Lunch made spicy. Awesome little hole in the wall spot. Quick service and delicious, Spicy sandwich.

I had: The spicy sloppy bao sandwich and it was tastyyyyyyyyy!! Fresh jalapenos and Sriracha sauce had my mouth on fire and I loved every bite! Def some soda/milk would be a great idea. Pretty big sandwich, you could share (but I couldn't put it down!) . The bread tasted fresh and crunchy.

Perfect: to take ToGo (very dirty dirty/deli counter vibe)

They do take credit cards, but must spend $10 --so cash is king

The catfish is really great, not tough, and no fishy odor. Sometimes the bread is not as hot as I'd like, but it's still always tasty and crispy. To the "how spicy" question, just keep in mind that spicy is very very spicy. I almost never find something this spicy when eating out -- I had to take a break in the middle of lunch to down water!

$10 minimum for credit card, and I think the prices have gone up. It's almost $8 for the catfish after tax, less for the regular baoguette.

I LOVE bahn mi sandwiches!  If it were up to me, there would be a bahn-mi joint on every block!

I ordered a baoguette with pork, pate, etc.  The baguette was nice and crunchy.  The veggies were fine.  BUT the filling was just ok... not great.  Personally I like to taste much more of the pate.  The meat in this sandwich was just lacking flavor.  I didn't think the quality of the pate or pork were great.

The staff was fast and friendly.  They just need to work on the overall taste a bit more.

The first time I tried this place I was totally blown away. I got the baoguette with pork, pate, and veggies. The bread was kinda crunchy on the outside & super soft on the inside. I went back another time but it wasn't as great as I remembered but still yummy! Definitely a quick lunch option when you feel like something different.

The vegetarian option here is not made from tofu. My guess is that they use wheat gluten. It didn't taste very fresh either. I'd stick with the original or the catfish versions here.

Tasty bahn mi. Not the best I have ever had. The bread and toppings were all perfect but the pork they use (while I was not expecting the best) is pretty well below par.

Good spot for lunch at around 6 bucks.

3.5..Ordered the BBQ chicken banh mi.  It did not have an especially BBQ taste.  Lots of crunchy shredded carrot, cilantro, lettuce and chilis.  I like extra hot so they put hot sauce on the sandwich as well and my lips were on fire!...in a good way.  The sandwich needed salt and was bit too sweet. The bread was very good.  Big big sandwich for 6 bucks.

The original. Michael Bao was the first to introduce this typical Vietnamese sandwich to New Yorkers anda bahn mi doesn't get any better than this.  This is the first of several Baoguettes in the city, and the most humble of all of them. The Sloppy Bao is my second favorite. When first opened, I never understood how they could sell this sandwich at a ridiculously low $5 and it managed to stay that way for a few years. It's now up to a still very reasonable $6.25 and as satisfying as any sandwich you'd happily pay for twice the price for at, say, 'wichcraft. A perfect, satisfying lunch. And a major bright spot in this kind of skanky block near the armory.

PS--If you want an example of how this sandwich SHOULD NOT be made, just try the knockoff at recently opened Luu's Baoguette around the corner. You'll be sorry.

Every time I finish one of these delicious sandwiches, they leave me craving more. I started out getting the classic, but one day I decided to go with the BBQ chicken- holy crapoli... one of the best decisions I have ever made. So cheap and so delicious. Also the shrimp summer rolls are worth trying... the peanut sauce served with them is soo good. It is dangerous that this place is only a few blocks from my office.

I wish people didn't give good reviews about places that are really not that special.

I went out of my way to come here after work once and was disappointed with the banh mi. I tried both the classic and the BBQ and was not impressed with either.

The bread is just plain bread, meat was okay, the vegetables were not that fresh. It was bearable. I would only come here if I was desperately craving for banh mi, maybe once a year.

By the way, not to ruin your appetite, but I'm having diarrhea this morning after having their banh mi for dinner last night. It was either Baoguett's banh mi or Bao Noodle's banh mi. Bao Noodle's was better so I wouldn't mind having theirs despite the diarrhea but if it was Baoguette's banh mi that did the job, I would be pissed. I wouldn't be surprised, since the ambiance of this place doesn't exactly scream "clean" and "inviting".

$6~$7 for this? Please people. Go to Boston and try one of their banh mi in the back alleys shops of real Vietnamese-Chinese ladies and have something 2x, 3x better for $3.

    Not coming back.

The bahn mi is solid, but far from the best. The service is quick ... I've only ever ordered from the counter. There is a small shelf along the back if you want to scarf food down quickly, its really a take out place. However, you can't beat $6 for a sandwich. When I have a craving and no time to go get a good bahn mi, this fits the bill fine.  Will have to try the sloppy bao next ...

I'm embarrassed.  Banh mi takes over the world and it takes me forever to get my ass to a place that makes such wonderful creations.  I feel like I don't even know myself anymore.

It's a sandwich, the sandwich has pork.  Of course it's good.  But, it's really good because they take their time and make it right. The sandwich is put together so in every bite you're getting a little bit of everything.  And the bread is exactly what you'd want it to be, a nice crunch on the outside but still soft and sopping up all that porky goodness on the inside.

Don't be like me friend (of if I don't know you, random person reading this).  Don't wait to experience the banh mi, get it done.

Going to New York for a visit or live there and still don't know about this place? Recognize.

Legit, authentic, bad-ass, life changing, real. These are all adjectives that could be used to describe this little sandwich shop. Bahn who? Bahn mi. That's all you need to know.

If the smell of the subway doesn't ruin your appetite (generic New York cliche inserted), you should walk, ride, Rollerblade, bike or long board (shout out to the hipsters!) to this spot immediately.

Love the layer by layer pics inside of the bahn mi.

There seems to be quite a bit of review of a cheaper price, but I know that the BBQ chicken is $6.80 now.

It is around the block from where I live and work, so it is easily accessible and cheap for lunch. One of the best baguettes that I've ever had a banh mi on!

Although, the actual ingredients are just decent. It is delicious overall, but it isn't the best banh mi in the city. Cheap lunch and accessible though!

"I never want this to end."
    "What is in this thing!?"
"I never want this to end."

I was actually physically saddened when my baoguette (classic, mild. extra pickled veggies, light on the peppers) was finished. All that remained was a slightly see through piece of wax paper, wadded up napkins and the notion that Vietnamese sandwiches really are the most wonderful lunch solution on a dime.

Coming it at around $5/pop...well, hells bells why wouldn't you!? The bread is just the slightest bit sweet, soft, but hard enough to hold the supple sandwich, and the freshy fresh ingredients are spilled about in abundance. Perfect chaos going on in there. Pickled, spicy, classic, crazy...whatever you desire, it'll come out alright. Such is the world.

So, I ate two baoguettes in a week. Shameful? I think not. Different days, different malaise, and Baoguette to the rescue.

Couple it with a Peel drink in the flavor of ginger root and lemon (in the cooler), and well I'm perfectly equipped to tackle the latter half of the day sometimes referred to as "between lunch and dinner."

*Not a place to sit and stay. Grab your grub and hit the road, those stools aren't really positioned well for lollygagging. Plus, you'll need elbow room to attack that bad boy. Preferably not in public. Eating Viet sandwiches is decidedly an unladylike endeavor, indeed.

    *Pre-order online and pick-up! Bam.

*Line moves swiftly. Sandwiches fly out at rapid pace. Though the line may appear long, do not fret. It is all worth. Good sandwiches come to those that wait.

Will have to show great restraint.

I am for some reason having such a hard time properly phrasing this review, but here goes - Baoguette is this little unexpected sandwich shoppe tucked in amongst a whole bunch of mediocre food establishments on Lexington Ave. I passed it a million times without giving it a second thought until a few people recommended that I try it out.

I started by going in and sharing with someone - we did a medium catfish banh mi and a mild classic (pork) banh mi. My favorite part about it was the amazing bread - and the fresh veggies. The pork and catfish were both good and the fish tasted fresh. I don't know how it's traditionally cooked but I almost wish the fish was breaded a bit crispier. They both had polar opposite flavors, but very prominent flavors. The catfish has a very strong pickled flavor, but it's nice.

The prices were reasonable, and the food was prepared fast and served hot. I will most likely return when in need of a banh mi.

    Bahn you?  NO!  Bahn Mi!!

Holy god these are amazing sammiches.  I walked here from Gramercy two days in a row for lunch in the NY summer heat it was THAT good.  I got the Veguette, spicy of course, for $7.95 and others got the traditional Baoguette with Pork (I don't dig on swine) or BBQ Chicken and all agreed this was a serious spot.  Food was ready in about 2 minutes (gotta love NY service) and that's about how long it took me to finish this off it was so good.

Go here, or actually don't because I want it to stay awesome!

    Now hit the bricks kiddos.

VERY fast and VERY cheap and still good. That's a combo in New York that is hard to beat and even harder to find.

I had the pork and my friend had the catfish, and both of us were impressed.

That said, here are a few gripes. The place is tiny, so you have to grab and go. Fortunately, Madison Park is close by in the warmer months, for a more pleasant decor eating experience.

Also, granted I like my shit pretty spicy, but I was surprised at how many people complained about how insanely hot the food is. I asked them to make it spicy, and what I got, I would call medium at best. Guess I'll have to say "very" next time. And, there will be a next time. It's no Num Pang, but it's closer to work, and it's pretty damn good.

I love the Baoguette on St. Mark's Place, so I knew that this would become a staple for me, once I started working nearby. I had come here months earlier and didn't quite like my banh mi compared to the St. Mark's location, as the bread was too crispy and a bit hard to bite into and chew. However, it seems as though, recently, they have made their banh mis better.

I always stick with the classic Baoguette (pork, non spicy -- $6.25.). It tastes fresh and comes out pretty quickly. Their classic baoguette is quite delicious. Maybe one day, I'll try another kind. But for now, I love their pork banh mi.

Baoguette is an awesome restaurant.  For 6 bucks you get a delicious banh mi on a very fresh bread.  I like sticking to their standard baoguette as the other sandwiches aren't nearly as good.  Make mine with extra cilantro and extra spicy and I'm in heaven.  It's worth taking a subway ride to this place during my lunch hour just to get a good sandwich which is far and above any of the other delis in midtown.  It's not a sandwich that will completely stuff you but just enough to not be hungry and it's a pretty good buy.

I didn't really like Baoguette's sandwiches. I thought Paris Sandwich Bakery's viet sandwiches in chinatown tasted better and it's also cheaper there.

I didn't not like the SPICY CATFISH. Avoid it at all costs.
You can't go wrong with the CLASSIC. it tasted the same as other viet sandwiches just that it's more expensive here.

    PROS:
    - CLASSIC SANDWICH
    - I liked the fact that they give you the option of SPICY or NOT SPICY.

    CONS:
    - SPICY CATFISH - it tasted sort of funky - i think they added some relish or sour pickle with the catfish that ruined the whole sandwich. THUMBS DOWN.
-Place is SMALL and SQUISHY. it was uncomfortable while eating there.

I had the "classic" sandwich offering.  For $6.50 it was a total steal.  One nice sized baguette filled with delicious Vietnamese ingredients (yes, including pork).

At $7.00, the summer rolls weren't as good of a value (less filling, more expensive), but were good in their own right and compared to other restaurants offer a comparable value as far as appetizers go.

The bottled green tea they offer is also worth getting if you haven't tried it elsewhere.  Considering that it has 0 calories and 0 sugar, it's incredibly tasty.

AHHHH I just got a job that is walking distance from there.

I'll just have to work out even harder.

I've had the Pork and the Catfish banh mi.
Pork was def waaaay waaaaay better. But the catfish was still good.
The Pork was AMAZING. Amazing. amazing. aMAZING.

I don't know how cheap banh mi is suppose to be but its Manhattan, folks got rent and overhead to pay. So for $6 I'm a happy camper.

I now understand why my homeboy from NOLA insisted that I go to the hood where the Vietnamese run the corner stores to get my po' boy. Cause when I bit into that pork banh mi it reminded me of a po' boy. I like it spicy and it was waaaaaay bigger than the $9 sandwich I had at Nam Pung (booo to them :()

Neat little eatery.  The classic sandwich is great and at $6-8 it is a steal (perhaps thanks to many Americans' aversion to "ethnic" foods that prevents them from getting too overpriced.. love it!).

Make sure to take a look at all the glass jars of weird ingredients to the left of the register.

A number of delicious-looking variations on the vietnamese sandwich also offered on the menu that may  require return visits.  You have been warned.

This is one of my favorite places to go around Baruch College in between classes.

The service is super fast, and the food is super good. I normally have the regular (with pork), but sometimes, if in the mood, will get the BBQ Chicken sandwich. They're both amazing.

I've also tried the "Sloppy Bao", which uses a sloppy joe-style pulled beef. This is up to personal taste, but I've hated sloppy joes since elementary school, and even an excellently made one is terrible to me. I can't stand the taste. But if it's your thing, enjoy.

They also have a non-sandwich menu, of which i've only tried the shrimp rolls with peanut dressing. I really liked these, I expected some sort of chinese take-out style fried rolls, but they were in fact some super light, very tasty rolls. They were wrapped in a tissue-paper thin noodle bun, and filled to the brim with fresh salad and shrimp, which were complemented quite nicely by the peanut dressing they gave with it. Delicious, but not very filling. Still, its nice that they have such healthy options in addition to their sandwiches.

My only complain with the place, and one that cost them a star, is the atmosphere. Atmosphere is a huge part of a dining experience to me, and this place could do with a bit less Mariachi music playing in the background, and some nicer lighting, and perhaps a bit more Vietnameseness... it feels like your ordinary queens bodega when you walk in.

But that's a small issue. The prices are reasonable, the food is great, and being less than a block away from my school it's excellently located.

This is one of the best banh mi places in the city.
The place inside is a bit cramped, so it's more of an order out place. The seating is just a bunch of stools along a wall. The counter people were Vietnamese and the guys in the back were Mexican, but of course, that's typical for NYC!

I've only had the classic baoguette from here which was only $5, and it is awesome. Bread is nicely toasted, and the ingredients used in the sandwich are of a good quality. They are very fresh. I recommend that you ask for the sandwich to be spicy. The spiciness mixed with the sweetness and tanginess creates a flavor explosion. They offer several sandwich options including beef, BBQ chicken, and catfish.

Ahhhh the wonderful taste of Baoguettes. The sandwiches that I've had have all been very good, especially considering its convenient to my apartment, fast and inexpensive. Are there better Baoguettes? Probably yes, in Vietnam and in a place where there are actually substantial amounts of Vietnamese people. But this place does the spot. The sloppy bao is a bit too oily, and the catfish one is a bit less interesting than one would hope, but the name pork one is perfect.
I've tried the salad, with maybe Mango, and it was also good. All in all a great place to pick up good food to eat for lunch.

Coworker placed a lunch order for us. 90 minutes and NO FOOD. We called, nobody answering. The Wall Street number is disconnected. The Gramercy location? Finally talked to a human being, but he hung up on me TWICE. Subsequent calls either went unanswered or picked up and hung up. Now the phone is off the hook.

Meanwhile, our $72 lunch order is still missing and there is NOBODY we can talk to. What kind of horrendous customer service is this? Food is ok, but the orders have always taken a long time in the past, or were mixed up, but this is the worst.

Never ever ever giving them my business again. One of the most infuriating customer service experiences I can remember.

P.S. We finally sent an intern out to get our food, and the folks at Boaguette informed him that not only did they not get the order (despite us receiving a confirmation email timestamped 12:48) but that they don't deliver as far as our offices (despite the fact that we have ordered from them NUMEROUS TIMES before). Never again.

A rock solid lunch option. For $6 you can get a sandwich with vietnamese ham, pate, glazed pork, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, jalapenos, and cilantro.

Basically it's an excursion into the fast eating world of lunch-break flavor. I've had better Banh Mi's in my day, but considering I can walk 5 minutes from my office and purchase this sandwich for a reasonable sum (and a Boylan's Cream Soda) SOLD.

I'm Vietnamese American, born and raised near VIetnamese enclaves in California. It's hard to find good Viet food in New York City and this is one of the best places I've been to so far. As another reviewer have said, it's "legit" and I'll definitely be back.

I love tiny spaces, pate and word mash-ups. So why do I just "like like" Baoguette?

My namesake banh mi cradled passable pickles, savory pork and a bucket of oily sheen. The plain paper wrap glistened a wondrous transparency in the five minute walk from order to nom-time, which subsequently coated the crunchewy loaf, my hands and most of Madison Square Park.

But - hey - five bucks, fresh cilantro and the ability to boast "EXTRA HOT PLEASE!" to a sardine can of who-the-hell-cares business lunchers means I'll likely be back for a second chance.

Although Popeye's is right next door...

Just tried this place for the first time. I had the veggie banh mi. It was pretty good. Very fresh bread. Lots of veggies. A nice sweet/spicy sauce. As others note, there's not much room to sit. It's also kind of weird to eat a messy sandwich in front of the mirror that lines the table along the wall. Not sure who came up with that design.

All in all, a good place to go.

As a picky Italian I would have never imagined to go to this place...but after many people advised and since I go to Baruch College half a block away, I couldn't avoid going there once....I fell in love with their bread..it is just so tasty that it's worth the visit.....I ate the sloppy bao not spicy and it was a combination of creamy meat and vegetables that just melted in my mouth....the place is small, does not surely catch your eyes...However they are supposed to sell food...and their food is tasty...Definitely going back...

If you are alone make sure you bring cash....unless you know you re gonna spend 10$ which is the minimum for the credit card....

Best bargain in the area hands down.

$5 - 6 for a very flavorfull, satisfying lunch. I've only really tried the traditional banh mi (think asian bbq pork sandwich, with asian slaw) and the beef green curry banh mi but both were delicious.

If you have an iron stomach go SPICY. But be warned. I usually forego that and just put slather on the sriracha sauce (sort of a garlicky thai ketchup)

This is a regular on my work lunch rotation.

In search of a tasty banh-mi sammich, I headed straight to yelp and found the two Saigon places way east and baguette a tad closer to where I am so we hit up the place we have been walking past for months and always wanted to go into - all it took was seeing the reviews on yelp to get me thru the door.

We ordered the grilled pork banh mi, the spicy beef banh mi, and a bowl of pho to share. The sandwiches were really great: fresh baked bread (in think they do it on premise? If not, they toast this really fresh bread there. The grilled pork was crispy and flavorful with zesty pickled veggies and just the right flavors. Spicy beef offered ground up crispy beef with all the same fixins and was fantastic as well. Add some sriracha and jalapenos and you're off to the races!

Unfortunately but not surprisingly, the pho left much to be desired. The broth was not flavorful and had too much oil. The beef had flavor but it was not a good one - almost gamey.

The food at more authentic places is probably better but the top 40 pop radio and urban chic decor (rather than bare bones communist-simplistic dining rooms of more traditional Vietnamese places) make up for it. It's def worth going here, but stick with the sandwiches if you do.
