Driving into Bar Harbor you see this little place on the side of the road & notice all the cars parked haphazardly along the highway. Some may think nothing to themselves, my husband & I however made a mental note.  We took a stroll through Bar Harbor and decided that not a single restaurant looked like what we were looking for: a no frills, pay for the lobster, not the decor sort of place.  We drove back up to this place, parked with the other cars, walked in and were filled with joy.

This is the place to get lobster in Bar Harbor. Forget the overpriced places in town. If you don't need white table cloths, waiters & like the idea of providing your own booze COME HERE!  During our 3-4 day stay in the area, we came here twice and ate a bucket of steamers (note: the sea water is to DIP INTO & wash off sand before dipping it into the butter), 2 1/2 2lb lobsters apiece & was washed down with some delicious Blue Paw Blueberry Ale.

Bring bug spray as the picnic tables are on grass and you will more than likely get bit if you come in for a sunset/dusk dinner. Can't remember if you need your own crackers, but bring them if you have them to be sure. Get down & dirty & have the time of your life doing it. This is the REAL Maine.

My only gripe: they close after Columbus Day weekend. A silly gripe to have sure, but given that foliage peaks the week AFTER Columbus Day, I think they should stay open an extra week. They sure would have had my business my second time in the area, had they been open.  If you'd like to make an afternoon of it, go to Made In Maine down the road to stock up on delicious jams & finish it with a dinner here.  Can't think of a better way to support the community.

We drove by about 50 lobster pounds in Maine and finally decided we needed to visit one! We chose this little dive right outside of downtown Bar Harbor. Now I say "dive" affectionately because this place was terrific. We both ordered a 1 1/2 pound lobster meal with corn on the cob and cole slaw for $19.95. We got to go down to the lobster bin and choose our own lobsters and they steamed them right up for us. It was one of the messiest, but most delicious meals I had in Maine topped off with a terrific Blueberry soda.
