday evening kinda place!
The shrimp and avocado curry is outstanding. It instantly transported me to a shack on the beachside in Costa Rica where I had eaten the exact same dish three days in a row because it was just THAT good. Incidentally, that joint was run by a Brazilian guy, so it must be an authentic brazilian dish! Other hits included the baked crab and artichoke dip, the avocado, queso fresco & picco de gallo pressed sandwich, and of course, the caiprinhas. Not to forget, the extremely chill vibe which makes you never want to leave.
May I also add that the bartender/waitress (owner?) there is shockingly gorgeous. I'm definitely going to the 2016 olympics! -

Good but not great..
Tasty but not memorable..
Cozy but not comfortable..
That pretty much sums up my experience. I had the hollow spaghetti noodles with the spicy sausage. Good spot if you're in the area and there's no wait. With so many other restaurants in the area, I may or may not return.. we shall see.
Back room might be good for larger parties though. -

It's a really tiny space, very family feel, sort of the place you just like to walk into (but unfortunately it's a popular spot so you should call ahead unless eating early or late).
The Hot Skillets are the way to go at dinner, like the Fresh Calabreza Sausage with Onions, or the Spicy Lemon Shrimp. I thought the Baked Crab was not really that good, but I'd recommend the Watercress Salad - also with sausage - and goat cheese, even as a meal.
The Mango Chicken Curry is a house favorite, and their Daily Specials are always worth a listen.
A friend of mine said that their French Toast at brunch is a nice way to start out your day.
Sangria by the pitcher is another sure thing, and extra points for carrying Brahma Beer! -

This is a great after work spot. I much prefer going here for it's bar qualities than the food. The food is good, just nothing special, better to have appetizers than dinner I would say. They do drinks much, much better. They have a nice selection of beer and wine and they make seasonal cocktails, which is a welcome treat. You'll see them behind the lil' bar working with the pestle to mash up mint and fruits to pour into fresh bevvies.
The staff is quite attentive, making sure they ask you if you want a refill before you're glass is empty; a rarity, I think in the SOHO area. So just prepare to get really, really drunk (no, I mean REALLY DRUNK) and then eat some tasty proveleta that's delivered to you in a mini skillet.Listed in: The Places I Go Out
