Love it here. Always start off with some roti prata - just don't fill yourself up too much on it. Entree favorites are the rendang beef, mango chicken or prawns, and any of the curries. For dessert, the deep fried banana ala mode always hits the spot. They have a pretty big menu - I'll be back to try more dishes...

Times that we've gone bar seats have always been up for grabs, but the wait for regular tables can be a bit long.

Yeah yeah, roti prata was awesome. But thats about it! Sigh, for such a nice place with decent food, their service definitely sucks.

I mean, I asked for a table of 4, she goes oh are they here yet? I said almost, then she goes ok well we can't seat you, tell me when they are because we only have a few left and everyone needs to be here. I walk away awkwardly and say ok. I found it rude how she was condescending and non-inviting. EH whatever.

We ordered Roti Prata (very good) and I had the... Chow... something. It's under Pad Thai on the lunch menu. It was very good I must say, however our waiter was non existent. Although this place does serve great food, their waiters need to step up their service game.

This was one of the first restaurant's reviews I had read, when I first started dabbling on Yelp.  Over a year and a half later, I had finally stumbled onto this place and all that I had read about, materialized in front of me in an hours time one late summer's night dinner.

9 o clock as the sun had just set, the restaurant was still packed and bustling.  We were greeted by an overtly gregarious host who assured us there was a table open while he was patting us on our shoulders.  Strange violation of private space I thought, but just assumed he was an owner, drunk with the fact that he had a gold mine on his hands and probably did not see us as people but as dollar figures entering the building.

The best way I can describe my first impression of the place is:  a well orchestrated chaotic circus.  A large open kitchen sits in the center of the restaurant, as cooks multi-tasks within the flames of the wok station.  A massive crew on the floor weaves through the tightly knitted tables catering to the guests' needs, not once to my amazement, dropping anything or running into one another.  The walkways are tight and narrow, and if someone were say over 200 hundred pounds, they'd have a hard time getting in some of the tables.

There are enough reviews here to not go into detail on what we had for food, cuz everybody else already did it.  But all I got to say is that it is pretty much worth the hype, when it comes down to casual entertainment for a reasonable price.  Yes, you will find better renditions of most of their dishes here, probably in more of traditional settings, but what this place brings to the table is bringing the multi-ethnicities of Asia to one package.  You can have an Indian appetizer then move to a Thai Noodle dish and an Indonesian fish stew and wash it all down with a Sapporo Lager.

Everything I've had here is sauced heavily and boldly.  The good thing is they do a damn good job at these sauces.  They're quite legit and deep in flavors, but they just smother the main stars whether it be fish, chicken or beef.  Some of the sauces are so bold that they could probably julienne some shoe leather douse in that sauce and serve it on a sizzling platter and most would probably rave about it.

If you work in the South bay, you will know of this place, and if you don't you can get a good taste of what Silicon Valley taste like:  a multi-ethnic mélange of flavors.  The crowd is as diverse as the menu, and to me, that's a good thang.

the food is good here, never get tired of coming here. also a big plus is that it is dog friendly. The staff are excited about the dog and allow you to seat in the outdoor dining area without a fuss. that's why they get 5 stars!

I've been to this restaurant during their notorious lunch run.  Rule #1 of Banana Leaf is never talk about Banana Leaf.  Seems like nobody knows that rule because the place is always friggin' packed!  We had an 11.45 reservation for 12 and part of our party showed up about 10 minutes late, but by then, the host already gave away our table and gave us the 'You gotta show up at 11.45 on the dot or you're assed out.' speech.  Duly noted.

So 15 minutes after that, we're able to get a crowded table and time to eat.  The staff is pretty frantic and kinda pushy (probably because it's the lunch time rush) and they quasi-jedi-mind trick us into ordering 6 roti pratas.  It's some indonesian type bread with curry sauce.  quite tasty.  For lunch, I had the red curry prawns.  It wasn't as flavorful as some red curries that I've had in good Thai restaurants.  They also filled that bad boy up with way too much big ass okra to make the bowl look full.  Desert was fried bananas and mango ice cream.  I didn't partake, but the co-workers said it was good.

In all, Food was a 3.5 (the roti prata was definitely good), service was a 2.5 so overall, it's a 3.  The best advice I'll give is to get yo' ass there on time if you have a reservation!

Dinner is always crowded, so go with that in mind. I love the variety here. It's great to go with a group so you can try more items. I always go for the roti prata to start.

My other favorites are: Rendang Beef, Hainan Chicken and Indian Mee Goreng. The oatmeal battered battered jumbo prawns are very different, try them!

I start this review off with a disclaimer that I'm not a fan of Thai/Malaysian/Singaporean food, but I came here for a friend's birthday because she enjoys it.

Three of us came here for a weekday lunch, around 12:10 or so.  It was really packed and the line was very long... we waited for about 15-20 minutes before getting seated outside.  The hostess was pretty rude, but she was visibly stressed out, so I can kinda understand.  Our server however, was nice and attentive.  I got the pad thai lunch combo, mild spicy, it was pretty meh, I didn't finish it.  It came with like 2 shrimp, some bits of chicken and squid, and a small salad side.  Decent for like $8... however the spring rolls were pretty underwhelming for $8.

Very ehhh experience (my 3rd time there I think).  Would not come of my own accord, only if other people insist.

I had to go back and reduce my rating one star. The woman ordered a nice shrimp dish that looked and smelled wonderful; however, when she, and then I, tasted it, we unfortunately discovered the shrimp was a little rotten. We informed the waiter who got the manager. However, instead of apologizing and removing it from our bill, he tasted it and informed us that is "how it is suppose to taste." I am from New Jersey...I grew up on shell fish. I know what shrimp is "suppose to taste" like. I was quite perturbed. After some mild arguing, the manager agreed to remove the cost from our bill, but for the "quality" of the restaurant, there should have been no argument in my opinion. Thus, minus one star. They are still good, but we will likely frequent then less now.

BEST DISH: Asaim Jumbo Prawns (Still)

I have heard of this place quite a few times from friends and finally tried it this last weekend.

Group of 3 and we ate:
We had Roti Prata 2 pieces - our pieces were over cooked almost burnt. But eh... its ok I was really hungry.

Tai Pou Chicken - Is this the Malaysian version of Sweet and Sour Chicken?  I wasn't turned off by it like I am Chinese sweet and sour sauces but I think that there could have been more spice.

Kangkung & Calamari - So I wanted something that I never had before.  And when I ordered it the waitress said, "Do you know that its boiled squid and Kangkung," 'No I said, 'is it good?"  "Well I like it" she said.  "Great then I want to try it"   It wasn't bad at all.  The veggie and sauce were the best part, but the squid wasn't fishy, however a few pieces were overcooked.

Pahd Thai - Not as good as other places I have had it.  It wasn't the worst however.

The waitress was super good, the bus staff always filled the water and took away empty dishes.  It was somewhere I would go again, but dint see myself running to satisfy a craving.

I know people rave about this place but I'm sad to just give it an okay. Malaysian food is my favorite but unfortunately, although this place had a line outside as usual, I didn't think the food was worth the line. Food was very oily, saucy and mushy.

We ordered:

Roti Prata- can't really go wrong with this.
Penang Sizzling Chicken- so disappointed with this dish. It was chicken soaked in sauce that was just creamy and bland.
Melaka White Pomfret - thought this was going to be a to die for dish, especially since it was fried! Unfortunately nothing close to amazing. Could have went home and fried some tilapia instead and put some chili sauce on top.

I don't think my visit here is at all a representation on how good this place really could be. Obviously everyone else raves about it PLUS the table next to us were chowin down with some good old crab that looked delicious. Will definately go back again and try other dishes. For now, just an okay...I hope to up the stars when I go back.

YUM! The husband and I have been going to Banana Leaf for years and there is always a wait. The food is extremely good. Favorite dishes include: roti prata, mango chicken, malay sizzling beef and pineapple fried rice. I actually think they have the best pineapple fried rice in the bay.

Food is excellent here and the service is always good when you dine in the restaurant. The waiters always come back to check on you and the food is always fresh.

My only negative experience I've experienced is the take out especially around lunch (11:30am - weekdays). They always tell you 15 minutes but when you get there the food is never ready. Also, the female hostess at the front can be rude at times and ignore you when you do take out.

This place is darn consistent.. Every time I come back to eat here, so it be it's been like one year or a couple of months , the food tastes the same every time... and it's good...consistently good food.. I always order the seafood fried rice, or pineapple fried rice.  The beef rendang is good also tasty but it's not too spicey.. The appetizer roti prata is delicious, and you can totally taste the coconut.  If you are on a calories fest- then also order the coconut infused rice.. it's so damn buttery and fatty, melting in your mouth the tasty dishes that accompanying it.  They make really good lychee martinis as well.. and I love myself a yummy Lychee martini!

Maybe my expectations were really high... i've heard so much good stuff about this place.  I went, there were a lot of people and there was a good wait (not long, but a good amount of time).  The food was good, but that's it.  Not great.  I've had just as good (sometimes better).

If you're in the area, and it's not the lunch/dinner rush, you should try.  But not worth the wait and the crowds.

Some decent reviews here.  If you have a more flexible schedule, like me, drop in after the main lunch crowd leaves.  I needed a book and to do some high end shopping at Ross, so I was in the hood.

The Roti was great!  As mentioned before, the pad thai seemed like the noodles were overcooked and the sauce a touch too tomatoey. And the beef curry was good but not fantastic.  Still, I get a steady stream of vietnamese cooking these days so anything different is a pleasure.

Service was good and friendly.

We'll be back.

This place is a little too hyped up for me.

This is probably one of the most popular places in Milpitas. It is always, always, always crowded. The wait is pretty long and even with reservations, we had to wait 15 mins one time.

If its just for the Roti alone, I would give this place 5 stars. Theirs is always warm and with a nice toasty appearance and texture. Also, their sauce is so good!

The other foods are a little disappointing tho. The red curry chicken is a little on the watery side as oppose to the richer, more full-bodied sauces of other curries I tried. Also, theirs has a lot of cauliflower, a lot. Dont get me wrong, I like cauliflower, but I would have like other stuff too like the chicken, the okra, pumkin/squash and other veggies but most of the space in the bowl was occupied by the cauliflower that the was only little room for the other stuff.

Their pad thai was also not to my liking. It was very red...like spaghetti red. Their noodles are also thick noodles. It was pretty spicy; actually a lot spicy--like a burning your tongue type. Some heat is nice but its hard to taste the food when it is way too spicy.

On the bright side, they do have some good stuff too. I like their pineapple fried rice. The satay chicken comes with some really good peanut sauce. I also like this one noodle they have which I cant remember the name of, but its rice noodles with eggs and seafood. That one is pretty good stuff.

The place is a little pricey since their servings are smaller than most Thai restaurants I've been to. It might be a good place for a date if you can find a time that is not so crowded.

This is one of those places that I need to delve more into the menu.  My wife and I usually just get the Roti Prati (man that curry dipping sauce is righteous!) and the Pulut Hitam (black rice in coconut milk).  I could eat that stuff forever, but their merely appetizers.  I have had the 'Banana Leaf Chicken' once and it was good too.  Also, the pineapple rice is nice.  The main downside here is that it is a little too pricey for my taste.  Strange thing is, I've always gotten our food to go here; I've actually never eaten inside.  Sometime when we aren't with the kids, maybe we will....

Been here a countless number of times with coworkers.  As you drive into the parking lot near the restaurant around lunch time, you'll always see a huge crowd waiting outside and spilling out onto the street, waiting to get in.  Very popular place, if you have a large party, better make reservations.  I've brought out of town coworkers here for lunch, and they enjoyed almost everything here.

With regards to the food, its probably one of the better choices for restaurants in McCarthy Ranch.  We usually order family style so everyone can try out all the dishes.  Most of my guests like the roti prata.  Servers will always push desserts.

Very crowded inside, sometimes feel rushed so they can turnover the table.  They have outdoor seating, but not sure how comfortable it is with the people waiting to get in looking over your shoulder.  I guess part of the experience.

I haven't come out to this place as frequently the past few years but have tried this place on and off during the past dozen years.

The wifee and I are slightly at odds about this place where I seem to like this place more than she does.  She says that she feels the food here is little bit more pricier than other places (I agree) but flavor authenticity is good she says.

Would recommend trying the lunch specials where you can save a few dollars and comes with the soup of the day and rice M-F 11am-3pm.

We ordered:
*  The Gado-Gado for appetizer (an assorted vegetables, fried prawn cake and tofu w/chef peanut sauce) $6.95.
*  Asam White Pomfret (w/hot and sour tamarind sauce) $13.95.
*  The Belachan Eggplant veggie plate (w/Malay special shrimp paste sauce) $7.95.
*  The Rendang Beef (w/chef's special Malay curry sauce) $9.50.
*  Chow Kueh Teow (stir-fried rice noodles w/prawns, squids, eggs and bean sprouts) $8.50.
*  We also ordered steam and Hainan Seasoned Rice.

We came here tonight to celebrate Father's Day (this place is closed on Sundays) and there always seem to be a wait here.  May recommend getting here a little early for any meals (we got here around six and had about a five minute wait).  You can make reservations ahead of time but keep in mind also that gratuity is calculated into groups of six or more here.

Another one of those local places I'd recommend to anyone in the mood for a tasty Asian meal. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant owner would give us on the house desserts every once in a while, thanking us for our patronage. Cool, huh! It gets crowded (because it's that good!) so it would be wise to get there a bit earlier than you plan to eat, especially when you go in a big group. I would always be full and satisfied with whatever I get here. Try it!

place it too noisy with crowd
huge waiting time (don't understand why people like this place) not sure what is special here
Less quantity for the price you pay
worst okra curry. same for chicken.

only thing we like here is Roti paratha with spicy sauce.

I have lost count of how many times I have eaten at Banana Leaf - and I don't even live in the area. This is definitely one of my ATF regular restaurants - period. All of my friends (ok, make that most) who I have taken to BL have gone back on their own. The major selling point is their Roti Prata. We always start with one or two to share. We always order one per person the next time we go back. The other favorites are: Gado Gado, Beef Rendang, Malay Sizzling Chicken, Fish Head Curry, Chili Crab, Asam Laksa, Prawn Mee, Mee Goreng, Nasi Goreng, etc. I am sure all the dishes are great - it is just that I keep gravitating back to the few.

I want to give this a 3.5 but I'm just going to round up to 4.

Since I came here at 2 pm, there was absolutely no wait, yet lunch special pricing goes till 3 (most dishes around $7-8).

I got Siam Prawns, 3 people got Siam Salmon, and one got Chow Kueh Teow (chow fun basically). Here's a direct link to the lunch menu if you want to take a look: http://www.bananaleaf-...

We also got Roti Prata, "multi-layered home made Indian bread dipped in curry sauce" as an appetizer. This in itself deserves 5 stars. I loved it so much I forgot to take a picture of it! =P

The main dishes we had were alright overall. The prawns were deliciously squishy (I really need to find a better way to describe that), but the sauce was a bit on the too-sweet side. I normally love mangos, but the mangos were alright. A little too raw for me? I'm not a big salmon fan, so the salmon was okay to me - the sauce is the same as the Siam Prawn, but everyone at the table thought this kind of sauce would go better with salmon than prawns. The chow fun was pretty good but I personally like wider rice noodles than the kind they used. I'm so picky huh?

Oh yeah, the soup was...interesting. Sour and oily? I kinda liked it, I think. But I wouldn't want to have too much of it haha.

Make sure you have gum handy...the taste is really strong in your mouth long after you leave...

P.S. It really smelled in Milpitas when I went today...like garbage or something...and it was so windy!

P.P.S. They had a pretty extensive soju and sake cocktail list...seemed like there were some good drinks on there - maybe I'll try them out sometime!

It has been a while since I've eaten here, but I vowed to review all of my favorite places and give them the props they deserve.
When I first rolled up to this place, I was a bit skeptical. You don't really expect too much from a restaurant in a strip mall. But when you get that first taste, it's like someone dropped an elbow on your tongue from the top rope. I mean that in a good way.
The flavors here are pretty intense. The fish paste may be a bit much for gringos, but a Filipino like me is of the mind set "the fishier, stinkier and saltier, the better".
I am not a huge fan of the roti, but others I have dined here with, swear by it. Cures arthritis and all that.
I like the string beans with belan chan (way off with the spelling, I know) and the coconut steam rice is killer. Another big fave is the pineapple fried rice and rendang beef.
For dessert, get the bubor chacha which is sweet yam and taro in a sweet coconut milk. This is so good I would literally bathe in it. Or name my first born after it.
Anyhow, if you are anywhere near the South Bay and in the mood to try something different and want to get your socks blown off, go here. My highest recommendation.

This place would of received 4 stars, but the wait during lunch is really long. If they tell you 15 minutes, expect about 30 instead. The red curry chicken is great and so is the melaka egg plant. For appetizers, try the roti prata. The prices are pretty reasonable and the service is good. You might want to come in before or after the lunch rush (11:00am or 1:30pm Mon.-Fri.). This place gets really good business.

A group of 9 of us went to lunch at Banana Leaf.  It's a very popular Malaysian/Singaporean/Fusion restaurant so you should get there before 11:30am or you'll have to wait.  Best to make reservations if possible.

We were seated on a nice long table for 9, though it's a bit cramped seating.  The menu is pretty big, I didn't look at everything but I remember it was in a book.

FREE soup w/ lunch specials.

We got:
6 orders of roti prata $2.95 ea.  I love roti prata and found it good.  Served nice & hot, good amount of curry sauce given in a separate bowl.

I think we got 9 orders (not sure) of chicken satay $7.25-chicken pieces on a stick.  Chicken was juicy & served temperature hot.  Sauce given on the side.

some co-workers got pahd (sic) thai $7.95-one liked it, another didn't.

chicken curry lunch special $7.95, you can get red curry or green curry.  Maybe the green is more spicy but I'm not sure.  2 got red, 1 got green.  They seemed to like it.  Huge portion - filled to the brim.  Rice in separate container.

1 red curry prawn - not sure price.  Co-worker seemed to like it.

1 Indian noodle dish (forgot the name) - Co-worker liked it.

Myself & another co-worker got Huat dan ho - a noodle dish w/ flat rice noodles, prawns, squids, chicken, egg, veggie & sauce.  $8.95-I thought it had too much sauce, co-worker thought it was ok.

Malay ice tea $2.95-like a Thai ice tea but not as sweet and brown color, almost coffee like.  Taste fine.

2 banana granita dessert $7-ask for the dessert menu!  Cut up banana slices caramelized w/ 2 scoops of maybe mango ice-cream & whipped cream.  Nice.

1 deep fried banana dessert $7 - comes w/ ice cream & whipped cream.  I didn't try it.

Restaurant can be Very Loud when crowded.  Credit card taken.  I didn't check out the bathroom so don't know.  Outdoors seating available.

This used to be one of my favorite places to go to. It's also one of the places I would suggest my dates take me when we first started dating. I haven't been there for at least a year since I've been dating my bf for a little over a year.

Anyway, I'm always a fan of their roti prata. I wish I knew how to make their sauce. I used to always order their pineapple fried rice, that is, until I heard a horrific rumor... word has it that they reuse their pineapples. Ever since I heard that, I've never ordered that again. If it is just a rumor, please tell me so I can order that plate again.

I can never remember the difference between the "M-something" and "S-something" dishes. I know I like one of them, I just don't remember which one.

For dessert, I would always order fried ice cream with fried banana. Mmm... around 6 years ago, I used to think they had THE best fried ice cream, either my test buds developed and I've tried better over time or their quality has decreased.

Pretty much every one of their dishes are pretty good, and if you come on a weekend for dinner, be prepared to wait in line. Since this restaurant is owned by a Christian owner, they are closed on Sundays.

Even with reservations the wait was unbelievable.  We weren't seated because our whole group was not present (4/6).  They even mixed up groups and gave our table away and we were placed back at the bottom of the list, errr!  I always have problems with larger groups at this place, probably won't come back anymore with 4+ people.

I quite don't understand their style of cuisine, is it Malaysian or Fusion-Asian? If it was a fusion style there would be a mix of favors in all the dishes but it was just a collection of good dishes from different countries; Indian, Thai, etc. Pad Thai was gross, the noodles were over cooked and soggy.

Everyone seemed fulfilled with the dishes however, due to the extremely bad service from the reservation problems and our waiter (she basically forgot about us!) I had to reduced the rating from 4 to 3 stars.  The seating inside seem more fit for smaller groups due to the noise but it was quite cold to be outside.

Banna Leaf is THE place to go for Malaysian food, and you know you are in for some good food when you see people of both Asian and Indian decent lined up outside to get in. I've probally had everything on the menu at this point and if I could, I would go to Banna Leaf again tonight.

Definitely had some great green curry! I like spicy food and it was just right to order on request! The pineapple fried rice was pretty good but I haven't tried enough stuff on the menu to really give my stamp of approval.

Excellent malay/singapore food in the bay area.
The place that set the standard.
Roti prata, chicken rice and char kuay teow hits the spot everytime.

NOTE: it gets very crowded on weekday lunches.

First off, this place has weird hours.  Opened at 5pm on a Tuesday.

I had the roti prata as an appetizer and it was pretty damn good, but not filling (only $3).  It's basically a thin tortilla type thing (not nan) and you dip it in curry.

But for the entree I got the mango chicken that was a disappointment.  I shoulda been called the mango bellpeppers, cuz thats pretty much all I got.  I also tried the coconut rice with that.  I dont like either (Asian, eat rice all day) so rice+coconut = gross.  Though some people will probably like it a lot.

Just because it is often crowded, doesn't mean its great (ala PF Changs)

I don't understand how people can wait to get into this place.  From everyone I've known, they always complain about the wait.  But what are they waiting for?  Mediocre food overpriced food?

What's with the asian fusion title?  It basically tasted like they either put peanut sauce or coconut milk in their dishes.  If they really want to take the fusion route you have to take bigger risks.  Find cuisine parallels, don't just include an extra ingredient.

A bit cramped for my tastes.  Service is fairly quick and to the point.

Pretty overrated and forgettable.  Not too bad for lunch, but I would save my green.

After reading rave reviews of this place on yelp, I placed a lunch order for the veggie Indian Nasi Goreng and some Roti Prata. Being Indian and having been to Malaysia, I expected something totally different for both items. The roti is really like a thick, slightly sweet crepe with an interesting savory sauce. It's okay, but nothing close to what other review make it out to be. The indian fried rice was subpar, somewhat bland and lacking anything but colored rice.

There were a long line when we got there (Saturday night), we didn't mind sitting at the bar so we were seated in about 10-15 mins. Had the murtabak, hainan chicken rice, and prawn mee soup.  Also loved the sambal.  Excellent food!!  I wish I came with more people so that I could try more items on the menu. It also seemed like everybody else ordered the roti prata instead of the murtabak.

I finally made it to the Banana Leaf and it was great !  In the past I was always deterred by the long line outside on the weekends.  We ordered what the bartender recommended from the menu and it was all good.  Looking around at the other tables, all the dishes looked appetizing and nicely displayed.  I can't wait to go back.  It is everything exceptional that I've read about on Yelp.  Thanks everyone.

Since I was around the area last night, I decided to stop by. However, I really remember Banana Leaf being a lot better. It could have been the dishes I ordered though. I'm a big fan of Hainan Chicken and it was not up to par from what I've had. String beans with lemon grass was so-so as well.

I do have to say they were pretty busy for a Tuesday night. That's gotta mean something right?
