The best Thai I've had to date in the Fort Lauderdale area. I went for dinner just before closing, and the Thai mom and pop (and their kids) running the place were so gracious and happy to have us as their customers. They were curious how we found out about the place, and the chef (Noi, or the mom) personally gave us each a business card so that we could tell our friends.
And so I am here.
The menu is in fact *not* just the standard Thai fare, unless maybe you're only looking at the lunch special menu. But even then, there's the yellow crispy fried grouper in ginger garlic sauce, and the roast duck with a choice of 3 different sauces... It's not a place where you'd order the admittedly non-Thai tasting lad na, smothered in brown gravy.
Items ordered:
- Yaam Khai/Thai-Style Egg Salad: Crispy fried eggs tossed well with light sweet chili dressing, fresh bean sprouts, sweet onions, Thai herbs, and roasted peanuts.
- Ba Mee Moo Daeng: Seasoned egg noodles, roasted red pork and fish balls.
- Bangkok Duck: Deboned half Long Island Duck roasted then quickly fried; topped with your choice of sauce: basil sauce, ginger sauce, curry sauce, or sweet and sour sauce.
The duck was scrumptious. We were later informed (while the chef visited us at our table) that they make the duck from scratch and that they are really proud of it. We ordered it with the basil sauce, ordered hot.
The noodles had a gumminess I am fond of, although admittedly they were slightly overcooked. I would have loved more fish balls in it, but the flavor was on point.
The crispy egg salad was different, tart and sweet and spicy at the same time, and delicious. We were licking the plate trying to get every last bit of the viniagrette-type sauce.
Without even asking, they brought a spice rack to our table (with lots of sauces and types of peppers). This allowed me to really spice up the food the way I like it. I always go for one heat level below "Thai hot" when visiting a Thai restaurant for the first time so I can gauge how hot they prepare their food. I don't know why I do this every time in Florida because I know in the back of my mind that it won't be as hot as I'm expecting. Next time I'm ordering the food "Thai hot", or maybe I can have a heart-to-heart with the chef and see about adding the fresh sliced Thai peppers like they do in DC or Texas.
In summation, stick with the appetizers, salads, and house specials, and you won't be disappointed. They seem proud of their pad thai too if you must have it (although I've not tried it yet). I can't wait to try some of their plentiful seafood dishes and salads next time.
Went there for take-out today. Restaurant seems bright and friendly. Menu looks pretty standard. I had the Lad Na, and thought that it was not bad.
All in all, not good enough for me to crave, but good enough for me to stop by whenever I feel like getting Thai food.
