Banning's is your typical 24 hour diner that serves a variety of dishes all day , everyday. I myself ordered a breakfast skillet type dish around dinner time. The food was good but not amazing, I am sure that this place would taste a lot better after a long night involving alcohol.  One  fluke worth mentioning however, is the dedicated lottery room. I have never seen such a room before and it did catch me off guard.

I would probably give this place 4 stars but I have not tried the pie yet and they did not have malted milkshakes on the menu and lets just say that, unless the pie is absolutely amazing, this lack  of malts will still probably keep it in the 3 range.........in my opinion no self respecting diner should exist without malted milkshakes.

In any case the meal cost less than $20 for two people, and it was quite filling. I will likely return to try the pie at some point and unless their are more diner's in the area which operate 24/7 I will definitely return for some grub.

Banning's holds a special place in my heart. We spent many, many hours smoking and drinking coffee here before we realized smoking wasn't cool and there is better coffee to be found all over Portland. Until that time though, Banning's was it. The waitresses were always friendly and helpful. Our coffee was always full and they always had matches or a lighter for when I did not.
I have gone back to Banning's a few times a year since then. I no longer sit in the smoking section, but the food is always the same and the service is good.

Banning's is your average run-of-the-mill 24 hour Diner.  That's it in a nutshell.  All sorts of food from breakfast to sandwiches to dinners, with, as the name would suggest, a great selection of pies... & other desserts too.  No surprises here though.
I will tell you, the breakfast food is good.  Even when you're sober, & it's actually breakfast time!  The sandwiches & hamburgers are also on par.  i had to go with 3 stars though..... the location is a bit out there..... & as far as I'm concerned, the prices are a tiny bit high.

I'm in the neighborhood so this is the place I go for breakfast on weekends or late night pie with friends. Recently remodeled to be more open (I preferred the more private booths).  Mostly fast service unless students on holiday go to Bannings en mass on a weekend night.

A friend orders the five layer chocolate cake with ice cream. It's a mountain.

This 24 hour roadside diner-ish diner is a great selection if you find yourself in the burbs and too lazy to cook your own breakfast. Portions are large, prices are decent and the staff is ultra friendly. I would like extra emphasis placed on 'ultra'.

There's one breakfast dish, some kind of stuffed hasbrowns. Cheese upon grease upon more cheese upon a stack of hashbrowns. Heart attack on a plate before you, and so good.

Sometimes a pros/cons list is the only way to go...

Pros:
-Open 24 hours
-Yummy yummy breakfast fare
-Accommodating staff (pretty sure the omelette/french toast with strawberries combo my friend ordered was NOT on the menu)

Cons:
-Location...somewhere on that long drive between the I-5 junction and Tigard
-For being a pie house, the pies looked a little sketchy...we had to ask what many of them were because they just didn't look right (dark brown lemon meringue anyone?)
-Atmosphere that left a lot to be desired

Needless to say, I wasn't 100% won over by Banning's. But they did make a mean ham and cheese omelette and I would choose them over Shari's any day.

The king of 24 hour pie shops in my ever so humble opinion!  If you need pie at 3am they're there for you!  If you need coffee and a place to chat late into the night, they're there for you!  If you want fast service at 3am, well then you should probably try another pie place.  This was my favorite late-nite dining spot when I lived over in Tigard.  And, as far as food quality goes it kicks the pants off that other place (whose name rhymes with berries).  Their marionberry pie is exquisite, especially a la mode.  They also have a Mounds cake with rich creamy coconut, and chocolate.  And I have never left there hungry, or wondering why I just paid for that meal.

The place could use a little updating, because it has that slight musk of a place that has been around a few years.  The staff can be a little quirky, and slow, but every time I've been there they have been friendly, and sometimes funny.  In fact almost every time I go there someone in the back yells something weird or screams, which might detour some people, but I find it to be part of the charm. They even have a sandwich, soup/salad, and pie combo.  And I'm all about it.  Check it out if you're over there.

Not a bad place. For the first time going it was delicious, they had a great selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Delicious pie and a wonderful waitstaff. We plan to make this our late night getaway and it's a wonderful thing that they are open 24 hrs. Woooooo.

Since there are not a ton of 24 hour restaurants in the Portland area, it's nice that this one is always open. The food is usually pretty decent, the service is sometimes decent (but sometimes a little slow), and the price is fairly reasonable even if it's not exactly a bargain. They do have a decent variety and good desserts.
