So the three of us drove all the way down to Bangkok Cuisine South last night only to discover they aren't open on Sunday!  We were dying for some spicy Thai food and a quick web surf and phone call on the iPhone confirmed that the original Bangkok Cuisine location on Mt Rose is open on Sunday night, so we put the pedal to the metal and beat it over there pronto.

First, be careful where you park when visiting Bangkok Cuisine!  Parking in the wrong lot will get you towed or booted with a $100 fine on top of it.  Second, if this Sunday dinner night was typical then get there early!  We arrived around 6:00 PM and didn't have any issue being seated quickly, but shortly thereafter the house was packed with almost every table occupied.

We had most of the same dishes as per my Bangkok Cuisine South review and they were equally on par in both taste and quality; stuffed chicken wings, satay, beef salad, some kind of pan fried fish patties, pud thai, and yellow (panang?) curry chicken..  However, this time we were able to order the Spicy (whole) Fish on this visit.  We're not sure what happened as we ordered it 5 Star spicy, but are Spicy Fish didn't live up to its name.  It was a nice size fish and was well prepared and tasty otherwise, but the Spicy Fish minus the spicy was a bit disappointing considering its market value price tag.

The coconut ice cream for dessert is great though.  It washes away all the spiced-up tingling tastebud overtones with luscious, creamy sweetness.  Our only other minor complaint is that the interior temperature was a bit on the high side for our visit.  Coupled with heavy doses of Thai spicy food this made for some perspiration and general discomfort at various points throughout the evening.  The service was very adequate at this location on this night.

It is ok if you know what is good...  For example, I'm not a fan of their curries, but I love their coconut soups, pad thai, and fried flatbread.

...Maybe I need to diversify, but what I really want is a good green curry when I go out for Thai food... and they let me down every time; it isn't even green... and it pales in comparison to the green curry found at the Thai Basil in Carson City - I mean come on - this is Reno and they don't come close.  =(  But I live down the street and come here for the soup and flat bread...  very good.

It is cute inside and suitable for a nice date or birthday dinner, in case that is why you've yelped the place.  If you MUST have a curry, I think their Panang is the closest they have to a good curry.  Green = disappointing.  Yellow = who eats yellow curry anyway?  Yellow curry tastes like Indian food or something... Not my thing.  Sorry, that was off the topic.

EDIT:  The very nice owner wrote me a note about my review and I think that is really cool and makes sense so I'm adding a star:

"Haley, thank you so much for the review! We totally appreciate your business and are very greatful that you have taken the time to give us a review. I'm sorry that you are not enjoying our style of curry. There are many variations of Thai curry depending on the region and of course the cook. The names green, red, and yellow don't signify the color of the curry but, the color of the chili in the curry. Therefore, the curries don't neccessarily come out looking green, red or yellow. I'm not sure how Thai Basil is preparing their curries but, I hear it is a great place! If we can keep you coming for our cocnut soup, Pud thai and flatbread then that makes us happy and extremely thankful! Please visit again soon!"  - Kris (owner)

I first went here I think back in 2005 after a snowboarding trip and a friend (who eats at a lot of restaurants) recommended this place. I remember being a little disappointed in portion sizes though for the price. (Although I've since discovered that I think Thai is pretty expensive in general, compared to say, Chinese) I was told after this time period that a lot of people get food poisening there I guess. I have gotten sick before but it has only been when I left the food out for 4 hours (with seafood) -- Hope that doesnt scare anyone off... I still eat here at least once every few weeks!

Cut to around 2007/2008 after being a loyal customer to Thai Chile I decided to try Bangkok again after many inconsistant meals at Thai Chile. I think Bangkok's pad thai is about 50 cents more than Thai Chile but I feel like the ingredients are fresher and the dish is overall better. I love the tofu (and I normally hate tofu) and the shrimp almost always tastes fresh (although sometimes I will say a bit overcooked). I feel like the noodles actually soak up the sauce (so its not just noodles) and the spices are perfec as well as cooked and uncooked bean sprouts (Yum)t. The other dish I always get at Bangkok is the Hot and Sour soup, I switch it up between the Chicken and the Vegetable only because sometimes the chicken gets dry in the soup after a day (Experienced at both Thai Chile and Bangkok). As for prices I think pud thai is $9 or $10 and the soup varies between $7 and $9 for a large. Also they have a delicious sweet dipping sauce for their wontons and fried spring rolls (cheap). I almost always get my orders to-go though and two most recent times I ate inside, the first was later in the evening and it was pretty busy and the service was not spectacular, but the next time I went in early evening about the same as far as business but the service was excellent. I do wish their Basil Noodle had baby corns and straw mushrooms (like Thai Chile) but I just go to Thai Chile if thats what I want.
The decor is pretty neat, especially the first room, and authentic I suppose and I've noticed it has gotten cleaner. I have noticed too though that cushions on the bench in the lobby/front desk area could be washed more (Ive seen some gunks and stains on them before). But they've introduce daily lunch specials and always have mints. Granted not always perfect it is one of the most consistant places to eat in my opinion.

Tonight my mom (from out of town) got the wonton soup which she didnt like, she didnt give me a chance to taste it though (I think though that she was thinking it would be a more Chinese wonton, this had baby corns and mushrooms etc) and she also got fried wontons. I thought they were good, granted not packed with filling we still got 10 of them.

This is probably a weird review but I still love this place. I think that they are relatively miid in spicyness unless you remember to tell them, I know at Thai Chile my mouth is always burning (which can and can not be a good thing)

My family and I have eaten at this restaurant soooo many times over the past few years, and we always leave stuffed and happy. AMAZING service, delicious food, and it's not that expensive.  About $50 feeds 4 adults with plenty of leftovers. Their pud thai and coconut soup is perfect, excellent mixture of spices, never over-powering.  Two other Thai food places I've tried (Taste of Thai, Thai Chili) had nothing on Bangkok Cuisine. I've tried all but a few dishes on the menu, and my only issue occured about 2 years ago when I unknowingly ordered a very spicy dish. Luckily, my waiter came right back and brought me the same dish in a less spicy version, without any charge. I wish I could remember the name of the dish to warn anyone else who doesn't read menus very carefully haha.
I'm getting hungry writing this, so my last words of advice are: Highly recommended! Stop reading this and go eat there now.

Some times the original is the best. Now that Bangkok has 3 location I don't make it to the original as often. But when I do the food is still amazing. I'm not sure if the pan's and fryers are seasoned from years of cooking but the Curry Pops seemed to have a better flavor here. My favorite is the Chicken Panang Curry with the Black and Pepper Chicken a close second. The Thai food is authentic and great quality.

Place is a bit over rated in my opinion by the local papers like RGJ. Maybe that is because they have been here awhile and are well established in the community and the papers are just rehashing old reviews? I have eaten here and at Bangkok Express their sister restaurant which has only a few menu items missing and is as good.
Both places are ok nothing super great. The service is fast and friendly at Express.....not so much at their main restaurant. I like Express for their quick lunch convenience, they aren't for a dinner party though. The main restaurant is better for a dinner party outing.
Food is equally good at both.

I guess I don't get it. I don't want to pay this much for the crappy service, crowded eating conditions, and difficult selection.

Yes, I am vegan. Yes, you have tofu. You have Thai Yellow Curry but it only comes with steak or chicken? Why can't I have tofu?

Okay, okay, so you have this sizzling dish that combines peanut sauce and yellow curry - but what if I don't WANT that? And what if I don't want to pay $12 for it?

Please refill my water.

Please don't sit me so close to another table when there are so many other spots available.

Please lower your prices.

That being said, the food is good. It's not the BEST THAI EVER OMG but it's good. They have these (overpriced) basket appetizer things that are straight-up amazing, but two chomps and you're out $6. No thanks.

The atmosphere isn't much, either. I liken it to a doctor's office with framed photos of royalty.

Pretty slow service, but the food is GREAT! The cocktails aren't anything to be trifled with either, plenty strong and great tasting. Went there last week with 6 other people and I didn't hear a single complaint among a variety of dishes. Mine was delicious.

If they picked up the pace of the service a bit this would easily be 4 stars.

Love this place.  Good food, nice decor, reasonable prices.  I go here when I take a long lunch, or for dinner.  They put a lot of attention into the decor, which is nice.  But the food is why I come back.  The jasmine tea is nice, and every dish I've ordered is well-prepared -- fresh ingredients and tastes great.  Wait staff are friendly and timely.  I'll go here again and again, recommend it to friends, and take visitors from out of town to eat here.

Bangkok is so great, I have never been disappointed.  I've had many of their dishes, and pad Thai is always my favorite.  The flavors and peanut sauce in that bad boy are awesome.  It's also a great place to go if you're a vegetarian, great diversity within the menu.  It's also a good sit down restaurant, wonderful relaxing environment and deco.  The price isn't gonna kill you, either.  Hands down one of my favorite places in Reno.  I saw a promo on their new location off of S. Virginia, and that location looks absolutely gorgeous!

We were in Reno for a weekend and were in the mood for some Thai food.  I found Bangkok Cuisine on Yelp and based on the reviews we decided to give it a try. After being seated the waiter didn;t return for a good 15 minutes to take our order - we ordered Tom-Kha soup along with entrees of  chicken and a tofu curry.

The soup arrived in a bizarre bowl that was shaped like a bunt cake container pan. The ladle didn't even fit into the bowl making it very difficult to pour the soup into our bowls. Our entrees were yummy.  When we were finished the waiter cleared our table and we asked for the check  he didn't come back for another 15 minutes.

All in all the food was good but the service was terrible - next time I'll go back to Reno I'll be eating somewhere else

This is my favorite place in Reno to eat Thai. It's got a great location, very central to downtown and near a great bar (The Chapel Tavern, just don't park in their parking lot).

I recommend the sizzling platter, bean thread noodles and black pepper and garlic entrees. I always order with fried tofu because I'm a vegetarian but I'm sure their great with chicken, beef or seafood.

The service is ALWAYS fantastic, the atmosphere is great and the prices aren't too steep. It's a great place to go with a group of friends and share different entrees.

This is still our favorite Thai Restaurant.  Beautiful decor and relaxed ambiance. Fresh ingredients and friendly staff.

Favorites:

~Shrimp sizzling plate.  Fresh spinach, coconut milk, shrimp, and peanut sauce.  It is a party in your mouth.
~Pud Thai.  The best in Reno.
~Fried bananas with ice cream.  We always make room for this.

Tips:

~They DO accept American Express. :-)
~Parking is not ideal.  You have to go through an alley to park.
~They serve brown rice.  (Extra $3)
~You can request extra scoop of ice cream. ($2.50)
~Service is always prompt.
~Get there early or make a reservation as they are busy for dinner.

So we decided to give the place another try and try some different things on the menu. The chicken satay was the best I have ever had. I'm usually not a fan of this dish but the BF wanted to get it. The pieces on th skewer were the most plump I have ever had, lot of places they are kinda like dried jerkey on a stick! One unusual thing is its served with a flaming little grill thing. I guess one is suppose to BBQ the meat on the stick over this thing. I'm not quite sure I want to put meat I'm gonna eat over a blue sterno type flame. We pass on that part a enjoyed them as is. The panang curry was very nice and the service was just fine. I'm not sure what others are complaing about with the service, but hey anybody can have an off night. So now we have an alternative place to go for Thai, and its the only place thats open on Sun.

Being new to the area we tried this as something different. I had the peppered salmon, and it was delicious. I had asked to have no onion but it came on it anyway. No problem I have to pick it off of everything.

Overall we really enjoyed our experience easting here and plan to visit again. Monday nights have become our night to dine out because everyone else is home watching football.

Thanks to the reccomendation from Catherine S on 'Yelp' we found a really nice special place to eat.

I have not found anything exceptional about Bangkok Cuisine.  The service is frequently slow, the last time we ate there we were brought the wrong food and despite mentioning it to the waiter twice, he did not seem to understand that when one is served the wrong food, they expect something to be done about it.  The pad thai is average, the meat entrees are a little skimpy, but the place is reliably 'ok'

Possibly the best Thai food in Reno?

I finally got a chance to try the BF's favorite Thai restaurant in Reno. It's not just his favorite, but all of his Reno buddies' favorite too!  It was super busy on this Friday night, reservations were a must for our party of 7.  I was surprised seeing so many people waiting to be seated, coming from all walks of life too!

Everyone had their favorites, so this is what we ordered:

* Papaya Salad ($7.95) "Tossed together shredded green papaya, tomatoes, green beans, hot chili peppers, garlic, ground peanuts, cooked shrimp.  Served with deep fried beef strips and sticky rice." - Light dish, but adds some heaviness with the beef.  I particularly enjoyed the sticky rice that came with it.

* Chicken Laub ($6.95) "Your choice of beef, pork, or chicken mixed with pepper onions, scallions, cilantro, mint leaves and lime juice served with a wedge of crisp lettuce leaves." - My favorite out of the group.  It's a messy thing when you fill up your lettuce cup, but the tanginess from the lime juice makes it oh so good!

* Pud Thai ($8.95) "Thai noodles stir fried with shrimp, chicken, deep fried tofu, egg, ground peanuts, bean sprouts, and scallions." - Pretty standard pad thai.

* Duck Curry ($10.95) "Roasted duck cooked with Thai eggplant, pineapples, tomatoes, bell peppers, basil leaves, and a mild curry mixed with coconut milk." - The group had to get two orders of this stuff.  The curry tastes really good when you dump it all over your white rice.

* Stuffed Thai Omelet ($8.50) "Special omelet stuffed with your choice of ground beef, pork, or chicken, green peas, carrots, onions, and scallions." - It's a stuffed omelet, pretty simple.

All the food was easily devoured by our table of five guys and two girls.  No leftovers at all.  I think we probably could have thrown in another dish with these heavy hitters!

And of course, Thai iced tea ($2.25) all around!

I thought this Thai place was great, and so did my husband and his family. We ordered an appetizer and 6 main dishes and they were all very good, my favorite was the green papaya salad, it was just the right level of spiciness. For all of those people who are saying 'it's fine for Reno but it would never cut it in a bigger city', let me tell you that I live in the East Bay and I've had some pretty average Thai from places that seem to be busy. Bangkok Thai has fresh tasty food for reasonable prices, for a party of 5 the bill came to about $85 and there were left overs for lunch the next day.

I'm spoiled by having access to a variety of cuisines here in Boston, but I rather liked Bangkok Cuisine.  A friend and her husband brought me here when I was visiting from out of town and I loved it!  I keep bugging my mom to come here and get down with some good Thai food (she loves the stuff) but I might have to drag her myself next time I'm in town.

I haven't eaten at Taste of Thai, but if this place stacks up with my beloved Bangkok City in Boston, I think it's worth the four stars.

I visited Bangkok Cuisine weekly for nearly a year. I'm bummed that my work schedule doesn't allow me the same flexibility any more. My favorite server is Kong - I hope I don't spell his name wrong! We always get excellent service - to the point they recognize us and what we regularly order. When we're rushed at lunch, it is never a problem to say "we have to be back to the office in 40 minutes"

First off, let's just say that I like this restaurant...it has good Thai food and great, authentically Thai atmosphere (thus the 4 stars).  That said, I do not think that the food is so great that it surpasses all other Thai food in Reno.  Bangkok is decent Thai food dressed up in lots of hype.  There are plenty of Thai restaurants in Reno that are just as tasty, and some are cheaper.  I do not feel a deep sense of loyalty to Bangkok Thai--Thai Royal House used to be, in my opinion, the best Thai food in Reno, but sadly, they are now closed.

One major drawback is the service.  I have never had really good service here, which is more annoying in a Thai food restaurant, as most other Thai places in town are actually run by Thais and offer famous Thai-style friendliness.

As I said, the food here is good, but no better than you would find at any more casual Thai place...it is, however, more expensive.  They just added fresh spring rolls to the menu, which are really excellent, better even than Golden Flower.  Their Panang Curry is great, and their Pad Thai scrumptious.  I find the Tom Ka Gai to be somewhat lacking, though.

Bangkok Cuisine is definitely worth a visit, just don't buy into all of the rave reviews as this being one of the best restaurants in Reno...it isn't.

First date I took from my boyfriend was here, and I have never tried thai before. Now it lives in a good high place above others, not because it is a good memory but because the food is actually better.

The Tom Ka Gai is excellent, lots of filling, and your choice of spice.
Pad Thai comes on a medium sized platter, not oversoaked in peanut sauce.  Any of the curries are excellent, taste homemade.
Don't forget your Thai Iced Tea!

The waitresses dress in geisha attire, which I thought was pretty. The room is perfect for a romantic setting.  Not too bright, and seems relaxed and not too loud either.

There are more Thai restaurants in Reno now, but for a long time, Bangkok Cuisine was the one and only (or at least, the one that everyone went to).  As a result, even though there are more options now, I'm still faithful to Bangkok for reliably good food and service.

The place has nicer decor than you might expect - cloth napkins and layered tablecloths, and carved wooden screens dividing the room.  There are also cheesy Thailand travel posters, sure, but you won't be noticing those once the food comes.

I always get a side of the cucumber salad, which is crispy, sweet, and salty in just the right way.  The Golden Basket veggie appetizer is also excellent, as is the chicken satay.  They have tasty curries ranging from mild to spicy, and the kitchen can dial up the spiciness if you want, but I usually stick with my favorite pad thai (which is good, though not outstanding, here).  The entrees range from $10--15, but most are about $12.

The dessert selection isn't huge, but they have some fun and unusual things, like mangoes and sticky rice (yummy!).  Usually, though, you'll be so full from their huge portions that dessert won't even be an option.

Still going after all these years, Bangkok Cuisine isn't flashy or especially hip, but delivers good, reasonably priced Thai food for girls' night out or a low-key date.

My significant other and I have tried six thai places in Reno and this is by far our favorite.  We tend to order the same items each time we have dinner at Bankok Thai, as our dishes always remain consistent and we enjoy them too much to branch out.  However, when we have had dinner with friends, I have tried their meals and they were delicious as well.  I always order the Pad See-ew, wide rice noodles with tofu (you can substitute chicken or pork) and broccoli, and my boyfriend orders the famous Pad Thai with chicken.  Sometimes we also order the fresh spring rolls and egg fried rice with chicken.  The food is always consistent in its taste.  The thai flavors are very authentic which is why we like Bankok Thai so much, it tastes like true thai food.  You can make your meal more spicy by adding 1-5 stars when you order your meal.  We have also ordered our dishes for take out, and even after the 20 minute drive home, the food still tastes just as good, and is still warm.  Whether you are eating in the restauarant or at home, I highly recommend Bankok Thai to fulfill your Thai food craving.

Best Thai food in Reno! My finace and I have been going here for 4 years and frequent Bangkok at least once a week. The waiters remember our order every time. I highly recommend the Spicy Basil Noodle. The Roti (Thai Flatbread) is a must. I don't see enough people ordering this, it is buttery, flaky goodness.

For dinner, if you show up on a weekday between 4-5pm it will be less crowded. The later hours during the week can be BUSY BUSY.

Amazing place!

It's difficult to write a review when you have only eaten at a place once, but it's likely that we won't return to a place a second time if we had a bad experience the first. So, I assumed Bangkok would be much better since it has received many good reviews. I found the service to be disappointing and one dish to be bad--spicy green beans. When the beans were sent back (due to their being nearly raw), the server returned with beans that were overcooked, and a red curry sauce that had since coagulated. Disappointing.

The food is good, but definately not the best in Reno.  Try a Taste of Thai for good food and better prices.  However, this place was my husbands favorite.  It is constantly good food, and the service is the same.  They have lunch specials that allow you to try 2 different items on the menu.  Their Thai Coffee is good too !

If you like your wide rice noodles to look like they were chewed up then spit out by a toddler, then you, my friend, have found Thai Food Mecca at Bangkok Cuisine.

The food here is simply amazing.  The service is consistently great, and the food is consistently great.  The ambiance is nice.  I love it here.

we've been here once or twice in 2003 courtesy of my friends here in reno. very recently, we had a good dinner where we had a coconut based seafood soup dish, padthai, & a sizzling pork platter with peanut sauce.  the service was great, which says a lot about how the owners treat their employees.  the restaurant's full of customers, on an early Sunday evening at that!

after a long cold crazy day of snowboarding, i need a spicy hot meal in a cozy atmosphere.  this is the only thai restaurant that i like to go to in reno.  its really decorated nicely with thai furnishing...even those triangle pillows in the entrance area.  it is a small quaint place and very cozy.  i recommend making reservations if you have a big party.  ive been going to this place for almost 10years now and i havent been disappointed.
i always recommend the spicy sweet and sour papaya salad.  take some shredded papaya thats been mixed with hot pepper, fish sauce, and peanuts, take a dab of sweet rice and have it wrapped around a piece of cabbage.  the chicken wings stuffed w/ground beef and dipped in a spicy sweet chili sauce is always good.  the main reason why my buddies and i go here is for the duck curry, which ive yet to find anywhere else.  we like to order 2, sometimes 3 orders of duck curry.  yeah, its that good.  gawd, i think we push the limits of our stomachs to fill it more with duck curry.    imagine slurping up a spoonful of a piece of duck breast meat w/ skin swimming in a pool of fragrant curry spices, creamy coconut milk, and hot peppers.  delicious...
