If you only get one thing - get their Roti - I think it's #101. It's delicious..mmm!!
Food is good, but a bit on the greasy side. Service is good - my food comes out pretty quick which is always a plus, especially when I'm hungry.
Just note that you'll come out smelling like Asian food when you leave this place.
It's been a while since I came here....maybe 8 months.
Good food and I love that bread/naan stuff, but wayyy overpriced. Servers dont look happy to be there and you need to ask them a few times to refill your water glass.
Oh, and I hate how they try to rush you out.
I like the food but if I have to ask someone more than 3 times for more water or to come take my order... it's annoying.
Suggestion: either hire more people or hire people who speak english, and make everyone smile no matter how lousy they think their job is.
Overall, this place is a turn off.. no wonder why it's been so long since I've been back.
Order the Roti for sure. There is no doubt that you should order this appetizer. The curry it comes with is so delicious.
Don't for that that this place is family style and you get a lot of food so don't over-order. Try to get a variation of dishes too--one from the noodle section, one from another section, etc. Lots of things are spicy so beware! I wanted to try a dessert but we were too full. The Malaysian Iced Tea wasn't too different from other iced teas I've had.
Order the Roti and watch the chefs make it! It's sort of like spinning a pizza. Service was actually pretty good even though other people said it's whack. It is true though, this place was sort of hard to find, haha.
I came on a Friday night and I got seated quickly so ups to that.
Great experience just coming though. Highly recommended!
Horrible service sums this place up. We waited for about an hour and were seated in a dirty table with food scraps still crusted on.
We had trouble getting someone to take our order and did not get napkins or water when asked, twice.
The kicker would be when we decided to leave no tip for the horrible service and an employee and the manager barred us from leaving. He threatened us with violence and to call the police if we did not leave a mandatory 15% tip. We explained to the manager about the unsatisfactory service only to be told "What do you expect? You're not an [expletive] queen". We paid them a $10 and promptly left.
Horrible experience, I recommended never stepping foot into this place.
I finally made the time to go to this restaurant! it literally took me forever and I'm really not that impressed. we ordered the Volcano Spareribs, Singaporean noodles and sizzling tofu/veggie combo plus roti. It might have been all the diff spices mix together that left my tummy with a not so pleasant feeling...thank goodness I didn't need to go to the bathroom to pull a #2! hahahhaha but really though for the price..its not that great. yes granted they have lots of options to choose from but my Indonesian restaurant satisfy my tummy wayyy better than this place. I say if u are curious then try it once but I'm pretty sure u wont be going back anytime soon. Its not that memorable...
3 1/2 stars several asian foods to choose from menu is more then 5 pages and everything looks good
cantonese, mandarin, thai, mongolian, you get the picture everything asian haha
everything I've tried is good, kinda fast foodish but good if you want several choice all in one place hit up this spot bring more then one friend your going to want to try a lil of everything.
since it is close to the house anytime we dont know what to eat you can always come here to decide
food *** 1/2
price $$
service *** depends if it is busy
ambiance *** standard oriental rug and gold designed walls
LOVE the made to order Roti here, both the appetizer version Roti Canal served with curry sauce, and the dessert version Roti Kaya (coconut jam) - without the whipped cream. A bargain at under $5 each.
Really good mango juice too.
Everything else I've tried so far is just average or unremarkable compared to other bay area places. Although it's true that it was much better in the past. On a prior visit we were served some lukewarm food in under 5 minutes, probably the most popular dishes were made in advance and kept in a warming tray. That was disappointing.
Beef Rendang is one of the better dishes, but I like the Malaysian food from Lime Tree better (limited menu). For good Thai food, I would go to Thai House Express instead.
I've only been here for dinner, they do have a value priced lunch menu ($6-7) that might be a good deal. I'll update this review when I get to try it.
Service is usually friendly.
Located in the Westlake Shopping Center.
Hours: daily 11:30am - 10pm
Ive been here twice and would rather go elsewhere. Not a fan of curry or bean paste.
I'd give it two stars but I am not a fan of this type of cuisine so I can't blame this establishment. I just wont return.
+ Yummy Roti
+ Yummy Fried Banana w/ Ice Cream
+ Yummy Papaya Salad
+ Yummy Coconut Shrimp
+ Yummy Curry
+ Best Dinner Mint I've ever tasted!
I have nothing negative to say about this place! Everything on the menu yummy! I recommend the Roti w/ curry sauce, and for desert Fried Banana w/ Ice Cream. Try it out, I guarantee you wont be disappointed! :D
OOooO FIRST TIME HERE AND I MUST SAY.....
Customer SERVICE is OK...its like a (+2) the guy keep rushing us to order when me and my homegirl dont know anything.... UGHHH DONT RUSH ME!!! and no SMILE what so ever.....the waiters are not very alert!..if i was working here man...my customer service would be all smiles and cheers lol but i wont wear their outfit ..yikes...its cute but not on me..
BUT (+4) for the food we order, mango chicken and this veggie dish. VERY GOOD!
mango chicken - with mango shell holding the chicken and mango slices with a light sweet and sour sauce..i likeeyyy =) cause i picked that one...+4
the veggie - it looked like a hot pepper with little white seed pearls in it.!!! never had it before but it had a slimy texture to it, and i like it...slimy doesnt sound to pleasant but it was very chewy...+4
PROs- they packed our food! yay +5
the appitezer #106 wasnt so great lol reminded me of eating vietnamese egg rolls that was burnt and stinky tofu and some super oily chip looking thing...+1 for me lol..
This place is located kind of in the back end of westlake. The place is nicely decorated with the whole asain theme.
The menu is huge so it'll take a while to go through it. We ordered the lettuce wraps, roti, seafood fried rice, spicy chicken wings and tom yom soup and everything was really good!!! We stuck to the foods we knew, but the table next to us ordered very interesting things and it looked good as well. I will be back to try the more interesting dishes. It definatly a good plae to go with friends or family, portions are huge. GREAT place for KIDS too.
I enjoyed it and will return.
This place is very popular for being is such an out-of-the-way location.
I guess its because the food is a bit different (Maylaysian) and the prices quite reasonable, the service is quick, and the atmosphere is a cut or two above the typical cheap Daly City Asian restaurant, of which there seem to be thousands. So, for Daly City, this deserves 3 stars.
Get the Roti. Always a great starter dish. Chicken wings and curry dishes are quite good. Wasn't the biggest fan of their pineapple rice. Overall, I would have to say their food was fairly good. Most of it wasn't exceptional but you won't really regret what you ordered either.
Service was a bit rushed. Waiters constantly came to us asking if we were ready to order every 2 minutes.
In general, a nice place to check out if you're in the food for Southeast Asian cuisine.
You will need a map to find this gem. People..it is hidden behind the new parking structure, behind Hollywood Video.
This is my third time here, and every time I come I enjoy it Soo much. The food is a fusion of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Thai cuisines! Very delicious. The menu has a wide variety of dishes to choose from including noodles, poultry, pork, beef, seafood, vegetarian. Pretty much anyone can be satisified here, even the pickiest eater. Nice for family, friend, or couple dining (not romantic)!
I usually start off with the Roti with curry dipping sauce (the curry is yellow, so its very mild) and the minced shrimp puffs wrapped in bacon (deep fried).
Entrees:
The pineapple fried rice is extremely delicious with beef. Comes in a pineapple on a boat! (see pix)
Beef rendang is good beef is tender and juicy but I wish it was a bit more spicy.
Mango shrimp is delicous. Comes in a sweet tangy sauce with sliced up mango, very refreshing on a hot day with rice. Presentation is in a mango. (see pix)
Volcano Spareribs sweet and spicy, lots of meat for a spare rib! Comes in a foil, literally on fire. Be aware dont touch the fire!! The waiter staff will keep moving the foil at your table until the fire calms down! pretty cool.
Henaese (sp?) Chicken is very tender and moist. The spices are delicious on the chicken, but one can make this at home, so yeaah.
Dessert:
roti with strawberries and bananas and mago or vanilla ice cream. there is an extra charge for both fruits. good, but not very decadent for a dessert.
fried bananas and ice cream is delicious, period, exclamation mark!
Drinks:
Thai Iced Tea, Watermelon drink, coconut juice, and Malaysian Iced Tea..very delicous drinks.
Service:
The waitstaff is very attentive. What I appreciate the most is that they wont give you an attitude when you ask questions. They will even stand there and recommend dishes depending on your tastes and diet. I had a million and one questions, and they were all answered.
Time:
Dont you dare come here without reservations on the weekends. You will die in line from hunger!!
Decor:
The restaurant has lots of dragons and SE Asian influence art. It also seems that the restaurant has 3 levels, try to sit on the second level! In the middle of the restaurant you can witness roti in the making.
Pricing:
Dont come here on a "broke kid budget"! The dishes are pricey compared to other asian restaurants. Expect to pay between $8 and $20 a dish. Crab is market price.
Mints:
DONT EAT THEM!!! YOU WILL DIE!!! lol.
Came here with my family in celebration of my mom's birthday and ordered tons of food (9 dishes for 4 people), lol. There were two vegetarian dishes for my dad and the rest for were for my mom, sister and I. And no...we didn't actually finish all that food =P
Highlights:
~ Roti Canal: it's a must order every time we go and we always save the curry sauce for our rice...makes everything taste better ;D
~ Hot & Spicy Sauce Clams: the clams were ginormous and oh so juicy. None of the overcooked, shrunk stuff you get at most places. Deliciousness!
~ Kang Kung Belecan (Ong Choi): Ong Choi with Shrimp Paste...what's there not to like?
Also yummy:
~ Baby Oyster Omelet: the eggs were super fluffy and it had tons of garlic in it...a lot tastier than most of the other stuff out there
~ Beef Satay: mmm...love the sauce that goes with it!
Skip:
~ Green Curry Mixed Seafood w/Vegetables: the curry was a little too thin for my liking and definitely not as good as the stuff that you can get at a good Thai restaurant
Although their food is pretty good, this is not somewhere I'd go on a regular basis. Their food is not the greatest since it's a fusion of different cuisines. Their menu is not descriptive enough and a lot of their sauces are kind of similar (i.e Thai, Hot & Spicy, Sambal). Also, as mentioned by a lot of other people, their service is mediocre at best. They pretty much take your order, bring you your food and that's it.
The Roti is the one thing that actually keeps me going back for more...
This place really is just alright, but I do credit that they are always consistent with things. Be warned though it's always a mad house there, so if you are eating with more than two people, you may want to make reservations.
Some of the tastier items on the menu are:
Beef Satay
Roti Canal (hang on to the curry bowl for your rice)
Beef Rendang
Kang Kung Belecan
String Beans Malaysian Style
Thai Style Whole Fish
A lot of the other items on the menu are just fancy sounding versions of fast food take out items. Aromatic Chicken=Sweet and Sour Chicken.
I wouldn't come here for Thai food though...
The Roti appetizer was really good although the portion was tiny (or should I say, thinner than paper). The thai fried rice with tofu was more sweet than spicy even though we asked her to make all of or dishes spicy . The eggplant dish was pretty bland and disappointing. All in all, Banana Island was pretty mediocre. I'm just surprised to see how many yelpers have reviewed this place!
The service here is rather mediocre, nothing rememberable to say the least. The place is clean, and the prices are fair.
We tried three different dishes: some okra, malaysian noodles, and some belacanan fish. It all was just ok, but nothing I would write home about. If I was in the area and wanted some Ma/Si/In food, I wouldn't mind coming here, but it's not really my first choice.
Considering this place is essentially hidden behind the Westlake garage and has no shot at foot traffic, the place was jamming on a Friday night.
The roti is a family favorite - I like how they make it in the center of the restaurant where the Applebee's bar was located. Chicken wing appetizer was sweet and sticky (no spice). The red curry was more yellow than red, but a very tasty non-hot curry. Eggplant dish as good as well. I like the blend of asian cuisines. C
I've visited this joint numerous times, i have no clue why I never left a review.
So let the yelping being...
This place brings me back so many memories, its freaking crazy. The food here is great, except for the very very bland curries, I know because I've mistakenly ordered it several absent-minded times. (harsh, but minus 1 star for yucky curry) Anything else is fantastic, especially the ROTI (yum, I'll die for you ROTI).. I always try the rice/noodle dishes which satisfies me oh so well. My friend who is also an avid Banana Island goer always orders the..
Basil Clams, hold the spicy, with a side of coconut rice.
deeeeelicous!
The staff there is always warm, friendly, and very accommodating. Refills on time, food always served on time and with a smile! It could be a bit dead during lunch time, but i can assure you the food is just as good when it is 12pm as 730pm! The desserts aren't half bad either! Go there on a very empty stomach and you won't be disappointed!
PS.. this joint is behind the ridiculous new 5 story parking lot
PPS.. don't forget to try toe ROTI!
I'm been here a number of times, and it doesn't disappoint. The restaurant is very clean by Asian-restaurant standards. I've brought a few of my friends here on many occasions, and they thought the food was good. If you're looking for your Southeast Asian fix, then this is a good place to check out. Of course, I've had better, but it's probably the best restaurant in the Westlake center.
I recommend the following:
Roti (you really can't pass on this)
Volcano Spare Ribs
Sizzling Beef
Sizzling Chicken
Mango Chicken
Rendang Beef
Indian Mee Goreng
Capitan Noodles
ok i'm not a foodie, or restauranteur or whatever, but i love the food here. good service, .good prices and healthy portions.
...ummmmm.....?????????
for those who gave this place more than 1 star:
"are we eating at the same place?!"
Meh, I've seen better restaurants then this. The only thing that I really like about this place was the appetizer Roti. The curry sauce it comes with is good. For me personally I can not handle any spicy foods, and seeing that more than half the menu had spicy foods in it, nothing seemed appealing. Other than that, the interior decor and decorations were nice. Thats all I have to say. Plain and simple
I've been here once and would not go back at all. Rotti is ok, but the curry could be a little thicker.
I had the house special squid and thai fried chicken. chicken tasted dry and seemed like it was just reheated. squid was ok, but the "special sauce" could still be improved.
won't go back
FINALLY.. A place I can get down at... they dont play around with their food here. Everything is delicious!
Roti Canal-for real? Crepe and curry? AWESOME, if the curry had some chicken I'd be in heaven
Beef Rendang- Flavors are perfecto! The beef is tender and there is just a little spice.. a little more spice would be better, but still delicious
Sizzling Tofu- CRAAAACKIN!! I couldnt believe how flavorful the tofu was
Curry Crab- YESSSS. Always satisfies my curry crab craving. They never fail me.
Pineapple Fried Rice- Yumo.. i dont really like pineapple but this is delicious.
the food was mediocre.
service was awful.
won't be going back. ever.
My favorite asian resto!
Order the Salted fish fried rice -- the best in the bay!
Shrimp puffS --- Always on my list
Pineapple fried rice
Volcano spare ribs
Roti
Calamari
Through the back alley, between the Westlake parking structure and around the corner...you have reached Banana Island...
Can we get some customer service here? We had a waitress who I guess likes to play a memorizing game or something. All she needs to do is write it down on a piece of paper and pen. It got really annoying when she would repeat each of our orders and double checking to see if it was correct. I would be impressed if she had the orders correct, but correcting her after each dish was annoying.
The food was bland and dry. The water had no ice and the tea pot was empty :( The only good part of this place is parking and the free mint.
Banana Island is like Asian comfort food to me. About a few times a month, I frequent this adorably (okay, a little cheesy) decorated restaurant. It's close to shopping and has a ton of parking.
I love the Malaysian ice tea - not too sweet and always a perfect complement to many of the dishes. The Indian roti -- you have to get because it's thin and crispy - and it comes with a delicious curry dipping sauce. I could live off these two things, I swear.
I'm a big fan of their tofu - it comes on a sizzling platter and it's sure to get everyone's attention. Yah that's right. It's hawt. It's accompanied by peas, beef and eggs. It's not just any tofu - it's like an eggy tofu. It's delicious and healthy. This dish will convert any tofu hater into a tofu-tolerator (I just made that word up).
Service is always good. I always ask for Simon - he is the best server and makes excellent recommendations.
The portions are huge, so for the stingy Yelpers who have complained about the prices, I think you need to go to McDonald's. I heard they have a dollar menu.
I dunno, this place is just OK for me.
The only reason I come here is for the roti canal, which is a must if you come here. They have a guy in the middle of the restaurant flipping these "Indian Pancakes" which is pretty cool. Everything else on the menu consists of Asian-fused noodles, fried-rice and all the kind of meats you want. Oh, one time I ordered their soy milk, yeah, don't. It tasted like soap. They were nice enough to change the drink for me, but yuck that was disgusting. Overall, nice place for a meal, price is decent, food is decent, service is decent. Roti canal forsure!
Banana Island is consistently good for the following reasons: 1) quick and efficient service (albeit a lil on the not so personable side), 2) excellent, right on point flavors, 3) extensive menu, and 4) not the typical noisy Asian restaurant.
Here's what a table of 5 ordered:
* Roti with curry sauce - the roti is perfectly constructed and while it's hard to piece apart and is greasier in some parts, the dipping sauce more than makes up for it!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the sauce! Later one of my dining companions discovered it made a good dipping sauce for the fried calamari too.
* Tofu with peanut sauce - very interesting that it's stuffed with shredded green papaya and bean sprouts.. The peanut sauce was chunkier than I usually prefer, but the tofu is fried to perfection and kept its shape well.
* Fried calamari - weird that it's listed in the main dish section. Pretty good sized portion. Cooked very well, crispy and accompanied by a few red onions, and green and red peppers.
* Fried rice - Always done well, but overwhelming with some of the dishes, that I almost preferred we ordered white rice too.
* Pad Thai - Nothing to sing about, but nothing wrong with it either. Much prefer the pad see ew not only because I favor the thicker noodle, but it's more flavorful and interesting than the pad thai.
* Sizzle beef - EXCELLENTE! Tender, well seasoned beef with nice crisp red and green peppers and onions. I could have just ordered this and the roti and called it a meal! White rice would have made this much more enjoyable, but was an afterthought.
* Kangkong in shrimp paste - Seriously this veggie is not all that, but put anything in shrimp paste it's instant flavor fest...but that's not necessarily a good thing. I had a small serving of this and that was plenty. Much prefer the okra in shrimp paste.
Decor isn't much to speak of, but fairly well-lit and clean. At this type of place, the food out shines it all.
I think this place is pretty good, although they are a tad expensive for asian food. Thats why they only get 3 stars.
I love their roti appetizer. It's this flat pancake/crepe thing with curry dipping sauce...MMmm my friends and i always order it when we come here..i think it's about $4.25 (kinda pricey)
I also get their pineapple fried rice that's really yummy and their pad thai is a tad spicy. (i believe it's from $10-$12 per a dish)
The best thing they have here is their fried banana dessert. Omg it's delicious! I always have to order it when i come here! =O)
My family and I used to come here practically every week when it first opened up years ago. I love their roti with the curry sauce and the little wedge of potato that they put in there. Plus, you can use the leftover sauce to add flavoring to the rice! We also always order the satay beef/chicken skewers with the peanut sauce, and again, the sauce can be used to go over the rice. Maybe I'm weird but I mix both the roti sauce with the peanut sauce into my rice. But I digress, the food here has always been pretty consistent, and by that I mean you walk away with a "not bad, but there's better out there" feeling, if you know what I mean. A few of the waitresses know my family and family friends quite well, so service has always been good. Two thumbs up for their Malaysian iced tea! It has the perfect tea/milk ratio.
What's up with the parking structure blocking the restaurant though?! I imagine that can't be too good for attracting new customers who didn't know that it's always been there. It's a nice place to bring a date as long as you've been seeing them for a while. Otherwise, it's a tad too loud to get to know someone, especially if you go on a Friday or weekend night. All in all, decent food at a decent price, and the roti is a must for every table!
As far as yummy food goes, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Daly City!
Although there is a huge parking structure blocking the front of the restaurant, it means you're always guaranteed a spot!
This place is great for two people or even large parties. My favorite dishes include the roti canai, shrimp puffs, seafood tomyum rice noodle soup, and their dessert which melts in your mouth, roti kaya with ice cream. For the most part, their noodle dishes are always tasty. They also bring out your food pretty quickly also.
I love their banana leaf shaped chairs and the man chef in the middle of the restaurant who is always tossing and cooking up the roti orders like pizzas!
My only complaint about this place is their service. I feel like depending on who you are with, their service varies. If i come here with big parties or my mother, they seem to be so attentive and nice. If i come here with friends of the younger crowd they just take your order, bring your food out, and give ya the check.
We had a really big group for all Indonesians and this restaurant accommodated us really well. Some unfortunate families ended up in the same area as we did and need to listen to us jabbering around the whole night.
I like the beef rendang, coconut fried rice, kangkung belacan, okra with belacan, and the belacan fried noodle (lots of belacan, I know). They taste good and authentic. I ordered the Malaysian iced tea as well and I like it. It's sweet but not too sweet as Thai iced tea. Some of my friends ordered this peanut icy drink that look like a corn cob of ice in a bowl. It's pretty hard to eat and despite all the effort eating it, doesn't taste that great.
We also got the waitress that didn't need pen and paper to take our order that night. She got all the orders right though. I'm impressed.
Love this place! Just hard to find... The beef rendang, roti, pad Thai, sizzling tofu platter, singapore tofu, golden sesame chicken, malaysian pork chop, string beans, thai style whole fish, and for dessert, bobo cha cha and ice kacang -- it's all good! fast friendly service too!
i've always heard people talking about going here for birthdays and what not, but never been here.
i went with my lil sis on labor day, quite packed, about a 15 min wait (woulda been a lil less if some asian hk couple didn't cut us -____-)
anywayssss, sat down, small lil table right next to the cooking ppl swirling that thingy.
we ordered the roti canal cuz yelp users say its good. and i ordered some noodle thingy and she did too
food came pretty fastt. the roti canal.....how to sayyyy it...its gooood, but truthfully my grandma can make that curry at home and with hella potatoes and meat, so i wasn't too impressed, the weird thin thing that came with it was interesting....might as well have dipped bread in it.. soaks more flavor...but thats just me
my dish camee....and it basically was like chow mein...with a slightlyy different flavor. the "fusion" i guesss. it didnt taste baddd, it just wasn't wat i expected with all the fuss
my friend had a thinner rice noodle thing, also tasted like u could get at any asian place, but it was good too.
maybe next time i'll try the rice plates or something, but for now! this place is only okayyy, really nice service though.
Pretty dope place! Actually one of the first places where I have seen a Pan-SOUTHEAST Asian (mainly dishes from island nations like Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, etc.) cuisine menu. Being Pilipino, I was very impress on how their cuisine is very much similar to dishes that I grew up with.
Their roti is a must as an appetizer. Try it with the curry, it's yummy.
Dishes to try: Pineapple fried rice, Okra with shrimp paste, ginger chicken, sizzling tofu plate, Singapore Fried Rice, and so many more...the menu has a lot to choose from =].
enjoy.
Delicious southeast Asian food at a decent price.
They have delicious roti that they serve with curry sauce and a potato, as well as pad thai, fresh vegetable dishes, and flavorful sauces to accompany their meat dishes. Presentation is also exciting here, as lots of dishes are sizzling or even on fire!
My friends and I were intrigued when our beef came out with flames coming out of them. We weren't sure if we were supposed to blow it out or leave it there or if the waitress noticed the fire, so we all just nervously stared at it while the waitress slowly placed the dishes on the table. I guess you're supposed to allow it to burn around the aluminum foil it came in, because it tasted great after it cooled down.
I'd say this restaurant is one of the best in Westlake.
