Decent Indian fare - really good malai kofta and some of the best biryani, good veggie samosas with nice coriander and tamarind sauces. Had a salmon masala here once which was quite good. At noon they have a buffet, which I've never tried, but friends like it OK. I often order delivery from here - they have a large delivery area - I live in Butcher's Hill/Patterson Park, and they deliver all the way over there.
I was unimpressed with Banjara.
We arrived for an early dinner and were the only people in the restaurant. It still took them several minutes to seat us and take our order. Like Gunnar K, we were also not asked about spice level and received some pretty bland Indian food. One of our orders of Naan came out cold.
I might try this place again, asking for some spices. As it stands now, it's just a notch below decent.
Service was slow, on a Saturday night when there were not many customers. Wait staff seemed to be hanging around doing nothing.
When the papadam finally came, the tamarind and coriander chutneys were watery. None of the food was spicy, we were not asked about spice level. Flavors were bland for Indian food. It was passable food but I expect much, much more out of an Indian restaurant.
The City Paper review hints at the blandness of the food, but lacks the courage to call it like they see it. Don't bother unless they get it together and serve up some flavor.
