if you have not checked thins place out yet you must! It is a tiny little place and it's located in a little strip mall next to some crazy stores the place can sometimes be crazy busy exspecially at lunch time. they have one inside table and 2 outside but most people get stuff to go.
the food is great! I ordered the BBQ pork banh mi sandwich and a iced-Vietnamese coffee. The pork was really good & juicy, yet I wish it to be more plentiful but these sandwiches are not all about the meat. The veggies were a tasty and a nice/good blend of colorful sourness and crunch. the sandwich bread was toasted just right . The coffee was nice and creamy...
Worthy of a stop if you happen to be in the area. -

These are by far the worst Vietnamese sandwiches in East Bay. I have much better sandwiches in the nearby cities.
The bread is too hard. It seems like they like to use hard, stale bread, because it's extremely difficult to bite into, and makes the rest of the sandwich untasty.
Price is pretty ridiculous. $3.00 for a less than average sandwich? I rather pass. -

This deli is located inside "Peppermint Tree Plaza" in case you miss it driving by looking for this joint.
*Two small tables outside
* One table inside.
*Mostly take-out
They do serve pho, bun bo xue. There is a Pho noodle shop a few stores down and it's called "Bliss".
Got the #4 with Pate. (25 cent extra for Pate). The cha lua was one piece. They were a bit frugal with the pickled carrots, no daikons noticed. The bread was a bit soft but crisp on the outside. It was worth the $3.00.
The place to go to if you cannot make it to Tenderloin's Saigon Sandwich Shop. -

Great little sandwich shop. Love the pork meatball sandwich. They have other rice plate, noodle type packed items also. Shrimp chips & other Japanese type chips also. Cheap & delicious.

I love the sandwiches, but if you have a chance, get the whole BBQ chicken in the refrigerated case. It's made fresh every day, and is usually still warm. It's dark brown and delicious -- and all dark meat, the way God intended.

This place sates when must have banh mi and nothing else can do! (just finished watching NomNom win Florence's GFT Race). Paying attn to the finer details, quality of baguette lacks. Too, the pickled veg are rather coarse and simple.
However, compositely, still has good taste, and the menu is surprisingly large for the store space. Lots of sides, to-go entrees, snacks, crisps, drinks, and Asan-style desserts!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Jung Min P.
El Cerrito, CA
I came here twice in one week, so think of this as two reviews in one post:
1st time:
+Excellent service.
When I first went, I just finished another day of school, it was raining, and I hadn't eaten all day. I needed shelter and food--badly. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was afraid it was closed because the door was only slightly open with a big CLOSED sign behind the glass door, and the manager was loading away stuff from his restaurant into his car. It was 6:15pm, the restaurant was supposed to be closed at 6:00, but the manager noticed me and took me in after I asked if it was still open. Props for that.
+Good portion and price.
I got the char sui pork banh mi (see picture), and I did not expect it to be so large. It must've been at least 6 inches, which is great, even though they seem to have raised the price (from what I saw in older pictures) to $3.00. I'm a big fan of Subway for how much sandwich they give for $5.00, so I was happy to see that the banh mi was competitive with "the foot long".
+Tasty
Simply put, the banh mi tasted great. It had nice, refreshing pickled veggies. The bread was warm, toasted, and neither chewy nor stale. I never was much of a fan of char sui, but I somehow got it anyways, and it was even good for my tastes.
Out of hunger, I also made a last minute grab for a side of plastic-wrapped fried chicken wings for $2.50 that lost all its texture (which was to be expected) from sitting out too long. It would've been nice if the wings were made to order too. I wished I could've spent $0.50 more and got another banh mi instead.
---------
2nd time:
Again, the service was excellent. I came in and ordered a beef pho and bbq pork banh mi (at least I thought I did). When my food came out, I was surprised to find two banh mi sandwiches and no pho, and soon realized that the pho (menu item #2) strangely shared the same number as the pork cake banh mi (also #2). But, the manager gave me no fuss, and promptly took one of the sandwiches and started making a bowl of pho after accepting the difference in price for the two items.
'Got the beef pho (see picture) for $6.50, and was glad that I did. The last pho I had was from Nong Thon, down the street, and I was still very bitter about the lack of meat, flavor, noodles in their pho. Since then, I've wanted to apologize to my stomach and taste buds for treating it such bad pho. Thankfully, the pho from Ba Le was just what I needed, and it was spot on in what I've come to know as good pho. After the first few bites, I knew that I would become a regular customer at this place. It was delicious, to say the least. The soup had that signature and wonderful tang and slight sweetness of good pho broth. There was also plenty of noodles and meat, so you'll always have some protein to chow on with your noodles throughout the meal.
I also got a bbq pork banh mi (see above for general banh mi description). I much preferred bbq pork to char sui. I'd get it again.
If I were to split this review for the two times I came here, it would average a 4.5 (4 for my first visit, and 5 for my 2nd), but I want to support this little mom and pop shop, so I'm just going to round it all up to a 5.
I will definitely be back a third time. -
Review from Patrick S.
Oakland, CA
They misheard me and gave me two BBQ chicken for lunch one day recently. It ended up being a good thing, I ate both. The sandwiches are the usual banh mi fare, though perhaps a little smaller that the norm. The cost is super low, so I can't really complain. Would revisit anytime I was close by.

Fast, cheap, and tasteful sandwiches. As grimy as it look, I really can't hate this place nor complain about anything rather than the lunch hour parking inconvenience. So by that being said, label yourself a cheapskate if you're mad about $3.

Review from Eileen L.

I was glad to see a Vietnamese sandwich shop in the area but I was disappointed because the Vietnamese sandwiches are one of the worst in the bay area . Their Vietnamese sandwiches lack flavor for some reason and I don't like their bread . The bread doesn't have any flavor to it at all . This little shop however , have a nice beverage selection which is why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 .

Review from Kevin T.
With all the GLOWING reviews on this place from several reliable sources I was expecting nothing less than a food-gasmic experience. So with high hopes and a fistful of cash I marched into the deli and was met with...
a WHOPPING meh experience.
Come on bay area, I KNOW you can do better than that.
Yeah they toasted up the bread to order, but the bread wasn't even fresh tasting! And I have to admit that the head cheese was on point, but the veggies looked like they had been sitting out on the counter all day.
Okay, I admit that I'm a bit more picky than I usually am, but I've had Banh Mi executed FLAWLESSLY at other parts of the Bay and I'm just keeping it real. -
Review from Taylor S.
San Leandro, CA
Give me Banh Mi and I am happy. Give me Banh Mi w/headcheese and I am ecstatic!
Definitely order the #1 Headcheese Ham, or #2 Combo Pork. The #7 Char Siu (bbq pork) seems to be popular every time I am there.
The place is a pretty good bang for your buck. Got the iced coffee w/condensed milk, not bad but not great. This place satisfies my cravings while working and gets me lunch and dinner for an average of $6 for 2 sandwiches. There are definitely better Banh Mi places in Oakland but this place holds its ground w/their sandwich selection. If you are in the Richmond/Albany/El Cerrito area hit this place up. -

It's OK, but nothing special in the banh mi universe. Bun is fresh but too big (bun/goodie ratio is way off). Stingy on meat. Light on menu choices.
Pluses are that they are fast, sandwiches are fresh, prices are the standard low ~$3.00 -

I am not sure if this is the samee owner as the one in oakland-international. but i came here cause it was closer to my house and i was craving for some viet sandwich. the price is slightly different from the one in oakland. they do not accept cards but the one in oakland does. i wish they had some more tables or chairs to eat. i end up eating it in my car, but still they make the sandwich fast which i like.

If there truly was a God Almighty, then why can't He grant me my tiny little wish of having Amanda Seyfriend and Megan Fox as my two concubines, and Ann Hathaway as my main wife? The Prince of Taiwan has prayed mightily to the heavens above, and still he does not have this small wish..damn you! but wait....He has seen how much i have suffered and has shown me the way to this holy place..where the banh mi is cheap, good, and made with care by a vietnamese dude who i know can probably kick my ass in thirty seconds or less.
I was in the area checking out the adult dvd store right next door (speaking which, this place apparently has go go dancers every friday night! win!)
Prices are insanely cheap, and the food is just very good. I had the combo and their cafe sua, and man let me tell you..their cafe sua is turbo charged! I felt like punching a shark after i drank that crack in a cup! -
Review from Karma B.

Great deal, $2.50 a sandwich and these are really good.
The pickled cucumbers, carrots, the sliced peppers, and the meat make a great combination of flavors. The bread is crunchy and flaky which I feel adds a nice contrast to the meat and veggies.
Definitely worth a stop by if you haven't had a Vietnamese sandwich before or if you're just in the mood for something different -
Review from Karen G.
Oakland, CA
Great deal for sandwiches and pre-packed to-go plates. Considering their price point, they do a great job at not compromising on quality.
Nothing really special about this establishment. It's a tiny, mom n' pop place that has one sit-in table and 2 outdoor tables. Mostly people come here for sandwiches if they live/work around the area. I happened to stop by b/c I was driving through San Pablo.
The bread rolls were a bit too crumbly/flaky for me. I usually like the bread to be crusty but not completely falling apart on the outside and more chewy on the inside. The ingredients were fresh. I agree w/ one of the previous reviews that the BBQ pork looked a little strange because it was shaped in the form of a patty or a cake. It was still good and full of peppery flavor which I liked but I would much rather have freshly seasoned grilled pork instead of a cutlet of mystery meat. It certainly tasted like pork but it definitely had a different taste to it.
Maybe these mystery meats is their hidden "ancient Vietnamese secret" to maintaining their low prices... lol.
Well If you find yourself pinching for pennies, $2.75 -3.50 for a traditional Viet sandwich is not too shabby.
I say: YES to cheap but filling sammies from Banh Mi Ba Le! ;-) -
Review from Kota T.
Richmond, CA
I recall being outraged that they raised their prices by 25 cents a sandwich several years ago. Then my wife kindly reminded me that it was a delicious sammy, still for under $3.00. I felt like quite the idiot.
Sketch location "sandwiched" between an adult video store and a nasty massage parlor. You see some real winners in this strip mall. However, the Banh Mi is awesome and so are their super fresh spring rolls with shrimp. I've been going there for years and it always "hits the spot". I love their #5 (meat ball - more like delicious ground meat consistency) and their #2. I reckon this joint is better than any Banh Mi place is Oakland China Town (where I first discovered Vietnamese sandwiches).
Oh, and the owner/sandwich maker guy is there everyday - working is a$$ off. Big props to this guy for his dedication and hard work - I think it is paying off with all of these top reviews. Good for you sir!
Go get a viet sammy - you will be a convert. -

I've had a lot of Vietnamese sandwiches, and I must say that this is the best place for them in the East Bay (besides their Oakland branch).
They generally do not skimp on ingredients and have all the bits that make a traditional banh mi. If you want more jalapeno, make sure you ask for it though because they will err on the non-spicy side.
It is not only consistently delicious, but the price is unbeatably cheap; it's competitive with the prices that you would find in Little Saigon in Santa Ana/Westminster, CA.
For a treat, efinitely try their Dat Biet (special) and Xa Xiu (BBQ pork). -

God what a great stop in El Cerrito. Excellent sandwhiches for dirt cheap prices. Everything on the menu with pork or chicken is delicious, although next time I go I plan to get ballsy and try the headcheese.
Watch yourself, the food can be a bit spicy at times, and it's cash only! So bring your bills! -

Had the #1 headcheese sandwich... I gotta say, I make a better sandwich. I agree with most reviews about the poor ratio of bread to yumminess. Also had the Bún bò Hue which was tasty, but it's not enough to entice me to return. There are too many other places that offer equally cheap sandwiches, but tastier sandos because these other places don't skimp on the ingredients.

Have been going here since the beginning when their bánh mì was insanely cheap. I think they were like a whopping $1.25
They are $2.50 now which makes me happy because it means that they did so well they were able to increase their prices. At $2.50 a sandwich it is still fantastically cheap and so very scrumptious.
My favorite bánh mì are the bbq pork, the bbq chicken and the vegetarian. I always ask for extra jalapenos on the side so I can spice mine up just right.
Another excellent dish of theirs is the Bún bò Hue. One of my all-time favorite soups. Not for the faint of heart or unadventurous types though.
Only thing to keep in mind is they are a cash only joint.
So what are you waiting for? Try a sandwich and delight your taste buds! -

I thought this place was related to the Banh Mi Ba Le in Oakland, but the difference in their banh mi is like night and day. This place has a screwed up filling-to-bread ratio. When I unwrapped my sandwich, all I saw was bread! The filling was in there somewhere, but there wasn't much of it. They're also stingy with the pate, which to me is the best part of banh mi.

Review from Dee H.
MMmmmmm love me some banh mi. This place is cheap (average $3 per) and makes delish vietnamese sandwiches. I'm a fan of their shredded pork, chicken, and BBQ pork sandwiches. Oh so tasty and fresh! It's a little hole-in-the-wall spot that is cash only, but it's family owned and the owners seem thankful for your business. I've also tried their pho and it's pretty decent! The broth is flavorful and they're not stingy with the meat. Their desserts in the fridge aren't too bad either. Last time I got their che and the one with coconut, bananas, and beans hit the spot. They also sell the most random snacks and drinks there. If you want cheap, fresh banh mi, that's not in the ghetto, this is the place to go!

Thank you yelpers for leading me to this amazing find! Hole in the wall cheap yummy places are the best stuff on Earth.
Literally just gulfed down a chashu sandwich and am soooooooooooooo happy I felt the urge to yelp it immediately. This sandwich was so good I can't even describe. All I know is I bit into it and the clouds parted to blue skies, yellow sun rays beamed down and everything was happy in the world. [Disclaimer: This is a dramatization, sandwiches can't change weather patterns or bring about world peace.]
The French roll was wondrously soft on the inside and crispy on the outside - just the way French rolls are supposed to be. For those of you who don't know this ultimate truth, Asians are kick ass at making bread. [Disclaimer: It's the truth if you don't agree then you have no taste buds! No disclaimer needed!!!]
Best part about this place is it is soooo cheap! I think tat's what made the sun beam and the world happy. Cheap & tasty can bring about world peace, no? We got two sandwiches, shrimp spring rolls and two juices for $12. Who could ask for anything more? -
Review from Jennifer W.
Berkeley, CA
I had the #2 ham & pork cake and David had the #8 bbq pork. The bbq pork looked a little odd because the pork looked like it was in the form of patties or cakes when I had briefly glanced at it, but I was reassured that it tasted good. The ham & pork cake was great and they did not skimp out on the pate. They will stuff your sandwich with all the necessary ingredients like cilantro, pickled carrot, pickled white carrot, and green peppers. Careful of those green peppers already tucked into the sandwich if you can't take the heat. They do not slice your sandwich in half.
Almost all sandwiches here are $2.50 and they also have other grocery items like shrimp chips and canned/bottled drinks. They have housemade dessert drinks too. There are also premade items like spring rolls and rices. I'd like to try their noodle soups one day because they look so, so good too.
They only have one table for four inside and two tables for a few people each outside. The line is constant. Service is fast.Listed in: Pho

My first Bahn Mi and it was very tasty. Fresh ingredients, tasty meat (I had the #9) and the sauce, whatever it was was a great creamy addition. The bread was really nice; fresh, crusty, and very light...does not weigh you down with lots of dough. Adds nicely to the sandwich. I also tried the papaya salad and, ehhhh, just okay. It was fresh and crunchy, but I can make better with a little effort. Wait staff was nice and very fast. Looks like the prices have gone up a bit to $3.00 per sandwich, but hey,a total of $8.00 for a good sized sandwich, a large papaya salad and a soda, that's a deal in my book.
Be aware, most of the sides at this place are plastic wrapped on styrofoam plates in a cold case. I'm not questioning their quality, it just took me by surprise a bit.
I got here just before noon on a Friday and there was no line and I sat outside no problem. As I ate though, I could see business pick up, though still no line.
Overall, great sandwich, I would definitely go back. -

Good, cheap, reasonably fast. That is all.
This place is as much as of a hole in the wall you get. I remember coming to their Oakland location as a kid. The El Cerrito location is just like the Oakland shop. I'm used to playing $5 or so for a banh mi out in Concord- this place is dirt cheap. Save yourself the BART trip to Oakland or the Tenderloin if you're in Contra Costa County - come here instead. You'll be impressed if you're an banh mi junkie. -

I went back there today for the first time in a long time and everything was just as good as I remembered, if not better! They seemed to have really added to their selection of non-sandwich items, such as noodle soups and other Vietnamese dishes.

I love this place! The sandwiches are yummy, filling, and suuuper cheap!
When I came here with my friend, I ordered the #1, ham and head cheese, and he ordered the #7 bbq pork sandwich. My sandwich was only $2.25 and his $2.50!!! So cheap :DD They gave us our sandwiches pretty fast and we sat down at the table to eat (but usually people take them to go). Our sandwiches were sooo good! The bread was toasted and stuffed with all the veggies and meat. There was also mayo and pate in mine. I only had a bite of the bbq pork one so I don't know what else was in there. After we finished eating, we went shopping at Pac East, then decided to come back and order even more sandwiches for our families to eat for dinner. The old guy that gave us our sandwiches looked SO HAPPY, he kept smiling at us and he was super nice (:
The place also has pho and other noodle soups but they're about $6 and I've never tried them here. It's full of asian snacks, drinks, and other premade Vietnamese stuff like spring rolls. I've gotten this green jelly desert thing (no idea what it's called) and it was too watery compared to the ones at other places. All the canned drinks are only $1 so we got a grass jelly drink and mangosteen.
Inside there is only one table that can fit four people and outside there are two tables. The parking lot is pretty small and when we got there it was full so we had to wait a minute for someone to leave.
This is my favorite place to get banh mi and everyone should definitely try it out! Just make sure you bring cash 'cause it's cash only. -

An El Cerrito local favorite. These are some of the best Vietnamese sandwiches I've ever had, and at $2.75 a sandwich whats not to love!? I recommend either the chicken or the pork, but there are more exotic options for the more courageous. Just make sure to look out for the hot peppers.

HANDS DOWN THE BEST VEIT SANDWICH I HAVE EVER EATEN! I have been coming here for 2 years now and I am NEVER disappointed.
You get an amazing sandwich with the meat, pickled veggie, veggie, and some type of spread they use on their AMAZINGLY crunchy bread.
ALL the sandwiches are under $2.50 and there is sooo many you can choose from. I usually get the number two which is the pork cake sandwich and a bottle of coke.
They also have rice plates served in a little rectangle sized styrofoam plate which is also great!
If you are in the area...YOU MUST TRY IT! At lunch time it is a bit busy but you still get your sandwich under 4 or 5 minutes.
and the old asian guy that takes orders sometimes is sooo adorable and always smiling! :) -

To celebrate the victory of the Egyptian people* I decided to go with the 200+ yelpers and try the Vietnamese sandwich here.
1 question: how can a sandwich have so much flavor & kick? Its terrific, I tried the #8 (bbq sandwich) and it was just yummy. The toasted bread with some delicious bbq pork and other condiments come together to produce an explosive taste (especially when you bite on the green chilli).
* On this day 02-11-2011 the Egyptian people after 18 days of persistent protests and one loud & clear message rejoiced in the resignation of their president (aka dictator) of 30 years. -
Review from Meena N.
I am SO GLAD I finally went to this place. I also love that it's in the east bay and that it's so cheap! Each sandwich is 2.50 and they're a good size. When I went me and my friends ordered a #1 which is ham and headcheese, a bbq pork and a bbq chicken bahn mi we also ordered a shrimp spring roll. Was not a fan of the BBQ pork when I usually am, but it may have been a off day for the pork. However, the BBQ chicken was booooooomb! The bread is perfect. The one thing they put in that's different is a cucumber slice but it adds a bit of moisture and some crunch into the mix. I like it.
The store is tiny- a 2 person table and some tables outside so if you're with a bunch of friends, just take it all to go. What's cool about this place is that they sell a bunch of cold Asian drinks like lychee or coconut or my favorite, soursop. They have a lot of pre-made vietnamese dishes so if you're not in the mood for bahn mi you can grab an already made rice plate to go. They also sell random vietnamese sweets and an assortment of other asian snacks. Love this place, can't wait to try more and give them some more business! -

OK Im a fan. Love the 8 & 9 sandwich ($2.50 each) and spring rolls for $3.50.
My only complaint (other than finding the place needed a clean-up every so often) would be the service. The guy who usually makes the sandwiches is efficient, but a smile now and again, and a sense of welcoming, would elevate the place in many peoples eyes, and might even make his work day a bit nicer a well.Listed in: Cheap Good Lunch in the East…

I was craving for some Banh Mi last Friday and I swore to myself not to give in and get a Banh Mi from this uber expensive Vietnamese place that charges $7.95 for a Banh Mi in LOS ALTOS. WTF?!
This past Saturday, I headed back to the east bay early afternoon. I wanted to swing by this place to finally fullfill my Banh Mi craving. Cost for a BBQ pork Banh Mi? $2.50. Take that Los Altos!
I must try their Pho here next time. I saw a lady that brought in her own pot and requested to have the Pho in the pot. That's awesome! -

What a great place!
They feature vietnamese sandwiches and a short list of noodle soups. You can get a bunch of different ready to eat lunches (such as the cold noodle salads, spring rolls, etc.). It's a hole in the wall worth a visit.
I had the #2 sandwich, combination. The french roll was crispy but not too crispy. Perfect bite in with lots to chew! I also ordered the spicy crab noodle soup which wasn't spicy but it was yummy! On top of that, the price is cheap! -

San Pablo, CA
One of the best sandwich spots in the entire Bay Area. Prices are not the cheapest but totally reasonable. I eat from here at least 1-2 times a week. The owner and sandwich maker is very accommodating to any request to the order. The other prices of food aside from sandwiches are kinda expensive, such as $3 for a bag of pork-reins that's normally sold for $1 elsewhere. That's the ONLY thing preventing this place from getting 5 stars is the hefty pricing of their 'other' products.
But hey this is a sandwich shop after all so as long as their pricing for the sandwiches doesn't go down, I'm ok with it.
